The president is missing the long-term effects of his policies

By: Mitt Romney, OpEd Contributor
-
March 17, 2009

President Barack Obama’s actions on the economy have had the opposite effect than what was intended. His address to Congress was meant to restore confidence; instead, consumers retreated and investors sold.

His Treasury Secretary’s bank plan was meant to settle uncertainty; instead it added to it. Every speech, every interview, and every initiative has caused investors in America to recoil.
With consumer confidence plummeting to its lowest level in history and the stock market falling 20% since his taking office, it’s clear that something is wrong.
I believe it is that so far, Barack Obama has focused on the short term, on what I refer to as the first order effects of his policies. That initially plays well with some in the media and with the public at large. But investors are looking to see what the impact will be down the road. They don’t like what they see. President Obama’s economic policies fail to take into account second and third order effects.
In the president’s first address to Congress, he announced plans for a trillion-dollar health care plan and to take responsibility for a child from birth to its first job—universal healthcare, universal pre-school and universal higher education. To a lot of people, that sounds pretty good.
But look at the consequences: a budget that grows discretionary spending by a whopping 12%, that produces trillion-dollar deficits and that means much more borrowing from the Chinese and others. We may be approaching the tipping point where people who are lending us all that money will begin to worry about what the dollar will be worth in the future.
President Obama’s excessive spending and borrowing could precipitate a crisis of confidence in our currency and lead to hyper-inflation, evaporating what is left of family savings and wiping out the middle class.
The President’s cap-and-trade plan also ignores second order effects. By placing a trillion dollar energy burden on companies that do business here and without requiring China and India and others to sign on, energy-intensive companies will move.
Emissions will grow in China even as they decline—along with jobs—here in the US. Even those who are worried about carbon emissions don’t call it America warming—they call it global warming.
The President’s corporate tax plan makes the same error. He proposes to tax multi-national companies that “export jobs to other countries.” Sounds good on the surface.
But American companies that have subsidiaries doing business in other countries already pay taxes there; making them pay higher US taxes will make them uncompetitive in those markets and cost jobs here. And the multinationals themselves will simply relocate outside the US. The result will not be more jobs and more tax revenue as the President claims, but less.
The administration intends to sharply raise taxes on all investment income: interest, dividends and capital gains. But the pool of risk capital that finances new jobs and new businesses has already been shrunk by trillions of dollars; raising the tax on investment will shrink it further, depress job creation and result in less government revenue.
Even the President’s mortgage plan fails to adequately consider its long term consequences. By requiring investors and lenders to reduce the principal amount of their loan and by enabling bankruptcy judges to re-write mortgages, investors in the future will demand higher mortgage interest rates to compensate for their higher risk. Housing will suffer, as will responsible borrowers.
Perhaps the most disconcerting aspect of the President’s proposals is that they appear to be taking America down the very path of big government, big spending and big borrowing that got us in so much trouble in the first place.
By ignoring the second order consequences of his policies, the President is deepening and lengthening this recession. He inherited a recession, yes, but he is making it worse.
There is still time to limit the damage caused by the President’s policies. Republicans and “blue dog” Democrats need to insist on fiscal discipline. Expanding health insurance and improving education can be achieved without massive new federal spending.
Taxes should not be raised. Energy policy must not penalize America. Entitlements must be reformed. And a half a trillion dollar deficit in four years, which rises every year thereafter, must be rejected. It is unacceptable as a budget; it is unthinkable as a goal.
In times like these, America needs leaders with vision—men and women who see beyond the immediate, who understand and appreciate the importance of looking beyond today’s horizon.
President Obama has the opportunity to be that kind of leader. But that will only happen if he and his administration put aside their nearsighted, liberal agenda and focus on America’s future.
Mitt Romney is the former governor of Massachusetts.

I really don't think, at this point, that disaster President Obama is bringing on this country is anything other than exactly what he wanted to do.

Summed up the crisis PERFECTLY. That Pres Obama doesn't see the long term effects of his short-sighted actions is frighting. That so many democrats do not see it either is even more frightning.

It seems to me that the current crisis has been 40 years in the making. A product of too-high taxes, ill-advised government regulations, and out-of-control government spending. The solution: more regulations, higher taxes, and more spending. Incredible!

