Our dumb and dumber Congress

By: James Carafano

Something extraordinary will happen at Washington, DC's Newseum on July 3.

There, on the day before Independence Day, those who suffered through the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon will tell their stories. For the ages. It's part of an oral history project sponsored by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, in partnership with StoryCorps.

Attack survivors, members of victims' families, first responders, volunteer rescuers and other witnesses will record the horrors and heroics they witnessed that day. Their interviews will be maintained at the Library of Congress and become part of the permanent collection at the 9/11 memorial in New York. (While the interviews are being recorded, Newseum visitors will be able to sign one of the "I" beams that will be used in building the memorial.)

It's important to preserve, forever, the memory of that murderous attack on the American homeland. If we forget the past, it may well revisit us again.

That said, let's hope members of Congress will read some of these transcripts. It may remind them of their obligation to be ever-vigilant, and to give us laws that will keep us safe, free, and prosperous against a lurking transnational terrorist threat.

Sadly, this year the House on the Hill seems inclined to do anything but that. Here is a short list of really stupid pending legislation. Some entries exemplify "checkbook security"--measures that succeed in spending money, without improving our security.

Others exemplify "feel-good security"--bills that pretend to do something worthwhile, when it's not. And some demonstrate "checklist security"--meaningless gestures that won't accomplish much of anything. None of it is real security.

Topping the "dumb" list is a bill called "Providing for Additional Security in States Identification (PASS ID)." Despite its misleading title, PASS ID actually "takes a pass" at implementing a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission: Improving the security of identity credentials like driver's licenses.

The bill would rescind key provisions of the REAL ID Act, which established national standards. One requirement eliminated is a system that allows states to readily cross-check their data bases to combat fraud and identity theft. While PASS ID wouldn't roll back REAL ID in its entirety, it would leave us with something akin to a square fort with three walls.

Then there's the proposed "Chemical Facility Antiterrorism Act." The Department of Homeland Security has already established reasonable standards for chemical security, but they expire in October. Rather than just reauthorize the standards, this House bill would hijack the issue and force new regulations to advance an activist environmental agenda.

Under this bill, the government gets to decide what chemicals companies should be producing. And the criteria for this decision-making will be "green," not security. While this will do little to make us safer, it is sure to drive some chemical companies out of business and encourage others to move operations--and jobs--overseas.

Also pending in the House is the "Homeowners Defense Act," a bill to create a massive government insurance program--allegedly to help Americans recover after a catastrophic disaster. In reality, the main function of the bill is to force all taxpayers to subsidize insurance for folks who opt to live in beach houses in hurricane zones.

Beachfront property offers a pleasant but risky lifestyle, to be sure. But why should these property owners expect others to underwrite their risky behavior? And what in the world does it have to do with security?

And, of course, there's the "Travel Promotion Act." This bill proposes an unusual "solution" to the post-9/11 decline in foreign travel to the United States: Slap a tax on foreigners who do visit. The tax money, you see, would then pay for a government-sponsored ad campaign to encourage people to visit.

The geniuses in Congress are really onto something with this one, aren't they? It could be the start of something really big. How about taxing foreigners who buy U.S. produced beef so the government could launch a "Buy Beef" campaign? Or maybe a special levy on foreigners who buy GM cars. You can almost see the U.S. steel flying off foreign showroom floors, can't you?

Unfortunately, this through-the-looking-glass logic is all the rage on Capitol Hill. But piling up debt, raising taxes, growing government, strangling private industry, and repealing sound security measures will not make us safer. As unveiled so far this year, the Congressional agenda for homeland security so far just makes our legislative leaders look dumb and dumber.

That last one is the best...its like stabbing a piece of food with a fork in your right hand, and instead of putting it directly in your mouth, wrapping your arm around the backside of your neck and sticking the food in the left side of your mouth.

