Why the suddenly shy press corps?

By: Newt Gingrich

June 12, 2009

Here’s a riddle: In the midst of what is being called the worst recession since the Great Depression, why is the press being so timid about President Obama’s economic policies?

I ask because the May employment figures are out. The new jobs data blatantly, unambiguously contradict the claims made by the President earlier in the year when he was justifying the stimulus bill. But the silence from the mainstream media over the difference between President’s promises and his results has been nothing short of deafening.

Back in February, President Obama repeatedly argued that the need to pass the $787 billion stimulus bill was so dire that there was no time from members of Congress to read it first. Things would get worse before they got better, we were told. But without the stimulus bill, America would suffer economic Armageddon.

To make their case, the Obama Administration produced a chart showing that with the stimulus bill, unemployment would reach 8 percent by June of 2009. Without the $787 billion infusion of taxpayer funds, we were told, unemployment would hit 8.7 percent.

In fact, the May jobless data put the actual unemployment rate at 9.4 percent.

If an enterprising White House reporter bothered to do the math, he or she would reach this startling conclusion: Since the passage of the stimulus bill, the U.S. economy has lost one million more jobs than President Obama assured us we would lose if we had done nothing at all.

Of course, economic analysis is a tricky business. The press that covers the President must know this. They must have given George W. Bush the benefit of the doubt when he reported jobless numbers, right? They gave Pesident Bush the benefit of the doubt, right?

Wrong. Throughout the Bush years, the mainstream media showed slightly more skepticism of the administration’s claims. Even when the Bush White House reported actual (not estimated) steady or improving employment figures, many  reporters usually found a way to either ignore the news or put a negative spin on it.

Then-CBS news anchor Dan Rather’s response to June, 2004 unemployment figures was typical. The data showed the unemployment rate remaining steady at 5.6 percent, with 248,000 new jobs created.

But Rather managed to find some bad news in this improving economic picture. He reported that “while the jobs picture is improving nationally, there are still some problems locally” and highlighted a factory in Ohio that was closing down, causing 1,300 workers to lose their jobs.

Fast forward five years later and the same press corps that valiantly covered 1,300 local job loses despite steady national employment under the Bush Administration has now turned its back on the 1,000,000 Americans who are unemployed despite the billions in taxpayer dollars being spent by the Obama Administration.

The problem goes way beyond media bias. The Obama Administration is engaged in an ongoing con job when it comes to its policies on the economy. The stimulus bill, sold to the American people as the last great hope for economic recovery, is being revealed for the giant pot of political payola it was.

The administration is trying to muddy the waters by its constant use of the meaningless metric “jobs saved or created” – as President Obama did yet again when he said that the stimulus bill would result in 600,000 jobs “saved or created this summer.”

But the May unemployment numbers put the lie to this slippery formulation. The administration told us that with the stimulus bill we would have 8 percent unemployment and without it we would have 8.7 percent unemployment. In reality, we have 9.4 percent unemployment. How did the stimulus manage to “save” jobs when there are a million less jobs today than there would have been if Congress hadn’t passed it?

Maybe the administration’s fuzzy math is great politics, but it is meaningless economics. Isn’t discerning the difference between the two what the White House press corps exists to report?

The press corps has gone to great lengths – from publishing top secret information to ruining lives and careers – to let the American people know when they think they’re being duped. So where are the exposes on the Obama Administration’s budget trickery? Where is the question being asked: If government can so easily control the economy, can’t it hurt as well as heal?

Where is the network news feature on the 1,000,000 Americans who would have jobs today if it weren’t for the Obama stimulus act?

Newt, Don't you know that it's partly your responsibility that the economy is in the state it's in? Oh, wait a minute, you say you weren't even in Congress when all this went down? Well I'm sure that your admonishment to be silent or suffer the consequences is on the way.

Obama is making unsupportable statements and is not being held accountable. That is the bottom line. A "free" press? Or a "cult" press? You be the judge. Cult: Definition: 1. religion: a system of religious or spiritual beliefs, especially an informal and transient belief system regarded by others as misguided, unorthodox, extremist, or false, and directed by a charismatic, authoritarian leader 2. religious group: a group of people who share religious or spiritual beliefs, especially beliefs regarded by others as misguided, unorthodox, extremist, or false 3. idolization of somebody or something: an extreme or excessive admiration for a person, philosophy of life, or activity ( often used before a noun ) the cult of youth a cult hero 4. object of idolization: a person, philosophy, or activity regarded with extreme or excessive admiration

Gee, I don't know. A quick look for "may unemployment stimulus" in the Washington Post found the news Mr Gingrich says is not there: "The economy has shed 1.6 million jobs since the stimulus measure was signed in February, far overshadowing White House announcements estimating the effort has saved 150,000 jobs." for example.

Gingrich sums up my feelings about Obama and his regime quite nicely "The problem goes way beyond media bias. The Obama Administration is engaged in an ongoing con job when it comes to its policies on the economy. The stimulus bill, sold to the American people as the last great hope for economic recovery, is being revealed for the giant pot of political payola it was.

