Mark Tapscott: What next for the Middle America Rebellion of 2009

By: Mark Tapscott

September 17, 2009

A day before the event, organizers said a mere 20,000 or so folks had registered for Saturday's amazing 9/12 march on Washington to protest out-of-control government. What they got was hundreds of thousands of intensely patriotic people who came to the nation's capitol to yell "Stop!"

Whatever the number of attendees, this was possibly the most significant Washington protest since the civil rights movement's epic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Indeed, about all that was lacking was a charismatic leader like Dr. Martin Luther King to deliver an "I have a dream" address for the ages.

As the 1963 gathering meant America's blacks would no longer accept second-class citizenship, Saturday's march was the leading edge of the fabled Silent Majority that is silent no longer. That ought to give President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reason to sit down and rethink everything they think they know about the American people.

And the same applies, but even more so, for Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Minority Leader John Boehner.

To hasten that much-needed reappraisal by official Washington, here are some clues: Most Americans never were as gullible as you thought, they just didn't pay you that much attention. They are now, as never before. They no longer have an unbending loyalty to any person or political party in Congress or the White House. And they aren't going to be silent any longer.

Things are different now. As Shannon Love noted on theChicago Boyzblog:

"Getting hundreds of thousands of kids, the professionally unemployed, and government workers to show up isn't that hard [especially if someone buys the bus tickets]. Getting two million middle-class, middle-aged people with jobs, careers, children and businesses is way, way more impressive.

"We can safely assume that for every individual who made it to the protest that there are dozens of people whose grown-up obligations prevented them from attending.

"That thought should keep Obama and Pelosi up at night."

Congratulations to the 9/12 organizers, including Fox News' Glen Beck, FreedomWorks.org, Tea Party Patriots, Resist.Net, and a huge informal coalition of conservative, libertarian and populist citizen groups across the country.

Now, the crucial question is what comes next for Middle America Rebellion of 2009. Two weeks ago in this space, I suggested the primary focus should be on replacing Congress in 2010 by electing candidates from either or any party who support a basic platform that earns them a Tea Party endorsement, or seal of approval.

While I didn't then and don't now claim to have a magic formula for making that happen, I suggested that two essential elements are a constitutional amendment for term limits and a binding pledge to balance the federal budget without tax increases.

Recalls are associated with initiatives and referendums, two reforms associated with the Progressives of the early 20thcentury. More recently, there is a renewed interest on the Right in these processes, as seen in theBallotpedia.orgweb site, and the work of Paul Jacobs and theCitizens in Charge Foundation.

The Founders would reject a recall because their intent was to blunt and deflect transient majorities from being too easily able to impose their will on a vulnerable minority, With representatives facing voters every two years, a recall on them would probably be extraneous.

But the Founders never envisioned a deeply entrenched political class using its accumulated powers of incumbency to hamstring a vulnerable majority. Now, as the Middle America Rebellion of 2009 grows more self-aware and focused via the Internet, a way to recall a senator or a president might be worth a look.

Just having such a national discussion will have a salutary effect.

I have been pondering the same thing- there must be some way to do a recall of elected federal officials...

I was there. I am a 56-year-old computer scientist, married 32 years, raised two children, followed the law and haven't cheated on my taxes. I belong to no organization and was not invited by anyone. I flew to the event from the California desert.

Outstanding suggestion that future candidates seek a tea party endorsement. That is precisely what is needed.
I was not able to go to D.C. on 9/12, but I did attend a solidarity event in NW Arkansas that had over 500 attendees. It was terrific and, believe me, we were with the folks in Washington.

Yes, a TEA party endorsement is needed for any viable candidate.
We were not in Washington DC for the same reason Grayson was not. We held a solidarity event in NW Minnesota and also had over 500 attendees.

Perhaps we should go back to having senators appointed by their state legislatures.

Just want to add a comment on all the charges of "racism" leveled at tea partiers and the 9/12 marchers. My nephew is a grad of West Point as is his wife. He is white, she is black, both are Christian conservatives.
If anyone is interested in listening to one heck of a 9/12 speech that says it all, I suggest listening to the one delivered by Rev. C.L. Bryant, which can be found at www.teapartypatriots.org.
Every accusation of racism leveled at opponents of Obama and his administration and policies rings more hollow and absurd than the one before. In truth, it's the last, pathetic, weak cry of individuals, including those in the MSM, who have lost all other arguments.