Interesting you mention the homes on shorelines. John Stossel did a piece (maybe book) a few years back and he was on the O'Reilly Factor. He told the story about how he built a home up in New England on the shore and made sure to keep it under some limit. As long as he did that it would get completely rebuilt, and flood insurance goes through the Govt. He spoke of how it was destroyed several times and he just rebuilt it.

Our freedoms are being eroded at a fast pace with this socialist bureaucratic government of Barack Husseim Obama. A government tightening controls on its citizens only leads towards a totalitarian oppressive regime, which is the true agenda of Obama from the beginning. The future of this once great country is gloomy!

who specifically sponsored these bills? Do they have widespread support or are they just easy targets for talking heads? Have you contacted the sponsors on a non confrontational way to discuss how these bills might be harmful to the country or do you just rail in the press?

If you think these are bad, wait until we get a look at the "energy" bill. My house was built in 1959 and it will cost me about 70,000 to get it "sellable" meaning all the upgrades to help the environment. We are in such trouble and you people who voted for Pelosi, Obama, Teddy and the bunch deserve the nation you voted for. Change, Change, no dollars in your pocket but we might leave some Change. And by the way, you better be happy that we in the white house are so benevolent

The expansion of federal government has been happening for some time. What is up with all these czars and are they the ones setting all these policies? How many representatives in Congress are actually listening to the people? It is a minority of the people that are actually 'for' these crazy policies.

I am glad to see so many of you as very concerned as I am, locally I am surrounded by people shaking their heads saying it is bad but 'what can I do?' I agree we need to Vote Them OUT! I am sending emails to all my senators/ representatives, signing petitions as well as sending faxes to them. I am not just going to shake my head, I am going to try anything I can think of. Where is my wonderful country I love heading? God Help Us All.

All of the (leftist, liberal) government takeover & ruining the USA is being done intentionally. It is a power-grab marching toward a one-world government. Problem is: once they have killed as much as possible (future taxpayers, incentive, etc.), they aren't going to have much of anyone or anything remaining from which to get their money.

Surely since congress is loaded with people who "represent" the people of this country. Who are they representing by promoting such fool hardy policies? Do the people in congress have any responsibility to prove that the laws they enact represent the voters in their districts?

fab41: "We all know Congress is out of control. They spend money like there was a endless supply. Yes, of course, there IS an endless supply: YOUR future earnings, at the current rate also your childrens' and grand-childrens'. Don't want to work anymore? Never fear, the history of any modern 3rd-world country and any ancient feudal society shows it is impossible for you to sink so low that your "betters" won't find a way to squeeze another penny from you. With guns on their hips, diamonds on their fingers, and whips in their hands that YOU paid for, they'll MAKE you work. 'Til your very last breath!

If what the Democrats are doing to the REAL ID act does anything to gut its "Mark of the Beast" similarities, then fine, I'm glad for it. It's bad enough that because, supposedly, of deadbeat dads, everyone has to have an SSN to get a job, open a bank account, and get a commercial drivers license. We might as well stick a chip in everyone, its about to that point. The only people I would agree to stick a chip in are US Representatives and Senators.

And what more would one expect from a bunch of clueless fools? I totally agree with one of the earlier comments -there will be a 2nd American Revolution and it can't come too soon. Yes, thank you for the heads up to know what bills we face in the near future. Somehow they all seem dumb and dumber. Doesn't anyone in Washington care that our economy is tanking and there won't be money to pay these new taxes?? Just how much blood do they think they can get from a turnip? Please if you read this, attend a tea party somewhere in the US. There are at least 1500 of them going on this July 4th. You can find one in your state at www.teapartyday.com or teapartypatriots.org. You can follow up by joining groups like American Liberty Alliance and American Majority to get involved on a local level and make 'change' that's good. For pete's sake, if you're not registered to vote, get in there and do so. Use the only power we have left before they take it away. And use the one that we have so neglected to our harm, that is, prayer to God Almighty for mercy.

