Palinphobes and the audacity of type

By: Noemie Emery

Now that the Obama presidency is nearing the 60-day mark, it’s time to thank those fastidious scribes on the left and the right who worked so hard to warn us against Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, and the dire things that would surely occur if she ever got close to executive power.

How right they were to insist that she was unfit for high office. Let’s just imagine what she might have done:

As president, she might have caused the stock market to plunge over 2,000 points in the six weeks after she assumed office, left important posts in the Treasury unfilled for two months, been described by insiders as ‘overwhelmed’ by the office, and then gone on to diss the British Prime Minister on his first state visit, giving him, as one head of state to another, a set of DVDs plucked from the aisles of Wal Mart, a tasteful gift, even if they can’t be played on a TV in Britain. (Note, the Prime Minister, who is losing his eyesight, may even be blind in one eye).

As vice president, she might have told Katie Couric that when the stock market crashed in 1929, President Franklin D. Roosevelt went on TV to reassure a terrified nation. Or on her first trip abroad as Secretary of State, she might have, as the AP reported, “raised eyebrows on her first visit to Europe...when she mispronounced her “EU counterparts names and claimed U.S. democracy was older than Europe’s,” then gave the Russian minister a gag “reset” button, on which the word “reset” was translated incorrectly.

What a good thing that Palin, whom Christopher Buckley called “an embarrassment, and a dangerous one,” wasn’t in office to cause such debacles, and that we have Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Hillary Clinton instead.

“This is not a leader, this is a follower,” wrote ex-Reagan muse Peggy Noonan. “She follows what she imagines is the base, which is in fact a vast and broken-hearted thing whose pain she cannot, actually, imagine...she doesn’t seem to understand the implications of her own thoughts.”

Huh? While indulging in prose such as this, the Palinphobes didn’t seem to understand the implications of Palin’s record as governor, which they appear to never have looked at, while obsessing over her life in Alaska (too rural), her children (too many), and her exploits as a huntress (too much).

This is the flip side of their refusal to be disturbed by the fact that Obama had no record to speak of, as long as he looked like a Gap or Vogue model, and could write and could talk up a storm. A Gap or Vogue model would never disgrace you, and besides, he was there.

“You’re camping, and you wake up one morning and there is a mountain,” as David Brooks put it. “The next morning, there is a mountain...Obama is just the mountain. He is just there.” Braced by rationales such as this, the literati flocked to Obama, while denouncing Palin as appealing to the party’s least logical members and wing.

Call the Palinphobes lacking in logic and they will have tantrums, but this time the sandal might fit. This is the Audacity of Type, a faith-based illusion if ever there was one, the belief that qualities shared by and appealing to pundits and writers - glibness, a worldly patina, and a superficial verbal facility - are those needed to run a great nation in a troubled and dangerous era.

But which is more rational, to place limited trust in a proven reformer, who can learn certain facts she does not know already, or to breathe fictional traits into an unknown quantity, who has never run anything, or ever done much besides talk?

“Having a first class temperament and first class intellect, President Obama will...surely understand that traditional left-politics aren’t going to get us out of this pit.” Buckley wrote last October. Surely he will.

Obama may be there, but your 401k isn’t. Buckley and Brooks are now feeling queasy, while Noonan and friends are taking to Xanax. “The sale of antidepressants and antianxiety drugs is widespread,” she reported last Friday. “People feel ‘unled, overwhelmed.”’

But at least, we now have sophisticates running the country, not a moose-hunting ditz from Alaska. God knows what might happen then.

God bless you Noemie for pointing out the incredible hypocrisy that drives us hayseeds in middle America completely looney. In our parallel universe, we saw the simple quality in Sarah that we knew would be most helpful in Washington -- she was one of us. And we believe "one of us" is ultimately what we need in D.C. if this is ever to be fixed.

Let's face it, Palin was a idiot and how close she came is scary enough without rehashing by the "weekly standard" crowd. Face it, if Repubs what to be the party of dumb, they have their frontrunner...

Silver linings. Palin would have been tainted by her presence in a loony McCain administration and been toast by 2012. The MSM and their gulls will need four years to make their slow, stunned 180. (They'll have to do this once it's clear that there's no point listening to the White House until 2013 and that 46% of the country is tuned in to Palin.) Some maxim about the swing of the pendulum. And finally, we should be safe from another Obama until the next one comes along.

Sarah would have been real change we could believe in. If we don't get some of "us" regular people in Washington soon, I fear we'll have 8 more years of same old politics. Nothing will change.

Unfortunatley, the people running the country, live in the population belts that comprise a small percentage of the geographic nation. The rest of us live in the (relatively) sparse, vast majority of the land mass. The two worlds have completely different needs and wants. sadly, the people that live in 1% of the land mass, think they know what is best for the rest - but don't have a clue what makes the majority of this country function on a daily basis.

Thank you for writing an article that is truthful. Yesterday I received my Newsweek magazine. On page 63, in the Newsmakers section there is a interesting blurb that further backs up your essay. "Levi Leaves" is the title on the black insert."But now we really wish that Grandma Sarah were VP. Why? Because , let's face it, the Obamas and the Bidens are never going to give us a White House scandal this juicy." Stunning , isn't it? The MSM is already telling us 50 days into a new Administration that there will be no "Scandals". Remember Murphy Brown, and how there was nothing wrong with out of wedlock babies? Me too. Palin's daughter continues to get hammered for a teeenage pregnancy , with the negative space clearly out in front.... See they really are white trash. Juicy scandal? Don't worry it is coming..Scheudenfreude always curses those who dare it.

The problem for us "Palinphobes" have with her and her ilk is that anyone to the left of her EXTREME positions are considered socialist, communists, and any other inflammatory label that can be applied to someone that does not adhere to the far rights unwavering principals. The problem with the approach of the far right that she so aptly represents is that there is no wavering from their ideals as they are "sent form god himself". They have taken the approach that they can not negotiate with anyone as they have the moral authority of heaven itself. For many Americans this just will not do.

