Drew Nannis: AARP: Setting the record straight

By: Drew Nannis

August 5, 2009

Editor's note: This oped is in response to Mark Tapscott's July 30 column entitled "Obamacare could kill AARP."

And the award goes toÉMark Tapscott for most dramatic editorial. Too bad the millions of Americans without health care or who are struggling to pay for their care will likely not be applauding.

The truth is, and especially in Washington, you just can't please all of the people all of the time. And yes, this is a variation on a phrase often attributed to Republican President Abraham Lincoln, so perhaps AARP will be accused of siding with a particular political party (although Tapscott referred to us as "liberal") but that's just the way it is in this town.

Unfortunately, many people behind the deceptive machines who are working to stop health care reform are trying to vary this memorable phrase even further, working around the clock to "fool all of the people all of the time". They are stopping at nothing to spread myths about health care reform and employ scare tactics to deceive the masses.

For the good of the millions Americans who are suffering daily to make ends meet, who wrongly are denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions or who are spending exorbitant amounts of money on prescription drugs - we will clarify a few things.

AARP is fighting everyday for a solution that improves health care. We have been working with leaders from both sides of the aisle for many, many months, and we will continue to do so. The town hall we hosted this week with President Obama was another in a series that have featured Democrats and Republicans.

We're not interested in political gamesmanship, but in the best solutions - regardless of whether they come from Democrats or Republicans. Members on both sides of the aisle agree that the status quo is unacceptable. We're glad to see progress, and we want to maintain the momentum on behalf of our members.

The final health care reform package will include a mix of ideas from both parties and both houses of Congress.

At the end of the day, the standard that AARP will use to judge the legislation is simple:

Will this legislation improve our health care system and provide peace of mind to our members and their families?

On behalf of our 40 million members, AARP has been working with both Republicans and Democrats for the last two years to build political support to fix our broken health care system.

We support the overall efforts to pass a health care reform package this year - and we have specifically endorsed efforts to close the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap, or doughnut hole.

Also, we endorsed the bi-partisan "Medicare Transitional Care Act," sponsored by Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Charles Boustany (R-LA); as well as Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Susan Collins (R-ME).

Such a benefit can help save some of the estimated $17 billion Medicare spends each year on preventable hospital readmissions and significantly reduce the 20 percent of people in Medicare who are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of their first visit.

And on one of the larger issues, let us be clear: AARP would fight - with everything we've got - any attempt to prevent a doctor or hospital from giving the best possible care to their patients.

We will continue to push to make sure any health care reform package out of Washington includes specific measures to help our members and their families - and we won't apologize for doing so.

The millions of people impacted by high drug costs and those that can't get adequate health insurance because of age or a pre-existing condition need help now. Waiting will not lower costs, increase access or improve quality.

Few understand the enormous challenge of this task better than AARP. We have been working to reform health care for more than 50 years and we know this is difficult. But Congress needs to get this done this year. American families simply cannot afford Washington's stalemate any longer.

The time to improve health care and lower costs to individuals, businesses and government is now! The longer we wait, the more expensive it will become for all of us.

But despite all of our efforts, myths about health care reform continue to run rampant, and we will continue - on behalf of all Americans, to fight to make affordable health care a reality. This includes Mr. Tapscott's latest attempt to keep the status quo.

Drew Nannis is a vice president of AARP.

I will definitely never join the AARP membership as it is obvious you do not care about the American people.

If we are not sure if Obama is legally President, why talk about health care? NO BIRTH CERTIFICATE = NOT PRESIDENT! Republicans are FACT BASED. We just want to see a birth certificate. Otherwise, this talk about health care might as well stop. At least Republicans know this is a NATION OF LAWS!

My husband (55) and myself (48) will not be interested in anything AARP has to offer.

how about you read the bill and explain it line by line to your members, than take a poll and see what they think!

Aug 5, 2009

I will not be renewing my 17 year old AARP membership. I have read the proposed health care reform bill and although I'm not a lawyer I realize that as a senior my health care will be marginalized. Where do you thinkthe medical community is going to get the resourses to treat 50 million more people without more doctors, nurses and facilities? All I see is rationing with seniors left out in the cold. Canada and the UK are perfect examples. I travel a lot and talk to people of those countries and they envy our health care.

