White House: Firing AmeriCorps IG an act of "political courage"

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
06/18/09 2:18 PM EDT

A top White House lawyer called the firing of AmeriCorps inspector general Gerald Walpin an act of "political courage," according to House Republican aides who were in a meeting with the lawyer Wednesday.

Norman Eisen, who is the White House Special Counsel to the President for Ethics and Government Reform, met with staffers for Rep. Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Wednesday.  Eisen, along with another White House staffer who accompanied him, "wanted to talk broadly about inspectors general," says a GOP aide familiar with what went on at the meeting.  "When we pressed them on specific questions and documents, they said they weren't prepared to give us information on that."

In one exchange, according to the GOP aide, the White House lawyers explained that inspector general Walpin was not working well with the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees AmeriCorps, and the administration believed that IGs should work well with the leadership of their agencies.  Eisen said he knew that removing Walpin might be seen as an action that would raise questions.  "But [Eisen] said that what they did in trying to fix the situation was an act of political courage -- and 'political courage' is the phrase they used," says the aide.

Republicans, along with a few Democrats, have been concerned about the White House's methods in removing Walpin.  The law requires the president to give Congress 30 days' notice, plus the cause for the firing of an inspector general.  In Walpin's case, the White House called Walpin out of the blue, gave him one hour either to resign or be fired, and only later notified Congress, and then without giving any cause for its action. Only later, after a lone Democrat, Sen. Claire McCaskill, said the White House "failed to follow the proper procedure" and requested a written explanation for the firing, did the White House respond.

For more on the White House's refusal to answer questions about the firing, see here.

"Political Courage" or "Political Arrogance"?

Jun 18, 2009

So it's courageous to break the law....a law that obama co-sponsored....to fire a man who actually did his job????? Ahhh, bu thtere's the rub. In doing his job, he exposed an Obammunist as being corrupt. Apparently this is what "political courage" means to a script reading Chicago communist street punk.

So which is it, first they said Walpin is senile, and now the story is that he was not working well with them. Is this considered a better "spin" by O-hacks Emanuel & Carville? Saw him on Glenn Beck yesterday, he is a sharp man...

Jun 18, 2009

So the second explanation is as vague as the first. Too bad it did not extend the first one, now team Obama needs to explain why he lied the first time!

Hold on a moment while I put some taller boots on -- it's getting a bit high. I saw this guy on Glenn Beck's show yesterday and I hope he keeps fighting back! They had no grounds and Obama's gang makes the rules up as they go along.

"Political courage" ... as the reporter implied here ... the point is that this position was supposed to be a non-political position. The IG was doing his job and politics is not supposed to be a part of this. It seems the law would see this firing not as political courage but political malfeasance.

George

Jun 18, 2009

Where is the political courage? If there was a problem, why wasn't this handled through the standard dispute resolution channels? What was the hurry? One can only conclude a nerve was struck by the uncovering of activities that did not belong here and as a result, Mr. Walpin was dismissed. There can be other other conclusion reached that would justify violating the very law the President swore to uphold. And lacking a clear and coherent explanation one can only conclude the smoke detected is the product of a fire that must be addressed by Congress and a special prosecutor.

Woo-hoo. Firing an IG in the midst of an investigation of confirmed misconduct by a FOO (Friend of Obama) is "an act of political courage". Firing of a few Federal Prosecutors who serve at the president's pleasure by President Bush is an act that "should require appointment of a special prosecutor". Firing of ALL the Federal Prosecutors by President Clinton is "nothing to see here, move along." The Dems double standards are becoming more and more brazen, and the independent voters are slowly starting to pay attention. We can only hope by 2010 those voters are wide awake to what is happening to their country.

WE LISTENED TO THE DEMS/MEDIA COMPLAIN, AD NAUSEAM, ABOUT BUSH FIRING SOME LAWYERS..............BUT OBAMA VIOLATES A LAW HE SPONSORED IN FIRING AN IG AND NOT A WORD FROM THE DEM/MEDIA.

