Newt Gingrich: Cap-and-Trade is another way of saying 2+2=5

By: Newt Gingrich
Examiner Columnist
June 26, 2009

The Obama White House has spent the week furiously working to convince its fellow Democrats in Congress to support the global warming bill that's before the House today. Former Vice President Al Gore has been working the phones, and there was even a luau at the White House last night.

The question that must be asked, however, is why? If the case is closed on man's role in causing climate change, as the left assure us that it is, then why the need to twist Democratic arms to do something about it?

My guess is it has something to do with 2+2=4.

This simple arithmetic - 2+2=4 - was a rallying cry during the Polish Solidarity freedom movement in the 1980s. It meant that, even though the government would try to tell the people that 2+2=5, to be free, the people had to tell the truth, that 2+2=4. Because to deny the truth was to deny reality, and to do that was to surrender freedom to the government.

Something similar is happening with the global warming bill.

The sponsors of the global warming bill, which is known as Waxman-Markey, are telling Americans that not only will the legislation save us from calamitous climate change, it will also produce new jobs and new prosperity by transitioning America to new forms of "green" energy.

In other words, under Waxman-Markey, there's no trade-off necessary to save the planet; no price to be paid. It's a win-win-win.

Right. And 2+2=5.

The reality is that the bill before the House today imposes what could be the largest tax increase in history on the American people. And every single one of us who heats a home, drives a car, and manufactures or consumes products made in America will pay the price.

Estimates are that the Waxman-Markey bill will raise electricity prices by an astounding 90 percent. It will raise gasoline prices by 74 percent. It will raise the average American family's energy bill by $1,500 each year.

And, far from creating jobs, experts predict that the global warming bill will destroy 1,105,000 jobs on average each year, with peak years seeing unemployment rise by over 2,479,000 jobs.

All in all, the bill is expected to reduce our gross domestic production (GDP) by $9.6 trillion. And for what?

Even if - if - the legislation works exactly as it is intended (a rare feat in Washington), in about 100 years the Earth's temperature will be one tenth of one degree Celsius lower than the United Nations predicts it will otherwise be.

The largest tax increase in history for a one-tenth of one degree temperature decline? No wonder the Obama Administration is working overtime on Capitol Hill.

The bill's sponsors are also assuring us that if America unilaterally imposes these new energy costs on itself, countries like China and India will be convinced to do the same by the overwhelming power of our example.

This is another 2+2=5 message. The American people know that the authoritarians who rule China won't be shamed into harming their own economy by the United States doing so first. It doesn't matter how many times Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi repeat it.

I'm a conservative who deeply believes we have a moral, economic and patriotic duty to protect our environment. I've written a book about green conservatism. I've even appeared in a commercial about the environment with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

But I don't believe we can protect our environment with job-killing higher taxes and growth-stifling government regulation.

Innovation and incentives have made America great. They are what will keep us great and protect our environment.

But instead of rewarding innovation, this bill punishes Americans into living lives that the government wants them to live. Instead of recognizing that our energy problems are the result of politician who won't let us develop domestic sources of energy, this bill punishes Americans for the faults of politicians and bureaucrats.

Instead of opening up America's vast resources of oil, natural gas, and coal, this bill guarantees that American will remain reliant on foreign dictators if we want to continue to drive cars, heat our homes and run our appliances.

I believe in protecting our environment. I just don't believe that 2+2=5. Neither, I suspect, do my fellow Americans whose representatives are voting on Capitol Hill today.

I'm for stopping cap and trade but I need some hard facts. Where the hell can I find support for Newt's numbers?

The real tragedy here is the Obama crew preying on the ignorance of the American people, again. We have allowed the education system to be watered down and have wound up with a population that cannot critically evaluate issues, specifically scientific ones. May God help us.

I have called my congressman and my senators. It is as if they could care less. I have no delusions that they will vote against this. It makes me very sad, that the government that was supposed to represent its people clearly does not. I don't know what else to do. I know that no one in Upstate NY wants, or can afford higher taxes, yet we are at the mercy of the Democrat left that insists on taxing us to the poor house!

Meritas, you can look for information at www.askheritage.org, they have researched all of what the Obama administration is trying to ram down our throats and it's all factual. Also, read Liberty and Tyranny a Conservative Manifesto by Mark Levin, it is very well researched and everything he talks about is backed up with facts. Also, the fact that the industries Obama is targeting are the ones that spend the most money developing and discovering alternative energy sources debunks the claims that this tax will create more jobs. When these industries are cutting jobs and losing profits they won't be spending to develop alternative energy. No one is confronting Obama or the congress with this question and it is infuriating.

