Glenn Harlan Reynolds: Climategate denial foundering on army of Davids

By: Glenn Harlan Reynolds

November 29, 2009

Last week a hacker -- or, perhaps more likely, an inside "whistleblower" -- leaked huge amounts of data from the Climate Research Unit at University of East Anglia in Britain. The leaks demonstrated that many "insider" scientists were conspiring to block publication of dissenting views in peer-reviewed journals, while suggesting that there was data-fudging, and deliberate evasion of Freedom Of Information requests, perhaps even including deliberate destruction of data.

Worse still, the computer models themselves appear to be jerry-rigged and deeply flawed. As Declan McCullagh reported on the CBS News website, independent programmers were appalled:

“As the leaked messages, and especially the HARRY_READ_ME.txt file, found their way around technical circles, two things happened: first, programmers unaffiliated with East Anglia started taking a close look at the quality of the CRU's code, and second, they began to feel sympathetic for anyone who had to spend three years (including working weekends) trying to make sense of code that appeared to be undocumented and buggy, while representing the core of CRU's climate model.

“One programmer highlighted the error of relying on computer code that, if it generates an error message, continues as if nothing untoward ever occurred. Another debugged the code by pointing out why the output of a calculation that should always generate a positive number was incorrectly generating a negative one. A third concluded: ‘I feel for this guy. He's obviously spent years trying to get data from undocumented and completely messy sources.’

“Programmer-written comments inserted into CRU's Fortran code have drawn fire as well. The file briffa_sep98_d.pro says: ‘Apply a VERY ARTIFICAL correction for decline!!’ and ‘APPLY ARTIFICIAL CORRECTION.’ Another, quantify_tsdcal.pro, says: ‘Low pass filtering at century and longer time scales never gets rid of the trend - so eventually I start to scale down the 120-yr low pass time series to mimic the effect of removing/adding longer time scales!’”

None of this inspires confidence. As Megan McArdle noted on the Atlantic Monthly's website: "The IPCC report, which is the most widely relied upon in policy circles, uses this model to estimate the costs of global warming. If those costs are unreliable, then any cost-benefit analysis is totally worthless. Obviously, this also casts their reluctance to conform with FOI requests in a slightly different light.”

Yes, they're acting as if they've got something to hide. But the establishment's response has been to ignore the problem and hope it goes away.

Climate Czar Carol Browner responded: "I'm sticking with the 2,500 scientists. These people have been studying this issue for a very long time and agree this problem is real."

The problem is that the "2,500 scientists" she refers to were relying on data and models that, it now appears, may have been fake. Garbage in, garbage out. Plenty of scientists believed in Piltdown Man, too, for a while.

Big media are downplaying the problem too -- while Declan McCullagh has done great reporting on CBS's website, the network's broadcast coverage has been quite different. Likewise, the New York Times and Washington Post, while covering the matter, have downplayed its significance.

It seems clear that the Obama administration, and the folks in traditional media, think this is a story better ignored.

It won't work. While Big Media folks ignore the story, the alternate media are all over it.

From blogs, to talk radio, to Facebook and Twitter -- and, of course, the Obama administration's bete noire, Fox News -- this story is sweeping the nation and the world (it has already provoked resignations in Australia). With the data made available online, individuals and groups continue to search through the records and find new nuggets of information.

Polls have shown growing public skepticism, both in the U.S. and abroad, even before the Climategate revelations. That is now likely to grow.

For politicians, hitching their wagon to the carbon-control star was already an iffy proposition given widespread economic problems and public skepticism. In light of the Climategate revelations, many of them are likely to view it as something closer to suicide.

My prediction: The Copenhagen global warming conference will feature a lot of pretty words and promises, and no admission that things have changed. But we'll see little or no actual movement, as politicians around the world realize that there's no percentage in pushing these programs on an increasingly wary public.

