Paul Mirengoff: Why does he hate us? Barack Obama's America-effacing presidency

On the morning after the deadliest instance of Islamist terrorism in the United States since 9/11, President Obama warned the American public not to "jump to conclusions" about the motives that impelled Nidal Hasan's rampage of mass murder at Fort Hood.

By the time Obama issued this warning, it had already been reported that Hasan yelled "Allahu akbar" before he opened fire. This assertion of the supremacy of Allah is invoked by Islamic terrorists worldwide before they kill.

It was also known that Hasan's fellow participants in an Army program on public health had complained to military authorities about Hasan's anti-American propaganda.Hasan had made a presentation that justified suicide bombing and argued that the war on terror is a war against Islam.

Yet no conclusions were warranted, as far as Obama was concerned."We cannot fully know what leads a man to do such a thing," our "philosopher in chief" intoned.

Obama has not always been cautious about jumping to conclusions. When a white police officer in Cambridge, Mass., arrested an African-American Harvard professor, the president was quick to proclaim that the officer had "acted stupidly."Obama was soon forced to back away from that statement, which was based on ignorance of the facts.

There is no underlying inconsistency between these seemingly divergent responses. Both are founded on the same antipathy Obama harbors toward America.

Obama prematurely concluded that the professor's arrest was improper because this conclusion comported with his view that American law enforcement officers habitually harass black Americans. In Hasan's case, it was imperative to resist the obvious connection between Islamism and the killings because, in Obama's view, Americans habitually are on the verge of persecuting Muslims.

As the president's wife once put it, America is "just downright mean."

Our malevolence is not confined to relations with our own minority groups, either. In our president's opinion, we are global miscreants.

For example, Obama has insisted that to compensate for our past arrogance, we need to negotiate, even absent any preconditions, with our worst enemies, including Iran.Applied to Russia, this has meant going hat in hand to the Kremlin and agreeing, among other concessions, to abandon missile defense for Russia's Eastern European neighbors in the hope of demonstrating that we have turned over a new leaf.

Obama must therefore believe thatthe thuggish, autocratic, expansionist Russian regime is more sinned against than sinning in its relations with the United States. But if Russia is our victim, are there any regimes as to which we hold the high moral ground?Judging by Obama's foreign policy to date, only Israel, Honduras, and perhaps Great Britain come to mind.

It might be argued in our defense that the United States faced down the Soviet Union, paving the way for the triumph of freedom in Central and Eastern Europe. But this fact apparently does not impress Obama. When heads of state gathered in Berlin last week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Obama was absent.

Obama did appear in Berlin via video. But the president omitted from his remarks any mention of the Soviet Union or communism, Harry Truman, or Ronald Reagan. As my blog partner Scott Johnson put it, Obama neither "decried the villains nor saluted the heroes of the story." That's because we were the heroes.

Obama reportedly is contemplating a visit to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. It's a long trip, but the venue is perfect for Obama's signature public hand-wringing on behalf of his country.

Obama's antipathy toward America should come as no surprise.Although he has lived a rich and varied life, there has been one constant - exposure to the left's disparaging narrative about America.

Obama grew up in a radically left-wing household, attended elite colleges where a jaundiced view of America is orthodox, and spent the remainder of his formative years as a community organizer alongside the likes of former domestic terrorist Bill Ayers and the "God d

America" ranting Jeremiah Wright.

No wonder Obama is serving up a "God d

American lite" presidency.

What will be the consequences of that presidency?Domestically, we can expect the president to continue trying to remodel the American economy along radical lines. And given his mistrust of his countrymen's instincts, we can expect attempts to curb personal freedom.

Fortunately, in the domestic realm, Obama cannot implement very much of this agenda without the "consent of the governed," as expressed through their elected representatives. Thus, Obama can be constrained. If the electorate chooses not to constrain him, he will have earned the right to work his radical transformation.

In the area of foreign and national security policy, however, Obama can operate largely unchecked. And a weak, guilt-ridden policy toward our foreign adversaries is almost certain to produce grave consequences.

To some extent, we have seen this act before. The damage of just four years of Jimmy Carter's America-effacing presidency included Soviet expansion, communist inroads in Latin America, the replacement of a friendly government with a virulently anti-American theocracy in Iran, and a prolonged hostage crisis that came to symbolize the new American impotence.

