Mark Tapscott: Biden's 'Jesus Christ' expletive is hate speech.

By: Mark Tapscott
Editorial Page Editor
July 28, 2009

People say you should never make small talk on politics or religion with mere acquaintances or strangers because those are topics about which many people have strongly held views that they don't care to have challenged by just anybody.

It's also long been the rule among prudent politicians with national aspirations to say nothing unkind about anybody's religious faith. But the silence that has greeted Vice President Joe Biden's use of "Jesus Christ" as an expletive in an on-the-record interview with The Wall Street Journal, suggests that such prudence has been tossed aside.

Biden isn't the first nor will he be the last politician to abuse the name of the man revered for two millennia by Christians of every denomination as the Savior, the God-Man who created and sustains the universe, and who at His Second Coming will someday return to Earth to judge all men. Jesus Christ is, in short, a heavy dude, if He is indeed the dude He claimed to be.

I have no idea what the vice president believes about Jesus. What I do know is that he apparently thought nothing of taking the name described in Holy Scripture "as the only name given under Heaven by which men are saved" and used it the same way most people routinely use the words "damn," "hell," and others unfit to print in a family newspaper.

Having myself uttered such words on too many occasions, I can hardly fault Biden if this particular incident was simply an unintentional slip of the tongue. One would assume that if such was the case, Biden would have by now offered an apology.

But there is no indication on the public record that he has since recognized the offensiveness of what he said and apologized or otherwise sought to make amends. Queries to Biden's spokesmen went unanswered yesterday.

So the question must be asked: Did Biden intend to offend millions of his countrymen who worship Jesus, one of whom happens to be his boss, or did he just not care if they were offended?

Either way, had Biden used the name Mohammed in this manner, Muslims would be crying foul. Quite possibly rioting in the streets, to boot. And if the vice president had used "gay" or "Black" as swear words, folks would be rightfully angry about that, too.

Hate speech is hate speech, whether it is aimed at Christians, Muslims, Gays, or African-Americans. Whether or not it should prosecuted or, as Thomas Jefferson argued, left undisturbed as a monument to tolerance and the strength of rational argument is a different issue. Here, it is sufficient to note that hate speech is speech meant to demean, ridicule, and discredit all who are associated with its target.

So where is the outrage about Biden's hate speech against Christians? We've not heard a peep of protest from the Southern Baptist Convention. Nothing from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Nothing from the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Nothing from the United Methodist Church.

And neither have we heard from Biden's boss, whose spokesman had other things to do yesterday than discuss another veep flap. Obama did have time last week to comment on the quality of law enforcement in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but his vice president's offensive language doesn't rate a public comment this week.

Some will say nobody is paying attention because, as John Nance Garner once ruefully observed of the office Biden now holds, it "ain't worth a warm bucket of spit." Others will say nobody pays attention to Biden any more because he's a gaffe machine and what do you expect.

What is more interesting here is the silence of American Christianity. Like the silence of the hound that caught Mr. Holmes' attention, this one signifies something far more serious at work in the American body politic.

Biden's uncorrected cursing is indicative of the slow strangling by the unrelenting forces of political correctness of the religious tolerance that is Christianity's greatest gift to America.

We've reached a point in which the nation's second highest official can without fear insult and degrade the name revered by millions of Americans, but woe unto him who says a word even remotely critical of the PC flavors of the day.

The silence of American Christianity on this issue is indicative of its failure to hold its own God in the reverence He (yes, feminists, HE) deserves.

Biden himself follows a long tradition of inappropriate language among the political elite - the comment of John Nance Garner you cited was the cleaned-up version, the original was much more of a barnyard nature. Biden's disrespect and ignorance of his own faith and that of others isn't news.

Richard Land, where are you?

If Biden had blasphemed against any religion other than Christianity, liberals would have been furiously accusing him of bigotry and insensitivity. This is just another example of the left's double standard.

To answer most of the (rhetorical) questions in this column, millions of people, including Americans and Christians, use the phrase "Jesus Christ" as an expletive. To call it hate speech is baiting at best - ignorant and narrow at worst. This article has less merit than many an 8th grade term paper; the only ones who agree are already emotionally committed against Biden, and would agree with you if you said his comments revealed him as a satanist.

