Mark Tapscott: Boycotts can work both ways, Wal-Mart

By: Mark Tapscott

Wal-Mart has joined a handful of craven corporations caving to demands from the radical Left that they withdraw their advertising from Glenn Beck's Fox News program to protest what the repressive zealots view as unacceptable speech by the controversial cable host.

Beck's critics are four political activists with an outfit called ColorofChange.org. They are outraged that Beck called President Obama a "racist" with "an abiding hatred of white people." Is Beck correct? I have no idea, but he has a right to voice his opinion, just as the four people with ColorofChange have a right to theirs.

But this quartet beating the drums for repression aren't satisfied just to publicize their disagreement with Beck, they also want to silence him because, they claim, he is trying "to convince the American public that President Obama's agenda is about serving the needs of Black communities at White people's expense."

Beck's views are, according to ColorofChange.org, "repulsive, divisive and shouldn't be on the air." Funny, I don't recall that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of expression to everybody except those whose opinions the four members of ColorofChange.og find "repulsive and divisive."

There is more to be said later in this space on ColorofChange. For the moment, the focus here is on Wal-Mart, which has joined Geico, Men's Warehouse, Proctor & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, Sargento, and a few others in pulling advertising from Fox that might have been slated to run during Beck's 5 pm slot.

Shareholders in these corporate monuments to brainless marketing will be interested to know that Beck's audience is bigger than those watching all of his competitors on MSNBC, CNN, CNBC and HLN combined. Don't be surprised if those same shareholders also wonder who should be served first - the millions of potential customers watching Beck or the Potemkin creation of a former MoveOn.org organizer and his three cohorts.

My guess is that many among Beck's viewers - and millions more people who have never watched his show - would be outraged to know these corporations are aiding and abetting a vicious, hypocritical campaign to slander him by an outfit apparently created for just such a purpose. Many of these viewers will also want to know what they can do to help Beck.

I have a suggestion for them - Boycott Wal-Mart. Remind these corporate cop-outs that politically inspired boycotts can go both ways, but the economic consequences are likely to be far more devastating to those who depend on consumers whose political views span the ideological spectrum.

Or, to put it more bluntly for the marketing geniuses in Wal-Mart's Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters, there are far more Americans who agree with Beck and/or simply love the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment than the anti-free speech comissars on the extreme fringe of the far Left who are trying to shut him up.

And, given the likely demographic overlap of Beck viewers and Wal-Mart shoppers, the monster Big Box store chain is the perfect target of a counter-boycott. Can you guess who is more likely to feel pain first - the cable news guy whose ratings are skyrocketing as Obama's plunge or Wal-Mart?

Being an ink-stained wretch from the chronically under-paid world of newspaper journalism, Wal-Mart has long been a regular stop for my family. Over the years, we've spent thousands and thousands of hard-earned dollars on everything from Ol Roy dog food to countless bags of mulch for the yard.

How many dollars will we be spending at Wal-Mart as long as Wal-Mart supports the Beck boycott? Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing.

Does Wal-Mart have low prices? Usually but the difference is never so great that we can't afford to check out stores like K-Mart, Target, and Costco. Who knows, we just might lose the Wal-Mart habit for good.

And in an age of viral marketing and Internet saturation, this column might even be the start of something that will make Mike Duke, Wal-Mart's new CEO and president, see his marketing department in a whole new light.

Along with 150 organizations we have supported a boycott vs Costco for the destruction of archeological sites, trees and art works in Mexico. Please help us www.frentecivico.org, and maketiaa-crefethical.org inform the world of the abuses by this transnational.
Best Wishes!,

How odd. The same people calling for the boycott of Beck are the same haters who attempt to block Wal-Mart development at every turn. Yet, the people who LISTEN to and APPRECIATE Beck are the same ones who actually shop at and support Wal-Mart.

Someone in Arkansas better pull their head out.

Exactly my point Jeff, but put far more succinctly than I.

Good article Mark and thanks for the compliment. This dichotomy raises its' head all the time, and I am always baffled. Another great example would be my inability to get a color guard from any branch of the military, boy scouts, vfw or veterans group to a distinctly non-partisan tea party event. These folks are bending over backwards to appease the people who HATE them, but won't give the time of day to those who actively support them. Up is down, and left is right thanks to the overoffensensitivity of political correctness run amuck. It's truly a sad state of affairs.

