The stunning, total defeat of ACORN

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

The ACORN vote in the House is stunning news. Just 48 hours after Republican Leader John Boehner introduced the "Defund ACORN Act," the bill -- which most Republicans thought Democrats would do anything to block -- passed by a resounding 345-75 vote. It would never have made it to a vote had not the Democratic leadership decided to allow it, and the winning total included 172 Democrats. Yes, 172 House Democrats voted to totally cut off funding for an organization that has worked for years on behalf of Democrats nationwide.

Couple that with the 83-7 Senate vote to cut off housing funds to ACORN -- a number that included 50 Democrats -- and the votes signal the complete collapse of Democratic support for ACORN. The job is not anywhere near finished -- the Senate still has to consider a total-cutoff bill, introduced just today by Sen. Mike Johanns, and a conference committee has to come up with a final bill that President Obama signs. At any step of the way, Democrats might decide to resume defending ACORN or give it federal support by other means. But as of today there are on-the-record votes of large majorities of House and Senate Democrats in favor of cutting off funds for ACORN.

Although Republicans had long fought against ACORN, it is not an exaggeration to say that none of this would have happened now without the BigGovernment undercover videos. Democrats who in the past had reflexively supported ACORN ran for cover after seeing ACORN employees encouraging tax evasion and prostitution. The BigGovernment videos mark an important moment in the development of alternative media sources, and official Washington responded before most of the establishment press did. This is truly an extraordinary series of events.

The problem is many subgroups affiliated with ACORN, or under the ACORN umbrella have to be ferreted out so they are not funded. The total amount reported earlier this year for ACORN and its related organizations equaled about $8.2Billion. Glenn Beck had discussed this network.
That amount of funding could buy alot of healthcare for citizens.

This is just unbelievable. Christmas in September.
If some one will set up a fund where I can send money to Hannah Giles and James O'Keefe, I will gladly contribute.
They can use the money for whatever use they want too. They did this on their own dime and I think they need to not only be repaid but make a handsome profit too.
They did more pure reporting in a couple of months than the Old Media have done in the last few decades even with all their highly paid "Rock Star" journalist.

I'm sure the courageous Republicans in Congress will be cutting of funding for Blackwater, KBR, Citibank, lawbreaking telecoms and many other corrupt corporations who own them, rather than a corporation which has received $53 million dollars over 15 years.

(and the 8/2 billion number is a lie, that's how much they could theoretically receive under the stimulus, and ACORN was never in line to receive even a tiny fraction of that money.)

Byron, you're premature. No one has been convicted yet, no one has gone to jail. The defunding bill you speak of is not law yet. As Carolyn point out there are MANY other related organizations which are not even on our radar yet. A full forensic accounting will be needed to untangle this, including action by states and the feds. We're barely even started Byron.

Tu quoque, Peter. Whatever you want to claim about Citibank et al (and you arent being specific), ACORN is bad news and not worth defending.

The list of ACORN corruption and malfeasance is very long. They have a symbiotic relationship with the Democratic Party, especially now that Obama is in office. The founder of ACORN founded SEIU. Obama uses SEIU as ground troops for Organizing for America, his personal propaganda/street advocacy arm, and he did work for ACORN as their lawyer and trainer and reach out to them as he ran for president. SEIU has violently intimidated and tried to take over other unions. All the big unions get special favors from this admin, including advocating for Card Check.

And yes, ACORN's various low-income-housing-advocacy front organizations were due to receive billions. Anyone who has ever investigated them (and they have been investigated many times because they have always been corrupt) notes that no one can track the money they get.

Defund. Check. Now criminally prosecute for a host of violations of federal law including child slavery for the sex trades. Forensic acounting might uncover the tentacles to the myriad organizatons connected to ACORN. RICO is very appropriate.

As I describe at Canticle4Leibowitz.com, the bill defunding ACORN is nuclear. It not only permanently defunds ACORN and all of its affiliates but defines "affiliates" to include any organization with which ACORN shares Directors, funding or independent contractors.

Chop down the tree and watch the vermin scatter. A thousand leftist shadow organizations are going to have to run like hell in order to keep their own access to the federal nipple!

I wouldn't be surprised if Obama VETOED the defunding bill! (His first veto, a high-profile power dsiplay) Sounds crazy, I know. But think what a hero he'd be on the far Left ... particularly after they thoroughly whitewash the whole affair with a phony audit and minor purges plus, of course, a massive roll-out of the emerging mainstream media meme that it's just a wonderful organization of thousands of grass-roots heros doing humanitarian work with the oppressed poor -- heros who have been wrongfully tarred -- victimized! -- by a few bad apples (now gone) and pervasive angry racism. ACORN may actually come out of this stronger ... scrubbed clean and widely praised by the media and endorsed strongly by the president himself, bulletproofed against future "racist" charges of election fixing ... just in time to do their dasdardly deeds for the critical 2010 elections.

