Van Jones resigns, says he was victim of 'vicious smear campaign'

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

The White House announced the resignation of green jobs adviser Van Jones early Sunday morning. In a departure letter, Jones, whose extensive record of radical politics became public in recent weeks, said he was the victim of a "vicious smear campaign" and that "opponents of reform" had used "lies and distortion" against him.

Observers had been predicting Jones' departure after word spread that Jones signed a 2004 petition supporting the so-called "9/11 Truther" movement; that he was a self-professed communist during much of the 1990s; that he supported the cop-killer Mumia abu-Jamal; that in 2008 he accused "white polluters" of "steering poison into the people of color communities"; that he was affiliated with an anti-American publication called "War Times" from 2002 to 2004; that in 2005 he said, "You've never seen a Columbine done by a black child"; and that earlier this year he called Republicans "a--holes." When controversy erupted, Jones apologized for the "Truther" episode and his remarks about the GOP.

Jones was a favorite of Valerie Jarrett, who is one of President Obama's closest advisers. "We were so delighted to be able to recruit him into the White House," Jarrett said in August. "We were watching him -- really, he's not that old -- for as long as he's been active out in Oakland. And all the creative ideas he has."

In his resignation letter, Jones said he had been "inundated with calls" urging him to "stay and fight," but he did not want to ask his colleagues in the Obama administration to take time away from their work to defend his record. Here is the text of Jones' letter:

I am resigning my post at the Council on Environmental Quality, effective today.

On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me. They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide.

I have been inundated with calls - from across the political spectrum - urging me to “stay and fight.”

But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future.

It has been a great honor to serve my country and my President in this capacity. I thank everyone who has offered support and encouragement. I am proud to have been able to make a contribution to the clean energy future. I will continue to do so, in the months and years ahead.

Hired last March, Jones was involved in spending the roughly $80 million in the stimulus package devoted to so-called "green jobs." Although Jones had long been an advocate for environmentally-friendly jobs, his own task at the White House was somewhat ill-defined. There is no official federal definition of what a "green job" is, nor are there any widely-accepted yardsticks to measure how many "green jobs" might be created and at what cost.

But it was Jones' radical politics that did him in. He left a long trail of statements, many of them on video, covering a variety of hot-button political and racial issues. The controversy over those statements grew slowly at first but snowballed in recent days, and Jones' fate was signaled by the White House on Friday, when spokesman Robert Gibbs declined say that President Obama continued to have confidence in his green jobs adviser.

Coverage of the Jones controversy was a case study of some of the deep divisions within the media. Fox News' Glenn Beck devoted program after program to Jones' past, and a number of conservative blogs were responsible for finding some of Jones' most inflammatory statements. Yet even as the controversy grew -- and even after Jones himself apologized for some of his words -- several of the nation's top media outlets failed to report the story. As late as Friday, as the Jones matter began to boil over, it had not been reported at all in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the evening newscasts of ABC, CBS, and NBC. Although the Post and CBS went on to report the Jones story on Saturday, the Times did not inform its readers about the Jones matter until after Jones resigned.

Absolutely wonderful news..Thank you Byron, Glenn, Michelle, and all of US for spreading the word on this atrocious appointment...Stand tall America !

I didn't notice a big surge of people trying to protect this communist, America-hating bigot, that is an example of the worst in American society, on whichever part of the political spectrum.

I have been inundated with calls - from across the political spectrum - urging me to “stay and fight.” Maoists. Trotskyites. Stalinists. All the way right as far as the Loony Left.

Hold on, Chabis, I was one of the callers and I'm a conservative who ran for Congress as a Republican last year. I was looking forward to explanations---lots and lots of explanations---of the man's video-taped remarks. Now this screwball has dropped down the memory hole along with Rev. Jeremiah and Billy Ayres, leaving only a fainst stench behind. Very disappointing.