Son of Bob

Jun 18, 2009

So, Bush fires several staff attorneys, as is his right to do (Clinton fired ALL upon taking office), and we have eight years of demands of charges and investigations. Obama breaks several laws, one of which he co-sponsored, and it's supposed to be labeled an "act of political courage"? Was that what it was called when Nixon tried a similar action?

They really do think the American people are stupid!Given the results of the last election I can see how they(Washington)would conclude such an idea and the way the news outlets report the issues really do help them in this theory. What they FAIL to accept is this.. WE WILL ONLY TAKE SO MUCH FOR SO LONG.Just because most of us are busy raising our kids or working doesn't mean we don't have a clue as to what they are doing to our country. We are simmering now....

Beware America, this stupid president wants to be the boss of everyone and has no intentions of following the rules. He intends to run everything the way he wants to and he will make new rules if the old ones don't suit him. I predict that History will show him to be the biggest fraud in history when he admits to the world he is muslim and haha "fooled" the world. He has the biggest ego of anyone I have ever seen and he thinks he is GOD. He needs to take his nose out of the air and get his face off my tv set. I will never like him and won't listen to anything he says. Those who voted him him are just beginning to regret what they have done..Have some, you stupid people.

Jun 18, 2009

"When we pressed them on specific questions and documents, they said they weren't prepared to give us information on that." Given the law requires them to provide that very type of information 30 days BEFORE the firing how is that a reasonable excuse? "Walpin was not working well with the board" So today he isn't senile and demented? He worked fine just that he didn't play well with others? This is getting better and better....

It's increasingly obvious that when this administration uses over the top terms, such as 'political courage', or makes statements that are unusually personal, it's their modus operandi for managing the media narrative in their favor. More than any administration I've observed over the last 20 years or so, the reality of any situation is easily understood by assuming it to be the exact opposite of administration statements. Eventually, it will have to stop when Obama insists that up, is in fact, down (and only evil speculators are trying to say otherwise) in terms that not even ABC or the NYT can reproduce with a straight face.

Jun 18, 2009

I have heard Mr Walpin speak, and he is excellent. This firing was based on the investigation of a personal friend of Obama. All the other expainations are HOGWASH! Beyond that legislation was passed in 2008 REQUIRING a 30 day notification, which included the reason(s) for the firing. Then Senator Obama was a co-sponsor of that legislation!

(AP) — The FBI is investigating allegations that an executive at a nonprofit founded by Mayor Kevin Johnson obstructed a federal inquiry into the group's spending. Two months ago, Johnson and the St. HOPE Academy agreed to repay nearly $424,000 in federal grants to settle an investigation into whether the nonprofit misused AmeriCorps money. Acting U.S. Attorney Lawrence G. Brown said he asked the FBI's Sacramento division to determine whether e-mails written by Johnson were deleted during the earlier investigation.

What Walpin did , as a good Auditor, was to question any and all improprieties. It is up to the other party to answer and defend their actions. If the Auditor considers the answer indefensible, then he reports to the next in command. This is what he did. Political courage?! Are you kidding me?Courage is a behavior that occurs when someone acts in spite of being afraid. Is Obama afraid of the people he fired, the people who hired him, or the media? No way. He did it because be could. The media would not act as a "check-and-balance" system as they should because they voted for him! The relationships that exist here are incestuous in nature. "In one exchange, according to the GOP aide, the White House lawyers explained that inspector general Walpin was not working well with the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees AmeriCorps, and the administration believed that IGs should work well with the leadership of their agencies."...That's the whole point, right? When an IG finds the organization he or she is monitoring is committing malfeasance, then the play nice in the sandbox game is over. At that point, their role shifts from friendly overseer to policeman. At that point, the relationship SHOULD get hostile.

Chicago-style cronyism has reached the White House, and we are all paying for it. BHO can't find his own long-form birth certificate, but he can decide that Walpin is losing his marbles? Guess he couldn't seal up the IG's report (like he did his passport, school records, college records...) so he had to fire him to shut him up. We are in for "transparency and accountability" that will make the Clintons look honest! Pay your friends with taxpayer money, fire the barking watchdogs in violation of the law, and dream up new ways to steal from the people! Time for a new Jefferson, Adams, Washington & crew to take this country back from the delusional Marxists ruining the economy for their own personal gain.