The people who voted for those that are currently ruining...err I mean, running this country, will post her in droves, insisting Palin was a witless rube. They will slobber their hate all over this article and not once acknowledge that the country is spinning in circles under a complete lack of leadership. The president did not give us hope and change, he gave us so, so much more of the same, it is shameful. But they wont see that, they will only try to point out perceived flaws of a woman who at least had the courage to stand up to her own party. Obama, coming out of the most politically corrupt state in the union, didn't have the courage to do one thing their..but that doesn't matter, only thing that matters is their irrational hate of a woman who at least made a stand and kept her word.

BRILLIANT! The MSM is absolutely corrupt and their refusal to discuss or look at Gov. Palin's record and WHY she was/is the most popular Governor in the country is beyond contempt. Mar 18, 2009

Too funny. Do you think Palin would have to give every "speech" with the teleprompter stitched to her forehead? Do you think she would be forcing the military to pay for their own war wounds? Do you think she would be throwing tax payer funded White House parties every week? Do you think she would have ran the national debt up like this? Do you think there would be national "outrage" over the AIG bonuses? Do you think she would be claiming exhaustion? Do you think she would have hired tax cheats? You libs can go back to tired and miserable day and make sure you have your food pre chewed for you.

I live in Los Angeles. I delight in the reactions I get when I tell people that Palin was my choice for PRESIDENT from the four major party candidates for President and VP. I inform them of my view typically after they have gone on a long conclusory rant which in tone, if not substance, oozes disdain for this vulgar "woman" who is nothing short of a joke. I take great pleasure in watching folks become completely unglued when I express my support for her. You can almost see them reaching into their memories to review my resume to make certain they were correct in their assumption that I was educated properly.

Hits the nail on the head. I've noticed, though, in the last week or so the honeymoon's over, and buyer's remorse is setting in. Obamamania is dying. For TheNurse, please explain how Palin's positions are EXTREME? Because you don't like them? She is in fact a very mainstream conservative, very similar to Reagan, but you probably consider anyone to the right of Jane Fonda 'extreme'. You should be impressed that she's straightforward about it, and you can decide to agree or disagree based on truth, rather than a liar like Obama pretending to be in the center when he's really far left.

Funny how the left now wants you to have a solution to anything you question. It was fine for them to be against anything W wanted over the last 8 years just because he wanted it. Republicans have offered plenty of solutions but the Sainted One and fellow dems just disimiss them and say that is the same old same old. A tax holiday on payroll taxes that would go into affect right now is not same old same old. *** POSTED Mar 18, 2009 GB: "Take a xanax. . . the election is over--you lost--get over it. Excellent!! It's so rare to find a thoughtful piece regarding Gov. Palin. Usually what we get is some foaming at the mouth by a sufferer of Palin Derangement Syndrome, much like some of the comments here. Interestingly enough, the last Rasmussen poll in late January 2009, shows that her nationwide favorability rating has increased from 49 percent just after the election to 52 percent, with big gains among Independent voters. A poll yesterday found that her popularity in Alaska is 64 percent.

This doesn't address the fact that proven reformer means running a state rich with oil and smaller than several cities. When you talk in that ridiculous manner specifically aimed at "joe six-pack," (as highlighted by the first comment suggesting we need "one of us" running this country... Don't want to speculate who the us is...), you are going to have a rough time with the city people, who saw her as, myself included, fake. I agree obamas having a rough time thus far and maybe McCain would be doing better, but if you really don't like Obama, I wouldn't suggest supporting palin.

Unfortunately, one of the things we as a nation don't do very well is learn from our mistakes. Explain to me how we could elect the likes of Barack Obama after living through the likes of Jimmy Carter? Opponents of Gov. Palin were quick to point out that as VP she would be one heartbeat away from the presidency, yet they swoon at the mere mention of Joe Biden's name, knowing full well that we now have a VP that is also one heartbeat away from the presidency, and yet he can't go 5 minutes without sticking both feet in his mouth. What unexpected crisis could a misspoken "Bidenism" uttered on an international stage by a President Biden lead us into? International comdemnation? War? As long as we continue to send "the same old thing (and Obama and crew are "the same old thing") to Washington we will continue to get the "same old thing" (i.s what we have now) from Washington. Live and learn, America.

Many young people can't see past the role played by Tina Fey on SNL. Added to the fact that Palin is from Alaska. Some assume that it's an unknown, far away - remote, primitive, and dohickey place. In addition, many older folks are uncomfortable with the idea of the combination of beauty and brain (or perhaps that they are afraid that's it is lethal?) Just go and check out her works in Alaska. And Palin can give a speech and answer a question, even getting angry (without a teleprompter). AMAZING!

The David Brooks column you refer to contained the following sentence: "Those of us who consider ourselves moderates — moderate-conservative, in my case — are forced to confront the reality that Barack Obama is not who we thought he was." As I read that sentence, I could only wonder by what evidence had he reached the conclusion that Obama was anything other that the orthodox, hard left liberal that he is? You are entirely correct. It was a matter of aesthetics and class. They should be ashamed. And here we are.

This article demonstrates the problem with the Republican party. An article framed as a defense of Sarah Palin is, in fact, simply an attack on Barack Obama. Why? Palin doesn't stand for anything. Except as a person, there is nothing to defend. The election is over, Palin is gone and irrelevant. It will take actual ideas to get her back on the map, but that's one thing she's short on.

Those who consider Sarah Palin to be extreme and idiotic (and worse) should grow up and educate yourselves on who Sarah Palin really is. Get the facts, not MSM opinion! FACT: Sarah is the most popular governor in the country - for a good reason. Look at her actions and results! FACT: Alaska can balance their BUDGET and doesn't need a handout. How many other states can claim that? (Hint: none) FACT: Sarah is very educated, experienced, and motivated regarding ENERGY. FACT: While Sarah is a Christian, she does not force Christian beliefs on anyone. Any accusations in this regard are false. Before you decide to hate someone, get your facts straight. The truth about "Sarah haters" is that some people hate Christians and pro-lifers. The rest of the "Sarah haters" are elitists. A huge group of us are open-minded to Sarah's strengths and have confidence that she will be an excellent President of the USA. The sooner the better!!