I think we should have constitutional classes and certification for any candidate running for office. Let them prove they have read and understand the Constitution they swear to uphold.

I suggest that we ramp it up next time. Return to DC this time bearing the same sign YOU'RE FIRED. Then ring the Capitol, 5 deep, 10 deep, whatever it takes. Do you think that might get anyone's attention?

AN ASIDE: Matt Damon's movie The Informant comes out on the 18th -- tomorrow. Remember how he savaged Sarah Palin in an interview during the campaign? Turns out that "Everyman" is an Elitist after all. I'll take a pass on the movie. "Taking them down -- One elitist at a time."

The 9/12 demo in Washington was far less important than last November's elections, which repudiated the 8-year Bush/Cheney/Rove misadventure and brought Obama and the Democrats to power. The 9/12 affair was largely stimulated artificially by the Limbaughs, Becks and their fatcat conservative backers who were repudiated last year by the voters.

The real majority

Sep 17, 2009

The real majority, not the majority of white, middle-class, middle-aged americans, still support the President. This is a homogenious group, and a shrinking portion of the population. This editorial is a dillusion, making it seem like 2010 and 2012 will bring these huge changes that this specific group of people support...you probably think it's already set in stone Obama is a one-termer, right? Yet, he is still averaging the exact same polls numbers as he was on Election Day (52.1%), and ended up getting a slightly higher percentage of the vote when it was all said and done (52.9%) according to realclearpolitics.com. Obama hasn't lost the support of those who elected him to office

Attended DC March with my husband...it was the most patriotic experience we have experienced. We will push for Tea Party endorsement for all candidates...

LightSaber...thanks for the infomation on Matt Damon. So much goes on that we forget who did what. Hope to see a site that reminds us which "entertainer" said or did what to lead this country to hell. If anyone knows of such a site please pass it on to us.

I love to hear the Liberals use the same argument over and over and over again... Bush/Cheney put us here; it's artificial being pushed by Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, and the Conservative Corporate Fatcats... and now, they are using Racism (their last resort). You can give the Liberals facts, and they come back screaming Racism. They are nothing more than little kids and we, THE PEOPLE, are smacking their little hands. All of us don't care if you are Liberal, Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Republican, Conservative, or whatever you call yourselves... We want people who will hold the Constitution close to their hearts and govern by that document! No more trying to sidestep it, or interpeting it into your own views.. But govern by what IT says! It's written in plain english!

As one of those with "grown up obligations", I wasn't able to make it. I agree that we need to come up with a seal. Recalls are not a bad idea; I have been thinking that for a while. It tells the politicians that if they won't do the peoples' business, they will feel the peoples' boot.

To the posters who say Obama still has the majority - you are simply wrong. In fact, I believe so much of the last election was based on fraud. I have very little faith in those who count votes especially in Democratic controlled areas, one area which actually denied white people the right to vote (story got buried as usual). Obama got elected because of the color of his skin - he is the face of the left for their programs - they chose him to be able to use the race card when confronted on leftist policies. Smart move, but it is wearing thin now. Chicago thugs were able to buy off the election as they did back in 1960.

I too have been wondering why we should wait till 2010 - That mess in Washington is not going to get better, it's more likely to get worse and we need to act now!

As for the March on Washington, my husband and I were unable to make the trek to Washington. However, we did attend an event in our area, Temecula, CA. It was our first so did't really know what to expect. The numbers easily numbered around 2000! It was very exciting to see and meet people that feel the same way we do!

I am a 73-year old grandmother who marched in Washington, along with my husband. We have never done anything like this before, but we will be in this until the end, either ours or theirs. I was never more proud of this country and the people. Obama and the Democrats are trying to destroy this country, the land of the free and home of the brave. Just remember the band of patriots who took on the biggest army in the land and defeated them over 200 years ago. We must not stop until these criminals are gone from Washington.

How dare you compare this KKK influenced rally to Martin Luther King and the 1963.. I was there too. So was my friend who it black and had to leave because of the hateful stares and the shameful signs. Moreover, no Republican leader admonishes this behavior. You say “possibly the most significant Washington protest since the civil rights movement's”. Are you mad? I live a few blocks from there and believe me there were not hundreds of thousands of folks. More like 75 thousand. The crowd only went to 3rd street and surrounded a huge reflecting pool. You compare Beck a man who used the 9/11 victims to capitalize and fill his pockets and called the president a racist who hates whites to get you angry to MLK? I can’t believe the lies this paper publishes.