It needs to be put on a starvation diet (no money) till it croaks, this is the only way to destroy the embedded massive corruption that has been going on for too long. It takes upwards of 40% of your income. It is a place where 536 people get to tell 333,000,000 American what to do, tells the states what to do. It does not work and must be terminated...

Remember the fuss that was raised by liberals and the press when Bush fired the US Attorneys who serve at the pleasure of the president? Where is the fuss over the fact that Obumma violated the law over this firing. There was no political courage. Besides, the IG should not necessarily get along well with the board. It's not his job to get along with the board, it's his job to be independent and investigate fraud being perpetrated by the board. That's why IGs are, by law, independent

Re:Reply to "Bush ad did the same."

There is a huge difference between Bush firing eight attorneys that worked on behalf of the president and Obama breaking a LAW that he co-sponsored that requires a 30 day advance notice of an IG's firing. I pray for this country.

This country better wake up. Those elected in congress are more concerned about $$$ in their pocket, power, their committee spots than they are the country. Where is the outrage? You won't see it from the mainstream media. They are clearly in this administration's pocket. The voice of the people needs to be heard on this. Everything points to he does not have a clue how to run a country and he appears to be arrogant, like most left wing socialist, and ignorant. That combination is horrible. Look for Democrats to lose seats in 2010 and probably the presidency in 2012. They can't continue looking back at Bush and lying like dogs about everything they are doing. It's almost over, sooner rather than later the public will turn against him. That means independents and those who can think on their own. I'm tired of the liberals and Obama living by one set of rules, while the rest of of have to follow another. It's disgusting how they can say or do anything and yet after a few days the issue is dropped. Like Pelosi accusing the CIA of lying and then having the gall to say she's not going to prove it or discuss it anymore, or the big tax cheat in charge of OUR money, or Obama signing documents even though he said he'd wait five days and give us a chance to read them. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!! This is still OUR country, and we STILL have the right to call and email our "representatives". One day, that may not be the case. You 53 million idiots who voted for the s "silver tongue" community organizer, had better wake-up and smell the coffee as this country, you and me are going down the drain and the government will be dictating every thing we say, do, eat, the doctors we see, what type of treatment we can receive, etc. This is becoming a Dictatorship and the American Public are too stupid to realize it. Wake-up you stupid, uninformed people before we loose it all!!!!!!!!!!!

Working American citizens, it is us that keep funding this wacko and his henchmen by working everyday. The only way to take charge is to have a nationwide workers strike. What the hell are we all afraid of? Everyone from CEO's to part time workers have got to band together and choke off the lifeline to these nutjobs. You can't be fired if there is no one there to fire you. It would only take about 4 weeks to bring this government down!

President Obama is a very dangerous person. This is the change that everyone wanted? Now the consequences might start to sink in -- I hope all you idiots who voted for "change" feel great living with a socialistic / communistic government. Obama and virtually all the Demo-commies such as Nancy Mussolini (idiot #1), Schmuky Schoomer, et al, should be driven out of office on a rail. These people are the complete antithesis of the United States, Freedom, Liberty -- they are killing America! Oh yeah, and on the list of lousy politicians remember that includes your congressman and your senator ... not all but yours. You want change? ... vote your lousy representatives out -- don't pledge your souls to any party! Vote for freedom and liberty!

We need more people of character like Inspector General Walpin to slow the Obama crazy train down. Politicians, bank officers, business leaders, and voters nationwide need to start standing up and saying NO to the Democrats. NO to more out-of-control deficit spending, NO to higher taxes and more regulation, NO to government ownership of private enterprise, NO to releasing terrorists, NO to apologizing for America, NO to bowing down to worship foreign leaders, and NO to wasteful spending, scare tactics, and fraud perpetrated on the American people.

If 0bama is so politically courageous why not be forthright and take this issue head on instead of hiding behind his lawyers and pretending this firing wasn't politically motivated and illegal. He ought to know the law on this illegal firing, he co-sponsored it. I forgot, was that before or after lawmakers stopped reading the laws they passed?

