Newt Gingrich: The new missiles of October

By: Newt Gingrich

In 1962, presented with U2 spy plane photos of Soviet missile sites in Cuba, President John F. Kennedy ordered his Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson, to directly confront the Soviets. At a tense emergency meeting of the Security Council, Stevenson exposed the Soviets denials as lies by showing the world the U2 photos.

In 2009, presented with evidence that Iran had concealed a nuclear weapons uranium processing plant, President Obama said nothing, giving Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a week at the U.N. to threaten Israel, deny the Holocaust and preen on the world stage with his fellow dictators.

History books look back in admiration at how President Kennedy faced down the Soviets during the Cuban Missile Crisis and brought the planet safely back from the brink of nuclear war.

It's worth pondering how the history books will treat Obama's handling of a similarly apocalyptic Iranian nuclear threat.

There's little doubt that Obama knew about Iran's secret uranium enrichment plant long before the opening of the U.N. Security Council session last week.

Armed with the knowledge that Iran is aggressively pursuing nuclear weapons and expecting Ahmadinejad and other world leaders in New York, what does the president do?

Does he use his first speech at the United Nations to speak out directly about the ongoing Iranian deception?

Does he, like Kennedy before him, share the photos of the nuclear processing facility?

Does he challenge the world to confront the fact that a Holocaust-denying nation, which has openly sworn to wage a war of total destruction, has lied to the world yet again, secretly developed a second processing facility and is taking us to the edge of nuclear war?

No, no and no.

Obama didn't do any of those things. Instead, he flinched. He exited the world stage in New York and went off to the G-20 meeting in Pittsburgh to announce the Iranian nuclear discovery.

And then, as if to underscore his timidity, the president traveled to Copenhagen to lobby on behalf of Mayor Daley to bring the 2016 Olympics to Chicago.

In the meantime, Iran was busy test firing the missiles that will carry the nuclear warheads it is developing.

We now know that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and especially French President Nicolas Sarkozy wanted to confront the Iranians at the United Nations last week with the knowledge of their second processing plant. Not only did President Obama not agree to that strategy, he went on to chair a phony (even for the U.N) Security Council session on nuclear disarmament of all things.

Apparently, a messy confrontation with Ahmadinejad over real nuclear disarmament would have upset the theatre of the president's posturing with world leaders over theoretical nuclear disarmament.

Obama's timid journey from New York to Pittsburgh to Copenhagen trivializes the American presidency. And much more seriously, it brings the world one step closer to the kind of global conflagration Kennedy so skillfully avoided 47 years ago.

The threat posed by nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran's Ahmadinejad is arguably graver than the threat posed by nuclear weapons in the hands of Cuba's Castro.

The Iranian leaders are driven by a theological messianism that is more dangerous and less predictable than Castro's charismatic communism. They have pledged to destroy Israel and retake Jerusalem. This is a pledge the United States must take very seriously. For if it happens, it will trigger a global war.

Obama came face-to-face with one of the world's most dangerous regimes last week. He had a chance to stand up to it. He had a chance to stop the march toward a nuclear Middle East.

It's hard to see how history fails to record that he blinked.

Timidity is to kind of word to describe Obama's actions.

He did not blink;he turned tail and ran.
Obama is the new Chamberlin. Obama acts as if he is teaching a seminar aChicago..rather than acting within a dangerous world. What surprise ? This is the man who said that the Constitution says what the government can not do rather than what it can do and this...as a criticism which he and his central government cronies are quickly seeking to change.
This lifelong Democrat .who did not support this Alynsyite..repudiates everything about this so called Chamberlin leader of the soon less and less free world.

If the worse thing Obama does is humiliate WE THE PEOPLE, well we are getting used to it. His danger is trusting Russia with Israel's security.

Only God and Mossad know Iran's true ambitions and activities...there has got to be a why they take out Damascus (Isaiah 17:1), maybe Syria is complicit, like Obama.

All Obama knows how to do is bash the United States. Our atheist communist Community Organizer in chief - what a colossal joke to have this weakling as our President.

I'm not real sure the "phoney in Chief" even knows where Iran is. In the case of his actions, they are just his doing what the "chicago gang" of Capone era great grand children ultra lefties direct him to do.
The next real idea he has will be number 1.

The fact the obama didn't do the right thing on national security (regarding iran) is not a surprise. We as conservatives need to get it through our heads that we should have no expectations of obama as not only is he weak he doesn't belong in the white house in the first place. He has no experience let alone appreciation of this country and its greatness. The next 3 years will be painful until he's thrown out in 2012. We'll just have to hope the next president can clean up the mess obama made.

Hey, writing in all caps like that sure makes you look rational, Sport. So does gratuitous lefty whining about Rush, Hannity, etc.
What does Iran, a country awash in oil, need another form of energy for? When you add the fact that Ahmamadhatterjad threatens his neighbors daily with annihilation, what's your conclusion there, genius? The threat needs to be eliminated before it becomes active, and our weakling president is not going to it.

History, it has been observed, is written by the victors. So, it seems likely that "History" will say, "Allah filled the infidel Obama's heart with fear".

LET'S NOT FORGET WHAT A SLAM DUNK THE INTELLIGENCE WAS LEADING UP TO THE IRAQ WAR (WHERE DID NEWT STAND ON THAT ONE?). AMERICA IS BROKE. A WAR WITH IRAN WILL ONLY HELP THOSE WHO VALUE $200/BARREL OIL.

Newt was wrong about Iraq in 2002 (see his article below from that time period), and he is likely wrong about Iran today.

Obama's policies, if adopted by Congress, will make the United States irrelevant on the world stage, from economic collapse, so everyone better get used to the bad guys running things. History is a cruel teacher, and we are in for a bitter lesson, about picking the weak and the foolish to lead us.

I spent 28 years training soldiers. Obama's policies may slow us up a bit or maybe damage parts of our economy and our foreign policy, but the great spirit of the American fighting man has not ended. We just need a President with the NADS to order what needs to be done. Obamanadless is not the one. Sarah Palin has more nads than our White House narcissist.

Mr. Gingrich,

If you read these comments please consider expanding and explaining more fully, in another article, your assertion; that should Iran destroy Israel and retake Jerusalem it would trigger a global war.

How Sir, do you reach that conclusion?

I can see how it might, ala a WWI scenario wherein the US, Russia, China, UK, etc. were inadvertently drawn into an all-out conflict but rather than a probable possibility, you assert that it would necessarily happen.

I'm not convinced that the tragic conflagration that would most certainly ensue between Iran and Israel... would necessarily or even in all probability lead to global conflict.

But I am certainly open to persuasion.

Exactly what has Iran done wrong? According to Newt"secretly developed a second processing facility."

Iran declared the site before the six month start of processing to the UN as in the treaty they have with the UN.

So unfortunately this article is misrepresenting the facts. This hub bub over Iran is misplaced and over the top. As one IEA agent who worked in Iran stated, on the News hour with Jim Moyer, that Irans nuclear program only became important to them when it became important to the West and the US. They are using it to get what they want. In other words they are using the American people through American politicians to get what they want because of political games and fear.

Iran had to badly photoshop pictures to show that they could launch 3 mid range missles at once, is this a country who is really a direct threat to the US or just another country who is threatening to stop trading oil in dollars? What is the real reason for the scare?