Nice article-please dont forget the dissing by the administration of America's wounded heroes, the disarming of our American pilots and AIG fiasco orchestrated by Dodds and the treasury secretary Geitner. Lets not go into these facts and realize that Obama's fate is sealed-he cannot redeem hisself and this is less than 60 days into his term. While America needed a captain for its ship to manuever through the dangerous waters,Obama voted present. He is a 1 termer at best-if he even makes it through that one term. Thank you for this write up.It always serves as a reminder that those elites have been brainwashed to think on one avenue-and that avenue is definitely not good for America.

The right coined "Palin Derangement Syndrome" and called it an actual psychiatric diagnosis. One problem, however, is that the right has always believed psychiatry is a pseudoscience. Seems a tad contradictory, no?

I agree completely with this article. At the very least, Sarah Palin would not be legislating literally **trillions** of dollars of our money for "stimulus bills" that don't help the country and don't even create any jobs, at least not until next year. I just hope that by the time Obama leaves the White House, the whole country will **at least** be somewhat leery of voting for candidates about whom little is known, other than that they look good and sound good on TV (and that the TV/newspaper/magazine people are openly drooling over them instead of telling us voters what we need to know before the election).

You didn't mention how helpless and lost Bambi is without his teleprompter... Well, there's always 2012 for Palin... But I am sure Barack Obama's teleprompter will fight tenaciously in 2012 to maintain its stranglehold on the presidency.

Hahahahaha, it is awesome to read comments from members of Obama's cult of personality that call Palin stupid while the guy they supported proves himself to be the most incompetent president of the past 100 years. Seriously, Barack Obama makes Jimmy Carter look like George Washington. McCain and Palin have been vindicated in regard to their comments about lack of experience meaning something. I have also noticed that when Democrats are in office, remarks about their family are off-limits; remember the outrage when people hammered Michelle Obama, rightfully, when she made some ridiculous comments on the campaign trail? We were told comments about family were beyond the pale. Now when Bristol Palin breaks up with her boyfriend (who in the heck cares and how is this relevant to anything) this family is off-limits rule is all of a sudden forgotten.

And a great big "Amen"! to this sentiment!! Remember truth tellers are often unpopular and even sometimes, shot!

Your article lacks any coherent message and is filled with nothing but non sequiturs. Sarah Palin exhibited zero knowledge of the office of the vice president and of the world. She did not deserve high office at this point in her career. Just accept it and hope she improves and maybe will be ready some time in the future.

Notice Emery never actually supports Palin in this article, only denounces the so-called Pallinphobes. It's people like Emery that are truly hurting the GOP. No solutions whatsoever, only attacks. It's also amazing that she attributes lost 401k's and a 2000 point plunge to the man who's been in office for less than 60 days rather than the man who had 8 years. You want your party to succeed? Get rid of the cancers like Emery.

Fortunately, those of us who could see things clearly all along don't need any Xanax. We just wait as the swooning Obama followers clear their eyes and come around. It's understandable that they may well need some pharmaceutical aid for the disillusionment they are suffering; I don't envy them. The trashing of a capable and straight-forward governor was one of the most shameful chapters in our history. Those who did that deserve what they've got now. Next time, pay attention to qualities that matter.

Greg: Our country's problems are compound and started well before 1/20/09 (as everyone knows). There is plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the aisle. However, the stock market started heading downward the day after Obama was elected, because Obama's plans to "fix" our country will not fix it at all. Confidence is down because Obama is trying to destroy the free market and capitalism. Things went from bad to worse with Obama. Let's hope the country is salvageable in 4 years.

Great article. Amongst Biden, Obama, McCain and Palin, Sarah was the ONLY candidate with the experience for the job. When I see or hear people calling her an idiot, I just laugh at those people's own stupidity for uttering the words. They are not even intellectual enough to examine her record, her popularity and the true Sarah Palin, not the one that the idiots in the McCain campaign tried to control. Basing your opinion on someone because on a single ambush interview with Katie (I'd do Obama) Kouric is the definition of stupidity.

Flores de la Hoz: "Does any serious American want Palin playing geo-political chess with China and Russia?" Yes! Let's see: Obama gives money to terrorists, allows the Russian airforce to have airbases in Cuba, loses our main base in Central asia to the Russians hurting our war effort in Afganistian. And lets not forget China who is playing games with our navy and our debt. I would much rather have a hunter in office than some limpwristed liberal that embarrasses the USA to our oldest ally, scorns our greatest ally in the middle east in favor of the terrorist group Hamas. Yeah in 60 days Obama has made a complete mess of world affairs. That is not to mention the hell he has brought to our economy.

What a bunch of dangerous, selfish elites, with Pelosi leading the pack! ... And how is it working having a group of clueless elites in the White House now? I've never felt more confident (not).

Your dissatisfaaction with anything President Obama might or might not be doing, does not in any demonstrate that Sarah Palin - someone who demonstrated considerably less awareness of national and world issues than any of the other three candidates by the way - would have made a better President. They are two completely separate things. If this editorial is trying to relate them somehow, it is not succeeding. And to those who say "one of us" - please speak for YOURSELF. I don't consider Palin's right wing philosophy representative of the US at all. Obama far more centrist viewpoints are much more representative of the majority of Americans than hers will ever be.

As a white professional woman who works in a predominately male field, let me say that what frightened me about Palin was her clear lack of intelligence, lack of inquisitiveness, lack of articulation, lack of knowledge of foreign or national policy, and most frightening, her beliefs towards Islamic culture (as a holy war towards them), antagonism towards science (ie, advocacy of the debunked creatonism), and petty retaliations. Comparing Obama's intelligence, strategic vision, and steady personality to anything Palin could have brought is ridiculous. There are thousands of better qualified Republican women. The support the Republican party has given Palin is evidence of how bankrupt it is.

Our country has thrived on conservative principles for 200+ years! "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Why do we need to remake our country into something that has been tried and failed in other countries? Watering down conservativism is not "the way" to go. Remaining steadfast in our strong conservative convictions is the way to lead our country back on the correct path. True conservative candidates with a backbone will do just fine in future elections; we just haven't seen one in awhile.

Those were all media lies to discredit her and protect Obama, and they can easily be debunked by reading about her from factual, non-biased sources. ... As for Obama's "superiority," he is a great campaigner, but he is not a leader. He and the media did a great job of presenting him as superior, but there is much more to consider than looks and giving speeches when we are talking about the President of the United States. During the campaign, I read a variety of news sources and blogs and collected the FACTS about the EXPERIENCE of the candidates. ... What other qualified Republicans - men or women - do you recommend? A candidate needs to exude leadership, experience, and charisma. One one name jumps to the top for me.