Glenn Beck 1 Marxist Cxars 0
Keep up the good work Glenn, there are at least 9 other Marxist Csrs. The really scary thing is that Obama obviously shares their ideology.

You Republicans are full of hate and fear. Mr. Jones is a national ass-et. So what if he came from one of the cookiest, hate filled, bigoted areas of the country - Oakland. So what... and so what if he hates Amerika - last I checked it was a free country. And 9/11 - we asked for it. Yeah, and why should he have to explain anything? - Barack said he was a close friend, they shared many ideas and goals - that's good enough. You are just a bunch of racist, hate filled Hitler loving white guys. And by the way, if Bush hadn't screwed everything up so badly, and then if he hadn't lied to us about how bad things were - yeah, this is Bush's fault. And Cheney's pulling the strings - he has to be.

...this is all Bush's fault, and Cheney told him to do it.

Who's next...
So far, Obama has appointed 34 czars. Just listing them is enough to scare anyone who believes in constitutional and representative government: Afghanistan Czar, AIDS Czar, Border Czar, Car Czar, Climate Czar, Copyright Czar, Cyberspace Czar, Drug Czar, Economic Czar, Education Czar, Energy Czar, Executive Pay Czar, Faith-Based Czar, Great Lakes Czar, Green Jobs Czar, Guantanamo Closure Czar, Health Reform Czar, Infotech Czar, Intelligence Czar, Iran Czar, Middle East Peace Czar, Non-Proliferation Czar, Persian Gulf/SE Asia Czar, Regulatory Czar, Science Czar, Stimulus Accountability Czar, Sudan Czar, TARP Czar, Terrorism Czar, Urban Czar, War Czar, and WMD and Terrorism Czar.

Even Robert Byrd has been quoted as saying the appointment of czars circumvents the process of policy oversight and the right of the Senate to confirm appointees of such influence. These czars likely trump others including a number of cabinet appointees.
The funny thing though - look at all of the czars who dealing with foreign policy. I bet Hillary is all smiles...

First "Lady" is well left of Barack - and yes you can get well left of Barack. It's not infinite, but people (advisors) like Mr. Jones, and again the First "Lady" prove it with their past and their present. Notice how Michelle has been muzzled?

Mr. Van Jones has no idea what a real smear job is. Just ask Judge Robert Bork, former President George Bush, or former Governor Palin, or the dozens of others who were on the receiving end of a left wing slam from the media. Mr. Jones is exactly what he is: a radiological radical from one of the most politically radical regions of the USA. Sail into the sunset my friend.

Smear job on Van Jones? He was killed by his own words; he wasn't slick enough to "hide" his true character because he thought there were enough of people like him who want to see the Country turn into a communist country.

Ha, ha. Now Jones will have to go underground to get what he wants to do.

David Horowitz and the Glenn Beck interview pretty much spells it out for you.

I've followed Horowitz and his parents since the '60s. Check him out now and arm yourself with the "words" needed to defeat communists at every turn.

It's critical to our Nation.

Gosh, and those horrible "right wingers" that Bush appointed, or tried to appoint (I am a conservative before a Repub. - not a big fan of Bush's loss of backbone w/congress). They would be labeled "toxic" now. Those horrible people, standing up for instead of tearing down the Constitution. They need "change we can believe in".
Maoist, Marxist, Stalinist... hmmm... Obamaist?

Raoul

Sep 6, 2009

Van Jones was nothing but a race hustler, anti-cop demonstrator, Mumia supporter, indoctrinate little kids activist, street thug with an arrest record when he discovered the “green” movement in 2007. So he went legit and published a confused book full of Social Justice meets Save the Earth in 2008. That makes him an expert on green jobs?

To think this was only about calling Republicans a bad name is an insanity endemic only to liberals. Zero in on the most insignificant piece of evidence on the guy and attempt to discredit it. Go ahead and blame Beck - he was just doing the job formerly done by the NYT and the rest of the Obama-worshiping press.

Thanks, Byron.

