Obama's Honeymoon May be Shorter Than Expected

By: Melanie Scarborough

The next 10 weeks will be the best of Barack Obama's life.  He has been elected to the highest office of the greatest nation by 62 million Americans otherwise known as "The People You Can Fool All of the Time."

From now through Inauguration Day, they will continue to swoon over him and his promises of "change."  But on Obama's first day in the Oval Office, he will begin to disappoint.

His acceptance speech on election night was essentially a disclaimer of all the assurances he made for the past two years.  Referring to the agenda he had espoused, Obama told his followers, "We may not get there in one year, or even one term."  In the course of a day, "change we can believe in" became change we better not count on.

Of course, Obama is only being realistic. This country has a deficit of $455 billion, and total debt tops $10 trillion. Digging a deeper hole by enacting Obama's spending proposals would be foolish, perhaps catastrophic.

Undoubtedly, that explains why he tried to tamp down expectations even further on Friday by saying, "None of this [agenda] can be accomplished if we continue to see a potential meltdown in the banking system or the financial system."

But that is not going to sit well with Obama devotees like Peggy Joseph, the woman who explained to a television reporter that she was jubilant because  Obama's election meant, "I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car! I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage!"

After Obama is sworn in, she and her cohort expect to be awash in redistributed money. It that doesn't happen, they are going to be more bitter than those folks who cling to guns and religions.

Obama will disillusion still more supporters if he breaks his promise to give a tax cut to the middle class while raising taxes on those earning $250,000 a year, as he's already signaled he will do.

Last week Obama backpedaled, "I think that the plan that we've put forward is the right one, but obviously over the next several weeks and months, we're going to be continuing to take a look at the data and see what's taking place in the economy as a whole."

Joe Biden was right that if Americans were foolish enough to elect an untested leader, the rest of the world would test him for us. Within hours of Obama's election, Russia announced that it will deploy short-range missiles near Poland.

Apparently recognizing Obama as someone whose willingness to appease makes Neville Chamberlain look hard-nosed, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cabled his congratulations, as did Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Our enemies are giddy; our allies are nervous.  That does not bode well for calm.

Yet presumably, many of those who voted for Obama did so because they have faith in his implicit promise to bring about world peace and galactic harmony by sitting down with rogues and dictators and showing them the error of their ways. When that proves impossible (Obama is unable to eradicate evil: Stop the presses!), he will lose another segment of support.

Anti-war voters were among Obama's earliest supporters after he called last year for immediate withdrawal of the troops in Iraq. Although he backed away from that position before the election, Obama still promised to begin drawing down forces.

As commander-in-chief, he may well be persuaded not to abandon Iraq prematurely, a reversal that would cause a large faction of his followers to abandon their support for him.

Infatuation fizzles; excitement fades.  Sometimes even the most benighted see the light. Six months from now - when the country's economic woes are still bad and perhaps getting worse; when Obama has angered some of our allies and emboldened our enemies; when the covetous aren't seeing their wallets overflowing with their neighbor's money; when the war in Iraq grinds on - how many of Obama's 62 million fans still will be as enamored of him?

It may occur to them that he said what they wanted to hear, that he did whatever it took to get elected. And that that represents anything but change. It's just politics as usual.

Well...all of you SHEEP out there that voted this imbecile moron as leader of this (at one time great) country, will get exactly what you deserve. Oh, one other thing - if he thinks that his picture will hang in every classroom, he has another think coming. He will never, neaver measure up to George Washington!!!

Thanks Melanie. I can always count on you for negative and petty comments about President Elect Obama. So now 62 million Americans are fools according to you. Nothing would please you and morons like Shirley to see Obama and the country fail. How unpatriotic you are. Look, McCain lost. Get over it. America has spoken. Might I suggest you listen to McCain and the Governor or California when they said lets work together for the good of the country. No, instead we get jealous rants from you and your followers. This "newspaper" obviously is nothing but a right wing propaganda rag. I use it to line my dog's poop box and make sure your picture is up front so she can poop on you face.

You're just right, people have chosen to elect the most inexperienced president ever. He promised to deliever what is impossible. He just like the catholic church and politics around, say it, but not doing it. Get your sit and then sit on it.

Greg you are right. Judging by the way these two ran their campaigns gave me a good idea who would best run the country. McCain's sporadic behavior when the economic crisis flaired up and his picking Palin was the last straw for me. Right now you seeing a childish display of sour grapes from the McCain supporters.

It is so obvious and typical that anyone with an intelligent opinion other than people like you, Greg, who can keep coming up with the same comments as " using this rag as paper for the dog to poop on" needs to get a life!! I think watching your dog pooping is sick enough, but to let everyone know is worse. Whose the moron here?

Shirly, You think calling the next President of the United States a "imbecile moron" and not hanging his picture in every classroom an Intelligent opinion?

Greg: re: Melanie's article dated 10/20/08..."Judge Obama by the company he keeps" If this is the type of man you want running this country, yes. He has no morals or scrupples. Furthermore, be assured, his association with the likes of these racketeers will surely put us all asunder. What else but a moron would do this?

