WH drops Fox thing, goes after Cheney

By: Julie Mason
Examiner White House Correspondent

Grrrr. As usual, the former veep was mightily displeased.   (ap)

In fairness, Dick Cheney totally started it. But like our mom used to say, "Then you be the one who stops it!"

Last night in a speech to the Center for Security Policy, the former vice president called out President Obama for being "afraid" to make a decision on troop levels in Afghanistan.

"The White House must stop dithering while America's armed forces are in danger," Cheney told the conservative gathering. "Make no mistake, signals of indecision out of Washington hurt our allies and embolden our adversaries."

Sounds familiar. What's suprising is not so much the vim with which the former vice president repeatedly goes after the Obama administration -- but how reliably the Obama administration responds. Has no one heard of a dignified silence? Oh, wait. This is Washington. Never mind.

"What Vice President Cheney calls 'dithering,' President Obama calls his solemn responsibility to the men and women in uniform and to the American public," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "I think we've all seen what happens when someone doesn't take that responsibility seriously."

Gibbs said that "it's pretty safe to say" that Cheney spent seven years "not focused on Afghanistan," and called his remarks "curious," since a request for a troop increase languished around the Bush White House for eight months without action, until Obama fulfilled it in March.

"Fuzzy math," Gibbs said.

Gen. David McKiernan in May 2008 wanted to increase troop levels in Afghanistan from 35,000 to 65,000. Obama approved that increase, and is more recently considering increasing troop levels by another 40,000 or so, on the recommendation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal

Another enemy on the WH Enemies List - yawn! What else is new?

Where are the jobs? What about Afghanistan?

Cheney started it? That's ignorant.

Nobody and I mean nobody of any conseqence cares what this poor deluded pathetic ex-vice president has to say. Sir you were involved with an administration that put this great country in the toilet and dragged our reputation through the mud. Please in the name of everything that is decent would you please take your 13%[thats right 13%] approval[?]rating and just go away-far away.

John

Oct 22, 2009

Yes, but enough about Gore, we are here to talk about Cheney.

Too Funny

Oct 22, 2009

Kingoftheslide, if that's your impression of not caring what Cheney thinks, you suck at it. Sounds to me like you care an awful lot. Otherwise, why post?

"Sir you were involved with..."
"Please in the name of everything that is decent..."
Hey kingoftheslide, by any chance have you been taking crazy lessons for Keith Olberman?

Oct 22, 2009

Nobody and I mean nobody of any conseqence....
I do not think that means what you think that means.
Or maybe you hang with those of conseqence, not those of consequence.
That being the case, a 13%[thats right 13%] approval[?]rating for you and the rest of those of conseqence is easily understandable so would you take your deluded pathetic reputation and in the name of everything that is decent just go away-far away?

There, fixed it for you.

That's all well & good but did anyone bother to ask whether the WH was lying when they said they had to start from scratch. Cheney says they supplied them with an involved study including recommendations which they followed. Did anyone ask if this was another farce coming out of the Obama WH?

huh

Oct 22, 2009

Nope. Rahm Emmanuel started it. He is a thug so no surprise there.

Is the White House trying to fight freedom of speech, which is our constitutional right, by fighting Fox News, Cheney and others who disagree with them? Guess the White House is trying to become a total dictatorship with complete censorship.

More and more, I keep getting the impression that Rahm Emmanuel never really stopped working for Hillary.

"Has no one heard of a dignified silence? Oh, wait. This is Washington. Never mind."

I have heard of one. The White House's former occupant was actually a master off it, probably more so than he should been, and still is.

Be that as it may, it is interesting that a President who used to make his own supporters nuts with his seeming unwillingness to ever really swing back at loons like 'kingof..' up there was replaced by one who cannot help himself but go after every seventh grader who tells a joke about him on the playground.

I said to many about Bush that you can judge him how you will, but one thing about him that virtually everyone took for granted was a genuine serenity about his adversaries. I said that it went virtually unnoticed, but that when we had a President without such serenity, it would be noticed and appreciated in hindsight, big time.

By the way.... I was right.

druu222 - You are right.

The bipartisan military force structure that we all agreed on is insufficient to win two wars. Our bipartisan strategy is "win-hold-win", you put enough forces on one war to win it and hold on in the 2nd war, then shift forces over to the 2nd war and then win then.

What does that look like when you've got two counterinsurgency wars? Iraq/Afghanistan, that's what. It's time to execute the strategy, pivot our forces and put in enough troops to complete the mission.

Is win-hold-win a good idea? It sure looked like one in the Clinton administration.

Reading excerpts of Cheney's speech from last night was a bracing tonic from the fussy-butt rhetoric of Obama and his girlie-men.

Meanwhile, Obama's foreign policy empowers the worst while ignoring the best: from the Dalai Lama to Iran's greens, from the hopes of Poland to Afghanistan.

And while our president can fit in snarky speeches at Democratic fund-raisers and attack press freedoms, he has no time to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall. Shame on him.