If a "vicious smear campaign" is what it takes, so be it. From a conservative perspective, Van Jones has been "swift-boated"--that is, the truth was told about him. You'd never hear it from the MSM, however.

Sep 6, 2009

In an earlier scene, I remember Barry staring at his TelePromTer as it hit the ground. And, I've heard him, "um," and "awe" when he wasn't grounded between two TelePromter's. Oh, and I notice the "scholar gates," isn't be interviewed, now ... even though "stupidly" kicked off this parade. It's possible Obama/Soetoro doesn't even know where all this fire power is coming from? But he's learning that the lazy media doesn't shout out "stop the presses." Even when Chelsea's wedding failed to materialize. Hire lazy people, give them fake credentials from yale and haaarvard yard. And, this is, in fact, what you get. When you want competence, don't look to the elites, or the dynasties. While following 9/9/9 (pronounced as the german's saying no/no/no) I expect the House, at least, to go on a feeding frenzy. Hopefully, only a few stupid RINOs will show up. And, we'll see this UN-Civil War for what it's worth.

Sep 6, 2009

The real story is how the ABC, CBS, NBC, NY Times and almost all other newspapers failed to mention the many shocking things that Glenn Beck had discovered about Van Jones.

It continues with the same media outlets ignoring things like Holdren's favorable comments about mandatory abortion and sterilizing agents in drinking water.

Glenn Beck "smeared" Van Jones simply by showing videos of Van Jones's speeches.

Responsible journalists would be looking at how people like Van Jones were chosen and approved as special advisors or czars.

Kind of like Jeremiah Wright --- the choices are

1) I spent 20 years in the church but didn't pay attention to what was being said, or

2) I liked Jeremiah Wright's views.

She has too little free time to waste!

I am continually amazed at how stupid people can be when they don't realize that they are engaging in extremely flawed logic. It is amazing at how ideology can blind a person's mind. So, how does this work. The so called smear campaign was because of what; the smears?? When you are dealing with a Liberal the pointing out of facts, and especially those lying utube videos, are simply not allowed.

I am totally appalled when I see Van Jones on some of the videos, that this man could have ever been appointed to work in government of the United States. But then again, look who put him there....duh...America, aren't you beginning to wonder about Obama's friends. With friends like Jones and Wright, who needs enemies.

Good riddance to bad rubbish! And bad rubbish is stinking up the White House and the ranks of the dems. Jones whines about a smear campaign. The only smear campaign was the one he enacted against himself and America from years back on record. The feces you find on him was rubbed on thick by the very "Van" Jones himself and no one else. And Examiner, your conclusion in above article is weak. It would not pass muster as a proper essay, now would it?

The American way is not communism. Jones was a self avowed communist, Did two stints in prison. Found his radicalism and revolutionary status in prison, Sees released prisoners as potential enforcers, of mandates. Gives speeches at prisons, can't get a copy of theone he gave at San Quentin, The jest is this, the prisoners suffer from stigmatism placed on the m by the current constitution and laws??????

LLOYD, Holdren, Sunstein, Browner, Next to resign, They are really out there somwhere. Jarret should go first.
These people vetted themselves to see if they were compatable with this adminstration. If the American people and the congress and the FBI? was not allowed t o vet them , Then we see perpetual, radicalism, revolutionism, liars, thieves and cheats. Out the door like dirty wash water.

At least your Politicians when they are caught out resign willingly or are told to leave. I am sure Mr Van Jones was given one of these options and for his future career he chose the first. Ours are just corrupt individuals who get support from their 'Brothers'

Vicious ?Well, all I can offer is that the lack of vetting for these posts is suspicious -given the power these individuals can wield. In light of these peacetime appointments ,it is hypocritical in the extreme for Liberals to be "outraged" regarding expanded powers of a Vice President in time of a National Emergency. As Big Daddy said in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" "...There is a smell of MUNDACITY in this room!"