I pray that you are right. A good many of us instinctively recognize "climate change" for what it really is; a contrived and manufactured excuse for massive taxation, dismantling of industry and relocation of it in third world countries, and control. Control over how, how far, and how much we can travel. Control over our finances for perpetuity. The American story was built on the freedom to travel by way of automobile. They desperately want to change the dynamic. They want to limit our transportation and freedom of travel. Each generation will be less free and less mobile. They will get us used to accepting the will of government. Then they will turn the screws down even tighter. Eventually they will tell us when, where and how far we can travel. They will tell us what we will do for a living. They will tell us what we can and cannot eat and drink. Now is the time to make our stand.

Now you see what Obama's Nobel prize was for, eh? Without the release of the documents, that appeal to vanity might have done the trick.
Holy Jupiter Effect! If Tom Cruise were were a Climatologist it might have worked anyway.

In reading a ClimateGate article in a British newspaper, it seems the "rest of the world" is going to push ahead on the Climate Change agenda as a political agenda, even though facts negate the basis of this agenda. But, then again, what do facts mean to liberals and Socialists? After all, they are the purveyors of "if you state it three or more times, it is fact."

The anger of the " Global Warmers " toward their naysayers will be nothing compared to their anger over being caught falsifying their reports . This , as with their other malfeasances , will be swept under the academic rug as if nothing happened .

CRU had incoherent data sets. They fit the data to their model of global warming. This is not science.

The physics of light tell us that atmospheric carbon dioxide cannot trap heat, and cannot influence climate. That is all ye know, and all ye need to know: http://nov55.com/ntyg.html

Two interesting bookends:

"SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years."

"Leading British scientists at the University of East Anglia, who were accused of manipulating climate change data - dubbed Climategate - have agreed to publish their figures in full."

They threw out their original data upon which their models were based. As a researcher, you never, ever do that. This isn't science, it's a cult.

The messianic priests of the apocalypse kept their sacred writings in the inner sanctum, consulted them from time to time and then came out to make pronouncements of doom to their followers. And then, when they could no longer protect the inner sanctum, presto!, the sacred writings disappeared.

Great deals of money have exchanged hands because of a contrived scheme to defraud. Who make the money, who put it together, who knew and when. Investigate, adjudicate and incarcerate and fine if this proves true. Billions of dollars, jobs and lives have been lost, stick it to the perps.

On thing I am really enjoying and a bit surprised that the author did not mention is that the data that was leaked has been gone over in a spectacular way by several groups.

I have found great information about the data in a variety of places, including a financial forum (they write code for stock forecasting, so broke down the FORTRAN used) a site that analyzed the email connections into a great graphic, and a search routine to scan all the data. All of this really in a few days.

Interesting in what a few thousand people can do in a few days.

Josh,

Put some of those sites up so that we can take a look. The same thing happened to Dan Ranther and Mary Mapes when they tried to use the phoney "evidence" against Bush; within hours Rather's proof was proved to be contrived.

Sorry, Glen; I expect significant stuff to come out of Copenhagen. This will likely be the last chance before the amount of 'social adjustment' to data elsewhere begins to come to light.

This has nothing to do with science; it has to do with statist control ofver the power generation/ automotive industries.

The globalist dreamers may have to create a new global crisis. This one couldn't be hidden well enough. What are the globalists to do?

Nick Beddoes

Nov 29, 2009

Climate change and global warming are real. Today's Washington Times headlines a story about how global warming is shrinking the ski season. Today's NY Times has a story about two German freighters in September being the first commercial ships to use the heretofore unusable Northwest Passage through the Arctic Ocean. We cannot deny the shrinking of the polar ice caps and Greenland and the melting of glaciers worldwide. We cannot deny the destructive effects of overpopulation, resource depletion, shrinking forests, depleted fisheries. Deny climare change all you want. Reynolds and others who would rather hide your heads in the sand, but don't get in the way of scientists and concerned people the world over who know a crisis when they see one.

The "2500 scientists" is baloney, btw. They arrive at that number by adding up all the authors on each IPCC article, and then adding up all the totals. That ends up counting many of the "team" players many times over, and also ends up counting a lot of non-scientists.

I'm sure Browner knows that.