Sep 17, 2009

We drove to the event (1-days drive each way). 450 buses came from as far away as California and other attendees flew in from as far as Hawaii and Alaska. It was finally determined by air analysis that 1.7 million were in attendance which makes this the largest event of its kind, ever. Not bad considering that everyone paid their own way unlike Obama’s inauguration where ACORN bussed in the masses at taxpayer expense. The people I met were very informed and knew the facts about their concerns It was a great event and judging by the people, whom I met, they were fairly evenly represented by Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike. But we were no party, we were simply Americans truly fed up with the corruption that is our Government. Next year, if we don’t see the reform we demand we will be back with another 2, 4 or 6 Million. Can you hear us now Obama?

I was there at the 9/12 march with my son. Together we had over 20 family and a clean 30 friends that supported us. We flew at my personal expense, vacation days, and enjoyed meeting our fellow Americans. We don't belong to any groups/orgs or any of that sort of thing. I've been shouting at my TV for years. Now I'm directing it towards the elected servents.

I met people of all races/creeds/political parties and backgrounds. There were no altercations, they cleaned up and generally had a great outlook.

The white house had better realize the chicago way is not our way....

Thanks to all that showed up, I look forward to seeing my new friends next year too.

PS Thank a vet for your freedom.

I could not go to Washington, but we held a Tea Party in support of the Washington effort here in Reno. We had 85 people on a late Saturday afternoon with cloudy skies, high winds and the threat of rain. We need a 'No Incumbent" movement in the United States.....vote them ALL out.

This editorial hits the nail squarely on the head. Both my husband and I marched on 9/12 representing family and friends in over six states from California, Texas, Washington, Nevada, Hawaii and so on. We have never been visibly political but we vote in every election. We are fed up with everybody in Congress! We are looking for a few good people to represent US and the values this country was based on. Lets get back to civility, trust, honesty, and taking cares of ourselves and our neighbors according to our own abilities. Enough with greed, power, arrogance and hubris in dealing with each other. We need a strong defense, a balanced budget and a sound government of the people for the people and by the people!

If we don't get term limits, I'd like to see an age limit for Congress. Having invalids in Congress is insulting to the people they represent (Kennedy and Byrd are 2 examples). Maybe not allowing anyone to run for office after the age of 65. I would also like any Congressman who is unable to fulfill their obligations for 4 months or longer have to resign their office. We deserve competent representatives.

My family drove 4.5 hours and our local Tea Party had 13 buses drive down. It was thrilling to see so many Americans march for liberty! We all thought there were only a handful of us for all these years that we've been yelling at our TVs. Now that we know we're not alone - WATCH OUT! We will not let liberty die! If defending liberty for everyone in this nation means I'm racist, then so be it. Call me a proud racist.

If you want to see a way that we can begin the Recall process based on our Right in the Declaration of Independence, with a Recall of elected officials State by State based on the Constitutional concept of State Sovereignty, and then using perhaps the Ballot Initiative and Referendum process eventually, then go here. http://www.avoiceofthepeople.com

Freedoms Voice

I can't figure out why a Governor and a State Legislature would not want to be able to recall those from their State that are in the National government when they pass or sign off on legislation that takes away State Sovereignty, and their Sovereigns, the People. It's no different than the unconstitutional appointment of the Czars taking the place of Congress. Why does the whole lot of them stand for taking away their political power and position, and not rather throw the whole bunch of Czars out on the a##es??? http://www.avoiceofthepeople.com

I was not able to attend in DC ut have attended here in Az. The DC creeps and libs as well as the new fringe media are running scared and they will try to discredit the DC march as a one time event and so to continue to ignore "we the people". We must keep the momnentum or we will fail and every thing will continue " business as usual". Even today Time magazine has Glen Beck on the cover in a fashion as to discredit him, calling him a mad man or a clown! They will begin to tear down the" attendess od the DC March as crazy white racist old people" too, just watch. With the breaking of the ACORN story, they are in chaos and that is dangerous. Any animal cornered is dangerous, don't underestimate the fring emedia or the DC Creeps! USA USA!

