Newt Gingrich: Go to a Townhall meeting

By: Newt Gingrich
Examiner Columnist
August 7, 2009

Two-hundred and eleven years ago, the party in the White House grew frustrated with public opposition to its policies and passed a law designed to stifle dissent.

The Alien and Sedition Acts made it a crime to "print, utter, or publish .. any false, scandalous and malicious writing against the federal government, including the President."

The law was the reigning Federalist Party's attempt to beat back an ascendant Democratic-Republican Party led by Thomas Jefferson in 1798. It backfired. An outraged American public elected Jefferson president in 1800.

No record survives as to whether the Jeffersonian protestors were well-dressed or not, but something frighteningly similar is happening today.

For the first time in a long time, the President of the United States is actively trying to suppress public involvement in civic life.

Americans have an absolute right to petition our government and express dissent. It's right there in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievancesÓ (emphasis added).

President Obama knows this. After all, his background is in "community organizing," which at least sounds like it is about encouraging people to become more involved in self-government. In the campaign, candidate Obama promised the most open and transparent government in history.

The problem is that President Obama now has a product - so-called health care reform - that is so unpopular he and his allies are being forced to quash dissent, demonize political opponents and even compile "enemies lists" just to get it passed.

White House and Democratic Party functionaries have called the concerned citizens turning up at town hall meetings to question the wisdom of President Obama's health care plans "the mob," "extremists" and the hapless pawns of insurance companies. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused dissenters of coming to town halls "carrying swastikas."

And in a move clearly aimed to stifle the dissent of opponents of its health care plan, the White House issued a call this week for Americans to turn-in critics of the plan. Any "disinformation" being spread around on the internet "that seems fishy," the White House advised, should be sent immediately to a special White House email account.

The Examiner's Byron York reported that the end result of this call for Americans to inform on their fellow citizens could be "a White House database of political opponents that will be both secret and permanent."

The politics of hope and change have been replaced by the politics of fear and intimidation.

The problem for the White House is, it won't work.

No amount of partisan name-calling is going to make the President's health care plan any more popular. And no matter how many times the White House calls it "astro-turfing," the contentious town halls members of Congress are having back in their districts are authentic expressions of grassroots frustration and concern.

So if your member of Congress is conscientious enough - or brave enough - to schedule a town hall meeting this August break, make sure you attend it.

Be pleasant. Be positive. Stick to the facts. But be firm and un-intimidated.

And if your member of Congress is too frightened to face the public back home, make sure you call and let him or her know you expect more.

Remember: Stifling dissent and likening those who disagree with you to Nazis are not the hallmarks of a confident agenda for change; they are the tactics of desperate and losing campaign. Just ask the Federalists.

And remember this as well:

You have an absolute right to petition your government. Exercise it.

Newt, you fat faced liar. You and your party are so stupid and even more irrelevant. Lies have a way of catching up to ya later, just as they did when you were lying and cheating on your wife. In closing I just want to say, Republicans are "STILL STUCK ON STUPID"!!

Tracy, I can only judge you from your above statement. You appear to be very evil person given to pointless rants and ad hominem attacks having no place in legitimate public discourse.

Prove me wrong by offering a reasoned reply to Mr, Gingrich's essay.

I can always count on Newt to provide historical perspective to a current situation. No one wants this health care program, I lived in Europe 6 years where going to the doctor was like lining up at a deli counter with your number in hand.

Our US Rep. (Cardoza R-CA)says NO townhall for our town! So, any and all out there - if you are given the opportunity - go! Attend for those of us without a voice!

Lloyd Doggett came to Austin and was run out on a rail. He didn't acknowledge the attendees at his constituents, left early since he had ZERO supporters in attendance, and said the next day in a TV interview that he was even more resolved to vote For this legislation despite the fact that he hasn't read it and the people he "represents" do not want it. Fortunately we have a good Republican challenger for him this term and we hope to get him elected (in spite of the local party and ACORN's rampant voter fraud agenda.)

I only hope enough americans organize in their communities to unite and fight back against this very real seizure of american citizens health choices. I don't believe the Town Halls will be effective on their own as they will be manipulated by congress people who are too smug or unwilling to hear the truth about this abomination of a bill. Our Congressman ironically just had heart surgery, thank god it went well. He of course being a congressman has his choice of 287 private health insurance plans paid for by U.S Taxpayers. You can be sure he won't be switching to Obama's Socialized Plan. They have a Monarchy going on here. Read every bill they try to pass, Don't allow them to live a life that is above what they allow us. Enough is enough. Wake up people. This must be stopped!