Anyone that thought Obama's plan ever even gave any consideration to unemployment is delusional. It's purpose was to increase government and grab power. Prior Presidents have demonstrated that the way to improve the economy is to cut taxes and get government out of the way. Obama's done the exact opposite. In spite of all evidence to the contrary, liberals will never admit their ideals are inherently flawed and don't work as clearly demonstrated by Cuba, USSR, etc. Government interference via Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, etc., brought this calamity on us, and they will only contribute to its continuation in the vein of FDR. So much for the great liberal theories on the economy.

Newt, Newt, Newt: Did you forget that as far back as the campaign Obama banned two reporters from his plane who wrote stories in Florida he didn't like. The press is cowed because the administration has made it clear they own the White House Press Corps, and if anybody dare write anything critical, they lose their right to write anything.

One of the greatest protectors of freedom is our free press. They are supposed to question the government and push the government to be honest and truthfull. I used to believe that the media had only our best interest at heart. I now believe that couldn't be further from the truth. I started watching Fox news a couple of years ago and boy did I have my eyes opened. Listening to interviews and watching feeds of interviews that were never carried on other outlets was a real awakening. What finally tore it for me was the Rev Wright and his racist rants that were almost ignored by the MSM if they could almost cover that up what else would they do? It is scary.

I've felt for a long time that the biggest loser in the last presidential election was the press. They lost a great deal of credibility. It's a real shame. Our country needs an active press that will challenge our government. That they don't see that Obama needs to be challenged, like every other president, is our loss. Looking at the brighter side...Those in the press who can snap themselves out of this mental state and start reporting on it will probably do very well.

Essentially, that which we refer to as the mainstream media can no longer be referred to as the "free" press. The publications to which Mr. Gingrich refers to that have published top secret information and ruined lives, not enlighten us but to foster a political agenda, are not agents of information but political agents of propaganda. These political operatives are anything but shy when it comes to publishing "news" that can destroy a position or person they oppose. It may be politically correct to refer to their agenda motivated behavior as shyness but traitorous would better fit their actions.

Wait until the GM and Chrysler dealership closures hit the "unemployment chart". We'll be close to 11%. The MSM will still not report anything that would put Barry's administration in a bad lite. The MSM has shown it does not like America and the citizens there of. History will show that the media was the biggest disgrace during these last 9 yrs. If I was a reporter at any of these media companies I would be ashamed to go home at night. The price our soldiers payed for them having the right to be able to go to press, is not worthy of their sacrifies. If anyone reporter had the guts it took for our soldiers to land on the beaches of Normany then we would have a media worthy of the courage it needed to print the truth and just the facts.

Its obvious why the press will not ask. The press is infatuated with all things obama. Collectively the act just like a teen aged school girl with a crush on the high school football captain. It would be amusing if it was not so dangerous. It is the press and the filibuster proof congress which has enabled obama in his remaking of America into a version of France.

Reading this reminds me why it's so great the Newt Gingrich is irrelevant in American politics. Smart people who make dumb arguments do so for nefarious reasons. We'd be worse off without the stimulus. The Bush economy was worse than we expected. Everyone knows that. Newt can tune into Fox News for his alternate reality.

As for rising gas prices, remember that the Democrats have long stated PUBLICLY that they would like to see higher gas prices so people would be "persuaded" to buy more fuel-efficient cars. Kerry was talking about an extra 50-cent per gallon tax in 2004. Now that they own 2 of the Big 3 American carmakers, and have announced that they intend to push for the production of more fuel-efficient cars, does this administration have any incentive to lower gas prices? I don't think so. In fact, higher gas prices will make GM cars even more attractive (but who wants to pay $40,000 for the Chevy Volt?). Just make sure you have plenty of KY on hand, because you know what Barry and the other Democrats intend to do to us.

I agree. I actually lost my job because of the stimulus package. Nobody is doing any work because they're waiting for the stimulus money to come out. the MSM spins everything for Obama. the reason for the sorry state of the media business is simple. the people involved in it are no longer trustworthy, no longer objective, no longer anything of merit. done in by their liberal professors, they assume the right to shade the truth, ignore facts, display overt bias, anything else in their quest for the "given right" of promoting their own agenda. the message is, think as we do, or we'll stack the deck until you do. not on my watch....

America is being destroyed at an astonishing speed. Here in Michigan, we are not in recession, we are in a depression. Jobs are being lost, not saved or created every single day. We can complain about it all we want, but this country needs a true moral, ethical leader to actually do something rather than dictate or complain about it online, the radio and TV.

