Newt Gingrich: President Obama should fire Attorney General Eric Holder

By: Newt Gingrich

Among the president's cabinet appointments, the Attorney General is unique.

Whereas the Secretary of Transportation is responsible for the nation's highways and airways, and the Secretary of Agriculture oversees the nation's farms, the Attorney General's charge is upholding the rule of law - the glue that holds together a self-governing people.

In the latest skirmish in the Democratic Party's war on the CIA, Attorney General Eric Holder has failed to uphold this fundamental public trust. And for that, there should be consequences.

Earlier this week, on the same day that the administration released a six-year-old report on terrorist interrogations, Holder announced he is appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the CIA officials who conducted the interrogations.

We know from long experience, of course, that special prosecutors in Washington quickly become self-justifying. To rationalize their existence, they must find people to prosecute, and find they do.

So Holder is tasking his lawyers to prosecute the men and women who worked - successfully - to keep America safe since September 11, 2001. Fair enough. It's not too politically palatable perhaps, but the law is the law.

Or is it?

Americans could be forgiven for believing, on the basis of shamefully twisted mainstream media coverage, that the recently revealed 2004 CIA Inspector-General report at the center of this controversy is merely a cataloging of CIA abuse.

But in fact, the report methodically described a carefully limited and, with a few exceptions, faithfully implemented program of enhanced interrogation techniques - techniques that yielded what the report itself deems valuable results.

The report also details the exceptions, cases in which interrogation techniques were used that were outside the carefully developed regime.

But here is the crucial fact for Holder: All of the allegations of unauthorized methods - all of them - have already been carefully evaluated by career prosecutors. These were legal officials who, unlike Holder, do not owe their jobs to any partisan political figure.

Impartial prosecutors evaluated 20 incidents of unauthorized activity and decided against taking legal action in all cases but one. In that one case, in which a contract employee attacked a terrorist detainee with a metal flashlight, the contractor was found guilty. His case was appealed and his conviction upheld.

In other words, justice was done.

But apparently for Holder, justice under a Republican administration doesn't mean the same thing as justice under a Democratic administration.

On the day the report was released, CIA Director Leon Panetta - himself an Obama appointee - protested that the CIA received "multiple written assurances its methods were lawful."

The report reveals that the men and women of the CIA not only worked diligently to develop and adhere it these methods, but that their work also yielded intelligence that saved lives.

Never mind. There's a new sheriff in town.

Holder, uniquely duty-bound to uphold the law, has disregarded the law as applied by his predecessors because he disagrees with their politics.

You could say that this is behavior more befitting a Third World dictatorship than the United States of America, except that even Third World dictators don't unilaterally disarm in the process of administering politically driven "justice."

The Obama Administration, still in the middle of a war with the radical wing of Islam, is waving a white flag of surrender. The honorable thing would be for the president to come out and say it; to tell the American people that be believes the threat manifest on 9/11 has passed. That we can now return to business as usual.

Instead, the president is silent on Martha's Vineyard, and his surrogates are blaming the political prosecutions of CIA officials on the Attorney General.

Even if you believe this convenient division of political culpability, the Attorney General has failed to honor the law. He has given into - or faithfully carried out - the revenge fantasies of the anti-American left.

If Obama won't uphold his fundamental duty as Commander-in-Chief to defend those who have been defending America, the least he can do is insist that his Attorney General uphold his fundamental duty to defend the rule of law.

If Holder and his senior team won't do the right thing and resign their positions, Obama should do the right thing and fire them.

When the Black Panthers weren't prosecuted my thought was hmmmmm what gives here? The behavior was documented on YouTube for cryin out loud. Now he wants to investigate thru a special prosecutor the CIA. Big mistake is my take on this. I was in Army Intelligence and there is no way to feel comfort in trying to gain intelligence with this person as the Atty Gen for sure!!!

Many of us so this takeover by "enemies of the America we all knew and loved."If we don't elect a Republican House next year, we are truly doomed. Retaking the senate next year is virutally impossible. I shouldn't say that since Al Franken has actually been seated.

