Ken Blackwell: Obama will be the hand that feeds you

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was ordered out of the room by leading conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer, who is a medical doctor -- a rarity in the world of pundits.

Krauthammer said Palin's comments about "death panels" in Obamacare were not helpful in a serious debate on the government takeover of health care.

But then Dr. Krauthammer wrote that the result would only be a "gentle nudge" toward that hooded figure in the corner of the room, that grim fellow with the scythe.

Hmmm. Maybe we should invite Palin to come back in.

Krauthammer wrote before we saw the Department of Veterans Affairs dredge up a how-to book on end-of-life decision making for wounded vets. The book, "Your Life-Your Choices," had been deep-sixed by the Bush administration. It was reissued by the Obama administration. The book includes various "exercises" for vets that suggest more than a gentle nudge toward death. How about a sharp kick?

What will our veterans, wounded and quite possibly depressed, think when they are given a book that tells them about the possibilities of ending it all? And what kind of help is it to gently nudge them toward the Hemlock Society -- that practiced ender of all pain?

We need to focus more on what President Obama himself has said about ending lives. Now is when we really miss Tim Russert, who passed away suddenly in June 2008. In February of that year, Russert put an easy question to then-Sen. Obama during the Democrats' Cleveland debate. I remember it well.

RUSSERT: "Senator Obama, any statements or vote you'd like to take back?"

OBAMA: "Well, you know, when I first arrived in the Senate that first year, we had a situation surrounding Terri Schiavo. And I remember how we adjourned with a unanimous agreement that eventually allowed Congress to interject itself into that decision-making process of the families.

"It wasn't something I was comfortable with, but it was not something that I stood on the floor and stopped. And I think that was a mistake, and I think the American people understood that that was a mistake. And as a constitutional law professor, I knew better.

"And so that's an example I think of where inaction ..."

RUSSERT: "This is the young woman with the feeding tube ..."

OBAMA: "That's exactly right."

RUSSERT: "... and the family disagreed as to whether it should be removed or not."

OBAMA: "And I think that's an example of inaction, and sometimes that can be as costly as action."

Most of what Obama read about Terri Schiavo is not true. She was not dying. She was not comatose. She was not in a persistent vegetative state. She was severely brain-damaged.

She did require food and nutrition via intravenous tube. Her husband had, as they say, moved on. He argued with Terri's loving family. Mr. Schiavo wanted those tubes removed. Without food and water, Terri would die. So would we all.

Mr. Schiavo said Terri had told him she would "not want to live like that." Who would?

But the real question is: If you have to receive nutrition and hydration by tube, would you want someone to pull the tube?

As president, Obama has been knocking down the idea that he wants "to pull the plug" on your grandmother. Still, in the above quoted exchange with Russert, Obama said he regretted that he had not been more willing than 99 U.S. senators to hasten Terri Schiavo's death.

She should have been denied access to the federal courts, Obama said. She wasn't dying until they pulled her feeding tube. When she was dying, armed guards stationed at her bedside prevented family members from giving her cracked ice for her cracked and bleeding lips.

If "controlling costs" is the reason for the whole drive to nationalize health care, pulling feeding tubes from medically fragile people is an obvious "no-brainer." Under Obamacare, he or one of his minions will decide how much health care you get. When they decide you've had enough, you will be denied access to the courts. Obama's will be the hand that feeds you.

Greetings Comrade, or Heil Hitler, which should it be. This Korea COMBAT veteran didn't live in the cold mud for 276 days and night so you and Comrade Obama could destroy our country. One question: Of the 44 heroes that died in Afghanistan last month...How many could have been saved by a little "aggressive interogation"?
None you say? Prove it to their mamas!

Palin should never have been asked to leave the room. She should have been asked to lead it.

Mr. Blackwell, from your lips to God's ears. The rest of the (elected) GOP hasn't caught on yet -- or is too covetous of Palin's massive popularity.

Republicans in the beltway, pundit ones as well, left the room years ago.Thats the room of credibility.Obama calls Palin a liar in an indirect way.She responds with a brilliant Facebook post, you just have to read it.However not one media source reports it.Instead they keep firing you lie at us.Well Mr you lie has being in the beltway. Surrounded by a pack of liars for 8 years. All this bunch did was cause ridiculous spending, corruption, more debt, scandles, and gave America its new leftist spending nightmare.A democratic tri factah. Now you lie is begging everyone to unite around him. When they couldnt for 3 crucial votes(and had way more than enough votes)unite with Bush,to pass the banking reforms to stop the housing bubble.Special interests came first, such as campaine contributions. So my answer to you lie is this, not one dime to any republican incumbant or beltway pundits book.Unless they start speaking highly about the only one not lieing,Gov Palin.

When Sarah Palin goes on her book tour,(or Presidential debate) and she is asked about "death panels" this how to book vindicates her.

I admire Dr. Krauthammer, but he seems to be blinded by his admiration for Romney and the fact Gov. Palin doesn't have the educational credentials the Dr. feels is necessary. Sadly, he and the other beltway pundits really need to rent a bus and take a tour of America and meet real American's.