It was sent to me as an example of very poor journalism. And so it is.

One should not intentionally attack the beliefs of others no matter how inane they might be to us, nor should we use language that is intentially inciting or provocative. That said, we as a society need more tolerance to others of different beliefs and cultures, not more hate. Religion is used by so many to divide and promote hate that it at times appears to be the culprit, not the misguided followers.

In one normal week, Biden makes more mistakes than Sarah Palin ever did. And Biden's daughter is a coke head. But...Biden supports the two sacraments of the secular elites - abortion and homosexuality, so that means he's a secular saint, while Sarah Palin is a troglodyte. I will be SO happy when the New York Times and Washington Post go out of business. The next step needed to restore America is a thorough house cleaning of the universities of professors who engage in hate speech against America. Think that can't be done? Title IX of the civil rights law sticks the feds hand DEEP into the universities just to make sure there's a women's baseball team. If we can do that, surely we can have a law to ensure intellectual fairness in the universities if they receive federal money. You want to know where to find leftists? Look to places where people don't work - the universities, schools, media.

Tapscott's hissy fit about Vice President Biden's use of the expletive "Jesus Christ" comes off as Puritan prudery. Biden is a practicing Catholic and the term he used is quite common among Americans across the religious spectrum. It is certainly not "hate speech". Further, church bodies have not reacted to the casual, private remark because they have more important things to be concerned about. If Tapscott is so thin-skinned as to be bothered by Biden's expletive, he should not watch some of the junk on HBO or he just might swoon. Jeez, Markie, why don't you just go home and play with your toys and leave grownups alone.

Most Christians are silent because most never heard it. This is the first I have.

Let's see, Biden is Catholic and Obama says he is Christian. Just saying you are when it's politically expedient doesn't make you one. He has never said Who he believes Jesus is and his actions (& fruits) indicate otherwise.

There are churches in this nation filled with unsaved people. Besides, it's PC to diss Christ and those who believe in all those "obscure verses"!

Or is it just that all of you are deeply insecure about your religion?

Wow, I didn't realize that you conservatives were so thin-skinned! You're always accusing liberals of being too politically correct, but Joe Biden uses a normal colloquial exclamation in American English, and you're trying to call it hate speech! Give me a break. It is so obvious from the context that the comment was not meant in any way to demean Christianity. You're trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Mark Tapscott, pull your self-righteous skull out of your religion's rear-end for a moment and evaluate what actually occurred. The Word of the Day has already been mentioned in the comments; it's "vernacular". I charge you with ruminating on how this word might apply to Biden's speech. I further charge you with immediately ceasing production of this manner of patronizing baloney.

Pragmatically, there should be no issue, because he obviously isn't in a context where actual blaspheme makes sense. Its cultural usage for marking and setting off an intensified statement is well established and should not be seen in any way as remarkable--other than in the way which others choose to purposefully interpret such linguistic bits as to align them with palsied political attacks.

Whereas, when the devil causes you to hit your hand with a hammer, it's quite clear you are damning your savior for failing to protect your delicate thumb from the intricate world plans of the Light Bringer.

It's just an expletive, and a mild one at that. You've never said an expletive? I find that hard to believe.

Relax. Jesus has thicker skin than you think. He can take it.

Many (Christians) have been against hate speech/hate crime laws that have been passed in various cities and states around the country. I for one would rather deal with what a person actually does to someone rather than what they say or think. Over the years, there have been many Christians who have been unfairly accused of hate speech in various media outlets over the years especially in regard to homosexual issues for a long time. Do we really want to pick up the same club we have been getting beat up with? I don't.

MikeH

Jul 29, 2009

Hate speech? I think not. It's certainly not bigotry. It's not even criticism.

But even if it were, while there's no rationally justifiable reason to speak out against race or sexual orientation, there are plenty of reasons to hold every single one (yes, including the 'religion of peace') of these fairy tales up to incisive critique and biting ridicule.

Black is a simple chemical state. Faith on the other hand is consciously chosen, weapons-grade idiocy. Credit where it's due Mr Tapscott, you make that point more eloquently than I could ever hope to do myself.

You're all missing the point here!

The VP should use a little "common sense" before speaking! Were Christians offended? I'm sure there were some. But the point Mark is making is that they haven't responded!