The boycott of Wal-Mart should be spread to GEICO, Men's Warehouse, Proctor and Gamble and Progressive Insurance. If a handful of black activists are able to convince the marketing divisions of these companies that they represent 150,000 'members,' when the actual numbers are far less than that, then the great majority of patriotic Americans should be able to convince them that they are losing millions of dollars in revenues because of this boycott of a conservative television talk show host. It's time the 'sleeping giant' called America woke up -- past time. let's do it now, and then join the Saturday, Sept. 12 March on Washington, led by Dick Armory, to protest Barack Obama's efforts to socialize America.

Why should we "lose the Wal-Mart habit for good"? For ordinary Americans, Wal-Mart is a godsend (and who cares about its leftwing critics, like Ehrenreich). Tapscott can afford to switch stores, but he's one of the affluent, effete New Class scribblers that abound in DC. Besides, if a corporation's business considerations dictate pulling out of a show or line of business, that's their prerogative.

I do not think the advertisement by the Citizens Coalition -- whatever that is -- should be included in this column. This is about the Administration of Barack Obama and a splinter Black Power Group that is attempting to shake down groups like Wal-Mart, GEICO and Proctor and Gamble, and for what purpose? It sounds like the same kind of economic power play and blackmail that the Black Panthers used against white and minority-owned businesses in the Watts area of Los Angeles in the 1960s, when I was a reporter for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and covered their activities. AMERICA, WAKE UP AND TAKE BACK YOUR COUNTRY!
As for boycotting COSTCO, this store is giving many, many Mexican citizens jobs and low prices, so why should they be boycotted for destroying a few artifacts which wouldn't even have been discovered had not progress come to that ancient land?

I suppose Glenn Beck has the right to spew his noxious nonsense on Fox News, but people also have the right to boycott companies that advertise on his silly show. By the way, I would not shop at Wal-Mart anyway because of its buying so much of its stuff from Third World sweatshops that mistreat employees, because it has pumped money into campaigns to hurt public education, and because of its reported mistreatment of its U.S. employees.

Pricebook

Aug 20, 2009

I agree that Walmart's prices are pretty good, but nothing special. If you create your own pricebook, you can find sub-Walmart prices pretty much anywhere. Even Giant, Safeway and Harris Teeter feature lower prices or many staples than Walmart. Shopping at Walmart is really more about habit than anything. Broaden your horizons, folks. That includes listening to talking heads other than Glenn Beck and his ilk.

Barely About Barack
Can't Beck disagree with the President's policies without calling him a racist that hates white people? While you're boycotting Walmart, maybe you could let Beck know that much of his audience doesn't appreciate his poorly supported charges of racism? Surely they don't think that the President hates white people? Why not make that clear? Kill two birds with one stone.

"Affluent, effete New Class scribblers"? Lanier, you get the prize for using what I am confident is the most spectacularly inaccurate label that has ever been flung at me in my career.

This racist Black Power organization is merely trying to intimidate these corporations...and it is working!

However, if we can get at least 60,000 folks to drop AARP I am sure we can get MUCH MUCH more than that to join with us and show these companies what a free market is all about.

These black HATE groups must be stood up to. Sharpton, Jackson, Van Jones and Changeofcolor are all about threats and intimidation. If you stand up to a bully, he/she will go away.

I believe this fake boycott will benefit Glenn in the end way more than it has hurt him.

Great article.

This may be lost on some of you, but Wal-Mart also has a whole lot of black customers, not to mention Hispanics.

Trust me, the retail giant looked at the relevant numbers before they made the decision on Beck, which I suspect was a rather easy one.

Besides, most of the advertisers who left the circus clown's show just moved their spots elsewhere on FoxNews.

But feel free to boycott away. It's your right as citizens.

Clarence, the AARP says it loses about 300,000 people a month. It said last month they gained 400,000. I doubt they're weeping over 60,000. It's a rather massive organization.

This entire diatribe is pointless; the constitution grants free speech, and everyone is using it. The system is working. Beck will have to find another sponsor, and that's it.

I have already dumped GEICO and I'm looking for an alternative to Progressive for my car insurance. As for Wal-Mart, I will start shopping at Kroger instead. I will no longer buy SC Johnson products either.