But although Carter was ambivalent about America, his efforts to promote democracy abroad showed that he thought we had something to offer to world.Obama will not grant America even that.

Emulating Carter the ex-president, rather than President Carter, Obama has shown essentially no interest in human rights or democracy promotion. His belated support of the Iranian protesters following this summer's election could hardly have been more lukewarm.

It seems that, in Obama's view, all we have to offer the world is our non-interference in its affairs, except perhaps when it comes to bullying our allies.

In the past, we have offered much more.We defeated fascism and communism, liberated Europe in two world wars, and took the lead in fighting back against Islamist extremism.

A country burdened by a battered self-image will be incapable of any such achievements. We will suffer for it, and so will the world.

Simple reasons for his dislike of us.
The way, where and by who he was raised.
That, followed by surrounding himself by other America haters as he grew older so as to reinforce his already tainted view.
Then he went to Harvard to wrap it all up.

I agree, he doesn't seem to like us one bit, especially our business leaders, doctors, and our own elderly citizens, with his cutting Medicare.....

He also hate us having access to our own natural resources and jobs.

I am on the edge of losing all hope that our country will continue to be the so called, land of opportunity!

It breaks my heart to see our country go down the tubes, all because it is being socially engineered by, not only Obama, but all the elites of this world!

I bet Obama's financial backer, George Soros, is very happy though!

This is a very scary and sad time we live in right now, thanks to Obama's American Idol moment with the young voters and winning by fame not qualification.
Daily something new and chilling comes out about him and this WH and the total lack of respect and belief in America and the constitution. He will not be re-elected but what he is doing will hurt this country for a very long time.

BO's antipathy towards America seems to know no bounds. He hates our history and all of our institutionts. He is said to be "post-racism". An individual once also called him "post-America". He is neither. He is a traditional Marxist and a man who will stop at nothing and do whatever it takes to bring about the "workers paradise" .....with HIMSELF in charge, of course.

Mirengoff's rant against President Obama is on a par with the ravings of Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, & Co. Obama is right in suggesting that final judgment of Major Hasan be withheld until FBI and military investigations are completed. The queston is not whether Hasan is a Muslim jihadist but but what exactly caused his behaviour. And the related question: Why have the vast majority of US Muslims remained good citizens and good and loyal members of US armed forces? Hasan is paralysed in a hospital and unable to run away. Let's let government investigators finish their work before we rush to judgment. Mirengoff, a clever lawyer, seems to be deliberately stoking the paranoid fires of unthinking anti-Obama extremism. Obama is neither un-American nor anti-American.

What has stuck in Mr. Mirengoff's craw is the fact that Obama had the audacity to challenge Israel on the settlements. Sacrebleu! According to Powerline ideology, Israel's actions are never questioned. The U.S. is simply supposed to keep those vetoes in the U.N. and dollars rolling on.

"Mirengoff, a clever lawyer, seems to be deliberately stoking the paranoid fires of unthinking anti-Obama extremism. Obama is neither un-American nor anti-American."
one: I don't believe you read his article and from your tone, I don't believe you would with an open mind. His points are very real--the President has acted inappropriately whether you care to see that or not. two: "...deliberately stoking the paranoid fires of unthinking anti-Obama extremism" You have no respect for others' critical thinking. You are arrogant and childish.

'..the vast majority of Muslims..'.

Are you serious? So due to the overwhelming majority of those not engaging in jihad, all's well?

Nonsense aside, thank you FOIA!

A D.C. mosque is being investigated for being a cover for Iranian interests. A Muslim school in Minnesota is funded by taxpayers.

How about the recently arrested Muslim from NY buying explosives from a CVS? These are instances that come to mind the last few months..

Ignorance is indeed bliss.

Traditionally a presidential candidate comes from a position of reverence and lover for the US. It has always been assumed that a candidate has deep love and respect for the country. In recent years the left has put forth candidates who are becoming overtly more anti-American. What seemed ludicrous for many democrat and independent voters was obvious to conservatives. He does NOT love and respect his country. He despises it and it's traditions. As it dawns on the millions what he really thinks, his approval ratings fall. As he hates the US, the people of the US will come to hate him. I despise the man as I have despised no other politician in my lifetime. It is as if we have elected the Premier of China to our highest office. He is that bad.