I believe Obama is breaking several laws with new website to send info on fishy health insurance claims. He is a community organizer, now he organizing his thugs to beat people up. Lets send him back to Chicago, we need a real man as president, not someone with no backbone. His ego can't take it, no one wants that insurance. He should be investigated and indicted for this.

I would take Biden over Obama since we are stuck with a dem.

My rep is having nothing in this entire district in MA. I live in district with Ed Markey. He has a lot of cities to cover, not one Town Hall at all. I called last week and they weren't sure, would keep me posted, I called this Wed and now it is none. Do you think they are afraid? I do. I have John Kerry & Ted Kennedy as sens. Ted's office always sends a response, his opinion. Last week I was very angry and worked up. I called the blue dogs too and Kerry's twice. First to tell him how against I am of govt health care then asked if they wanted my name, zip code was enough. Called later and left angry message on VM telling him he is not above me, he should respond, he works for us, we pay his salary etc. Apparently he's got dem talking points, I got four of same emails from him today. I have never had a response from him. He was reelected last year, so he is in no real danger of being out of job in near future.

I do believe that we need to vote for new people to go to congress. That means no incumbants are reelected. Possibly we can have some control that way.
If Obummer's plan is so good why are non of the federal employees, administration, staff and the whole congress and staff enrolled? You will not see them in the "plan" as they would have to take a number and stand in line with you (if they didn't die first).

My Demo Rep is Heath Shuler. He's not having any Town Hall Meetings either. And he's a so-called Blue Dog. More like a Lap Dog...over 80 percent of his votes have been in support of Queen Nancy, including Cap'n Tax. If he votes for ObamaCare his DC days will end in Nov 2010.

I am extremely disappointed in the tone of your commentary Mr. Gingrich. You completely ignore the fact that the issue with these town halls is that people who oppose health care reform are coming to them with the express purpose of preventing any dialogue from taking place at all. They are shouting down others, screaming at people, intimidating people, forcing events to shut down, denying everyone their right to free speech. No one is talking about denying anyone the right to express their opinion, we're talking about doing it in a civil manner. Amd this "enemies list" nonsense is ridiculous. You know quite well they are simply trying to stay on top of the issues being raised so they can respond to them, something every political operation does, including your own. Please don't insult our intelligence. I had thought you were interested in constructive political dialogue, but after a column like this, well, I guess you do belong with Sarah and Rush.

Here in SW Washington, our Congressman, Democrat Brian Baird, calls himself the "King of Town halls". However, he boasts 6000 people attended his town hall last week, which turned out he switched his "in person" town hall to a "phone in" town hall where he could pick the callers. On MSNBC, he recently compared opposition to this health care bill to "what drove Timothy McVeigh to bomb the federal building" - here's the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k9P0N1bSgo SW Washington Voters: He's a disgrace to our community, and let's vote him out in 2010! We need real representation in Congress.

Fact: The present Democratic Congress began work in January of 2007.

Fact: The recession began 6 months later.

Fact: The only federal budget surpluses happened during a Republican Congress 1998-2001.

Fact: People like Tracy are exactly the type of people who are responsible for ushering into power the most corrupt, destructive, and un-American Congress and President in American history. Be on your guard for people like him at town hall meetings...they are dangerous and may be armed.

I attended a Town Hall in Houston yesterday with over 600 people in attendance. There was no shouting or intimidation--just honest people trying to heard. There were about 500 of us in Austin today at a Rally--Very civil. Just dissenting which is our right. We must put an end to this crazy, out-of-control Congress and Socialistic president who has no business leading or, I shouls say trying to lead our Country. Show Up, Be Loud and Don't Stop NoW!

Newt has shown how the age old saying, those who do not learn from the past are destined to repeat their mistakes. We have been down this road a number of times in our nation's history, and every time we have managed to survive in a new era of change and opportunity.

This corrupted Administration has pulled out all the stops to crush any voices of the opposition against their power-grab to control our everyday lives.

Get educated about Obama and you will be very fearful about the path he has chosen to steer our country down.

HR 3200 will change our lives in disturbing ways by providing the Federal government absolute power over our lives from cradle to grave! We need to voice our protests loud and clear to avoid this government destroying what civil liberties we have left.