This is madness! Having watched the mfg base shrink so much in the last 10-15 years is dramatic. The small towns that circled around the local mfg plant in the past, are now either in a position of moving to work or just becoming government dependents. The EPA and Govt has a role in protecting the environment, but there has to be some common sense to their regulations. Without out Manufacturing we are left open to a continuing higher unemployment rate from which we will not recover, while our money continually flows to the countries that we are forced to buy from. We will know when we are done, the terrorist will no longer be interested in attacking us. Our current legislators and president are speeding up this process.

With all of the really frightening events developing which could actually pose an existential threat to Western civilization, the appetite the Democrats at all levels of government have for taxing the wealth & job creating citizens of our country has become truly appalling!!They have disguised their intentions by changing from "leftists & socialists" to "Progressives".They have changed the word "taxes" to "investments".They seem to know that by the time America wakes up to these tactics, it will be too late!Americans are becoming too preoccupied with entertainment (look at the news coverage of Michael Jackson)and are not paying close attention and that's why Democrats and the White House are in such a hurry to acquire this enormous taxing authority!I hope your messages will help to alert enough citizens to bring this to a halt!

It almost reminds me of what a Reverend Martin Niemoller in Germany said; "In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist; And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist; And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew; And then... they came for me... And by that time there was no one left to speak up." very frightening indeed.

How are we going to compete globally if we are paying so much for this tax along with all the other taxes and insurance we pay for. I am a small business owner producing furniture and it is extremely difficult now, without more taxes. We might as well move to China and get it over with.

Yes, please call your representatives to let your informed opinion be known because the American people will suffer even more for a very long time if they believe the lies and allow this bill to be passed. But we have another power at our disposal and that is our prayers. God listens to the prayers of the faithful who are in need of dire help. We the American people are in dire need right now to save our nation from this fascism being thrust upon us, So Call and pray, and remind our public "servants" that that is what they are and that 2=2=4, not 5.

They call it cap and trade so as not to get our attention. The big money we spend does not cool the earth. It warms the accounts of George Soros, Al Gore and other fat cats. Pure and simple. Oh, that's right, Soros is controlling the media too!

How can we possibly impose term limits on those in D. C. in order to take the politics out of the decision makiing? If all of the elected officials were limited to one term, maybe then decisions would be made based on right and truth, which does not need balance. They would never spend one day in office running for re-election. We live in the greatest most powerful nation that ever existed on the face of the earth and yet compared to other countries that have been in existance for thousands of years, we are in our infancy. How could that be? I believe the reason is our individual freedom and we are losing that. I believe we have a cancer that is eating away at the very foundation this great country was built on and it is in washington D. C. The only cure that I can see is term limits. Where is the outrage? Is it possible to start a movement to fix this before it is too late?

Every day I am sickened about what this adminisration is doing to our country. Yes, they have bought votes all right, and it is clear they use them, which is NOT fair. I can't not stand the way they are bulldozing through all these important issues, because they can, which is NOT fair. I can't stand how low they will stoop to destroy anyone who stands in their way, which is NOT fair. These are NOT honorable people, no matter what their views. I can't look or listen to this President for all I see is deception and lies. Writing congressmen is not enough!! Mr. Speaker what do we do now to stop this bulldozing, destructive, deceptive administration??? PLEASE run for President and please let me know we can do to stop this chaos. Thank You for standing up and thanks for letting me vent. Sincerely, Kathy Widner

It's all about CONTROL. Socialists will take money from the "rich" and give it to the "poor" to offset the increase in energy costs. There are more "poor" than "rich". The "poor" will gratefully vote for the socialists who have saved them from both high energy costs AND global warming. The socialists will increase their control.

Jun 26, 2009

There are new studies that identify a serious error in all those unproven "global warming" computer programs. Remember, GIGO, Garbage In, Garbage Out is still a truism. The garbage in those programs, that portend to predict Earth's temperature a hundred years ahead, makes them obsolete because they all assume that clouds create "positive feedback" (i.e., if CO2 causes temperatures to rise a trifle -- and yes, there is a trifling effect) the clouds will GREATLY AMPLIFY SUCH TINY INCREASE, a/k/a Positive Feedback. But this concept is totally obsolete, as new studies show that clouds have JUST THE OPPOSITE EFFECT. They introduce NEGATIVE FEEDBACK, creating a cooling effect. Typically, Government is three years behind the curve and lost in the clouds.