Obama's intellect has nothing to do with ANYTHING. He is not the one calling the shots. He is a puppet and people like George Soros and Nancy Pelosi are calling the shots. They are rushing headlong into Marxism as fast as they can. Someone like Sarah Palin would simply destroy all their plans and waste all that money that they have paid to ACORN, MSM, Hollywood, etc. Of course they are afraid of Sarah. She represents true Americans..something that they fiercely must put down if they are to rule the world in the new world order.

TX-Libertarian: Sarah Palin represents and believes in the greatness of our country's past that made our country into a sound world leader. Not everything in the past is bad and should be ignored or modernized. Her fiscally conservative values are what this country needs to get back on track. Bush is not fiscally conservative, and while I supported him in many ways, he did not do our country any favors with his big government ideas. Sarah does not govern like Bush did. Anyone who claims that is misinformed. And your attempt to equate Sarah Palin with Dan Quayle is simply a lame attempt to throw out a last-hope negative comment. Please share with us the Republican leaders who would do a much better job than Sarah. We're anxious to hear.

As an ostensible member of the Palin-bashing hoi-polloi (elite university, prestigious law school)I know exactly why she aroused such volcanic revulsion: she went to a state college. This is unforgivable. How dare the lumpenproletariat who go to state schools dare to aspire to enter the heights of American power and influence! Don't they know their place? Worse, she revels in her middleclassness! Sara Palin's odyssey reveals an ugly truth about seemingly egalitarian "everybody can get ahead if they work" America: the liberal elites love the poor and minority underclass but despise the middle class which she represents. But since these elites have so thoroughly wrecked this country, we desperately need the common sense and practicality that Sara stands for.

Meanwhile, Sarah Palin's Alaska is one of a handful of state governments in the black. She prudently made the necessary budget adjustments to compensate for lower oil prices. Her energy plan has been hailed by conservatives and environmental groups alike. Alaska is making progress on its gas pipeline that will bring clean, green natural gas to the lower 48. And Sarah Palin's approval ratings are at 64% now. Yeah, we really dodged a bullet there.

Are you saying that instead of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton and all those other "elitists" our country would have been better led by common, uneducated folk during its founding? Have you ever thought that us plain folks don't want people like ourselves in Washington because we don't know *@#&#& about running a country? That is the reason we turn to, you know, those evil elitists? What pray tell do the Republicans have to offer us other than constant calls for tax cuts and their love of Jesus? Palin is an ignorant bimbo with a train wreck of a white trash family and highly questionable ethics. She and Rush are the new leaders of the Party of Lincoln?!! WTF???!!!!!!!!

Sarah Palin is a grasping, greedy, simpleminded harpy who would have driven us off the ideological cliff where Bush placed us. The Obama administration is as imperfect as the man himself, but I'll put my trust in a constitutional law professor over a dimwit beauty queen any day.

I mentioned Ron Paul and I haven't heard one comparison to him on this page. Is he unelectable? He represents more people than Palin does from his tiny district. When I say past, I mean there is nothing new to her message. She is basically reading from old convention platforms, nothing creative at all. If that is what you want then you should invent a time machine, take Dan Quayle back with you as well.

This piece speaks to the strategy of the Obama people and the media (Obama vs. Palin). This piece also points out that all of the Democrats' accusations against Palin could be turned right back at Obama (lack of experience, international experience, etc.).

I know in Alaska, even the Republicans aren't too happy with the Divine Ms Palin these days. The oil pipe project is in shreds. She is a highly successful and popular governor of a state, very successful in balancing a budget and very experienced and knowledgeable in energy matters (highly important in the 21st century). She has done this by her own hard work, not by monetary or PR help from anyone. Further, your assumption that Obama having a Harvard law degree and teaching a college class makes him competent to be our country's president, makes no sense to me. Sounds elitist to me. This article, and its author is patently absurd. The fascination in this country of shooting for the lowest common denominator is both appalling and predictive of the future of the GOP. The fact that people lord Palin over others as "one of us" is not only false, but dangerously ignorant to boot. The author (and I use that term lightly) proves once again that life in the echo chamber is both warm and cozy, but it hurts when you crawl out of it and have to do the walk of shame to explain your asinine points of view. Palin was, and will always be, a national joke of a political figure. She brought nothing innovative or constructive to the debate sans "the wink" and "drill baby drill". Seriously? That's the best the GOP has to offer? God, I yearn for real conservatives and not the faux patriots that surround us now.

I wish this was a joke. "a proven reformer who can learn certain facts she does not know already"? besides being poorly expressed, the idea that a qualification for high office should be the ability to learn facts one does not know already is laughable at best and frightening at worst. And comparing Obama to a Gap model? He not only got into Harvard Law, but became editor of the Law review. Outcompeting all the Ivy league overachievers gunning for those positions takes more than good looks. The LSAT is an intelligence test. I'm pretty sure they don't ask for a headshot on your law school app. And thats not to mention becoming a US senator and winning a brutal primary campaign and presidential campaign. Palin was a desperate and cynical ploy to use evangelicals. She'll never be nominated, the people who really run the party won't allow it, because they are intelligent pragmatists who won't put a fool in the white house.

Matt in VA

Mar 18, 2009

Well said. Palin stood up to her own party in Alaska on numerous occasions. She had an eye to righting wrongs, regardless of who benefited from the largesse in question. She even handles teleprompter problems better than Obama. Her speech at the GOP convention suffered teleprompter problems, but you could barely notice. Obama's so reliant on the teleprompter that he thanked HIMSELF at last night's St. Patrick's day party with Ireland's head of state.

P.A.

Mar 18, 2009

Pete: Instead of your predictions about what Palin would do in the White House, we now have terrorists being released from prison who will likely find new ways to terrorize. We might leave Iraq prematurely and encourage Al-Qaeda to take over Iraq. In addition, we are likely to see world problems with Obama's new friends from Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and Russia. And the heavy taxes on the "wealthy" will raise unemployment. That sounds much better than what Palin would do. I feel so confident with Obama in the White House.