Romney writes: "President Barack Obama’s actions on the economy have had the opposite effect than what was intended." I disagree. I think Obama is getting exactly what he intended. He appears to WANT to weaken the American economy, destroy the savings held by workers who have joined investor class so they will join unions and pay obama's masters.

The way Obama keeps whining about inheriting a deficit simply outrages me. The guy just tripled the deficit! He gave up his right to gain any sympathy for having inherited a deficit. That he keeps whining about what he inherited is utterly ridiculous. Romney is right. Oh to have had such a man as Romney in office right now. Sigh.

This column is so dead on! I agree 110 percent. Honestly, I can't help but wonder if Obama is purposely trying to sabotage the United States, because each measure he's pushing will do nothing but cripple our economy and turn us into more of a welfare/nanny state than we already are. It's socialist, and it's wrong - people have the right to equal opportunity, but not equal results. Those must be earned by merit. Otherwise there's no incentive to excel, and that will stifle our nation's economy more than anything.

I must disagree with Mr. Romney. I believe President Obama IS aiming at long-term goals. Unfortunately, those are goals that Mr. Romney and many of us do not share: government control of health care, strengthened unions, particularly government employee unions, redistribution of wealth in the name of "fairness," among others. President Obama is not ignorant of the economic impact of his policy decisions. That would be less frightening because ignorance can be cured. No, President Obama has made these choices well aware of the economic destruction he will cause in the long run and has decided that his social priorities are better for the country in the long run.

This type of thinking is an example of why I supported Gov Mitt Romney in 08. The man has more executive and chief executive experience in both the private and public sectors than EVERYONE that ran for President in 08. I'm not really sure I buy the line that Obama "inherited a recession". The economy STARTED declining about the time it became clear that a Democrat would win the White House. As the election drew closer and the coming of democrat President grew closer, the economy kept getting worse. Obama didn't "inherit" a recession ... he CAUSED it in the first place.

You're no better than the morally inept executives at AIG that think they need to be compensated (re-elected) for their failure, under the premise that they are the only ones who can fix the mess they've created! Romney is a brilliant, accomplished leader of impecable personal character. He knows what it takes to compete and succeed in the real world of job creation. He was the right man at the right time. Republicans were stupid to pick McCain (who knows nothing of business or economics) at the urging of his bigoted lacky Huckabee. America will have another chance in 2012 to get it right. Well written article. The criticisms of Obama and his team are valid. But I think that leadership of the Republican party will move to the fellow that goes beyond well-deserved criticism and proposes intelligent solutions as well. Everyone is crying out for a way to stabilize the housing and mortgage markets - if we can figure that out, many other issues will fall in place. How can we boost demand for housing and re-establish the value of mortgage-backed securities?

Second and Third Order effects of Iraq

Mar 18, 2009

It's interesting to hear Republicans lecture the Dems about long term consequences. If Mr. Romney's party had the long term in mind when it plunged us into Iraq or failed to regulate Credit Default Swaps? More importantly, Romney links consumer confidence directly to Obama's policies as if there's a "Fix this quick" solution. Rather, there is a whole order of steps that need to take place before we can start fully recovering from the financial mess that we're in. Mr. Romney decries measures which risk public confidence in our nation's economy. Is it possible that writing a letter to Mr. Obama directly is a far better way to point out the flaws in his approach than to reveal them to the public? Or perhaps, Romney is just setting up a paper trail for his run in 2012. But no matter what anti-liberal legal reforms Romney's church funds, Republicans will never endorse a non-WASP.

President Obama has been in office 7 weeks now and handling President Bush's mess superbly. It may take year or two to sort out all the problems. Mitt Romney had no comment to make in 8 years while Bush was running our economy to the ground. He should reserve his comment on President Obama for at least 8 years.

"The power to tax is the power to destroy. A government which lays taxes on the people not required by urgent public necessity and sound public policy is not a protector of liberty, but an instrument of tyranny." ~~~ Calvin Coolidge, 1924 What these liberals are doing amounts to a tax on our children and grandchildren, and they all need to be tossed out of office at the next possible opportunity. And not just the democrats, but the greedy, good old boy republicans who had the chance to lead, and let this country down. Tea parties are a start, but a voter revolution would be a great finish!