Give 'em Hell, Mr. Vice President!

Considering the way the WH has been routed by the likes of Palin, Beck and Fox, it may be a good thing they're not talking tough to Iran.

Gotta disagree with you on one particular point, Jules. Cheney didn't start this. Obama and his advisors rarely go a day without blaming the Bush administration for something. I'd be interested to know if Obama has given a single speech without blaming them for something. If he has, I have haven't seen it. It must be his messiah complex that's making him feel like he magically ascended to the Presidency. In actuality, he coveted the job. He ran for it. He's the most un-presidential president I've seen in my 32 years.

Mike H.

Oct 23, 2009

Chris, "He's the most un-presidential president I've seen in my 32 years."

He's the most unpresidential president that I've seen in my 62 years. That's saying a lot because I left the Marine Corps at the end of Carters conundrum.
Lord protect me from the liberals, they keep trying to 'help' me!

It's hilarious that Gibbs was dumb enough to repeat Cheney's use of the word "dithering" to the press -- just to make absolutely certain that the word was widely reported, read and heard by millions, and even more firmly associated with Obama and Afghanistan. Gibbs' ineptitude would be sad if it weren't so funny.

Obama's scepticism of the Iraq troop surge, saying it wasn't working before it even started, saying it didn't work after it obviously did, is entirely political. God help the people in the countries with the highest consequences of Obama's ignorant posturing.

moptop

Oct 23, 2009

The surge worked in Iraq, despite Obama's judgment that it wouldn't, so now troops are available for Obama to use in Afghanistan. It is not that hard to understand.

I am of GREAT consequence and I listen whenever Cheney speaks. He's the reason this country didn't suffer a followup attack to 9-11.

Solemn, responsible dithering. Sure, we can wait around for a few weeks until after the Afghans have their election do-over. Hey, it's not like things are going to hell in a handbasket, right? It's more important that we have a legitimate partner to wage peace with than it is to have enough forces (and the political will, along with the proper rules of engagement) to defeat the Muslim terrorists. Right?

Newsflash: Obama is going to lost Afghanistan because he is a ditherer. And then he'll blame in on Bush and the Republicans, rather than his own lack of testicular fortitude.

Mad Monica

Oct 23, 2009

I wonder when this administration will get done with Campaign 2008? I mean, it's been nearly a year. They've done whatever the heck they've wanted since Obama took office, yet they're still campaigning against Bush/Cheney. Weird. Didn't Obama tell everyone "I won?"

Mad Monica

Oct 23, 2009

Actually, anyone watching his behavior has to admit Obama must be possessed of a large pair. No other president had the cojones to try and cut a news org out of the press pool! I think what the man is missing is character and strength of conviction, which is, technically testicular fortitude. There just isn't any strength in the giant pair of brass ones he's got.

Cheney should just relax, slow down, smell the flowers, take some time to reflect; maybe go bird hunting and take W with him.

question

Oct 23, 2009

Is Obama afraid of making a decision, or is he just waiting until after Nov. 11th? Cheney had every right to call
Obama on this issue, what is wrong with
someone else's opinion. Yes, Obama has been "dithering", he's been "dithering" on everything since he took office.

Dick Cheney has the right to his opinions. Apparently those opinions must be stinging the Obama administration or they wouldn't be making such a big fuss.

Well, it seems that Obama and his staff have millions of people on their list because if you're a Christian; conservative; Republican; gun owner; oppose the left's agendas; attend Tea Parties and Town Hall Meetings; speak out; protest; pray at the White House on prayer day; put up a Christian Christmas ornament on the Christmas tree; don't agree with the hate crimes bill; don't agree with printing trillions of phantom unaccounted for new tax dollars; don't like ObamaCare's program; don't drive a little itsy bitsy energy saving car; don't put in Obama light bulbs or Obama windows; or whatever else they promote or if you're named Cheney or Rush or Sean or Mark or watch FOX - then I guess you're just out of luck since January 2009 and won't be invited to the party!

bytheway

Oct 23, 2009

Bottom line is that Obama is in way over his head. So he has to find enemies to distract *we the people* from focusing on his inexperience. By the way I'm African-American, and I love Fox News.

Wow the right wing nut jobs are still as ignorant and incompetent as ever. Cheney and the repubs are not relevant. they ALREADY had their 17 of house control coupled with 8 years of the president/vp and failed miserably and completly

ryan

Since you seem to be ignorant of history or most likely an intellectually lazy partisan I will help you out so you don't continue to embarrass yourself in the future.

1.It is the democrats that have controlled the house and senate for the last three years. So, following your logic you really should be blaming the democrats for the problems you mentioned above.
2.The fact that president Obama and the white house responded to former vice president Cheney would seem to contradict your “Cheney and the repubs are not relevant” comment. To all, but the simple minded this would be obvious.

Unfortunately I cannot help you with your spelling or grammatical errors. You would actually have to attend some-sort of vocational schooling for that issue.