If Obama is so intelligent and did so many wonderful things at Harvard, why won't he allow us to see anything from his Harvard years? He has cast a huge shadow of doubt on himself by his secrecy. The media has made him out to be intelligent and wonderful, but he has given little to no proof of that. ... Everyone has faults and lacks something. It is possible to learn what one does not know, if you have the desire and willpower. A person cannot be taught character and strong work ethic.

Ben

Mar 18, 2009

This is insufferably lazy writing. 1. Palin was largely panned as unsophisticated or stupid. 2. This made her electoral defeat more likely. 3. The people who won that election have made either ridiculous minor gaffes ("reset") or have been in office at the same time the stock market plunged (correlation = causation, anyone?) 5. Thus, Palin wouldn't be so bad. There are plenty of good arguments for why Palin was misrepresented or why Obama is going to be a worse president than Palin would have been, but this isn't one of them.

Chris

Mar 18, 2009

Thanks for clarifying that "noemie". The audience of keen political and economic thinkers that supports you probably really did think you were calling yourself and Sarah Palin stupid. I mean, if they (and you) can believe that everything that has happened in the past 50 days is completely unrelated to the management of the government for the past 8 years (and longer), or that the biggest economic melt-down since the great depression (and one for which we have no analogues) can be solved instantaneously, and without some difficulties, and furthermore, that things couldn't conceivably be worse if, say, McCain-Palin were running the show ... Well, enjoy the wilderness and we'll see you when you have some new ideas that address the problems we face with more than a fantasy of Ms. Everywoman from Alaska.

In truth, real conservatives (and liberals) were obsessing over Palin's experience in Alaska (too pathetic), her intellectual capacity (too stupid), and her overwhelming similarities to Mike Huckabee & George W. Bush (too scary). Straight-up logic, no spin. Real conservatives are quite happy these days... the christian-flavored so-con wing of the GOP is being exorcised (long overdue), and the Obama admin. will eventually trigger a real conservative (libertarian) rebirth. Noemie Emery's strongest "point" here is that Palin's cheery chipmunk style would keep the GOP pundits and the nation off of Xanax. Quite the pro-Palin argument. Very sad.

So many people are laboring under the notion that Sarah Palin is dumb. She is anything but -- she has fine native intelligence and a quick mind. Many people bought the Tina Fey shtick and they confuse the SNL parody with the reality of who she is. The media selectively edited her TV interviews to portray her in the worst light they could cast. Gimme a break -- Katie Couric as the arbiter of gravitas? Charles Gibson simply sneered and peered over his glasses at Palin throughout. Whether she is ready to lead is another question. But the level of vitriol that her presence on the scene has elicited from the media and the Left suggests to me that they fear her.

P.A. Interesting that you assume Obama's academic success is a product of affirmative action. Even assuming this is true (a ridiculous proposition--read his books, listen to him speak, read what smart people say about him--his intellect is not in question) I think it's amazing you'd prefer Sarah Palin's academic credentials--or John McCain's (talk about Affirmative Action)--or George Bush, for that matter--to his. And of course we know Sarah Palin's ascent had nothing to do with her being an attractive woman! To question Obama's intellectual capacities compared to these candidates makes no sense, and if you're going to make stupid arguments, I suggest you shelve this one, as it is truly idiotic. I'd say the same thing for character--whatever you think about Obama, comparing him to Bush, McCain, and Palin the pseudo-reformer is laughable.

That was the exact wisdom that put GWB in -- GWB under whom the unregulated economy metastasized into crisis. So to say we fix the crisis by putting in someone with the same qualifications that got us here... is a bridge to nowhere. This article may or may not raise valid points about media hypocrisy -- but it sure does not persuade me that Palin's what we need!

No one else in the country showed how hollow Obama's candidacy was like Gov. Palin did at the convention--hope the Republicans who were embarrassed by her are pleased with the leadership we are getting. This truly may be the stupidest op-ed I've ever read. Your point seems to be that the current administration has made some minor errors and thus Sarah Palin is somehow more qualified to fill any of the roles you discuss. The same rationale would allow me to say that I should have been quarterback of the Cardinals because Kurt Warner lost the Super Bowl. You chide others in the media for failing to "...understand the implications of Palin’s record as governor..." but you cite no examples of these "implications". You have no argument, no point. Just whining self-pity.

At least some commenters get it. Obama inherited this problem, it wasn't his. And it was a surprise. He never paid any attention to what was going on the country, he didn't expect any problems and he was blindsided. He had no preparation, no study and no experience that would be valid here. So don't blame him for these problems, or not fixing them. His incompetence, unpreparedness, false starts, mismanagement, and failures aren't his fault. We obviously should have elected someone who paid some attention to the country and could assess the problems and possibly prepare for them before inauguration... but the slogans sounded so cool. Or are we going to admit he knew the problems, and still has failed this badly? Unprepared, or incapable... is there another choice?

Brooks, Frum, Noonan and these other elite inside the beltway clowns need to concede that this nation is not going to be corrected until we stop letting the Washington Elites run the show and get an outsider (Sarah) run the show. There have been 3 arguably 4 outsider Presidents. Abe Lincoln (always Top 5), Andrew Jackson Almost always top 10 sometimes top 5), Teddy Roosevelt (always top 10 sometimes top 5) and one bad one Jimmy Carter (was too liberal and was after Watergate or he never would have made it). WIth the Track Record our Nation has had with outsiders why wouldn't we give Sarah a chance. She is not Liberal so as far as the other ones we have batted a 1000 on being quality presidents.

Obama's approval numbers are not wavering - no matter how many of you say it, it doesn't make it true. What's it like living in your own miserable fantasy worlds? Snap out of it - do a little research - stop acting like the dupes the bush admin facillitated. Lay off fox - it's obviously causing you brain damage!

This article is right on the mark. Some of the comments by the Obama lovers blinded by his "aura", though, are of course laughable. Yep, the election is over and it wasn't just the republicans who lost. The whole country lost. The country is floundering, sinking into economic abyss, threatening foreign enemies getting worked up, and we have a bunch of clowns who don't have a clue what they're doing running our government.