To Riley Banjo, I believe the CAP stands for there being a cap (or limit) on the amount of CO2 that our nation's industry emits. Everyone will supposedly be given an "allowance" for the Co2 they are allowed to emit. For those that emit less, they can Trade/ Sell their allowances to those who emit more than their allowance. With all that said, this is nothing more than a power grab of the Left to allow government to control industry and our way of life. Remember that Mikhail Gorbachev became an environmentalist as soon as the Soviet Union collapsed. I agree with an earlier poster who said it is time to get angry and in their face as the left has done for years.

I feel the wind has been taken out of my sail... our country is being taken from us and I feel so helpless. It is all happening so fast and right before our eyes... it's frightening. Well, our "chosen representatives" in Congress, have sold out those they are supposed to represent, the people of the U.S.A., by House Members voting in favor of the largest tax, ever to be assessed on the American citizen. If our Senate members, follow suit, a family of four will be taxed an aversge of $4000. per year, for the next 26 years, (and our electrict bills will be increased by 90%, within the next 25 yrs., or by 2035. If the American people allow these "traitors" to remain in the "House of Reps". after the next election, then it is yhe people, who are crazy, isatead of the polititions. Without seemed to "beg" the Senate to kill this bill, I hereby "implore" them to "save" the people of this country, by voting down"Cap&Trade"ie,The "Waxman-Marky" bill. I am a combat vet. of WW II, and it grieves me to see our country succomb, to "Socialism" and "Wealth Re-distribution", provided by our elected represenatives. It's sickening!

I just picked up a recent issue of Field and Stream magazine which I have not read for years and find one of the lead articles castigating the past Republican administration for opening up public lands to destruction by commerce. I would think that the average reader of this outdoor magazine cannot afford guided hunting trips to far away places and has an animus against the leasing of local big Timber Business owned lands to private hunt clubs. This is certainly the case in the Louisiana/Mississippi area where I live. Be aware Mr Gingrich thatwe "gun totin Bible thumping" folks although outraged by Mr Obama's famous characterization are even more personally affected by big business. If Repubs are to score points with us country folk they need to sound more like Theodore Roosevelt than any one out there, including yourself seems to be sounding at this point. I hope you can.

For those of you who live in the Orlando Florida area please read on.... In spite of you and me and thousands of citizens melting the phones in Washington yesterday, the House of Representatives chose Cap and Trade over the will of the American people. The nationwide Tea Party Movement has put out the call to engage in a nationwide protest of our disenfranchisement today at 12 noon at federal buildings or wherever we can get our point across. This is a late notice, but if you are interested in protesting this recent slap in our collective face, please join us at a conference a call at 10:00am to discuss particular details about the protest We are planning for downtown Orlando at 12 noon. We will meet at the northeast corner (Panera Bread) of Lake Eola. Conference Call: 10:00am Dial 1-218-339-2626 Access Code 390119

Anyone that voted for the self-proclaimed "messiah" aka Obama, are getting exactly what they deserve. Unfortunately, the rest of us are "getting it" with them. There's a lot to be said for doing research.

Heaven help the USA. These politicians have brainwashed a large segment of our society. I wish we could split the land and let those who want to live in the nanny state can be free to do so.

Do you not know the number of the bill? Why don't you ever refer to it by number? I get tired of searching my House of Representatives web site for an un-numbered bill.

The environmentalist want to "save the forests" but they want to get rid of co2 (what trees/plants feed on!) so which is more important? The term "greenhouse" should give us a clue...duh, plants grow well in that environment...and not always so good outside in the "fresh air". Something to ponder...wonder if the "inside the beltway" crowd ever thinks about that?

BILL PASSED THE HOUSE. TIME WILL TELL.

What is Obama's rush? First the huge stimulus bill that we're all stuck paying for; without having been read through by our politicians before voting! On top of that, the health plan that will have a negative effect on us, and now this Cap and Trade Bill! Our nation is in financial pain and Obama is pushing for another drain on our wallets! It appears that our President wants to put the government in full control; reducing the citizens' power by placing us in a position of total dependence on the government! Then what was once a great country will come under the control of dictatorial leaders! At that point, we won't be able to say, "God Bless America" anymore either; as by all appearance, that is criticized by many of the liberals.

