Maybe 'brilliant' isn't exactly the right word for Obama

By: Douglas MacKinnon
-
April 14, 2009

“He’s brilliant,” said Bill O’Reilly of Fox News.
“He’s brilliant,” say most members of the mainstream media and basically all democrats.
Who are they speaking of? President Barack Obama, of course. With the already legendary intellect, unrivaled understanding of any situation - - domestic or global -- and omnipotency being assigned to our 44th President, it’s almost sacrilege to even ask the question.
Recently, while riding on a train with an older and admittedly liberal couple from New York, I mentioned Obama. Instantly, the reaction from both was, “He’s brilliant.”
When I asked the couple what made Obama “brilliant,” they answered “because he’s articulate and went to Harvard.” Okay.  I guess that’s one measurement. I then asked them if they knew Obama’s SAT scores, or his GPA from Occidental College or Columbia University? They said they did not but assured me they had to be high.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines brilliant as: “Marked by unusual and impressive intellectual acuteness.” For all I know, Obama meets or exceeds this definition. For far too many members of the media however, the brilliance of a politician is based solely on how far left he or she leans. The more liberal, the more brilliant.
A glaring example of this unethical rating system can be found in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. In both elections, many in the mainstream media ascribed great intellectual prowess to Vice President Al Gore in 2000 and then to Senator John Kerry in 2004.
All the while painting first Gov. George W. Bush and then President George W. Bush as outright dumb or worse. Then the facts came out. It turns out that Bush had equal and better grades then both liberal democrats while an undergraduate in college.
Did Obama have a higher GPA as an undergraduate than Bush? Does a higher GPA or 800’s on the SAT mean you will make a better president? I don’t think so, but many on the left falsely used the intellectual argument against Bush and Ronald Reagan before him.
To go back to the rationale offered by the couple from New York regarding the brilliance of Obama -- that being that he’s “articulate” and “went to Harvard.” As one who did some low-level writing for two presidents, I could certainly make the argument that Obama’s heavy reliance on teleprompters helps him to come across as more articulate.
With regard to Harvard, that begs a very important question. A question that Attorney General Eric Holder may approve of as he said we were a nation of “cowards” for not discussing race relations in a more open manner.
That question being, did Obama get into Harvard based academic qualifications or because of Affirmative Action? As the left strongly believes in affirmative action, surely they will not object to this question.
Still not 100 days into the Obama presidency and we literally can’t go one day without someone on network or cable television telling us of the “brilliance” of our new president. Leaving the media bias aside, what makes a president “brilliant?”
Does bowing before the Saudi king make one brilliant? Does praising Turkey’s AKP party and pushing -- against the strong opposition of Europe -- for the admission of Turkey into the EU make one brilliant?
Does proposing a $3.6 trillion budget that will create a deficit this year of $1.8 trillion make one brilliant? Does adding -- according to the Congressional Budget Office -- $9.3 trillion to our debt from 2009 to 2019 make one brilliant? Does allowing your Secretary of Education to bury a positive study on the value of school vouchers make one brilliant?
Obama may be brilliant. He may be the most intelligent president to ever occupy the Oval Office. I would just like somebody to tell me what makes him so.

I can't believe your hate for this President. See you at the KKK Rally, opps, I mean the Tea Party. Maybe compared to Bush he is brilliant. The President did a great job on the hostage situation. I would not be surprised if you wanted the Captain to be killed.

Apr 14, 2009

GWS, I do not see "hate" in any part of what Mr MacKinnon wrote. As far as the hostage situation, the President did what he should have done: not micromanage it but let knowledgeable people on the scene handle it as it evolved. I applaud him for that. This strategy would serve him quite satisfactorally in other areas as well.

GWS, you need help man! Where is your sense of values, of right and wrong? Everyone respects what President Obama did in this situation. No need to go down to the KKK gutter because the writer feels differently than you do about the President. Where does wanting "...the Captain to be killed" come from? Why say that? You need help.

Good heavens - someone who gets it. For those of you who are just coming out of the media-induced Obama-Coma, go watch the Richard Epstein interview by Peter Robinson, on Uncommon Knowledge. Epstein is a professor of law at U of Chicago, and his observations on the "brilliance" of Obama are hilarious. Asked if he would have offered Obama tenure as a law professor at Chicago, Epstein literally laughs out loud.

If the MSM (MSDNC, NY Times, etc...) bothered to report the tripe that came out of the Teleprompter-in-chief's mouth on a daily basis, I don't think we'd be hearing how brilliant this extremely limited president is. And good questions... ...where are his academic records? Funny... Seems it's hard to find them.