However, if the veep had uttered another deity's name as an expletive, or [gasp] used the "N" word, even uttered a "shi-" or "damn", the media, and the American public would have been all over it.

I personally didn't hear the remark. However, had I, my statement would have been, and is: Shame on you, Mr. Vice-President! Shame on you!

As for those of you who just don't get it, bicker among yourselves and America remains the same. Unchanged. A nation full of immoral and non-caring individuals who are self-centered and egotistical. The "Me" nation.

Jul 29, 2009

You think this is "hate speech"? Seriously?

Let's take a look at some real "hate speech" shall we?

"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." - Luke 14:26

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." - Matthew 10:34

"The silence of American Christianity on this issue is indicative of its failure to hold its own God in the reverence He (yes, feminists, HE) deserves." Gender exists in the natural world as a product of evolution, a way to mix up the gene pool so species will survive over millions of years. Oh, come on! Just because something offends you doesn't mean it's an attack upon you. If you think that using what you call blasphemous language amounts to hate speech, then you have no understanding of the term. Jews and Muslims don't consider restaurants serving pork intolerant or hateful, even when they advertise publicly. I didn't consider it a personal attack when you kept leaving your paper on my lawn - even though I didn't want it. The Bible tells us what God can do when he's angry, like at the moment of Jesus' death:

Does Mr. Biden really want to risk causing such a horror?

That's just bad manners; the purpose of manners being to be respectful of the feelings of others even when you don't know how they feel. People who have no manners are just barely above animal status, thinking only of themselves and demonstrating no impulse control despite their capacity to do otherwise. I think you'd hear more people upset about it if more people knew about it. This article is the first I have heard of his using the expletive.

This is a joke, right? I mean, Jesus Christ, is there a single Christian other than stuck up jerks who don't say "Jesus Christ"? Even my incredibly religious mother-in-law says, "God almighty!" Now if he had said, "Jesus F*ing Christ" maybe you would have a legitimate complaint.

I am surprised that this made it to print. Hate speech?! Against who? Is someone TRYING to be offended? Using this line of thought, I could be offended by Cheney's off-miked "-sshole" reference a few years back based on the fact that I have one.

Wow. The mind boggles at the inanity of this editorial. The best thing this article could possibly be used for (other than using the print version as lining at the bottom of the cage of a dyspeptic parrot) would be as an example of how NOT to write. The number of non sequiturs, strawmen arguments, and wholly unsupported assertions is staggering for such a short piece of pedantic whining. Truly it would take ages to tear this tripe apart to expose every flaw, there are that many.

I can only hope the fainting couch and smelling salts at chez Tapscott are holding up under this onslaught...

Mr Tapscott:
I believe your own efforts to write such a divisive editorial on the usage of the term "Jesus Christ" is probably as much "taking it in vain" as Mr Biden's slightly ill-thought-out remark. In fact I suppose it's worse, because for Biden it was a throw-away comment; for you, it's a carefully crafted exercise in trying to agitate and alienate, all in the name of Jesus Christ's name.

So whatever derision you expressed towards Biden: applies more so to yourself.

I don't believe in your god or anyone else's god, but I do know that the true adherents to such faiths espouse kindness, charity, forgiveness and tolerance. Characteristics you seem to be lacking in, if this editorial is anything to go by.

Hopefully you might stop and think about that before applying pen to paper in future.

Cheers.

1st of all, leaders are expected to do just that -- lead -- by exhibiting a higher level of behavior than expected of those they lead. Our VP (leaving his own spiritual convictions or practices out of it) should be REQUIRED to exhibit the same respect for other's revered beliefs that the White House tries to legislate regarding PC issues. If this were an unintentional slip of the tongue, there would have been a show of embarrassment & apology, or the "slip" would perhaps have been edited out of the interview. With none of the above happening, perhaps this is testing the passivity of "Christians" to find out just what they will tolerate or ignore. Speak out or watch out! we need to appreciate & exercise our religious freedoms & mutual respect.

Last Hussar

Jul 29, 2009

OK, let's imagine that the VP said 'Mohammed in Paradise' instead of 'Jesus Christ'. Now if the Editorial Page Editor of the Riyahd Examiner had written a near identical article as this, what would your reponse have been to that, Mr Tapscott? Would you agree that he was being abusive to Muslims?