Nick Beddoes

Nick, we know that there has been warming, we also know that there has been cooling. These so called scientist have decided to blame changes on human produced CO2 but can not prove it with their models so they force the models to match their hypothesis. This is not science. In addition, they have cherry picked data from tree rings to eliminate the Mid-evil warming period to make warming in the late 20th century look unprecedented over the last 4,000 years.

If the cap and trade bill becomes law, it will be the biggest ponzi scheme in history and will not impact the climate or create a single "green job."

I think that there was more too it, at least until debunked. Apparently, you can produce the hockey stick by selecting random sequences that have sufficient correlation with what you want.

The common claim that Arctic sea ice is disappearing is bunk: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/04/29/what-is-normal-arctic-ice-extent/
The next time someone says the ice at the North Pole is "gone", look it up here: http://igloo.atmos.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/test/print.sh?fm=11&fd=28&fy=1980&sm=11&sd=28&sy=2009 You can also compare modern ice to historical ice back to 1979, when the satellite mapping started.
Most of the ice in the world is at the South Pole, and it is still very much there. Just look up the temperature at Vostok, Antarctica if you don't believe me.

A Convenient Ruse: Man-Made Global Warming Data Destroyed

The "scientists" at the East Anglia Climatic Research Unit have admitted that the raw data used to divert trillions of dollars to combat Anthropogenic Global Warming has been dumped, supposedly to save space on their servers:

SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

That means there's no chance that their results can be replicated by reputable scientists.

I can't help but despair over the realization of how susceptible our liberty is to the charlatans who want to take it away from us. That a handful of scientific grifters can so easily create an environmental catastrophe myth dressed up as "peer reviewed" science and spoon feed it to our greedy, power-hungry politicians to justify stripping us of our liberty is frightening.

I used to believe that liberty is baked into the American pie, with our Revolution ("No taxation without representation!"), Declaration of Independence and constitution comprising core parts of our national identity. Now I'm not so sure that our history and founding documents are enough to keep us free or at least incline us to the vigilance and courage necessary to resist tyranny and the fraudsters colluding to thrust it on us.

Looks like they've cooked the figures, including here in New Zealand, and yet... apparently we have 100 icebergs heading for our southern coasts right now. Seems they broke off the Antarctic ice shelf. So we have to assume SOMETHING is causing warming.

As the Boston Globe and its left wing allies seem to seek deeper sand in which to bury their heads, the headlines across the pond include "Climate change: this is the worst scientific scandal of our generation" http://bit.ly/7VEGei

The article also mentions that "Google was showing that the word "Climategate" now appears across the internet more than nine million times"

But the lack of coverage here suggests willful ignorance and conspiratorial censorship of the biggest story of the year.

Add to that the "news" that the original temperature data was dumped because they needed the storage space and any idiot can see what's going on.

(BTW - last time I looked a Terabyte of space cost about the same as a tank of gas in my Hummer.)

As a healthcare professional, pharmacist, I have observed what has already been a huge increase in healthcare, passed along to asthma patients, specifically-- in the wake of the Climategate scandal, there could certainly be a class action suit brought by asthma patients, against the EPA and FDA, for totally unnecessarily running up the cost of a critical asthma medication, namely ALBUTEROL MDI, which was banned from production by the EPA/FDA ruling that it harmed the environment due to global warming-- and unjustifiably running up the cost to the patient because of the higher priced replacement products-- we're talking millions of units of these dispensed every day-- not only because there is no proof that it was causing global warming, but also that there was NO testing done that discovered any evidence of lacking efficacy (effectiveness) or safety to the patient--

The comment by Carol Browner:

"I'm sticking with the 2,500 scientists. These people have been studying this issue for a very long time and agree this problem is real."

The problem is that the "2,500 scientists" she refers to were relying on data and models that, it now appears, may have been fake.

Another MINOR problem is that there never ever were 2,500 scientists. This came from a marketing brochure of the IPCC regarding their fourth tome, issued in 2007.

Analysis of names in the documents show some 600 people, many of whom were not scientists but editors or other people engaged in preparing the material.

Carol Browner stands firm on a lie.