Your column points out how difficult and demanding the job is. No doubt. The last 8 years have shown what happens when you put a dolt in that position. Very bad. I'm glad Palin is in Alaska. And I'm willing to live with the fact that her welfare state continues to suck up more federal dollars than they contribute, that her husband can get back to snowmobiles and looking for ways to secede from the United States (why does he hate America?), and that she can get back to reading "everything."

U.S. democracy _is_ older than most of Europe's: the UK and Switzerland pre-date it (even then, depending on your definition of democracy), but France, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc. do not. Many were absolute monarchies or dictatorships well into the 20th century.

Jrock5: We have very good reason to dislike Palin as much as we do - the very first time I ever heard her say anything was her speech at the Republican Convention. She made it VERY clear that stylistically and tone-wise, she would be continuing to divide this country just like Bush. She was nasty, insulting, gimmicky and deliberately divisive. This was the FIRST thing out of her mouth - mockery and snideness. Believe me, I got the message: if she were my President she would have nothing but contempt for me. I'm sorry but when your first national message to the country is a speech like that, I don't care what else you have to say.

Sara Palin was a big dissapointment. I initially thought she was a great addition to the republican team. I was so dissapointed as I slowly realized that she is not very worldly. She knew nothing about forgein policy.(I can see Russia from Alaska!!). She obviously does not read any newspapers etc. as she couldn't name anything she read. Why did the Mcain team keep her from the media for weeks?? She was very good at repeating memorized bullet points that had been given to her. For the most part Sarah did it to herself. The questions the media asked her I could have answered, maybe not as fully as someone who is in government but at least with knowledge. Sarah came accross as having no clue. I think she could do a great job someday in senior government positions but she has a lot of studying to do to learn the intracacies of the worls.

Palin: small-time and totally unfit for national office. The urban centers are a small geographic extent of the nation, but they have the majority of people, and Palin's disdain for them is obvious and odious. We've tried the 'aw-shucks' mentality for the last 30 years; as a result we're completely floundering as a nation, trying to recuperate from end-stage reaganomics. The conservative mindset of theism, absolutism, anti-intellectualism, anti-science and knee-jerk, adolescent Faux News/Rush adherence is philosophically bankrupt, and utterly inappropriate for our nation in the 21st Century. Palin represents that portion of the nation that will all-too-willingly surrender their own best interests to cute colloquialisms and regional twang, if it's sold to them as nationalistic authenticity. Blech.

I sure would like to hear "one of us" please explain intelligently exactly what plan they would like to put forth to fix the economy and exactly how that would work. Its on thing to think your best interests are protected by an individual, and its another to know that the greater good requires sacrifices that are uncommonly uncomfortable for the status quo. Really, I'd love to hear "one of us" speak intelligently and enlightenedly, really.

I see the Obama astroturfers are hard at work today, planting seeds of ignorance. Which Presidential candidate and current Community Organizer in chief took thousands from AIG and other financial companies? What party controlled Congress the last two years and ignored warning after warning about Fannie/Freddie? Which party clings to this global warming nonsense and refuses to drill and reap the benefits of jobs, wealth and tax revenue. Ask Texans how much the Barnett Shale has helped them weather the Democrat recession. Get the ignorant elitists and 60s radicals out of Washington and let Sarah clean out all the tax cheats so heavily represented among Washington Dhimmirats.

Just WHAT is it that liberals hate SOoooo much about GOVERNOR Palin? Is it her surplus funds in the state coffers? Her strong stance AGAINST wanton abortion that has killed 8 million unborn babies since Roe v. Wade? Is it her savvy business sense that trumps an ivy league degree with her hard earned college years spent at five diverse colleges? Is it her moxy at taking on local politicians who proved to be run of the mill greedy cronies and crooks? Is it her experience running a small business or that fact that business involved the gathering of lowly fish instead of hocking stocks on the floor of the N.Y.S.E.??? Hmmmm, such a quandry for sure. Perhaps in 2012 it will help you all to realize the honorable GOVERNOR Sarah Palin is NOT the comedian Tina Fey! Go Sarah 2012!!

Great article. I've been a lifelong democrat and a self-confessed liberal - pro-choice etc. However after doing far too much reading and research (my leg was broken during the primary stage), I developed a loathing for B.O. Strangely when looking at all of McCain's possible choices, I was pulling for Palin but never expecting it. I was on vacation in Corsica when I saw the headlines that she'd been chosen and was thrilled. Never never did I expect to see such united venom and spite directed at one single individual. Never have I seen such vicious contempt and instant dismissal and premeditated prejudgment towards a politican. I used to associate that kind of nastiness solely with the far right. Now I see I was wrong. Nothing brings this home more than B.O.'s nasty campaign against Rush Limbaugh. I've never listened to Rush and I'm sure I wouldn't like him. But I expect my president to be above that kind of fray. B.O. is a poser. Wake me up when it's over.

Palin et al would never have restored the reputation of the US abroad. As an Irishman with very strong US connections (my grandfather was a GI from Wisconsin, stationed here during WW2) the 8 years of Bush were one long dark nightmare. After a few short weeks of the Obama administration I am once again proud to espouse my American links. Opinions in the rest of the world matter guys, and Bush totally destroyed US credibility. I can't see that Palin would have restored it.

Good Evening All, Quite an impressive comment trail on this article, almost balanced, not to much of an echo chamber with some excellent observations. As a Palin supporter and a member of that slice of America that has been characterized as rural at best and Jacksonian at worst, I enjoy reading the interplay between our opposing camps that articles like this produce. It helps me to orient myself on the deep and lasting divide that exists between the Urban Statists who absolutely depend on goverment and the those of us who rarely see any of it's representatives or suffer directly from their kind assistance. As this weeks melodrama continues to play out and then give way to next weeks edition, the thirst for real change will continue. Let us hope that 2010 ushers in a shot at geniune change and that our people have another opportunity to decide. And Act.