Vote REAL CHANGE in 2010 -- We the people!

HEY MIDDLE AMERICA

since barryboo has deemed list making legal it's time to start compiling lists of traitors and such...every patriotic american should start to compile a list of "fishy" people and their habits...where they work...their families...if they hold meetings...if they threaten or intimidate other people...pictures of them...pictures of their cars...pictures of their visitors... every patriotic american should have 1 "fishy" person completely covered and maybe several others with the basics compiled...do not put this info on any computer...write it on paper and keep it hidden...when the time comes there will be several secure websites to upload this to...and by when the time comes i mean if and when it becomes apparent that the loons are preparing for wide spread violence...by then it might be too late to compile stats so start now...if nothing happens then burn the paper...if the left starts violent actions then we will need this info to counter attack...

Tracy, do you have a reasoned defense of Socialist Health Care? Name calling is quite childish, but typical of socialists because their "philosophy" doesn't stand up to logical analysis. American Capitalism has empowered more common people than any other system yet devised.

Independent

Aug 10, 2009

"Be pleasant. Be positive. Stick to the facts. But be firm and un-intimidated."

I don't see this happening, Newt.

As an Independent who has voted equally for both parties..and as part of the demographic BOTH parties need in 2010 & 2012 to succeed, I have to say I'm disappointed by what passes for democratic participation and discourse lately.

I have health care provided through my profession: however, I know people who have lost *everything* with the current system. The majority of Americans believe our health care system needs revision. Yelling at each other, bullying, shouting names like elementary school bullies accomplishes NOTHING and only drives people like me away.

Democrats and Republicans: GROW UP.

Engage each other, discuss specific solutions: H E L P our country.

Thanks for trying to civilize the debate, Newt, but frankly, you need to do more. What passes for leadership now is pathetic.

Eric Robinson

Aug 10, 2009

It's hysterical, that the Obamob is comparing dissenters to Nazis, when it is they who have been taking-over major industries, attempting to control the media, and attempting to put everyone into a national health care system that would literally control your health, or life. Next, they'll want implants, to "make health records available to "the system".

RonD

Aug 10, 2009

This is even more of a reminder of Wilson's Progressives and the Sedition Act of 1918. Why have debate when you can label all of your opponents as Nazis, knuckle-draggers, or corporate shills. The Republic requires reasoned and thoughtful debate to function—not just political statements and angry shouts. We all need to write letters and emails to our elected officials stating our questions, concerns and positions.

I read through the comments and found most be thoughtful. That said I found a couple offensive and one in particular an example of screaming in the mirror. The first comments from "Tracy" showed a near complete lack of brain fuinction and remineds me of a quote from Winston Churchill: "If you are 20 and not a Liberal you have no heart, if you are 40 and not a conservative you have no brain..." Tracy is missing something. The Obama No-Health Plan will bankrupt our country and is based on the concept of eugenics...

Thank you Newt for bringing this debate back to our forefathers time - and what the USA stands for. We are a nation that stands against oppression by the government, by the pope, and for freedom, democracy, and free market. It is not the governments duty to care for our every need - nor is healthcare a 'right'. The current powers in DC have no connection to the purpose and values of america - they just don't get it - I vow to take up your challenge and go to as many town hall meetings as I can - and to petition as many representatives as well. Lets get rid of this plague and remove this cancer from our country

In reading all the responses, it is easy to tell the L from the R. Well, I have contacted my representatives many times and only receive requests for funds for their re-election. That says it all for all the Remocrats and Depublicans. They want to be in power and not necessarily hear us. That is why the anger is growing in American citizens who care about the country and not politics. Our system is in dire need of new representation for the folks and not for their power or special interest financial support. The drug companies are spending $150 million in coming months in favor of this health care reform. What could possibly be their motive? Sell more drugs seems to come to mind. Wake up Americans before it is to late to have proper representation. I am fed up too.

Hopefully there’s are groups of people out there actively preparing for the impending disaster that is currently bearing down on this nations in the guise of Healthcare and other, so called, “Social” reforms. With even the best efforts of all like minded peoples, we just may not be able to turn this hurricane from our shores. Someone had better start working a plan right now on the means and methodologies required to repair the economic, social, and philosophic damages incurred. I’m beyond survivalist measures here, I’m speaking of clean-up and reconstruct after the disaster.