Oh please. Can you say Alberto Gonzales. This newspaper is halarious and so is the Newt.

Mad Monica

Aug 28, 2009

You people realllly amaze me. If Gonzales had done HALF of what this guy has done in his short time in office you guys would have screamed bloody frickin' murder! The man has let anyone who would benefit this administration off on anything that might look bad, yet goes after those who managed to keep us all safe after 9/11. Try getting your heads out of you BDS behinds and LOOK at the facts for a freakin' change!!

Mad Monica

Aug 28, 2009

Oh and don't forget, your new president is busily working to get his hands on the Internet because he hasn't given himself enough power with his little "interrogation unit" gestapo yet. Heck, once you guys control the Internet, the auto industry, health care, the judiciary, etc., you won't have to worry about anyone disgreeing with you because there won't be anyone left. But then that's how you like it, isn't it?

Aug 28, 2009

Of course, Obama won't fire Holder because in fact he is doing Obama's bidding. Obama is at risk of losing his base - over the retention of many Bush administration measures in dealing with terrorists, over the failing and flailing of Obamacare. Going after the CIA for 'torturing' detainees is important to Obama politically.

JIMV

Aug 28, 2009

S how does e get rid of him...he is acting at his masters bidding. The only way to stop this mess would be for the leadership of the party in the Congress to hold a press conference and tell the country loudly that this stops now or it is guaranteed that every important Obama hack will be himself personally investigated the first time republicans regain power...and make it a promise.

Aug 28, 2009

And let's not forget the Walpin firing (Americorps IG) with the DoJ protection of Kevin Johnson (who stole Americorps money but was a strong Obama supporter). Or dropping the recent Richardson case.

Clearly the most corrupt DoJ in my lifetime. And this is just the beginning. I can't wait to see who Holder will pursue next week while forgiving yet another crook.

btw, any charges against Charlie Wrangel? Frank Murtha? Chrissie Dodd? Bwaney Fwank?

When we regain power, we better go after each and every Democrat leader in Washington. More than half deserve to be in jail, the rest deserve to be retired into some socialist hellhole.

I'm not sure that Obama is on board with Holder's actions. I believe that Obama is beholden to the loons on the left who financed his election. Every time he tries to do something that appears moderate, the loons start screaming and then he dutifully moves back hard left.

The problem with making a deal with the devil is that you have to do the devil's work. In this case, that means governing from the hard left.

Obama's taking the "kitchen sink" approach to the radical changes he's trying to pass assuming that the sheeple, with their short memories, will forget all about it in four years. That's what Jimma thought too.

1 Holder should be fired
2 fire all of the czars
3 Vote out all dem incumbents in 2010
4 impeach Obama for treason
Final outcome=America will recover

Aug 28, 2009

What galls me the most is how he has dismissed cases that would affect Democratics (the New Black Panther Party and Bill Richardson) on the basis of "not enough ground" even though there is video on one and numerous details on the other and then proceeds with an investigation that has "no grounds".

When I heard about Holder going after the CIA, it set in stone with me that Obama's idea of the "rule of law" is not what most people think it is. Politics are always a factor in life, but their actions are not even trying to hide their agenda. Firing of IGs for political reasons, dropping charges against Black Panter Party members, reading rights to terroists, and now going after the CIA. This is 'hope and change'.

Is it time to consider splitting the country? There are now two Americas. One that si weak and spends and oen that is strong on defense and self-supporting. Give them NY and LA, maybe all of CA and NY state. The Lobbyists are running the politics. America loses unless we fight back.

I recently sent a "thank you" letter to the U.S. Commission for Civil Rights. They are the ONLY group willing to challenge the recent dismissal of the Black Panther voter intimidation case. They have demanded that the DoJ explain their actions in this case.

I agree, Holder is a disgrace.

Amanda

Aug 28, 2009

Gingrich, as usual, is blowing smoke. A number of government and other reports have raised serious questions about possible criminal violations by Bush administration minions. Attorney General Holder is simply investigating to see if their were prosecutable crimes committed in the so-called war on terror. Whether there were or not, the Bush/Cheney/Rove administration did substantial damage to our country and our country's image. Let the investigation go on.