Albert Einstein defined "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." I think that is the perfect definition of the democrat party and liberalism. If there were any doubts about that assertion, they were dispelled after reading the comments by liberals on this excellent article. It is also clear that these commenters are a product of our 'educational' system...devoid of critical thinking, original thought, basic English skills, a knowledge of history, and the inability to debate without resorting to the playground political tactic of calling your opponents names. After President Obama finishes his meltdown, the grown ups will once again take the reins and guide the republic back to being "A Shining City On A Hill" instead of the soup kitchen/ghetto that the left is intent on creating.

that's right, its Obama's fault that I lost my job in August and that the economy is in the mess it is in....nothing to do with the "legacy" left by the 8 years of Republican leadership.....maybe if I keep saying it I will start to believe this rubbish and Sarah Palin will start to look like a better choice. My concern remains, that if you can't control your minor children, how do you expect me to think you can run our country. Let's face it, they are all just people trying to the best they can with what they have to work with. Give him a chance to work his way into the job and out of the mess he inherited. Open you minds to allow you to see that we aren't a country of extremes, we all want to have jobs, homes and some security that when we are sick or retire we will have money to cover our expenses. God bless all of us, we need it!

Eventhough Sarah is from Alaska, she too has political realities. She compromises when she has to and picks her battles pretty well. She wins most of them. Somehow I feel that the level of corruption in Washington would have been mitigated by her presence...over time. They can call her stupid all they want. They just can't call her a freakin' flat-out liar like most of the Neo-Lib socialists there. The selective outrage this week is very troubling. The very people who knew about this AIG bonus plan, then changed the legislation to let it happen, are th same people yelling the loudest! I feel that at least Sarah tells the truth about things.

CJ: So you think that if we "open our minds to Obama" that he will give us jobs and money? The reason I am so opposed to Obama is not because he made some dumb mistakes at the beginning of his presidency. If that's all it was, I could be patient. Obama is not making simple, dumb mistakes. He is implementing a dangerous philosophy that will change our country in a ruinous way. Getting rid of capitalism and instilling socialism is dangerously wrong for the USA. It has failed elsewhere. In fact, even Russia's Putin recently told Obama not to go the socialist route. I will not open my mind to Obama, and I hate to break this bad news to you, but Obama will not give you money or jobs. When you say that we are not a country of extremes, surely you notice how extreme Obama is. If you haven't noticed, start looking - and close your mind to it!

Palin's commitment to good governance is the real thing. It's why she's home minding the store. She get's it. If and when she decides to run in 2012, it will be on her terms. For now, she knows what must come first and last--- working her tail off for the people of Alaska through good times and bad. Tough political skin and genuine charisma aside, this is a woman who knows how to focus. I don't see eye to eye with her on every issue, but it's her governing focus that gives me at least one good reason to begin looking at her vision for the country.

Wow. A brilliant defense of Palin and well-placed lance through the heart of Palin-skeptic arguments. Let us hope out of the ashes of newspapers nationwide a new journalism arises, one more concerned with facts and substance than fashion and appearances. But let's not be too optimistic...

As I recall, Sarah's '08 campaign consisted of pushing McCain's legislative agenda of "Drill, baby, drill" and cutting everything but defence out of the federal budget. I don't recall what their plan for fixing the economy was. Oh yeah... cut corporate taxes.

You are trying too hard Chill - if this presidency will fail it will do it by itself with no help from you. You will NEVER advance your career by useless sensationalism and pandering. Instead - wait 6, 12, 18, 24 months and then make grand proclamations. Guess what - if 6,8, 12, 24 months after you speak what you say comes true - you will be a God and Obama will be in the toilet. Do NOT jump the gun - you will be like every other simple minded " want to quickly prove Obama wrong to justify a lifetime of hate" people. Not that I care what happens to you. Idiot.

Bitter much? I don't believe that McCain and Palin would have been able to stop the stock market from sliding either. No, I don't think Obama has made the right decision every time, but he will be just fine. This man has incredible drive and work ethic (which is more than you can say about Bush.) He will actually learn from his mistakes and we can expect that the best is yet to come. Put aside your partisan politics and give some honest, constructive criticism instead of this useless drivel.

As a Democrat, I sincerely hope that Palin runs in 2012. Michael Steele is funny, but he's not "Sarah Palin" funny. Palin has repeatedly demonstrated that she is a moron, with a hillbilly, PWT family. Unfortunately for the democrats, Huckabee, Pawlenty, Sanford, Romney, and the repube machine (who actually want to try to have a shot at winning) will devour her before she gets the chance to amuse us all, you know, just prior to President Obama's re-election in 2012. Nonetheless, your article was hilarious!

When will we stop putting a premium on academic accumen and value actual accomplishments? There are doers and their are thinkers. Obama is a thinker. He thinks. He does not do. Palin is a doer. If it needs to be done, she will do it. If you are looking for a leader to follow, would you rather follow a thinker or a doer? To me, it's as simple as that.

What a waste of paper, internet space and my time. While you've (correctly) highlighted the recent missteps of the current administration (of which i'm no big fan), you've not offered a shred of insight how Palin might've done differently, or importantly, better other than suggesting she will predicated on the incredulous "she's one of us" theory. How typical. Wasn't that one of the key reasons Bush was elected into his first term (with the second term largely helped by fear mongering in connection with a baseless war). The only good this sad excuse of journalistic exercise will be I'll be more aware not to read any more of your pointless drivel in the future. At least Karl Rove offers more substantive arguments (albeit often grossly biased).

Obama, obviously even the most dense Obama supporter can see what a joke he is.He has never run a Dairy Queen.Much less a national office. He is a embarrassment to America.Accept it, it's true. When he is 60 years old he will still be blaming Bush for his problems as president.Palin could have handled our problems with out a tele-prompter. Sambo is a good candidate for president of Zimbabwee not the U.S.

No doubt by now Palin would have taken a call from the British Prime Minister only to learn it was a call from Rush Limbaugh. She would have learned that the capital of Russia could not be seen from her house and she would have discovered that she could not spend goverment funds on personal ithems as she has done in Alaska.

Respomnding to Flores de la Hoz: The question is not whether I'd prefer Palin to some hypothetical mythical) wizard of smart playing geo-political chess with Chine and Russia. Anyone fails when compared to an ideal. The actual counterpart in this case is 'Slow Joe' Biden, who despite his self-proclaimed high-IQ, makes Palin look like a Mensa. I can only imagine the ridicule that would have been heaped upon Gov. Palin if she had told a man in wheelchair to 'stand up Chuck!'.