The President of the United States shows political courage when he stands up against a 77 year old IG who is doing the job Congress appointed him to do, root out corruption, waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer's money. So if that's political courage, what do you call Obama's contemptuous attitude toward the Iranian democrats and lovers of liberty protesting in Teheran?

This one is just too good to pass up. obama has told one outrageous lie after another: government transparency; fiscal responsibility; defend our Constitution. But his one is just too boldfaced for words. obama is so full of himself that he is sacrificing the political goodwill he gained in the election, and getting nothing for his sacrifice in return. "and the administration believed that IGs should work well with the leadership of their agencies." What B.S. The IG's are supposed to be the watchdogs over the agencies, to prevent fraud and waste of taxpayer money. If the board is wasting money, or is corrupt, as it appears CNCS is, it's not likely the board and the IG are going to work well together. What they meant to say was, the IG should keep his mouth shut and go along with whatever corruption the board has planned. CNCS/Americorp is nothing but a slush fund for Obama supporters. Once they get rid of all the non-compliant IG's, they can get to the business of paying back their supporters. Walpin isn't the only IG that's been fired in the last few weeks.

mbs

Jun 18, 2009

We all need to remember that when Walpin was summarily and illegally fired, he was objecting to the settlement entered into with Johnson, by which Johnson avoided prosecution, agreed to pay back 1/2 of the stolen money through an insolvent corporation (which means the payback will never occur), and was allowed to continue to handle federal money. THAT'S WHAT THIS IS ABOUT, AND IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE! The sweetheart deal Johnson got, which puts him right back into position to continue to steal money, is wrong and someone needs to keep objecting to it, now that they've effectively silenced Walpin.

Let's see if I recall correctly. These are the same Democrats who were complaining not too long ago about GWB replacing ten U.S. Attorneys? The only difference is that the U.S. Attorney serves at the pleasure of the President. I believe the Inspector Generals were created by Congress to be independant viewers of fact, for the various Federal Agencies. Big difference and no the President should not be able to fire the person except for cause and with all legal rights in play. Come on Democrats, you can't have it both ways .......What is it going to be?

Everyone, keep your eyes on the ball. Instead of focusing on just this issue, all of you should demand your state congressmen to call for a constitutional convention to bind and shackle all three branches of Federal government. All of them. They are all out of control. As far as I'm concerned most of them are criminals. It takes 2/3 of states to call the convention and it takes 3/4 of all States to ratify. A super majority. It would be hard to have the convention run out of control. They need to decide what to meet upon and stick to it. Take a look at what Randy Barnett has for his federalism amendment proposal; Also take a look at the or the counterproposal at Mises.org. The Federal government needs to be placed back into its Constitutionaly mandated size. It is not our friend. The Federal government lives for itself.

Jun 18, 2009

Well, the administration didn't stop with firing 3 IGs and stifling a 4th. They fired the highly productive and ethical IG at AMTRAK today! Ya think there's a trend. The AMTRAK IG had exposed tons of contracting fraud and uncovered the funneling of contracts to mob-infested companies. LOL - Doesn't work well with the heads of the agencies... OK - So we have a have a new template. Gotta love it. When N. Korea wants to kick out inspectors because they actually want to do oversight, we have no basis to complain. When the farmer objects to Obama sticking a wolf in the hen house as an "inspector," we have no basis to complain. When Iran tells the inspectors to go to hell, they can legitimately claim that the inspectors weren't getting on well with their agencies. And when the police want to monitor me as I navigate through traffic, I should be able to fire them because they're not working well with me. Yeah - right. I never thought someone would be able to top, "It depends on what the meaning of is is." But clearly, Obama was taking notes and figuring out how to do doublespeak, Orwellspeak, Orwellequality better than the Clintons could even dream of. Courage. My late grandmother's corset.

Our Abu Hussein from Kenya shows his face like he was a new Julius Caesar - looking at us from above with disdain. He is drunk with power, and protects his ACORN brownshirts with vigor that does not allow for discussion. That honest inspector has lost "his confidence"??? And that criminal Sacrament mayor has to return $500,000 that were misappropriated!!