Um, by math the market is off by only 10% since Obama took office, not by 20% as Mitt claims, but then again, Republicans are not exactly known for their proficiency in arithmetic. Considering Romney supported the Republican policies which over the course of this decade, gave stock investors a return of negative 30% over the entire Bush Presidency, the only way I could take Mitt seriously is if he wrote a column entitled "Let Me Explain Why I Have Been So Incredibly Wrong for So Many Years."

>With consumer confidence plummeting to its lowest level in history and the stock market falling 20% since his taking office, it’s clear that something is wrong. What's wrong is Mitt's competence at Maths. The Dow is down 5% since Obama became President. Which would mean you're wrong by a factor of FOUR, except ... the Dow is only 30 stocks of older, established companies. The NASDAQ, with its emphasis on new and high-tech companies, is UP 3.5 percent since the inauguration.

I would not assume this article was written the same exact day it was published, not if you are familiar with journalism.

This is the kind of mess America gets in when the media & talking heads lead America down the path of destruction. Style over substance times 10. Obama looked the part of competence yet without any history of it. On the other hand Mitt Romney has a history of business and economic recovery with real experience in competency! No man is without faults, and coming off Bush, Romney was probably doomed to fail. How refreshing would it be for the GOP to simply stand behind Mitt, and only Mitt, and unify themselves. Disregard the archaic Primary system and get some real change in there. Alright...I'm going to go back to finding a job now that my former employer let me go this week because they have to cut costs to afford to pay out more COBRA insurance costs from the Stimulus. Yeah...I get a better rate right? Who cares that I lose my job over it right? Thanks Barack!

SP

Mar 18, 2009

This is what's so disappointing about Republicans, both politicians and pundits. I'm going to skip over the possibility that Obama doesn't know what he's doing. The one common thread that runs through every major decision in his life, from what church to join, what foundations to work for, what political causes to advance, and even what woman to marry, has been that he always sided with whomever believes America is a "downright mean" racist, capitalist, militarist, and imperialist country. And apparently our "leaders" are too obtuse to notice.

MJ does not know what he is talking about, since COBRA health insurance is paid for entirely by the employee, not the employer. He is correct that the rate he must pay will be less, because the President's Stimulus package will pay 65% of the premium. Whatever reason MJ's employer may have had for laying it off, it is sheer nonsense to blame President Obama's economic recovery policies for it.

Realspear, c'mon--open your eyes. It wasn't until the DNC got the majority of seats in the house and senate that the problems began, fueled by the likes of Barney Frank and Senator Chris Dodds. The Legislative Government (DNC majority)started to interfere with the ebb and flow of the natural housing market all in the name of 'spreading equality'and 'buying votes'. Have you not heard of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae???? Do some research before you shoot off your mouth. Greenspan and Bush warned of these consequences back in 2004 as did Romney all through the two year march to the Whitehouse. Problem is the DNC had the majority and saw this pending "crisis [as] an opportunity to expand government", to quote Emmanuel. Wake up America! Romney 2012.

How we wish and hope that intelligent reason will prevail during Obama's presidency. He is a TOP business man with loads of experience , but people were not willing to look at deep thoughtful issues...like the good of America. We must take back Our country...we the people. Our country belongs to US. God help us if we don't start to get serious about what is happening. I feel helpless, but never HOPELESS. H.M.Thomas

We need Mitt Romney who understands far reaching effects of policies and who is capable of cutting government expenses just like he cut expenses for the 2002 Olympics.

Thank you Mitt Romney for this piece. You have a solid grasp on the real issues Americans are faced with today. Oh how I wish we could press a reset button on the 08 election, as someone else mentioned. The country needs experienced leadership RIGHT NOW and Obama is just demonstrating his lack of understanding and total incompetence.

Makes me feel good to see that a man I very much admire is echoing many of the sentiments I've been expressing. Namely, that the financial markets, consumer confidence, and nearly every other significant indicator dive ever deeper each time Obama opens his mouth. Will the country be too far shot to pieces by 2012? RE: the 10%/20% market decline debate - I would be more interested to see the total decline percentage from election day to present. The markets reflect the hopes, fears and expectations of investors. The Obama effect was put into play from the unfortunate moment he was elected.

