Why does Obama keep snubbing the British?

By: Byron York

At the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, and at the UN Security Council meeting before that, Barack Obama continued his administration's new policy toward Great Britain: declare that the "special relationship" between the U.S. and the U.K. is as strong as ever, and then act as if there is no such relationship at all.

The British papers were filled with the news that the president would not grant Prime Minister Gordon Brown a one-on-one meeting. "Mr. Obama had refused five separate requests from the prime minister for a private meeting during his U.S. trip for the UN summit in New York," reported the Daily Mail.

The White House downplayed the reports. "Stop reading those London tabloids," spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters aboard Air Force One Thursday. But Gibbs did not deny reports that the White House had turned down Brown's requests for a meeting.

"Gordon Brown, are we snubbing him?" asked a reporter. "And if not, why did we turn down five requests for bilaterals?"

"The notion that there remains anything other than a special relationship between the two countries is silly and absurd," Gibbs answered. "The President spoke with Prime Minister Brown on the phone in the lead-up to G20 just two weeks ago. They spent time after the climate change dinner on Monday. They spent time after the Security Council today, and obviously went into the Friends of Pakistan meeting together, on an issue that's of great concern to both countries. So I think this is a media-generated bunch of silliness."

"Bunch of silliness?"

"Bunch of silliness."

"But why did we turn down the request for a bilateral?" the reporter pressed.

"Because we're talking to them constantly," Gibbs answered. "The notion that you can only do this in one meeting I think would -- doesn’t make any sense. Because of the special relationship we have, we're in constant communication."

That's not how the British saw it. A columnist in the Telegraph noted that last Monday's paper carried a picture of a British soldier who had been killed in Afghanistan. Alongside the picture was a report "that the prime minister was forced to dash through the kitchens of the UN in New York to secure a few minutes 'face time' with President Obama after five requests for a sit-down meeting were rejected by the White House."  The headline for the column: "Barack Obama's churlishness is unforgivable."

Still the White House didn't budge. And then, in an unexpected development, Obama was forced to make a statement regarding the revelation of the secret Iranian nuclear enrichment plant. At an early-morning appearance Friday, Obama demanded Iran comply with UN Security Council resolutions on its nuclear program. And who was standing behind president as he spoke? Gordon Brown, along with French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Shortly after that, Gibbs' office sent out a press release: "President Obama to hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown today." At long last, Brown, whose appearance with Obama at the Iran statement helped convey a sense of unity and resolution among the allies, got his meeting. The two leaders discussed mostly Iran and Afghanistan, a statement said. But whatever was discussed seemed to take a back seat to the fact that the meeting nearly didn't happen. "The get-together at the end of the Pittsburgh summit will be seen as a scant consolation for the earlier refusal to meet," reported the Telegraph.

It's clear to everyone that Brown is on his last political legs. Perhaps that has something to do with the White House's behavior, although no one in the administration can say that publicly. But it won't be long before there is a new British prime minister. Will Obama, in need of allied support on Iran and Afghanistan, give him the same treatment?

This is just one of many string of events that Obama has snubbed or been rude to our allies.

Let's see... he undermines America's position very publicly on multiple occasions, the latest being the stupid and naive speeches at the UN. He has thrown under the bus: Hondurus, Israel, Czech, Poland, all of Eastern and Western Europe, the former/now free Soviet states (Georgia, Estinia etc) - all the while siding with Castro, Ortega, Chavez, Putin etc - what is going on? Sucking up to tin pot dictators - wanting to have "meaningful dialogues" - what crap. We have a crap president (little p - no respect).
He is the laughing stock of the world, and enemies must be lusting - or is that Jimmie lusting?

Just think of how many of our (some becoming recent) allies have been thrown under the bus. Hondurus, Czech, Poland, Israel, all of Eastern Europe - dis England. And side with tin pot despot dictators like Chavez, Castro, Putin etc
Didn't get much play, but the Congressional Research office came out last week saying it was NOT a coup in Hondurus - the steps taken against the former president were legal and justified. Our president wants to be a tin pot, despot commie lovin' dictator.
Why not completely and totally unilaterally disarm - not just nukes. All the thugs would love him.
He is the laughing stock of the world.

Didn't Pat Buchanan once say, in the early 1990s, that his anti-Semitic comments were really just "anti-British"?

Obama is a puppet. The more I hear from him the more I think there's someone pulling his strings that remains unseen. The question is will anyone ever find out who the true puppeteer really is?

David Axelrod seems to be the middleman in all of this and Rahm Emanuel appears to be the bouncer or maybe the "political hitman", so who is the mastermind?

Its not that Obama hates the British of Gordon Brown, its that he hates all democratic allies of the US. He has worked overtime snubbing and alienating democracies. See: Honduras, Israel, Czech Republic, Poland, England. Shall we add Ukraine, Georgia, Japan and South Korea to the list?

Traditional aliances do not fit in Obama's plan for a World Government, with himself as the head. He needs like minded dictator types to administrate in Europe, S. America, The Middle East, China, ect.

You guys need to stop relying on your strict diet of right-wing propaganda as your only news source. Maybe you could actually take a history class or two and a global issues class so you have some real information to arm yourself with when you're being fed all this bull crap. Oh yeah, but the universities are all leftist, too? Right? Better yet, take anything the right-wing says with a dubious grain of salt and then spend sometime doing some real investigation with other sources. You really owe it to yourself and the world to get to the truth of things. There's corruption out there for sure, but the right-wing smoke-screen hype is just that, an attempt to confuse it's zombie followers from who the real criminals are, those in their own backyard.