Mark Boabaca

Aug 28, 2009

Anyone who believes that Bush/Cheney et al should be prosecuted when they were kept safe is clueless.

You can tell who is a clueless liberal when they use the term "so-called war on terror".

Right, Amanda?

So Eric Holder will prosecute people charged with protecting America from Muslim radicals but the Obama tax cheats get off scott free...... Obama .........learning on the job

Wayne

Aug 28, 2009

For those of you educated in government run public schools and have no hold on history, please know that Adolph Hitler was not a conservative, he was a liberal and his political party was the National Socialist Party... The same platform that the democrats are ramming down our throats. Treason is the code word of the day. But I must say that the BO machine is excellent at duping most of America. A friend in the JDL is astounded that BO was actually able to lie his way into the hearts of many Jewish people here in the U.S. and many even voted for him. My grandfathers journal stated very clearly that nothing bad could happen to their country, it was the safest country on Earth. He writes later after his escape to Switzerland, "we had no idea of the power of Hitler, in only four short years he turned the safest country on Earth into the most horrific murder machine the world has ever seen."

BO I believe is the next Hitler.

Holder will not touch a group of Black Panthers who were caught on tape intimidating white voters during bthe election.......That's due to the obvious fact the Panthers are black and the voters were white....... Holder is a closet racist who just came out of the closet

John

Aug 28, 2009

Wayne......You must keep in perspective the fact that the United States is now being "led" by an individual who has no experience in government......period. He came from the cesspool of Chicago, taught a little Con Law and has never even managed the local grocery store. I may as well be in charge of heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic.... Holder was picked by a Muslim President because Holder is black. He, too, possesses no real qualifications for the job.....It's the color of his skin that got him his job.... Hold on America.......Mr. Obama has not a clue..

Al

Aug 28, 2009

Amanda, how many "so-called" dead people were killed on 9-11? There were more killed then than from Japan's "so-called" attack on Pearl Harbor.

I am more convinced every day that the adage that "Republicans don't have a heart and Democrats don't have a brain" gives too much credit to Democrats. A case in point is Greg's comment above, "Can you say Albert Gonzalez?" As though asking if people can pronounce something even remotely qualifies as a response to logical arguments.

Ohiolad

Aug 28, 2009

For Newt to call for the firing of Holder might lead one to think that Holder is somehow acting independently. But realistically we know that the green light to pursue these criminal investigations has come from the top. So I would reiterate Panetta’s accusation – “Whose side are they on?” Are they on the side of America or her enemies?

Richard

Aug 28, 2009

As a former career federal prosecutor, I agree that the Attorney General's investigation represents a serious abuse of prosecutorial discretion with dire ramifications for our national security. I have just started a new blog at www.whitecollarcrimeingeorgia.blogspot.com which includes more of my views about this issue, along with my own fictional, satirical account of what the U.S. Army/CIA Manual on "New" Guidelines for Interviewing Captured Terrorists might look like now! Interesting article and comments, here, everyone!

While Obama's Attorney General adds to the strain on the CIA and makes it less able to defend us in the future, he takes a pass on corruption (Bill Richardson) and voter intimidation (Black Panthers). It's unspeakable!

Obama intends to put as much of the private economy under government control to create his nanny state utopia where he is the boy king.

Let's continue to stand strong against Obama in every way and get Congress out of the hands of the insane Pelosi and Reid in 2010.

Obama is a smug, smirking con man. Nothing more.

Well, freaking duh.

One of these days you sheep are going to realize that in the cabalistic group think of the current administration the only dangerous, heavily armed, religious, terrorist, zealots with whom they are at war happen to bear the title "citizen of the United States" and call themselves Evangelical (mostly white) Christians.

And they will not rest of stop until their enemies are utterly eliminated, their DNA removed from the gene pool, and every trace of them wiped from the history books until the end of time.

It's the "hate thing", stupid.