I could not agree more. The President, Congress and Senate are more interested in power then doing the job they were sent to DC for...to represent and protect the American people. If they don't start representing the people, the people will start uprising against the government....soon to come I'm sure as NO ONE in our government is listening to the American people, who are struggling as more and more is put upon them. We will fight for our liberty and freedom just as our forefathers did....so the President, Congress and Senate need to get their head out of the sand and start opening their eyes as to what the American people are really thinking and saying.

I don't think our Congessmen are Americans and they have no idea what is in the Constitution that they swore to uphold. They should be required to attend a class to learn about the Constitution. It's encouraging to read all these comments, and to know that we're not alone. I urge everyone who thinks Obama and the Liberals have gone off the rails not to despair. Instead of moaning about our fate, we have to do something to prevent them from enslaving us. If it takes a revoluiton, so be it. But in the meantime, get active, write letters, call congressmen, attend Tea Parties, get mad as hell and let them know it. Also, let's not blame all politicians; there are plenty of congressmen out there who agree entirely with us. They are our best friends and we need to find out who they are and cultivate them. Freedom!!

It would be helpful and lend credibility if the supposed legislation included the Bill #s so we could ask our supposed representatives if they have even read them. Alice-in-Wonderland indeed! Having essentially nationalized banking and the auto industry, the government now wants to run chemicals, tax tourists and incent people to live in hurricane zones? Was it Winston Churchill who said "politicians will occasionally do the right thing, but only after exhausting all other alternatives." How many silly options do Congress need to fiddle with before they address the trillions of unfunded Social Security and Medicare obligations, the staggering budget deficits, looming inflation and missile defense against Iran/North Korea's nuclear threats?

We are being forced marched into a European Socialist style state. Kennedy, the Clintons, Gore, Pelosi, Reid, Obama et al are surreptitiously raping us of our constitutional rights and plundering our wealth to pay back political debts to special interest groups as fast as they can. And the Politburo (Congress) is a giant rubber stamp group of individuals that are too ignorant to understand that their powers have also been usurped by the liberals in power.

The Democrates in Congress are stuped, clueless and I would say have an IQ 1 point lower than a rock and that go's for Obama. He has not a clue of what should be done to keep us safe. The Gov. can't even control the eillgal problum we have, it's like give them what the want and who gives a s--- that they our in violation of the laws of this land, and we pay for it. Liberal congress is a bunch of clueless, stupid people. Has any one ever looked at the backgrounds of some of the one's that our leading us?, Drunks, bad check writers, some cant even get a credit card, the don't pay back the money they use when running for office, they chet on there wifes are gay an get cought in air port bath rooms trying to have sex. Is there know standerds?,if I was in need of help, I would not give any of them a job. It looks as they can't due the job they have now, vote the bums out.

The funding of ACORN with taxpayer funds to shape election outcomes and census results is terrifying. Barrack Obama is the most dangerous man in the country. If we had a functioning Justice Department, the use of RICO statutes should be employed to properly address this radical attack on the the electoral integrity of the US. It seems that the news media is really tanking on properly reporting what is going on in this country. However, it is the responsibility of decent people to stand up to the attack on our system that Obama and the Dems represent. Were the Dems not the party that championed the Voting Rights Act?

Rather than invent more restraints on people and individuals Congress should remove most of those now in place and lower business and individual taxes Then all Congressmen and women should take a long, long vacation and watch the economy grow. Right now they are doing everything they can to destroy the country. All of these nit picking bills are concocted to justify their jobs. Eliminating political correctness and the nanny state would also help restore responsibility to individuals.

Legislative bills are the result of the Congress trying to justify their jobs. In Calif, we don't need 1500 new pieces of legislation every session. Also enough money for a very strong military , Everything is going so fast that I don't know how we can afford it all so quickly . These three things I've mentioned seems the first most important. Big money spent recklessly probably could have taken care of that. Next what is exactly happening with our health insurance ?