If Mr. York will provide me with the name of his favorite, currently-available bourbon, I will present him with a bottle should ACORN actually ever be stripped of federal funds. The pols are playing chicken with voters' attention spans here. The defunding votes were on different bills in the House and Senate. It is almost inevitable that they will be stripped in conference committee. Thus, both chambers can claim an action not ever realized.

Bills go through both houses like so much sausage. After "passing" one stage at a time, something down the road 'might' make it to Obama's desk for signature. He doesn't sign it. Maybe, he'll do a pocket veto? Don't bet this horse. The race is really fixed. (The democrats though, reading polls, are getting spooked. This is their first attempt at PR.) Won't be their last.

The Democrats vote for ending AC0RN funding publicly now, but then will quietly kill the effort in conference, or water it down to the point of being meaningless.

bobby b

Sep 17, 2009

Let's be realistic. In nine months, if we look closely, I'm sure we'll see various organizations being run by the same middle-management types as are running the local Acorn offices now, we'll see that Obama has quietly slipped them billions in funding (for different expressed causes, of course), and the entire group of big media corporations will be both helping with the funding and expressing amazement that anyone could be so dishonest as to even imply that the new organizations share any ties with acorn.

And it'll take three more years to prove it for each and every local org, which is the burden that will be placed on such an effort by the left and repeated by the media.

It's going to take watchdogging of an incredible degree - someone is going to have to identify, now, each mid-manager at acorn, and then keep tabs on them for the next year or two, to avoid this.

Politicians play to the public perception.

Who wants the public perception to be that I support child prostitution?

This is knee jerk politics. Save face. Don't be associated with this. Bad for next election. Don't bother getting all the facts first, just save political face.

But in doing so they neglect their responsibility to be duly diligent in their decisions.

They should do a thourough investigation and make a thoughtful decision.

Reacting simply to what is circulating in the media is not careful or thoughtful at all.

It's just doing what they perceive is in their best political interest.

I respond:
I'm REALLY sorry your ACORN office got raided yesterday...

I know the MSM is in the tank for any leftist outfit, but it's sooooo revealing that two 'kids' with a video camera and $3,000 traveling money, with a website, brought down ACORN's entire reputation.

The MSM? If I remember right, ABC didn't even carry the story for 5 days.

There is no investigative journalism anymore.

The last real investigative reporter, John Stossel, left for Fox. A no-brainer!

You can never get rid of an acorn trr unless you get all roots supporting. We must expose the socialist democrats who receive campaign contributions from the corrupt Acorn and tell them it's all over friend in 2010.

Acorn must have been Obama's Useful Idiot group. Albent is right, it served its purpose, so it can go up flames for all the White House cares. I am a big fan of Muckety.com...helps to know where undue influence may exist.

the rise of acorn coincides with the rise of the community reinvestment act which is another social justice bill under carter and clinton.this gave us the acorn shake down and the subprime mortgage scam run by freddy and franny.do this for 25yrs untill the market crashs, blame it on bush and bonbo wins the election.

I don't see anyone defending ACORN who has benefited from ACORN's services probably because they don't want their tax returns audited.

As has been said many times, this is only the beginning of the process. Until the president signs off it, nothing has changed. These bills mean nothing until they are signed off as laws and they have to go all the way through the process. It's the right step, but only the first one. Glenn Beck and others are making some things happen that have gotten the attention of the power players in Washington. We have to keep up the pressure or they will go back to business as usual.

Let's just face it. We must be racists, since we are criticizing Obama Acorn.

Ed

Sep 18, 2009

Beware, anyone who criticizes Obama & relationship with Acorn is now considered by Lefties to be a racist, and a violent nut job; freedom of speech in past presidential lives.

I hope that this is just the very beginning of a long term downfall of the left. The new media needs to stay as aggressive as a pit bull and not relent until we can make a serious dent in exposing all the corruption in Washington (both on the Left and the Right) and getting representatives that actually represent us.

I wish Fox News had some healthy Fair and Balanced competition. It would be great to have two like-minded networks doing really serious investigative journalism instead of Fox going it alone. As it is now, the new media has only one TV station.

ACORN is like the terminator that morphs: you can shoot it, you can blow it to pieces, yet it still reconstitutes. It's demise was the forge. We need to lead them into the forge where the heat will not allow their reformation.

Problem is you take out ACORN there are a dozen more ready to take their place. This should be only the beginning. It is time for the citizens of the republic to infiltrate every political organization republican or democrat and expose all fraud, waste, and criminal activity. It is up to the citizen to do the job the mainstream media will not do.

The head of ACORN said they served the black and brown community. Didn't they do taxes or help with foreclosures for whites ?
They receive tax dollars and discriminate ?

While Biggovernment.org produced the films which brought Acorn down, it would not have happened without Glen
Beck's efforts. He gets scant regonition from a media loath to give Fox news praise for anything.

Alternative journalism is the only way to expose corruption and lies since the government-media complex is nothing more than a propaganda machine, and since foreign entities including Saudi Arabia and China own shares of the major U.S. media. Boycott NBC/CBS/ABC/CNN/FOX/MSNBC etc., etc.!