The problem with Gingrich is his perverted sense of morality. He's still mentally and morally operating under the same warped thinking and valuing that led him to believe delivering divorce papers to his wife, who was hospitalized and battling cancer, was the "right" thing to do. This is the man who castigated Clinton for adultery and lying, and led the ridiculous charge to impeach him, while old nasty Newt was adulterating and lying about it with a staff female during that very time period. Newt's a smart and clever guy, but his moral system is shabby, even shambles, and it shows every time he opens his morally-challenged mouth to express his "moral" outrage. He, like many others, have "Republican morals," which means lying, fraud, greed, selfish ambition and hypocrisy are highly valued and constitute his guiding lights.

This holder has taken our country back over 100 years. Now color matters and he is only looking at one color. I am ashamed that he has not been fired for his deliberate RACIAL actions. Unless this is the policy of this administration. It is obvious that mr. oboma does not have control of the people he has appointed. mr. oboma told everyone he would not want an investigation in to the past, but holders agenda is to prosucute any white person he wants. But he is forgetting that he is opening a can he can't close. The next president can now come back and prosecute the things he does not like that this admin. is doing. BAD policy. Fire them all and start fresh. That is my plan when the next election comes around. All incumbants will have to go..

Gentlemen:
I hate to tell you, but "I told you so". Holder is a blaggard and has contempt for the Constitution. He showed bad judgment for promoting the pardon of Marc Rich (an enemy of state at the time). Now he is diverting attention to the CIA & interrogation techniques already adjudicated upon 5 years ago. And, he is diverting attention away from the President's relation to ACORN, along with money laundering (tax-payers money?) through that organization. If we are "head hunting" let's do it right! If I were a Blue-Dog Democratic following Obama's lead, I'd be very worried about now!

/You people realllly amaze me. If Gonzales had done HALF of what this guy has done in his short time in office you guys would have screamed bloody frickin' murder!/

Gonzales was one of the most incompetent Attorneys General the country has ever seen. The only thing he did well during his tenure was sign excuse notes for criminal actions.

If he had done half of what Holder's doing here, he'd have been twice the Attorney General he was.

/The man has let anyone who would benefit this administration off on anything that might look bad, yet goes after those who managed to keep us all safe after 9/11./

By your reasoning, I could argue that this rock keeps tigers away. I don't see any tigers around here, do you?

Great idea Newty, but it just won't happen. Why should anyone be surprised by this kind of distaste for US or its policy under Bush by the libs. Mr. Cheney is absolutely correct about this situation. It is so obvious with the protection of New Black Panthers, ACORN and its many offshoots, firing of Walpin for investigating Obama buddy, Gates issue, Czar who is a communist, etc. they protect their own crooks, criminals, and behavior, and are judge and jury for that which they did not create or approve. This is so obvious it smells. Holder as well as Obama is dangerous, together, pay close attention. Keep your eyes wide open!

Will the Democrats put the Black Panthers at every polling booth in 2010 and 2012 to keep up the intimidation and help secure another victory for the Democrats. What will they have to loose, with Holder around they get off without any questions ask, not even a slap on the wrist.
The BO is like the mob boss he lets others do his dirty work and he acts like he had nothing to do with the action.
This is scary times, and I am very afraid.

I did not see any Black Panthers at my poling booth. Nor did any of my friends. Where do these lies come from and who are these idiots who believe them.

Cheney is a torturer and a mass murderer.

check the web and youtube for "black panthers vote" here's a direct link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neGbKHyGuHU This organization should get hit for hate crimes. So should ACORN. I trust both will if Republicans follow Holder's exmaple when they take over. Hello. Pendulum is swinging farther left, then farther right, farther left... BAAM!!

I have the perfect solution: Give them Michigan. They can enact every liberal policy conceivable: ObamaCare, Welfare, Food Stamps, Affordable Housing,Cap Trade,AND Public Transportation for all. Then, we will secure the borders, starting at the borders of Michigan at all compass points. As long as they move to and stay in Michigan, they can have anything that they want! Problem solved. Thank you. Night All!