The next battle for the not only the middle class but for all Americans should be the question of amnesty for illegals. BHO in a recent speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute stated, "if anythiing, this debate (healthcare reform)underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million (more like 20 t0 25 million)undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all." Last week Joe Wilson called BHOs bluff. BHO didn't use the buzz word "undocumented" as he did in front of this hispanic group. He strictly used the term illegal. We have to keep our eye on the ball. BOHICA. Without making our voices heard, they (liberals, socialists and progressives)will attempt to drive an amnesty bill down our throats. Then America will never be the same. The genie will not be able to put us back in the bottle.

Term limits for 'public servants' can be solved at the ballot box at local, state and federal levels.

OUR 'public servants' will be vetted, selected and elected to office by "WE THE PEOPLE..." to OUR governance of the people, by the people and for the people at local, state and federal levels!

OUR 'public servants' WILL do precisely that...SERVE "We the people...!"

OUR 'public servants' WILL always vote for what is best for "We the People..." and our country!

If this is accomplished OUR 'public servants' will NOT need to bother campaigning for reelection..."We the People..." WILL reelect them to office!

IF NOT...no amount of money, power and campaigning will get the 'politician' reelected to any 'political office'!

"We the People..." will require and demand paper ballots, photo proof of identification and a bonafied, legal address to vote!

Blah, blah, illegals, blah, blah. I hire illegal gardeners and nannies and escort girls. I also hire illegals for my business, which has $50 million in annual revenues. Great article. I like the idea of supporting only those whose platform is term limits and balanced budget. We cannot sustain any momentum if we break off into a 3rd party. When the pendulum shifts too far into our direction, they'll desert the sinking ship they're currently on and jump on our bandwagon as ifthey've been with us the whole time. At this point, I don't know who I trust less. The lying politicians, or the media that willfully hides the truth and misdirects the public? Truly a sickening situation. So, in reality that number in Washington, DC should be tripled or quadtripled. I guess we are just going to have to ALL COME UP THERE!

I was not able to attend the Rally in DC but did attend the Rally in Fort Worth. There were citizens of all races that attended. There were not any signs that promoted any racism. It disturbs me that we are portrayed as racists when we are only exercising are 1st amendment rights. The rising level of frustration in our country is due to the fear we are losing our freedom and we are continually portrayed as something evil or negative. I am only protesting the current adminstrations dangerous policies. OBAMA please listen to the people!!! Is is 2010 yet?

Hello people...you all talk like you are the only citizens in this country. 1/2 of us think you are all cooks! How stupid that you devote your efforts to teaparties instead of debate.

This is really very simple.
Country First!
If it isn't in the Constitution, it isn't legal. It doesn't matter what some appointed Judge thinks. Now let the water flow in Cal and the little fish sink or swim.

greg, What the dems and their sheep news media is attempting to do compares to the holocaust. They are undoing all that MLK accomplished for race relations but they will not take the blame for it when they incite riots in the streets. So you just keep screaming racists as a means of getting your political agenda through and you remember what I said. You reap what you sow ladies and gents and I would think that you do not want to go down in the history books, that we will write this time, as the great divider, that destroyed race relations in the USA and caused blood to flow in the streets. You are supposed to be educated people, sooooo... I suggest you start thinking before you spew the racism verbage. He knows not what he does.... will not wash!!!!

I didn't get to go, but my in-laws and daughter went to the Washington 9/12 march. My daughter was scared because she had never been in a crowd like that. Americans really came together to protest big money, big bailouts for Wall$treet, and big government. But what bothers me is that while so many of us scream for a smaller government that spends less, no one has put forth a vision of what a smaller government looks like. True debate over what the Government should do and should not do in the 21st Century has been stiffled by our leaders and by our parties. Everyone in Washington wants to play the big money, big government game albeit for different reasons. No wonder middle America feels left out in the cold. I really do think the Founding Fathers, even those that championed a strong national government, would be appalled by what we have now. We need to take a hard look at ourselves-- just what do we want government to do-- and we need to keep pushing Washington to listen.

I am one of those who took time from work and family, and one who could ill-afford the cost, to attend the March on Washington. Knowing that it will be again needed, I am saving and planning to do so again. Timw conservatives are heard!!\

P.S. I have a great representative in Mike Pence.

Conservatives need to stress the point that the White House, House and Senate are controlled by the Democrats. They do not need Republicans or Independents to pass legislation. We are obstructing nothing. Stand upand say so.

Even if it were 1.5 - 2 million people in attendance you still are only a fraction of the the US population. Less than 1 percent.

Good luck with that one, most people don't even know who you are or what your are doing, in fact, even if you showed up with 5 million people you would just be breaking 1% of the US population in support of your cause. The numbers aren't adding up folks.