As a one-time Eisenhower Republican I am appalled by the vicious anti-Obama sentiments expressed above. Obama has done nothing to merit such scorn, especially after replacing the numbskull from Texas and his decadent cronies. Obama is our best bet to restore our country's tattered image and clean up the horrible messes left by his predecessors.

Don't you think its about time to stop using the term Marxist and start using Communist? It means exactly the same of course but the electorate seems confused. We are being led by a Communist now, and Communists have murdered over 200,000,000 million of their own citizens, China even sells their body parts after killing them. Become aware of what has happened and vote them out, do not become complacent, this is serious, these people are something other than the Democrats of old.

Bob

I never knew China had murdered 200 trillion of their own people. Do you have to be stark raving crazy to be a conservative these days?

"Obama is our best bet to restore our country's tattered image and clean up the horrible messes left by his predecessors."

How? The man is incapable of making a decision. So far all he has offered is empty words and dithering. After 8 years of a President who seemed incapable of self examination, we are witnessing a President capable of little else.

Bob, It is obvious that ronnor intended to say that the communists had murdered 200 million of their own people. And he did NOT say that the Chinese had done all the killing.
You seem to prefer personal attack. Is it because you can't argue against the facts and logical conclusions in the article?

Truly O does not like this country. It is hard to believe what damage he has done in the short period of time he has been in office. It scares hell out me to imagine what he will do in the near future. It seems he is definitely intent on socializing the country, and we all should be trying to educate the youth of the country relative to his distructive demeanor. There is hardly any question where he intends to take us.

Next will be putting the United States under a World Government run by the United Nations - good bye America. The answer is to VOTE ALL DEMOCRATS OUT OF OFFICE IN 2010!

Bob

Nov 16, 2009

GM, I know the 200,000,000 million was a mistake/mistype. As was ronner's entire comment. I will give him or her credit for not using all caps.

You want me to argue against the facts and logical conclusions that explain why Obama hates us? It would be like arguing with someone who believes the Earth is 6,000 years old. Mirengoff and his fans live in an alternate reality where facts and logic are so flexible that they can be easily twisted into whatever shape reinforces their preconceived notions.

What will the next outrage du jour be? Maybe Obama will put mustard on a hamburger again.

"It is as if we have elected the Premier of China to our highest office. He is that bad."

Actually, I'd prefer to have China's premier as President. He believes in capitalism and fiscal responsibility more than Obama does.

Bob, I didn't know America had 57 states either, but the Messiah-in-Chief did. Pardon a guy for typing too many zeros. That's common. Adding phantom states to the Union, well, you have to be the smartest, most noble man ever to make that mistake. And a Progressive to ignore it. Take the plank out of your own eye, before complaining about the spec in your brothers. But then, I guess there's no government program to make your neighbor do that work for you, so never mind.

As to your second comment, Bob, which facts are being twisted here, and where are the logical fallacies? Please cite and explain.

25% of the world economy is affected by the American consumer. In the end, will the world really agree with Obama's kill the golden goose fiscal, economic and tax policies? Kill the golden goose... he'd slit its throat then kick it to the edge of the cliff and finally kick it over.
Remember, he's only taxing the rich, and 95% of Americans are going to see lower taxes. He said no increases - of any kind.
Hey, how about GM - gov motors. 1.2 bil loss, oh but it's turning a corner. And they're paying us back - with other money they borrowed from us. Only the gov would see this as good.

Every time I read the comments of the people who think Obama is a Marxist and an America-hater, I feel like I'm peering into the vapid mind of Paris Hilton. People so spoiled by the immense security and prosperity of this country that they haven't got a clue what a real Marxist is or how someone who really "hated" America would act. In other words, people who would characterize a broken toenail as an unimaginable "tragedy".

Get out of the suburbs and visit some place else on planet earth, why don't you? And not just the cushy confines of a US military base overseas or a beach in the Caribbean, but some place where there is real hardship and awful government.

ADR DC

Nov 16, 2009

Cheers Matthew DC for your words! The tone of many of these comments is so extremely polemical, I think they show great ignorance on the part of their writers--how many indeed have seen or experienced life in other countries. Why should a president not acknowledge the misdeeds of his own country? It's not as if he fails to recognize the good as well. Many people have narrow ideas of what patriotism is. This is America, where we're privileged to be critical and vocal.