Thank you Mr. Blackwell. I'm glad to see that not all of the republican establishment has chosen to put the Sarah Palin "blinders" on and see that she is the future of the party, if there is to be a republican party!! People are tired of the doublespeak, the self aggrandizement, and the "go along to get along" attitude in Washington; Sarah is a fighter and she constantly demonstrates her heart is in the right place!! I was a skeptic of women's claim of a "glass-ceiling" until seeing the treatment Mrs. Palin has received since her nomination as McCain's VP, well let's just say I've had an epiphany; Gov Barbour of LA can stay in the room but not Sarah Palin - Give me a freaking break!!

"She did require food and nutrition via intravenous tube. Her husband had, as they say, moved on."

You mean how Newt,"moved on" after his wife was ill? Or how McCain "moved on" after his wife was crippled in a car accident while he was in Vietnam.

It's also funny how Sarah hides behind her keyboard when making these outlandish claims. Can she not stand up to questioning from a journalist?

The solution to this is obvious - we should privatize the military. You don't need to get a federal paycheck to be a patriot. In fact, private enterprise could provide far better defense than a government bureaucracy could.

Sarah is a fighter and she constantly demonstrates her heart is in the right place!!
===
Unfortunately, she incessantly demonstrates that her brain is not in the right place. She will be the death of the GOP. True conservatives will opt out rather than follow that fool, and the left will own every part of the country. Can you imagine 8 years of Obama followed by Hillary? With 63 senators? Real Americans come in a lot of shapes, colors and sizes, not to mention beliefs. Your "real american's" are just a subset, no better or worse than any other Americans.

Wow. Way to blatently lie Mr Blackwell. "Your Life-Your Choices," was not deep-sixed as you claim by the Bush administration, it was re-issued several times. The Obama administration simply re-issued the booklet with updates to language inside, like any other yearly publication.

Pre-counseling veteran's returning from war with debilitating life long injuries to take note of depression and suicidal thoughts is not "a sharp kick?" towards government murder. It is a booklet to help prevent suicide, and to prepare soldiers who's conditions are life-long to make smart educated decisions about any future care like being kept alive on a feeding tube, or DNR orders on the operating table.

You are lying to anyone who reads this article for partisan political purposes. You are doing our soldiers a great disservice by unfairly painting a document provided for their and their families benefit as a government death squad. You are intellectually bankrupt, and morally specious.

There's nothing quite as disgusting as this game over end of life issues. Getting counseling on how to protect yourself and ensure you own wishes and medical decisions is extremely important so as to EMPOWER patients to have control over their end of life care. The whole point is that countless people end up in situations where they have not made their wishes clear, which can be incredibly traumatic for their families. No one is trying to kill them off: they're trying to encourage people to think seriously about what they DO want, and make sure they've taken the steps to ensure it clearly.

Opportunistic harpies like Blackwell and Palin are using this issue to score cheap points at the expense of an actual and very serious issue. In the process they are going to leave a lot of people without clear directives, access to counseling, and so forth. It's absolutely disgusting.

I read the entire document "Your Life - Your Choices". I did not find anything objectionable in it. In fact, if Mrs. Schiavo had completed a living will, it would have eliminated the entire controversy surrounding her death. Moreover, let's assume for a minute that she wanted to stay on life support. Having a living will document would have clearly communicated that desire. Mr. Blackwell, I think your article and argument is what some might call "stretching the truth".

To quote the American Veteran Magazine:
""Your Life, Your Choices" is a document designed to help veterans draft a living will to determine how they will be cared for, should they be unable to make decisions for themselves. The document is very similar to documents offered by major health care providers across the U.S.

""Your Life, Your Choices" was continually circulated under the Bush Administration.

"That Obama reissued the book is a flat-out lie and the continued propagation of this message is yellow journalism. This kind of red herring distracts all of us from the important work that needs to be done. Veterans' organizations such as AMVETS are sworn to protect the best interests of our veterans, and arguing over this is a waste of our time."

Splendid One

Sep 15, 2009

I also just read the book. There's not a single word in it about veterans. Nor is it biased. The "swift kick" terminology Blackwell used is basically a lie. He should be ashamed. It just presents a lot of information and decisions so that people are better able to ensure that they get the kind of end of life care they want - in the event they become so ill that they are unable to communicate.

To Mr. Brewer: Sir, Thank You for your service to our country. However, as a Vietnam vet, I must question the source of your information as it is massively inaccurate. You, and other posters, are certainly entitled to your political belief but, at least, have the decency to write the truth to justify your statements!

Lie #1: the Bush administration did not "deep six" the book. A single VA district pulled it from their website. That was it. The book was in full use by the VA throughout the Bush administration.

Lie #2: that this book encourages soldiers to kill themselves. It does nothing of the sort. It discusses the many ways that people can feel about the end of their lives, ranging from a zealous desire to fight for every breath to the desire not to live under constant pain or other limitations. It encourages VA patients, like everyone else, to plan ahead for such circumstances so they don't end up incapacitated with their family fighting over what should happen.

I am appalled that Ken Blackwell repeatedly lies about important issues. This is a sad lack of leadership -- how stupid does the FRC think Americans are?