Keep it up Mitt! You are the man for 2012. Just please don't forget about our need to drill for oil, our defense against a EMP attack, the need for nuclear plants and dams and securing the border.

Your article sounds like you still think Obama is a man of good will who is trying to help our country. I don't believe that. Everything he says and does sounds like he is trying to bring our country to its knees (which looks to me like the only place we CAN go!) Why would he do that? He seems to be perfectly happy doing what he is doing, doing exactly what he intended to do. If the election was honest, which I doubt, the American people elected a tyrant dictatorship which cares only about its insiders and maintaining power. He is ruining our country. Obama's walk in the streets of Washington D.C. on January 20th was the funeral procession for our democracy.

I would love to see Mitt debate Obama -- Mitt would trounce him. I hope the people who opposed Mitt just because of his religion are ashamed and get behind this man in 2012.

I feel I am OK right now in life, mtg is being paid, my wife and I have our jobs. I think I will benefit from some of Obama's proposals but I worry about my son. What will he face? I do not think Obama is a bad man he just needs to pay attention to the middle class. Thank you Mr. Romney for your article, it made me think of what is at stake.

What about "transnationalism?" What about courts using UN and other international resolutions or standards for deciding cases instead of using our constitution? Is our constition "hanging by a thread?" Obama desperately wants to be the leader of the whole world, not just the free (?) world and he is willing to trash our constitution to do it. I don't want to be Europe. Help!!!

I am writing from Dubai & waiting for the economy to get better. I am not sure if i need to wait 4 years till Mitt get elected! Excellent article and hope that you will write on a weekly basis your opinion as the market is fluctuating so fast. On that note, is it possible to have (unless i missed it) on your website a page dedicated to financial updates and your and/or contributors inputs. God Bless America Paul M

Ok, I have see what is happening, I anticipated this as well, I did not vote for this President because of this, but, with so many Americans that are looking for the "golden egg" how can we stop this. This is our "SWEAT EQUITY" that our liberal, free spending, government is spending. There is no free lunch, regardless of station. Work hard, plan for tomorrow, measure risk, accept your consquences. How do we stop this HUGH rolling ball of spending? Or, do we all scream for our share before it is all gone? STOP SPENDING, NO MORE CAREER POLITITIANS. DO YOUR JOB, WITHOUT POLITICAL AGENDAS, WITHOUT CULTURAL AGENDAS, ETC. DO WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN ENTRUSTED TO DO, CREATE SAFE FISCAL POLICIES, KEEP OUR MONEY HOME, INVEST WITHIN OURSELVES (AMERICA).

Please do what you can to stop this madness! These guys have got to be stopped. Oboma bought the WH and now has control of unions as well as the media. Universal HC is scaring me. Global warming is a hoax. God forbid that he gets a second term!

is this a surprise? the country will be in the shape california is in,and soon.the people who still support obambi, and the unions, and g e and a few others who own him and a few others in washington, are as much to blame as the administration. i purchased a dodge van once, and hated to admit for a while, that i had backed the wrong horse, but after being stranded a few times,i traded it in on a ford f 250,and admitted the dodge was a mistake. if we as a people admit we make mistakes, and get rid of obambi, ried, pelosi, dodd, rangel, and especially barney blow hard franks, and move on we will not have to be stranded for good, but if we keep them much longer,we all go down the proverbial toilet.

A breath of fresh air and executive leadership stamped all over Mitt Romney...He really gets it! Do you see we really do have the answer for 2012? It is Gov. Mitt Romney..We are really fortunate to have this chance to have such a quality person.. Everyone....we can't let Mitt slip away, we deserve the best of the best....and we must all be on watch for this very liberal agenda being forced fed us..America, we are being invaded from within..We must vote in 2010, get more Constitutional believers on the hill. If we love this country, we must wake up, speak up, and stand for the Founding Fathers beliefs and this wonderful country..and if you haven't gone to: Freeandstrongamericapac Mitt's site...Do it today....