"rban: "So you really think Palin, the woman who believes that Africa is a country..." Have you seen a tape of her saying this? Do we know the name of the person who claimed this? Do we know what she actually said? No. But you choose to believe this about her. Now, do you believe Obama thinks that there are 57 states, Patton liberated Poland, or that 'fallen heroes' were sitting in the audience of a Memorial Day event? Even though these gaffes *are* all on tape? You're engaging in selective stupidity.

How does a person as stupid as Noemie have a job? That's my question. Palin was/is a joke, and it was practically treason for McCain to put her on the ballot. But go ahead, if you want to ensure Democrat dominance for the next 8 years keep pushing Palin, you blithering beknighted idiot.

I am most definitely not a supporter of Governor Palin. However I will support any of her supporters in the opinion that what was done to her in the press was an utter disgrace. The silence of my fellow feminists in the media was even more disgraceful. What was allowed to be done to Palin for the cause of Obama did more damage to feminist ideals then any conservative politician, columnist, judge etc.... could have ever done. Shame on us.

Let Gov. Palin sit back and allow time to do the work of revealing the truth (aided by the bumbling B. Hussein). BO's doing a fabulous job of proving his inadequacies. Give him four years to continue to bury himself even further than he already has in these scant 60 days, and down the road Gov. Palin could be considered, by comparison, the savior BO (and the press) passed himself off to be. Oh, and BTW, do you think BO will return the $100,000 HE received from AIG?

Mar 19, 2009

What drivel. S.P. does not need her name resurrected in some sort of fantasy about the loser from Alaska if she had won and McCain had died so she could take over. Her pathetic attempts at pretending she knew anything about what was going on outside the borders of Alaska are best left swept under the carpet. The mistakes you delineate are tiny little motes of dust on the international scene that you are trying to make a mountain out of. How did you get your journalist license? Your article is certainly doing a lot for our country. You want a serious topic? How about doing something about the Republican war machine and its hoodwinking the American people into world economic destruction. What were you focusing on? Bush's nose hairs?

asah34na

Mar 19, 2009

Noemie - Your article nails the essence of Sarah Palin - energizer of people who had lost interest in the political arena years ago. Her enhthusiasm and honesty electrified many along the campaign trail. Witness the humungous crowds who gathered just to hear her speak. Those folks who voted for The Messiah can now see the effects of a rhetorical genius and elite snob who responds well to a teleprompter - the gradual destruction of the liberties and freedom of this great country. Governor Palin may not have a degree from one of the esteemed institutions of higher learning; but, her knowledge of managing an executive office and making appropriate judgements - putting the people first - is unmatched. Her integrity and honesty are most refreshing in a climate of total corruption and posturing.

Lee

Mar 19, 2009

Palin had and has far more executive experience than Obama and it's showing. Obama is an amateur and is running our country into the ground. Two more years! Be ready! The non violent conservative revolution has started-Thanks Obama

Republicans new from the onset that Obama had no experience, What is the surprise? He speaks well, that does not make a President!!!!

CJ

Mar 20, 2009

Hmmm...if Sarah Palin has SO MUCH support and would be such a great leader of our contry, how did she lose the election for the Republicans? And she wasn't running against Obama, she was running as the Vice President....or have you already pronounced John McCain dead?

I am a democrat but I was appalled by the fact that my party would put up a novice who had done nothing to be president. I thought that kind of base american idol view of the office of the president was reserved for the republican party (when they put up George Bush another candidate who had no accomplishments to his name). I was wrong. I don't agree with Sarah Palin on abortion but I respect her decision to live her beliefs and make her own personal decisions). The one thing I did see (because I did examine her record) was an ability to get things done even as mayor of Wasilla. In the 8 years that Obama served in the Illinois senate, not one thing was done to improve his district. Not one hopey, changey, empower your self, thing was done. And yet that is what our glorious media let him run on. In the age of TV and pop culture we elect empty suits. Our founding fathers could not have foreseen this when they made the qualifications for the office so lax.

johnt

Mar 20, 2009

Well it seems the CBO has revised estimates of this year's deficit from a modest $1.75 trillion to an ever so slightly larger $2.6 trillion. Gone are the days of dangerous $300-400 billion deficits, we've arrived at helpful amounts six time greater. Pardon me, I'm trying to think like a liberal. Do any of you liberal apes realize that you're being raped financially ? Does it matter as long as the Administration and media are throwing you hate objects to focus on, Limbaugh, AIG execs, etc? And will it dawn on you that Obama and the rest of the Democrats have utter contempt for you, which of course is as it should be.

rb

Mar 20, 2009

Let's face it, Obama is an idiot and the fact he was elected is scary, even if the MSLSD crowd can't deal with it. Face it, if the Dems want to be the party of dumb, they have their man

Rban: //"So you really think Palin, the woman who believes that Africa is a country, would be better suited to run the United States of America and deal with the federal deficit that was incidentally CREATED BY SO-CALLED 'FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE' REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES."//" The Democrats have CONTINUED driving this country into debt over the last 2 years. They just gave nearly $200 billion dollars to a bank, LOADED with crooked execs and told them that they could pay themselves fat bonuses (then act shocked, when they actually do so). All of which was orchestrated by a guy, who got popped for tax fraud, along with (Lord know how many) others in the Obama administration. And, you're lecturing us on how stupid Sarah Palin is? PLEASE!!!!!

lrc

Mar 20, 2009

Are you joking? You are, you're joking. Because we didn't vote in Obama for looking like a Vogue model and being glib - we voted him in because HE IS A PROFESSOR OF CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, who has, in under 60 days, begun to undo the legal culster#$%^ left behind by the Bush administration. If you really think a beauty queen who thinks rape victims should pay for their own exam kits could do better, why don't you move to Alaska and see how that whole no stimulus money thing works out for you.

What is it with Americans and this bizarre worship of the ordinary. What ever happened to the pursuit of excellence? Don't you WANT the people who run the country to be better than you? Second guessing, a cheap rhetorical trick. Anybody can do it. What if McCain had died in office, thus handing the nuclear button to an apocolypse-worshipping religious extremist?

The Dems HAD to win this election because of McCain had won, it would have been 12 years before the Dems would have got another look in (1 term of McCain and 2 of Palin). Mailman