As with most things, this whole Cap and Trade bill has to be about money. Obviously, someone (even if it is the government) stands to gain monetarily from the bill. The global climate change has always been a smokescreen. Follow the money. If you find out who will benefit, then you will find out who is behind it. Al Gore has made millions from this environmental championing (although he does not suscribe personally to any "green technology") but has made a mint with the movement. Who else stands to gain?

Newt: Thank you so much for taking the lead for conservatives on this one. You have educated the public and encouraged efforts that really may stop this bill. Thank you!!

I listened to talk radio Friday trying to rally the people to get their represenatives to vote no and said to myself, when has logic ever worked with these jokers? They have long been bought and paid for by those K Street lobbists. Maybe its time for the American people to see what a little Marxism feels like. We've grown fat and happy the last 50 years not worrying about our future. Being on top can do that to you. Well we are in a massive downslide. The left has the votes on virtually every issue of consequence and they will claim bi-partisanism on every vote that they get even one Republican to side with them. Most folks will reel when they see their electric bill go from $400 a month in the summer to $650. Many a F-250 driver will reel when they see that it takes nearly $200 to fill that tank on Sunday, knowing it will have to be filled again Wednesday evening. I think its time for all of us to read the Preamble to the Constitution and take appropriate action.

Dear Speaker Newt, I have no doubt about the results of this bill as you have laid them out. On the otherhand It is not over yet. We need to stop it from passing the senate. I discuss politics with whom ever will listen. Most people don't know what cap and trade is. Most people also get their news from the questionable sources of the main stream media. I can only tell so many people. If we don't educate people on what this bill will do to our country we will lose the senate fight as well. Their should be numerous direct mailings with this information. There should be more ads on FM radio as well. This congress and president are aware of the destruction they will inflict on our nation. We need to make public where Pelosi, Reed, Gore, and the rest are invested. What does their port-folio look like. For that matter how are all of them investing. If more people knew, perhaps this wake them up

POSTED Jun 26, 2009 This posted inquiry is definitely the key question, if we are to support Newt - where do we go for the validation needed? --- meritas: "I'm for stopping cap and trade but I need some hard facts. Where the hell can I find support for Newt's numbers?"

What are you suggesting to do to try to get the senate to refute this bill. I have already encouraged friends and acquaintances to call or email their senators and representatives. I hope you are encouraging the Republicans to be more proactive with the general public.

They should have changed the name of the bill to Cap on trade, because it will cause our manufacturerers cost to go up so dramatically they may not be able to compete with foreign competitors who do not have to live up to these specifications., all over a lie? Everyu who voted for this is a traitor to the Americans they represent.

Dear Mother of the future, You asked Newt to come up with a better solution, correct? A better solution for what?... A solution is only needed if a problem exists. Global warming is still an issue that needs discussion and debate based on facts and educated calculations; not a liberally biased agenda by one party. Global warming is still an open issue. Why are even wasting time and resources on this right now when we have so many REAL issues to address? You need to better educate youself and your family on this topic for your own good and the good of your children.

Friends! We do not, yet, need pitchforks, knives nor guns. We--as currently Free and Freedom-loving Americans--can VOTE. Being a conservative I claim there are at least eight (8) Republicans (RINOs)that must not be re-elected due to their efforts to cause passage of H-2454 Cap and Tax. The Senate will be taking up their version of H-2454 within the next several months. Inundate your senator will calls and emails; have your friends, relatives, ex-spouses and any deceased ACORN constituents you can arouse, to defeat the Senate efforts, including any future efforts to pass liberal/socialstic legislation .

Ladies and Gentlemen (those wanting term limits): Hear Ye, Hear Ye! We HAVE term limits. It occurs every TWO YEARS, the first Tuesday in November (even numbered years). Representatives are term-limited to two (2) years, Senators are term-limited to six (6) years, and POTUS's are term-limited every four (4) years for a two-term maximum. The only criteria you, as voters, have is to be educated about the individual you vote for. WARNING: Do not rely on ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, PBS nor WashPo for your political education--it will be deminted!

Do they think we are all idiots? Evidently. I think they have lost their minds. I believe that we should do what we can to protect our environment BUT there are some things that we cannot do. I believe that God is in charge of the temperature as well as a lot of other things. This bill will only hurt everyone who is not rich.