We watched the Fox Glenn Beck TV show yesterday & were surprised how poorly informed & naive the president of AARP appeared. We do not feel that AARP is inadequately informed of the ramifications of what is being proposed for seniors. We have always felt that AARP had our best interest at heart but we do now feel we have been deserted & will suffer severe consequences if this legislation is passed. As a RN who has worked in Utilization Management in an acute care facility I realize healthcare reform is necessary but the legislation being proposed is much worse than what we now have. PLEASE study what is being offered before supporting what is being suggested. Thank you

Please correct typo. Should read"We do not feel AARP is ADEQUATELY informed". Thanks

AARP is no longer an independent organization. From the top down they support "progressive" ideas that will bankrupt the coutry but not AARP. Seems AARP is making a lot of money reselling insurance. You can actually buy it cheaper directly from the company they sell it through. This is all about AARP making money and supporting progressive policy that would have our founding fathers turning over in their graves. There are much better ideas to silve the health care problem without government takeover.

It's a shame (sham?) that AARP has NOT totally come out against this "Healthcare" plan which is obviously not doing one thing to help the "members" (sheep)of their organization.

This all can be traced back to the AARP's support of Obama for president with NO input from the members. You can clearly see by the leadership that the backing of a complete leftist as a presidential candidate haas put them in direct opposition to those they CLAIM to represent. I for one, have not heard one statement from the AARP that maks any sense.. Simply put they are too invested in this administration and unwilling to admit to their error in backing these socialists.

I can only come to the conclusion that to survive the AARP needs to clean house and LISTEN to their members instead of deciding for them...Congress may want to take the same advice.

What a bunch of ballyhoo by Drew Nannis.
Obviously he hasn't read the ObamaCare bill. If this bill is so wonderful why doesn't Congress want if for themselves and their families??? This bill is toxic . . .just say No to ObamaCare, as you would say No to Drugs. AARP should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

My renewal notice will be going back today with the cards cut in half. I will not support an organization that has thrown it's members under the bus. Shame on the AARP administration. Read the bill then stop lying to us. This is the worst thing that could happen to Senior Citizens. We are not as stupid as you would like us to be.

Betty

Aug 5, 2009

I can't believe that AARP is really going to leave their membership "high and dry." My spouse nor I will renew our membership along with hundreds of thousands. You should be ashamed of yourself--trying to make us think you are working in our best interest. We might be called senior citizens--but we are neither stupid or out of contact with reality. Too bad you haven't learned from the very people you supposedly were to care about.

One of the more satisfying decisions that I made about thirty years ago was to shred every piece of mail from the AARP before opening.
Something that I have never regretted!
Since then, I have successfully convinced nearly all of my relatives that the AARP was an enemy organization.
If a guy keeps trying, they eventually get one right.

Drew, you are a liar. I'm sure that you, too, received the "talking points" memo from Queen Nancy on health care. The problem for you is that Americans, young and old, can read and write. And, we can certainly identify charletans like you.

Aug 5, 2009

Loretta - Thanks for your thoughtful comment; this campaign has been rife with misunderstanding and misstatements. Your commitment to helping others as an RN should be applauded, and as you point out health care reform is necessary The cost of the status quo is too high – and you’d know better than most. AARP has read the bill and we’re working hard to make sure you know what’s in it, including: Decreases the cost of your prescription drugs. Makes insurance more affordable for people 50-64 years old. And, maybe most important, no one – not the government, not an insurance company, no one – gets between you and your doctor. AARP won’t ever support a bill that does that. Let’s keep the dialogue going.

Drew,

Nice job talking down to Ms. Whiteside. You exhibit the same elitist attitude as the administration you support. "Thanks for you comments, it's just a shame you can't understand what we are saying." Have you ever seen "Logan's Run." That's where this criminal piece of legislation leads.

cut the aarp cards

Aug 5, 2009

We have been members of aarp, but the aarp cards will be CUT and never will we renew our membership. The aarp we used to hear from has changed when YOU ALL CAME OUT FOR obama last year. You were so biased that it made me sick. And you are getting worse. READ THE BILL HR3200 == socialized health care plan --obamacare will destroy the health care we have.
Did you notice I only deliberatly use the little "o" and "aarp" in this comment. The two of you are not big enough to use a CAPITAL letter.
You have forgotten the members! therefore we won't be members anymore.

AARP is in the tank for Obama. The best thing that I do is to mail back all of the applications they send me that are postage paid by AARP with a "NO THANKS" written across the front of the form. AARP has to pay the postage to get a rejection back from me.

