Whose side is the New York Times on?

The New York Times has revealed that its reporter David Rohde was kidnapped and held by terrorists in Afghanistan for seven months and that it and, at its request, other media refrained from reporting this to protect Rohde’s safety. The story has come out only after Rohde was rescued by American forces. Here is the Times’s explanation for covering up this story.

“From the early days of this ordeal, the prevailing view among David’s family, experts in kidnapping cases, officials of several governments and others we consulted was that going public could increase the danger to David and the other hostages. The kidnappers initially said as much,” said Bill Keller, the executive editor of the Times. “We decided to respect that advice, as we have in other kidnapping cases, and a number of other news organizations that learned of David’s plight have done the same. We are enormously grateful for their support.”

To which I’m inclined to say, good for the Times and for all those, including conservative blogger Ed Morrissey, who kept the lid on this story.
But the Times of course did not take the same approach when it published its December 2005 story on NSA surveillance of communications between suspected terrorists abroad and persons in the United States and its June 2006 story on the entirely legal Swift surveillance of terrorist financing.
Bill Keller was a wonderful reporter, whose coverage of the downfall of the apartheid system in South Africa and the downfall of Communism in Russia deserved all the awards he received. He’s a fine writer and was a thoughtful and interesting columnist for a couple of years early in this decade. But his decisions and those of his colleagues at the Times indicate pretty clearly whose side they are on. They are determined to protect their brave and admirable colleagues from danger. But they are not concerned to protect the people of the United States and friendly nations from dangers which, while perhaps more remote, have proved painfully real, and not only on September 11, 2001. They seem to see themselves as transnational journalists, with responsibilities to their colleagues and their profession, but with no particular responsibilities as American citizens.

i am dissapointed in ed morrisey. i dont think if he would have reported this the guy would have been killed. the games the new york times plays with our safety as american citizens is life and death. they dont respect our lives why should we respect theres? we shouldn't at all. we should go out of our way to get them killed. how many great men died in wars defending america. sometimes death comes with trying to promote great things.

Just more of the lefts HYPOCRISY. Keller and Pinch's ideoligy trumps ALL, and their P&L statement reflects the worth of their arguments.

Thank you Michael Baron for pointing out the incredible hypocracy of Bill Keller and the New York Times. I believe your assessment is spot on. While their action (or really, inaction) in the case of their reporter was correct it also show the mindset of the media in very clear terms. Perhaps a bit of reflection by them is needed more that self congratulatory rhetoric

The NYTimes is on the way to bankruptcy, just like its subsidiary the Boston Globe, because it is no longer a legitimate news organization since its pubisher, "pinch" Sulzburger conducted his own socialist agenda at a formerly great paper. As wsa reported, and not refuted, in "The Trust" Sulzberger said he would rather see an American soldier die at the hands of a communist in a fire fight. His father thought his feelings qualified as treason, but he runs the paper into the grave with his unrepentant view of the country that protected him while he hid under his desk.

The New York Times and Bill Keller has absolutely no credibility. I wonder why they are losing subscribers at a substantive rate?

Had I known about the kidnapping I would have made it public it two seconds. Traitors, useful idiots and their hangers on need to know that there is a price to be paid for it. Perhaps had Mr. Rhodes had his head cut off due to blown cover the despicable rats at the NY Times would think twice before revealing sensitive info about others. I URGE anyone with info that places NY Times reporters and informants in danger to immediatly make that info public i the future.

There is no price to be paid for the horrendous behavior of folks like Keller and his ilk. There was a time when folks like that would be handled in the appropriate manner. Fifth columnists and out right traitors like Michael Ware of CNN spent YEARS on tv during the worst of the Iraq fighting doing their best to get American and allied troops killed. If the government wont or cant act then the troops i danger should take care of business. A few rats being fragged would go a long way.

Do you even need to ask whose side NYT is on? Definitely not on the American citizens side. They've proven it time and time again

Dear Tyler, Get some help, quick! You're letting those in the gutter drag you into the gutter.

Bill Keller is a left-wing kook. The New York Times is a disgusting, BIASED hard-left organization. Their enemy is the Republicans and if they could make it difficult for George Bush to succeed, they would do it. Hence the New York Times story exposing to the WORLD how George Bush and the US is tracking and finding terrorists. Bill Keller is nothing but white trash.

Says tyler: "the games the new york times plays with our safety as american citizens is life and death. they dont respect our lives why should we respect theres?" Because "we" hold ourselves to a higher standard than the New York Times.

None dare call it treason? I do. The publication of information about the terrorist surveillance and financial surveillance programs by the Times, in defiance of pleas from the president, fully fits the definition of giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war. Keller and the others responsible for the decision should be spending the rest of their lives in prison. I have never read that ex-newspaper since. I spit on it.

randy dunlap i dont think it makes me a gutter rat to want an eye for an eye. and appolo you say that we hold ourselves to a higher standard and i think thats our problem. we have to do what they do if we want to win. i mean how has it helped our side to hold ourselves to a higher standard. thats why i wish the politicians would take the gloves off and play dirty in dc. the media holds us to a higher standard because of us acting this way.

It is no secret that the New York Times is as treasonis and the traitors they represent...and that is the democrats!..When there demise comes..it will be of no suprize..and will be welcomed.

The only source for Ed Morrissey's claim that he knew about the kidnapping months ago is -- Ed Morrissey. I don't buy it for a second. He's just doing his thing of trying to weasel his way into a story, because nobody pays attention to the blowhard otherwise.

Whose side is the NY Times on? Not on the side of this country and our interests. Certainly not on the side of our national security. Certainly not on the side of our economic prosperity. The side of the New York times is the same as Pres. Hussein: socialism and Marxist dictatorship.

Glad you wrote this story. This was the very first thought I also had when I read about Rohde. The hypocrisy of the liberal left makes me want to puke.

What is the celebration for? The NYT's did not get him released, he escaped no thanks to them. When were they going to say something about his kidnapping when they found his body in an alley in Tehran.

You people are idiots for criticizing the Times for making a decision to try to protect a human life. Clear the brainwash and just think for once... Maybe a little empathy. What if it had been you or are you that isolated?

Matt, we're not criticizing the Times' decision to hold back the info on their reporter. We're criticizing the Times' decisions to release information that jeopardizes American lives.

The NY Times is nothing more than a left-wing rag. The paper has been losing money for years now. I'd like to know who's paying to keep the doors open.

Along with vital virtues, such as protecting us from tyrants, from the anti-religious zealots, etc., George Bush was weird on certain points, such as tolerating traitors like NYTimes. This contributed to the approaching disasters.