The last two months as the unemployment numbers in Obama's America have shot up like a rocket it has become harder and harder to find out what those numbers are. When the last 9.4% number came out I went to CNN and could not find a headline. I had to search on their business section to find an article. When I found it the headline was "Job losses lower than expected", and I had to sort through the article about the good news to find out that unemployment had jumped a full 1/2% to 9.4%. CNN made that sound like good news. Can you imagine under any other President. That would have been a huge headline...of bad news. But in Obama's American 9.4% unemployment and shooting up like a Rocket is somehow? Good News!

It is such an oddity to now have a MSM that acts as if it were government-controlled, but supposedly does so freely without having to be coerced. An optimist might hope that those in control of the MSM will eventually see that the melding of their interests with those of the political left to gain a seat at the table as powerbrokers will not have been good for the stability and possibly even the continuation of our republic. Realistically there seems little chance of this happening, so more articles such as this one railing against media bias, while instructive, will change nothing. Most of the MSM have undergone complete Borg-like assimilation by the political left and conservatives will just have to learn to deal with it.

A presidential election was held in Nov.2008. The American people elected Barac Obama. The last time Newt Gingrich held public office he resigned without finishing his term. So far I say Obama has alot more credibity than Gingrich. However if you don't agree, have Gingrich run against Obama in 2013. The voters have spoken.

Why is it the American people are clueless with this man? He clearly understands the government, history, economic data- the substance more than any other politician out there today. Yet he polled at only an % favorability rating before the 08 presidential candidates announced. Sure, there was marital trouble, but Obama admitted to doing cocaine and nobody cares. If this guy were our president, the country wouldn't be headed into the sinkhole.

Jun 13, 2009

Mr. Gingrich; If you are really as stupid as this article seems to indicate, then I may actually start feeling sorry for the Republicans. I challenge you to make a prediction about this 12 trillion dollar economy for the next 6 months and see how close you get. If you don't understand the meaning of the word estimate, then you shouldn't be allowed anywhere near anything that calls itself a news organization.

As the economy improves, we may actually see the unemployment rate get worse. This is because discouraged workers are not included in the rate. This will actually show that people who had given up looking for work will actually come back out and look again. It happens every down part of the business cycle. Grow up and stop whining about the media - its a great straw man when you don't have anything useful to say.

Jun 13, 2009

Well, as the only part of the stimulus that is in effect, Newt is blaiming the 1,000,000 lost jobs on the tax cuts. And I agree. Clinton pile a tax hike on top of the Bush read-my-lips-no-new-taxes tax hike and that started the longest economic expansion in US history with an average of 200,000 jobs added every month over the 8 years Clinton was president. President Bush called for and got tax cuts piled on tax cuts in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008 and on average the monthly job creation was less than 1000 a month. Newt is right: Obama should have hiked taxes to stimulate the economy and fund the investment in health care and sustanable energy projects. But I doubt Newt will ever come out and clearly call for tax hikes. And until Newt and the other Republicans denounce Reaganomics, which created 70% of the current Federal debt during the two decades of Reagan, Bush, and Bush.

Hey, Newt. Why don't you call Santamayor a racist again and then back off? This man is a bloated, discredited, scatter shot fool. We're just now getting back on our feet from 8 years of incompetent-boob conservatism, Newt. As it's been stated, we're turning around a battle ship not a bicycle. As the economy continues to turn Newt and all the other hot-button, bring-out-the-worst-in-everyone d-bag conservatives will be left holding the bag once again.

Obama Is Not The One

Jun 13, 2009

The media has fawned all over "the One" since long before he was elected to lead this nation. Now they report gleefully on the stories that make Obama look good, but shove under the rug those that go against him. Typical of a synchophatic media, sucking up to BOH. He is no the ONE America, wake up and get him out of office before it is too late. Four years of this government will be four years too many. Protest his policies at every turn, turn out to do so, and be aware that you will be called every name in the book by the beloved liberal media, who can't understand what truth and reality are.

Newt is old. Newt is so yucky and gross. Why would someone listen to him? Who cares that what he says makes total sense. He is old and has made mistakes in his life. Obama is young and talks so good. Who cares that he is making big mistakes that are tearing down our economy. He is young and went to college and did some community organizing. If you like Newt, you must be dumb. If you like Obama, you must be cool. Obama inherited the jobless numbers. Bush lied when Obama called him in February to ask how bad things were. If it is worse than you expected, it's Bush's fault. If it's not, Obama saved jobs. If it's good, Obama created jobs. Goodnight San Francisco.

I totally agree with Newt's analysis, but as a former/current university professor, he should know when to use "Less" and when to use "fewer". If you can count it, use "fewer" as in 'a million fewer jobs today" rather than "a million less jobs today."

Wow, I am shocked that there is actually a current university professor who is not a socialist. It is sad the ignorance displayed by the Obama supporters. They have no idea what they are losing. Why in blazes would you want a bunch of idiots in Washington controlling most of your hard earned dollars? That is what the Constitution that Obama says is "too restrictive" was trying to avoid. Guess most Obamaites prefer being taken care of as opposed to standing on their own two feet. Or maybe they think that they don't have the intelligence to run their own lives. Sad.
