Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich debuts in Friday’s edition of The Examiner as a weekly political commentator, writing a broadly focused column on national and international politics, public figures and current issues.

“Mention Newt Gingrich and people instantly think of the Contract with America in 1994 that propelled the Republican Party to gain majorities in the House and Senate for the first time in 40 years,” said Ryan McKibben, president of Clarity Media, which publishes the Examiner.

“That history alone makes him one of the crucial figures of modern American politics, but he’s also one of a rare breed - the genuinely original and creative thinkers about politics and public policy,” McKibben said.

Gingrich is also a Fox News political analyst, a best-selling historian and author, a much-sought-after speaker, and a successful businessman. He is also active in the think tank world, serving as founder of the Center for Health Transformation, chairman of American Solutions, and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

“I am excited and pleased to be joining The Examiner, which is among the bright new stars of American journalism,” Gingrich said. “This is one of the most unique and crucial eras in our nation’s history and to know what’s going on, you have to be reading this newspaper.”

Gingrich’s column will appear on Fridays in both the print and online editions of The Washington Examiner and the San Francisco Examiner.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich has more policy ideas in a ten minute span than the rest of our current Washington-based politicians combined. I look forward to seeing him on FOX and I am looking forward to reading his commentary, thanks for bringing him on board.

Another Republican blowhard that gets more credit than he deserves. Where is the new blood and new ideas.

I am a Viet Nam vet and was a long time republican. But I left the party and reregistered after the Iraq atrocity called "Shock and Awe". I just wish we had someone as strong as Gingrich in either either congressional leadership or the presidency. However, his political views today are disgusting to me.

If Bush's looney tribunals were able to fully clear these men - which they did - then the least we can do is give them a fresh start. We screwed up 17 times in a row and the last administration didn't have the cojones to stand up to China. These men are welcome anytime in my neighborhood. And I hope some bright lawyer sues Mr. Gingrich for libel. There is no legal category "Terrorist Detainee." Playing cutsie word games with people's lives does not impress this reader.

Many fans of Mr. Gingrich are quick to point to his " sharp intellect and new ideas...", frankly, I see and hear a man whose perspective is usually political rather than intellectual about most things in the U.S. and the world. He can be a strident and aggressive ideologue, which usually just reinforces the deep polarization amongst politicians and the American citizen. While Newt may "score points"for himself or his party, he is certainly not bringing us any closer to the real solutions our daunting times require. He may be a great "Pol" but, Newt is definitely No statesman.