Yes Shirley, and McCain is as pure as the driven snow. Yes, I read Melanie's previous article. It turns out he has associations with some unsavory company too, Keaton and others including Ayers. But no, you don't want to hear about that. Nor do you want to discuss a person who dumped his wife because she was not pretty anymore and married a young trophy wife with money. Talk about character. So, it all comes down to your opinion. But the bottom line is the smear tactics did not work this time for McCain. There is too much information out there thanks to the internet so folks can come to their own conclusion. And they did. The bottom line is you are mad because your guy lost and you want to vent your anger on this site and this completely bias newspaper sympathetic to your beliefs. Unfortunately, everyone does not agree with you.

Just one other thing, Greg. The old adage will sum up my above point, and that is...if you lie with dogs, you'll get up with fleas.

I agree Melanie time will tell who was right and who was wrong. There is no doubt that this great nation has to prepare itself for some very difficult times ahead. The problem may be that no one is willing to make sacrifices and those who voted for change should stop to realize that government cannot be the soluation for everything. The past 50 years has proven how enormous our federal and local governments have become and it will continue to expand under this new administration promising change. There is no stopping it now unless the people who still believe in less governemtnt vote in the next mid-term election 2010 as independently informed citizens and not as media fans. We just have to sit and wait. Hopefully, the country does not have to file for bankruptcy before then.

Thank you for your article. It is the only one I've been able to read with "Obama" in it. If only McCain had chosen a qualified running mate, I'd have voted for him. As it was, I had no one to vote for. To those friends of mine trying to get me on the Obama bandwagon, I told you so. And to quote George Bernard Shaw, "A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul."

Nov 10, 2008

My God, he's not in office yet and it has not been a week since his election victory and the I told you so's are already beginning. Oh wow, Obama is not perfect.OH my God, he is back peddling. Oh, my God, McCain would be just perfect if he was elected. He would break none of his campaign promises. What a bummer.

I think that all of the naysayers (bitter republicans and Obama haters)should look at a time when president Kennedy was elected. The nation was looking for a change and he was overwhelmingly elected into office with little to no experience.Obama can only do so much due to the mess the current administration has left the country in. So at least give the man a chance before the I told you so's start!

It seems, when you don't have anything good to say about your own party, you attack the opposing party.

It seems that the writer should get her facts right. Russia is deploying those missiles because of bases that the current Bush wants, but it seems that she has what I call blameitonobamaitis.

It makes them happy to see America fail. Read Jay Ambrose on Wednesday. I guarantee he will find something to say against Obama. Bet on it.

Obamabashing is the only refuge for the defeated advocates for far-right candidates. Obama's election means job security for full-time Obama haters. Their job will be to invent a dark side to every issue, every day in order to try to make their side look better. Bill Buckley would be ashamed of you.

You Obama People just don't get it do you? I can't speak for everyone, but here's the way I see it. YOU elected someone with a questionable background (muslim upbringing, not living in this country till grown, doesn't salute the flag or wear a flag pin, and... this is the scariest part of all: his choice of friends...need I go on?)and, God knows why, you would even consider this sort of person to even run for president. Doesn't anybody see a pattern here?? "There are none so blind as those who refuse to see".

Republican and proud of it!

Nov 12, 2008

All of you who voted Obama in, opened the door further for the Al Qaeda - Osama bin Laden regime, who have already infiltrated our country. May God (not allah) have mercy on you!

An American - STILL!

Nov 12, 2008

Just because some people chose to NOT vote for Obama, doesn't mean that they're OBAMA HATERS! They, obviously, considered him as a bad choice. As for those of us who DIDN'T vote for Obama think that his promises to fix-all, heal-all, are full of holes. My God, you all are acting as if the man can walk on water! When he turns stones into bread, then, and only then, will I believe!

A Nonstop Orgy for Obama Haters

Nov 12, 2008

Hatred (just read these posts), lies about his religion, a serious spike in death threats against the President-elect that the Secret Service has connected to Palin's rallies. What's American about that? Is that what you're proud of? I have a vastly different idea in mind where differences are debates and people are respected. Go back and listen McCain's election night speech -- that was American.

I agree with almost everything you say Melanie. But unlike you I admit the fact that I despise a black man holding the office of president. You and I think very much alike but I don't write for a newspaper so I can just come right out and say it without repercussions. Let them call us racists or other names, but we can lift our heads a say we are proud of it. Keep up the good work Melanie you speak for many of us who like the status quo.

Nov 12, 2008

Don't ever forget that Obama is inheriting a deficit created by Bush, a war created by Bush and an economy created by Bush.

Greg & Dr. Rex, Talk about racist, what about the Righteous Rev Wright! He's the most blatant, biggest racist of them all!! And he professes to teach the gospel according to Gods word! Please, don't even go there! And while we're at it, let's ask the good Rev Jesse Jackson, and all those other Black activist how the REALLY feel about the white people, because sooner or later, we're all going to see whether or not just how the blacks are going to react, now that there's a black man running the ountry. Once they find out how he (Obama) can't keep those promises, the first thing you're going to hear is how he is for all the white people. This is not and never will be a win-win situation.