Again, ask the normal person on the street or at your job and you will find they haven't heard of this "Tea Party" movement. If they have, they simply chuckle unless they are involved in it.

I admire all those who descended on our nation's capital this past week - you exemplified one of the fundamental rights afforded to the citizens of our great nation. Well done. However, it seems that while you possess enthusiasm and spirit in spades, you lack focus and leadership. Unfortunately, in this modern political arena, you need a unified voice to reach the majority.
At this point, you are not the majority. Democrats (elected by the people) control every major institute of government. More importantly, I have yet to hear a Republican leader come forth to show support for your march.
I pose this simple question - What is your message and who will bring that message to the masses? Until everyone who went to that march can provide the same answer to that question, I'm afraid you are lost.

I went to D.C. for the march. We who went really know how many were there,75,000 my eye!I've never seen so many people of different ages, races and party affiliation in one place.I was even prouder of my attendence there than the time I served in the U.S.A.F.
I've never been prouder of my fellow Americans.Names don't bother me, the Tories called the Founding Fathers names worst than these as they cowardly chose security over liberty, clueless of it's meaning and the sacrifices required to aquire liberty or retain it.
I went because I can't comprehend how my state went from the Boston Tea Party,Bunker Hill, and the "Shot heard 'round the world" at Concorde to being represented by the likes of John Kerry,Barney Frank, and Ted Kennedy!
Thank you to all who attended literally and in spirit! See you next year. Remember,"When people fear the government, there is tyranny,When the government fears the people, there is LIBERTY!

want to know how to get rid of these commi and fascist reps and the president. the is a law the Communist Control act that states that any communist or progressive who meets with other communist regimes like the black caucus who met with Fidel castro or that threatens our republic shall not hold office. The Communist Control Act signed into law by Eisenhower is a law to protect America for anyone who holds high office and threatens our republic. It is a law and shall be exercised. Write you congress and tell them you will sign petitions to exercise this law to recall the President, Maxine Waters, Pelosi, REid and anyone else who touts this fascist crap.

In April of 2009, there were hundreds of Tea Party Protests with tens of thousands of conservative and libertarian attendees protesting the size and over-taxation of and by our government. No cars were overturned, no pepper spray was deployed by riot police, and no buildings were burned. (Source: Complete lack of any stories about this)

I was there. I am a 46 year old physician, married and had to leave the 2 kids with the grandparents in order for the wife and I to go. I was neither recruited to go nor paid anything to attend; actually paid my own way. I wore a t-shirt signed by 50 like minded Hoosiers that weren't able to attend.

Dorra, You called us cooks and said we were stupid--did you, oh Miss Smartee Pants, mean kooks? The March on 9/12 was an unbelievable success and message to this administration. It's up to the President, his "czars," and Congress to decide whether to listen to the message or not. There's no need to make a prediction for the 2010 election. Time will tell but most everyone I know says that corrupt politicians will be "fired" on that day and replaced with candidates with ethics and principles based on the founders documents. They--and we--know who they are.

I was there with my sister & brotherinlaw. Felt great, I was very proud. I agree with the idea of going back to the original idea in the constitution. Let the governor appt. from his party the congressional senators. Change govs, change reps; they have to live by rules they pass!

Nothing wrong with illegals

Sep 21, 2009

Blah, blah, illegals, blah, blah. I hire illegal gardeners and nannies and escort girls. I also hire illegals for my business, which has $50 million in annual revenues. I'm so sick and tired of low-income whiners. Free inflows of labor benefit holders of capital--that's standard economic theory. I am a capitalist, so I'm in favor of illegals. I'm actually a major contributor to conservative causes.

Congressmen get corrupt just being around the corruption in DC. We need term limits but they wilol never do that to themselves. Do it at the State level. Each of the 50 States must pass term limits and that CAN be done.

Most significant protest

Dec 2, 2009

Without doubt this was the most significant Washington protest since the civil rights marches in 1963. I was there with Hornby Trains and felt a great deal of solidarity with my fellow protesters.

Dec 2, 2009

i support people who want to protest - that's great. i don't necessarily agree with the idea that taxes cannot be increased. "taxes" encompass so many things and as our nation's needs grow and evolve we have to have the flexibility to fund them. but we cannot forget the best way to get what we want done is through the vote. disagree with what the government is doing? get rid of your representatives.