If this is the story that you feel is important in today's world, may I suggest you make way for a better journalist?

The difference is that "Jesus Christ" is a standard, well known and well used phrase in western society, whereas "Mohammed in Paradise" is something you appear to have just made up.

I, for one, am somewhat comforted by the fact that the vice president speaks like a real person. I can't count the amount of times I've heard people say "Jesus Christ", or the amount of times I've said it myself. If you find it offensive, don't say it. You've no right to enforce your own beliefs about behaviour on others.

Incidentally, not everyone, nor almost everyone, uses curse words. Some people have attained a large enough vocabulary so they don't have to resort to "baby talk" in order to express themselves.
May you who have such hatred towards Jesus someday be able to think for yourselves - and not blindly believe what some closed-minded person may have told you - and find the peace and love which truly are gifts from the Almighty. Christianity gave us religious freedoms? That is simply not historically supported. A secular tradition of political philosophy as established by thinkers like Locke, Voltaire, and Montesquieu is what gave rise to the American Revolution. We owe our freedoms to the wise thoughts and brave actions of great men and women, not some silly system of superstition. Certainly, some of the first people to come to America were protestants seeking to hide from persecution; but our freedoms were established by men like Jefferson and Madison, who were many things before they were Christians. Really, Jefferson, Adams, Paine, and a number of the most important founding fathers of this great nation were deists, if they were anything. Franklin was some what alone in invoking his Puritan upbringing in the formation of his values, but no where did Christianity of its own volition conceive of the social contract, democracy and the separation of church and state.

Jul 31, 2009

Also, what a touchy supreme being you have! Do you really think he would need you to stand up for him? It makes the whole fairy tale seem even more pathetic when you write this silly garbage. Come on, he hasn't been able to get a word in on using his name in vain in several thousand years. He couldn't even keep an original copy of his 'word' around. What a useless deity. If he had any sense he would expect us not to believe in him, given how little he tries to prove himself. All I hear in the way of that is a bunch of humans sniveling and preforming mental aerobics, like accusing a good man of committing the crime of hate speech when he used a common English expletive. Jesus Christ! Get over it! Aren't there fetuses to defend and homosexuals to lynch somewhere?

Bill

Aug 3, 2009

This is especially silly since Jesus Christ is a fictional fairy tale character. No different from a Smurf or a Transformer.

Don't we have more important things to worry about in this country? People's LIVES are being RUINED!! The country is in turmoil. Our finances are in danger. We owe massive debt to China. We are financially over-extended while engaged in TWO WARS!!

And if China ever wants to collect, maybe they'll accept ownership of the country instead of payments on what we can never repay.

But instead of focusing on these destructive forces, you're opting to have thin skin and cry "hate speech." What happened to free speech?

The phrase in question has become an American colloquialism.

But let's take this a step further. I'm sure you're offended by Atheists and all of the non-Christians in the world. Why not plan on exterminating them so that their presence doesn't "offend" you? After all, their lack of belief in your god must be a blasphemy in and of itself!

I think the point that mark Tapscott was trying to make was that there exists a double standard in Washington. One where some people's slip of the tongue is punished with a media "tar and feathering" while others go over looked, depending on who the victim happens to be. its not about being "thin skinned" or judgmental it is simply and opinion column observing one instance of double standard

Sensible

Aug 11, 2009

There is not a double standard. Racism and sexism are wrong because there exist people of given sexes and races who are victimized by such speech. Seeing as Jesus Christ no longer exists, "using his name in vain" is no more wrong than cursing the "Xianfurians," a race which I have just constructed for myself. The only difference between using "Jesus's" name in vain and cursing to the "Giant Cookie Monster in the Sky" is that a large number of people happen to believe Jesus Christ is divine, and that the Giant Cookie Monster isn't. However, since the empirical evidence supporting claims of divinity for Jesus and the Cookie Monster are equal, it is irrational to condemn speech allegedly "blaspheming" them.

Independently, to claim that Biden's use of "Jesus Christ" is hate speech presumes that those words have inherent value; for the law to adopt this assumption is a violation of the separation of church and state.