Teri, from the spelling of your name I would guess you are fairly young. Most of the posters on this site and others are old enough to have received a very good education a number of years ago and we do know our history. We also follow global issues and do get our information from numerous sites. I see no examples from you, just generalities and finger shaking. So please quit acting as if you are the end all and be all of what we, the great unwashed, should think about issues that concern all of us.

Sep 27, 2009

Teri,
You gave me the best laugh of the day... calling people who normally think in a manner that reflects conservatism "zombie followers" is a hoot. Seriously Teri, you need to get a grip. The only Zombies I have seen recently are the Obamanauts who blindly follow the former junior senator from Illinois with no credible executive leadership skills. Both Barry Hussein and his wife have long expressed disdain for the English for their role in slavery and colonialism. Its in their DNA and they just can't help themselves. Now go and chug down another Red Bull and go out and play with your friends. Leave this to serious grown ups.

I'm just really tired of being called silly by this administration. Anytime anyone asks a real question, they're labeled "silly."

And, Teri, just what is the truth? Like most people who share your views, you tell us not to do the very thing you're doing! What don't you understand about that?

Sep 27, 2009

It's clear Obama doesn't intend to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. He's all talk and no action on purpose.
He is also clearly snubbing countries who were our allies through history and especially under the Bush administration.

Teri,
You are young enough to have received the usual liberal education of this era and seem unable to think critically for yourself. You don't have the personal integrity, maturity or taste not to sprinkle unattractive street language descriptors (example: bull crap) into what you probably thought would be an intelligent argument. Grow up and keep up with your education -- you will need it.

Teri,

You must be the most popular girl on the site, with all the responses you are getting.

But you really must improve your communication and debating skills. All you did was level insults at we right-wingers, but you never once cited a fact that would contradict anyone's argument.

Your assumption that truth only comes from the left indicates to me that YOU are the kool-aid drinker here ("google" the Jonestown Massacre to learn the origination of that term), so filled with hatred for your political opponents that you are foaming at the mouth when you try to speak (figuratively speaking, of course).

But maybe there is hope for you yet, especially if you are as young as some here think you are.

Obammie and his appointees are on track to have the most spectacularly failed presidency in American history. They know nothing about economics, are historically illiterate, and painfully small minded for the size of the tasks that confront them. 2010 can't come soon enough!

I wonder how many of the mis-steps have been deliberate, and how many have simply been the result of inexperience and lack of perspective? It's hard to imagine, but BHO was only 21 when the Falklands War happened, and only 30 when the Berlin Wall fell. I would not be surprised at all if for him the "Iron Curtain" literally means nothing.

Teri needs to grow up, learn true history, and thank every soldier (past and present) for keeping her/his country safe for her/him to grow up in. She/he should study a little Ronald Reagan too. I mostly agree with Mad Monica and Commonsense. Obama had the least amount of experience, he surrounded himself with liberal and radical people, and yet people voted for him. (I'm sure that many of those people are sorry they did.) He promised change, and change we are getting, the end of our country as we know it and beginning of Marxism as Obama knows it. Bring on 2010 for our change and 2912 for Obama's change.

144 days in the Senate; a couple of campaign he won by shanghai-ing the vote; never a serious position taken on anything except a rock-solid belief in a mothers right to murder her own child, and now he's President of the United States?
Am I the only person who finds this; this nullity an odd person to win the White House - on his own?

Didn't Obummer's Mau-Mau Grandpa (back in Kenya) get "tortured" by the Brits..
Remember, Obummer also returned a bust of Winston Churchil that was offered as a gift from Brown and the UK Govt!
And Winnie was the PM or a senior member of the UK govt at about the time the Mau-Mau were running amuck "community organizing" all over the Kenyan countryside...
That might explain why Obummer doesn't like the Brits...

He has no idea how to be a President. He takes his orders from his Liberal Democratic Party and just follows along what ever the teleprompter says in front of him. Hey, this is the change they promosed, and this is what we got instead. I hope the nation learns it's lesson about what the Liberals are all about. Lies, and pushing their own agenda instead of what the nation really wants.

Although i agree with most of obama's polices that i have heard (especialy an american NHS, mainly because it would technically leave more money in the pocket of the average joe because the tax would be less than the average insurance, i should know it works here in britain and it also helps people who cannot afford insurance) but he is playing a very dangerous game snubbing his closest allies, especialy as if it wasnt for brown this recession would be alot worse (reseach it its true). also it is deeply unprofessional to hold a grudge with britain over what happened in their ex- colonies(usa being one of them) which was centuries earlier and has no ties with modern britain. i for one hope that this is all media spin as i love america and its people(except for the over patriotic idiots who believe it is the only free country in the world) and i also hope that you love us brits.

actually Obama is snubbing the British and most of Western Europe purposely but calmly. Europe's anti-Americanism has grown to such a level that America sees the alliances as weak or defunct. The recent summit with China and China's growing snubs of Europe have sent some important signals. Europe is in decline. The population is declining, the "union" is not unified, foreign policies differ between each nation state and the notion of an EU president is laughable. It seems America is moving in a new "Eastern" direction and will care less what Europe thinks. After all, we wanted them out of our lives, didn't we?