Mark, another insightful article that shows the hypocrisy of Left-leaning organizations like ColorofChange, MoveOn, etc.

I am on their email mailing list, and received an email to sign a petition to stop advertising on Glenn Beck. Instead, I utilized their online petition to show SUPPORT for Glenn Beck and Freedom of Speech, and reminded them of the same facts you pointed out -- his TV show ratings, radio show, and books are all popular, compared to the falling ratings and viewers of CNN, HLN, CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, etc who just seem to be mouthpieces for the Obama Administration rather than actual journalists paid to report the news.

There is strength in numbers, as we have seen with the AARP membership cancellations. These companies should think twice before pandering to narrow-minded organizations like these, because it will ultimately hurt their bottom line and enrage shareholders when their stock prices crash and burn.

Barely About Barack

Aug 20, 2009

So... boycott Walmart because they won't advertise on *ONE* Fox News show? What about the people boycotting Walmart for being anti-union, or just too big and corporate? Will they come back to Walmart now? This is madness. At some point, fickle consumer outrage will keep thousands away from Walmart, while another thousand will flock to Walmart in a fickle show of support. The net change in consumer traffic might be negligible, at best. Is this the dream of libertarian consumerists, where fiscally comfortable shopaholics with too many options avoid one store for simplistic reasons, and support other stores for even simpler reasons? Is this the end game, where people shop at one store, until they hear or see something they don't like, and want to shop somewhere else?

Boy, oh boy Mark. If your upset about Wal-Mart pulling their ads from Mr. Beck's program, you're going to be furious with what I have to tell you.

Mr. Beck's top sponsor, UPS, actually donates to ACORN. Who spilled the beans? Fox Buisness' "Happy Hour" Thursday afternoon. It's true, watch the tape.

Since Mr. Beck enjoys diagrams and conspiracy theories, maybe we can get one with ACORN connected to UPS connected to Glenn Beck. Could it be?

Seriously, you folks on the far right need to wake up to reality. These sponsors dropped a liability. Oh and please go picket Wal-Mart. They're killing wages.

Good one, Mark. Thank you. I believe I will boycott Wal-Mart. I won't have to step over the dirty diapers and used condoms that dot the parking lot of the nastiest place on earth. That shiny clean Target is a-callin'.

Since the advertising departments of these division believes the sensoship is their means of controlling any speach that might offend President Obama I will NOT be buying any of their products and/or shopping at their storesand will encourage all of my freinds to do the same.

You object to Glenn Beck expressing his opinion and want to shut up free speach I will exercise my free will and boycot your products and stores.

I am not a racist, my son-in-law is black and my grand-son is therefore bi-racial and I have embrassed my son-in-law into the family and my grandson is the apple of my eye son lets lay that to rest before you even start on that one. I can chose to not like policies and make my observations without skin color or race coming into my decisions.

Political rights vs. Irresponsible hyperbole

Aug 24, 2009

No one is saying that Beck should be thrown in jail for having a bad opinion. He has every right to voice his opinion, and everyone agrees to that. But he is on the air because people pay him to be there. If people believe his opinions to be irresponsible and damaging to the country as a whole, it certainly makes sense that they would withdraw the financial support that enables that voice to be heard so far and wide. Beck is a Fox News product, selling himself and his ideas. Choosing not to buy them is perfectly within the rights of everyone -- and it is obviously far from any sort of enforced "silencing". They are not "shutting up free speech". They are encouraging others to NOT buy the product he sells.

Furthermore, is this even about free speech?

Aug 24, 2009

I strongly suggest that everyone consider the possibility that giving such power (i.e., such a large audience) to divisive, unsupported throwaway accusations of racism like this is bad for America. The government has never come up in this debate, and so this isn't about free speech. This is about whether individual Americans ought to be actively supporting someone who does things like call his opponents racists and Nazis without having clear reason for doing so. This is what Beck has done during this debate.

My policy with progressive is in process of being canceled and replaced with a better company. Wal-mart doesn't exist to me, I will see an empty building when I ride by. I see these business as a negative examples for HONEST VALUES for our country and my family. And for the racist tilt to this, call me what you want. It's like the old saying," sticks and stones may brake my bones but words will NEVER hurt me.