We don't need no stinkin' Inspectors General. What we need are more CZAR'S! Yeah, at least 20 or 30 more. They don't have to bother Congress with that silly "oversight" thing because they only report to one man, Dear Leader. They have control of TRILLIONS of taxpayer dollars but they will keep an eye on each other so it will be OK. You can go back to your business, people, everything is under control here. Dear Leader is at the helm.

Obama will not make it through the 3rd year for by then he'll have become un-done by his scandal after scandal after scandal. Corruption the old fashioned way, Chicago politics, will un-do him. Bummers for him and bummers for America.

It's obvious the IG uncovered some wrongdoing and Obama didn't want his friend embarrassed or the truth to come out. This guy surrounds himself with the most corrupt and may I say inept people ever to disgrace out doorsteps. Typical Chicago politics, and Mexico's Government would be proud of P.E.B.O. I agree, special prosecutor.

"Political Courage"??? Are you kidding me??? This man has NO courage at all! He will NOT protect this country unless there is political gain in it for him...By the time he figures out that he has no choice, it will be too late! God help us!

More like political chutzpah. It seems increasingly more likely to me that this was vindictiveness in action on the part of the White House.

Jun 19, 2009

Political courage was outing the corrupt 'The Messiah's' crony on the part of the IG. Firing someone with lies, deception, slander and BS is business as usual in little Chi-town on the Potomac. This is the most corrupt, most imperial, most incompetent and most out of touch administration I have witnessed in my life and I lived through Nixon and Carter. This is not my beautiful county....

When the President of the United States commits a criminal act it is incumbent on the Senate to impeach him. Failure to do so is a dereliction of duty by senators and a failure to uphold the oath they took to protect the Constitution when entering office.

Do not diminish Michelle involvement. There was a reason for the one hour notice. Walpin was phone called on june 10th wednesday evening, and Michelle was returning from London on june 11th thursday afternoon. In other words, get rid of him before michelle arrives back in town so she doesnt have fingerprints.

Obama inherited this firing...wait, that won't work...But Bush fired 8 AGs...No, that won't work either as Attorneys General aren't the same as Inspectors General. Only Inspectors General are protected by the relatively new law requiring 30 days notice and a reason, the bill having been written by McCaskill (a dem) and sponsored by another dem by the name of Obama who was a Senator at the time...hhmmmm...I don't know why or how, but this has just got to be Bush's fault.

Who is this guy who is all powerful? Surrounded by crooks and tax cheats. I mean, really, who is he? He's gone by at least two different names we know of, has spent nearly a million dollars to keep us from seeing his birth certificate and has all these "yes" boys" (not men) around him. Even the Brits call him President Panywaist. Where's the tranparency? Where's the nation of laws? Next he'll be issuing uniforms to the 20 million illegals who have invaded this country and make them Obozo's army...

e pluribus unum

Jun 23, 2009

Judging purely by your posts, you people are mostly loons. What a mix of the ignorant - minds flush with rush, ravaged by savage, wrecked by beck, and filled with insanity from hannity - and the knowingly complicit domestic spin-terrorists. And all 50 of you huddling under this little tent in the front yard of an editorially partisan propagandist rag. I have a request: Give - Up - The - Hate. Please, just let it go. Life is so much more rich without the hate and the fear that comes along with it. Those after whom you are modeling your behavior are pursuing their own vested interests. They do not give two cents about what happens to you or me. Try not to live by means of ignorance. If you are regurging, as gospel truth, information from some guy on the radio who has said: "I'm not a journalist - I'm an entertainer", how smart does that make you? ... Not very. Best Regards

spirit of desception

Jun 23, 2009

Feel sorry for Obama. He has no clue to his stupidity. At a young age he was brainwashed and he lacks wisdom and over compensates with ego. School grades are not talent, leadership and most important wisdom. Unfortunately the 51% who voted are under the spirit of deception and good people like Walpin suffer. God bless Walpin and his family.