GWS is typical of the black leftist victim mentality in this country. In his tortured mind, anyone who questions a black person must be expressing hate and is associated with the KKK. GWS - you're a whiny sissy, and you lack the courage to have an intelligent discussion - even anonymously - about a black man. You obviously don't believe that you possess the intellectual skill to defend Obama. I suspect that you also fear MacKinnon has it exactly right. And you are probably right on both counts.

You've just got to love the simpleton rants of "Liberal=Brilliant!, Conservative=Ignoramus!" rants from people like GWS. We'll simply have to deal with these fearful small-minded Democrat tools for the next few years, hoping we can reverse all the damage he does to this country...

Fantastic article! I can't believe people believe that Obama is "brilliant" simply because he went to Harvard. From what I have seen of Obama's lack of understanding of economics, science, foreign policy, ethics and the Constitution, he is definitely not brilliant. In fact, he should ask Columbia and Harvard for his money back!

Brilliant not the right word for McKinnen either

Obviously Obama did not achieve stellar grades in college, else he would have released his grades, as other candidates have done. Even if his grades had been "average" they would not have supported the myth of Obama as "lightworker", or "messiah"...

Apr 14, 2009

His brilliance is in formulating words, tone, and facial expressions in combination so as to project the coolest and most reasonable-sounding manner as possible, regardless of what he says. The public thinks he's brilliant because he looks and sounds brilliant. We are idiots for electing him. We will spend more time researching what's in a box of cereal before we buy it than we did before deciding Barack was the One.

Obama may not be brilliant, but his teleprompter is a genius! What's the theorum about comparing people to Nazis in online discussions? Maybe we need to make a KKK one of the leftist trolls. Of course the only KKK Dragon I know of is Sen. Byrd (D). Stay classy trolls.

I totally agree. Look at his cabinet mis-picks. The idealogues in his second level choices. The faux pax everywhere...remember the DVD's to Gordon Brown. A monkey could have made better decisions. Apr 14, 2009

This guy is far from brilliant and he's not smarter than Bush! Bush didn't need a teleprompter half as much as this guy. Without practice or preperation he can barely speak an audible syllable. This is not hate because of his perceived race (remember, he's half white) as some losers here state. It's my observation of him. I dislike him because he is definitely a Marxist who wants one party rule and no one to question his decisions. He's got Homeland Security basically watching anyone who disagrees with this radical left wing nut group now running the country! I'm proud to be a target of Homeland Security! Let's see, we all know, or should know, that if The Big O's grades and test scores had been "brilliant," we would have gotten a gander at them long ago. Since he didn't release his transcripts from Occidental, I guess we can assume that he didn't have the grades to transfer to the Ivy League. We also don't know his GPA at Columbia but we do know that he graduated without honors of any kind, not even departmental honors (and this after he spent his two years plugging away in the library, or so he claims--those years are rather a mystery). That's generally not good enough for Harvard Law, unless there are "other factors" to be considered. He was, after all, articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.

Funny how the MSM dogged McCain until he produced his medical records and Hillary until she released her records from her stint as First Lady, but Obama's academic records remained sealed, his records from 8 years as an Illinois State Senator remain "lost", and his medical records still consist of one paragraph stating he is healthy. As for being accepted into Columbia and Harvard, affirmative action or admitted as a foreign exchange student?

PoodleSkirt

Apr 14, 2009

If Barack Obama was truly "brilliant," he would have no problem releasing his grades and thesis papers from Occidental, Columbia and Harvard. He has repeatedly declined to do so, which leads me to think that the only thing he's brilliant at is reading speeches written by others. He's certainly the smoothest teleprompter reader ever to occupy the Oval Office. I hardly think that makes him "brilliant."

Apr 15, 2009

Great article. As someone who saw the birth of Obama in Chicago politics I can tell you this much about our allegedly brilliant president. He wasn't always this good at speeches. If you have ever seen his early interviews or speeches you would hardly be impressed. What you see now is 10 years of prepping and polishing of this guy into the ultimate politician. He was created out of nothing for his current job. Give anyone a decade working with professional groomers and they would be called brilliant too! And too GWS: Yeah that was one hell of a sniper shot Obambi made! Your an Imbecile! Dear Leader is just another Illinois "Rob Blagojevich" Democrat! The difference is Obama hasn't been caught yet!!

Obama's an idiot!

Voters usually thrust brilliance on the folks they vote for--reflects their own brilliance--or so they think. But only until the romance is over. The hands that bestow the brilliance also take it away--What makes Bush brilliant? He knows he isn't brilliant. What makes Obama not so brilliant? He thinks he IS brilliant.