Average American

Aug 6, 2009

How stupid do you think we are? We are not "an angry mob" or "GOP shills" or mis-informed geezers. We KNOW that AARP is in the tank with the Democratic party & Obama. So spare us the PR job about how you're not partisan and that you're watching out for 'the little guy'. Like all Democratic power-players, you're astronomically wealthy, you're a huge lobbyist, you're a big business and masterfully portray yourself like the 'good guy'.
Our entire family has opted out of everything 'AARP'. Bye-bye.

I am to join AARP next year, but no thanks. I have decided to start a new health program for the experienced citizens called NAARP. New American Association of Reitred Persons. Information will follow.

Aug 6, 2009

I think folks would read your words with a whole lot more belief in what you say were the AARP not so VERY clearly in bed with the DNC and the Obama Administration. Sorry, dude, but folks are on to you guys and all your sweet words about how you're working to help the little guy just won't fly. Now, go on back to your DNC/Obama bosses and let them know once again we did not fall for the BS. Thanks but no thanks.

Mad Monica

Aug 6, 2009

Oh, and for the record, I don't even know where to buy Brooks Brothers clothes, nor am I part of anything involving astro turf. I'm just a woman who is sick of the lies, the double talk and the bait and switch. And if you ask me, the AARP and all those who have fallen in goose step with this president and his cronies should be ashamed of themselves. Never in history has an administration been so determined to go AGAINST the will of the people. Perhaps that's why they need the names of those who don't agree ... it's easier to shut 'em up that way.

Prove It

Aug 6, 2009

Okay Drew you say that AARP will not support a bill that will harm seniors.
Well then I want AARP to come out and state that they will not support a bill that gives benefits to those in the U.S. illegally. COME ON DREW AND AARP.
SHOW US HOW MUCH NYOU CARE ABOUT US U.S. SENIORS!!

Aug 7, 2009

Please add my wife and me to the list that WILL NOT renew membership to AARP. AARP has become a shill for the far left, constantly espousing their policies without any debate or thought.

Drew nannis is being paid to pull the wool over the sheeps eyes, just like pelosi. You will know someone by their actions, not by hollow words. Drew, If you are truly concerned for your customers, I suggest you step down or dontate your pay check to charity....

John Sarto

Aug 7, 2009

How the uninformed attack those that actually know...Keep up the good work! We need Health Care reform and the idiots that listen to Beck, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and the entire Right Wing fringe radidicals are only that much dumber. How can you be so opposed to changing the source of so many problems in this country today.

John Sarto

Aug 7, 2009

And, I'll bet most of the people that are commenting are looking forward to or are already on Medicare, a Government run program that is by far more efficient than any insurance programs!!!

Patrick the Patriot

Aug 7, 2009

Funny how John Sarto claims to know more about the health care reform package that the politicians haven't even presented yet. John, you sound like you would make a great Canadian, so I suggest that you go be a citizen of their socialism, and tell them how well informed you are about things that you know nothing about. This is the problem folks, Obama's blind followers that want to make people think that they know whats best for everyone, and don't you dare show dissent!!!!!

Jay

Aug 8, 2009

Add 40 million more with no increase in doctors or medical facilities and state that this will not negatively effect Senior Care, not possible. This whole thing is a plan by Obama to take from the haves and give to the have nots at the expense of the haves.

Annie

Aug 9, 2009

AARP membership has been shrinking daily because of their endorsement of Obamacare. AARP is no longer an advocate for the seniors, assuming they ever were. SHAME ON THEM!

Annie

Aug 9, 2009

Additionally I saw Drew Nannis on Fox with Megyn Kelly. Drew was put on the spot and attempted to toy with a much broghter Megyn. She caught on to his double talking....he and the rest of the AARP reads the same OBAMA playbook to try to fool the Americans.
Drew - Read the bill then respond honestly.

Rog

Aug 12, 2009

If AARP was not supporting the garbage coming out of the Congress, why were they in such a hurry to go around the country praising it. ONLY after its members raised cane and resigned their memberships in force, did AARP start backtracking. Only after the public started to finally be heard, did they object to Obama saying he had the support of AARP.
As far as I am concerned they care only for themselves and not their members. I myself resigned my membership a week ago.

I quit the AARP years ago when it became evident to me that they are a left-wing shill. An organization for retired people should be apolitical or should not exist at all.

Jonboy

Aug 20, 2009

I can't believe I have been a member of AARP for 10 years and not realized I have been supporting a left wing organization. I apologize to the other seniors in the country and will correct the error promptly. Anybody else feel duped by dummies?