Apr 15, 2009

Outstanding observation and article. Had George Bush or Dan Quayle said they campaigned in "all 57 states," there wouldn't be a strong enough word for "idiot" in the English Dictionary to make the libs happy. I guess it is a sign of President Osama's brilliance though. I didn't know there were 57 states,an only thought there were 50. I guess Osama learned it at Harvard. I, unfortunately, only have a rural Arkansas education, and can never really begin to comprehend his brilliance. What a freakin' joke!

Sadly, I rank obama's brilliance right up there with Ted Kennedy. Their brilliance comes out of a can from a huge, hard working (and possibly really brilliant, if misguided) radical left wing staff. Left to their own devices (and brillance), without a prepared text and teleprompter, they're average, at best.

Gene

Apr 15, 2009

Great article...it is a question I've wondered myself. Especially since he has as many silly mistakes as Bush, they're just not well reported: '57 states' or 'I'm not sure what the word in Austrian is.' GWS and Maybe are great examples of the hate displayed by the left. If you disagree with Obama you are a racist? If you don't like high taxes you support the KKK? It's funny how people who talk about peace and love all the time are so filled with hatred.

Does talking about piracy and saying instead privacy make one brilliant? Does referring the the 57 United States make one brilliant? Does pronouncing the constellation Orion "Oreeon" make one brilliant? Does asking how one says a common expression in the Austrian language make one brilliant? Does being editor of the Harvard Review and not writing one single article make one brilliant? Does taking out repeated huge sums of home equity on lines of credit in order to pay ones bills while racking up credit card debts as well make one brilliant? Is admitting that lowering capital gains helps the economy more than raising taxes but stubbornly insisting that one doesn't care and will raise taxes anyway make one brilliant? Does serial lying make one brilliant?

"Dear Leader" and his MSM cohorts keep touting his presidency of the Harvard Law Review. He was president not Editor. Big Difference but when people hear president of Law Review they mistakenly think of the prestige of the EDITOR of the Law Review. President of the Law Review is the cheerleader position. Editor of the Law Review is equivalent to the quarterback who calls his own plays. The prez is fluff, the editor is substantiative. Just more smoke and mirrors with obama's resume. And if he is so smart, seems like he would be proud to release his impressive academic transcript. Whatcha hiding big boy?

Obama is a contrived politician promoted by the media and the left to change America into a socialist state. If he is as intellectually gifted as he claims, he would want to document his achievements, not seal his academic records, test scores and writings. He is inarticulate and unimpressive when he is without his twelve telepompters. When responding to an impromptu question,Obama strutters, stammers and becomes mute. His inaugural address was replete with cliches, platitudes, and borrowed phrases. The media found a unique opportunity to take an obscure, liberal politician who had no substantial voting record to analyze and make him a vehicle to enact a liberal agenda.Obama offers only one solution to any problem-----give trilions of taxpayers' money for social programs that the nation can not afford and leave generations of Americans with massive debt.

Obama would not only have benefitted from racial preferences but also because his father attended Harvard--which is not to say he may not also be brilliant; it's just that I prefer to assess his brilliance after he's been President.

Obama could release his college records like every other president had done. Maybe he can't because he's not so brilliant after all. Maybe he's an affirmative action poser? That would be my guess because he refuses to release his transcripts.

Thank you for speaking your mind and showing us another side of the story. Almost everyone seems lovestruck with Obama, based on practically nothing in the way of facts. How about waiting until he handles something brilliantly or does a "brilliant" presidential term before actually stating he's a genius as if that were an undeniable fact, just because he's young and went to Harvard.

Brilliance is as brilliance does. Perhaps his past brilliance would be easier to determine if we could see his college records (sealed) or his Harvard records (sealed) or his passport records (sealed) or his work record as a law professor (oops, also sealed). Or maybe concealing his past was the brilliance ...

I found your article to be brilliant! I agree with what you are saying. I believe what people should be saying about this man should go something like this, "This man has no feelings or compassion for the children of tomorrow." He is the best man Wall Street has ever had in the White House and the Federal Reserve just loves him. He was a great choice for the New World Order and by the time he is finished, no one in America will ever have to worry about freedom again. It will be a thing in the past.

Claire

Obama graduated in the top 10% of his class at Harvard--and that cannot possibly be put down to affirmative action, so yes, I would say that makes him extremely intelligent. And the fact that he is generally very articulate even when off teleprompter--as in the numerous interviews, town halls, debates, and press conferences he has done--would suggest that he is as intelligent as he appears to be. I dislike Bush intensely, but I don't think he's stupid--he seems perfectly bright, just almost bizarrely lacking in any kind of intellectual curiosity. But there are plenty of very smart conservatives. I would never want any of them in high office, but they do exist. :)
