What Scoop Jackson knew

By: James Carafano
Examiner Columnist
June 8, 2009

There may never be another Scoop. Once upon a time Washington had many leaders who put national security before their politics. Henry “Scoop” Jackson stood at the top of the class.

Serving in the Senate from 1953 to his death 30 years later, no one worked harder than the Democrat from Washington State to provide for the common defense. “His core convictions about foreign policy and national security affairs derived largely from the lessons of World War II,” wrote biographer Robert G. Kaufman, “the folly of isolationism and appeasement, the importance of democracies remaining militarily strong and standing against totalitarianism, and the need for the United States to accept and sustain its pivotal role as a world power.”

These convictions often brought Jackson into conflict with other leaders of his own party.  He bucked President Johnson, for example, to become one of the earliest congressional advocates of building missile defenses.

Of course, the Democrats could boast of many defense-savvy senators back then.  Stuart Symington of Missouri was one.  No wallflower he.  As a freshman senator, Symington had shouted down Joe McCarthy in one of “Red-Baiter” Joe’s televised hearings:  “Let me tell you, Senator [McCarthy], that I’m not afraid of you. I will meet you anytime, anywhere.”

Symington was a zealous advocate for the Air Force. Throughout his Congressional career, he also dedicated himself to building-up the U.S. nuclear deterrent against the Soviets.

It has been a long-time, however, since “hawks” roosted among the Democratic leaders in Washington. And these days, visionary national security leadership has been scarce on the Republican side as well.

Thus, the national security speech given last week at DC’s Navy Memorial by former Massachusetts governor and presidential primary candidate Mitt Romney came as a breath of fresh air.  At times it seemed as though Romney were channeling Scoop Jackson.

“Providence has blessed us and trusted us to safeguard liberty,” Romney declared.  “In a time of confusion at home and challenge abroad, let ours be the voice of clarity and good sense—confident in our cause, and faithful in the care of freedom.”

Romney also did something no Democratic or Republican leader has done convincingly in recent memory: make a rationale, compelling case that now is not the time to be cutting back on defense spending.

“The right way to scale America’s defense budget is to add up the requirements for each of our missions,” he pointed out. “When I add up the demands of all these defense missions, I do not come up with budget cuts. As a simple matter of budget mathematics, we cannot fulfill our military missions without an increase of $50 billion per year in the modernization budget.”

Romney then turned the budget guns on DC: “The current leadership in Washington is hardly in a position to complain about the cost of the defense budget. Over the last few months, it has passed measures that will add almost $4 trillion to the national debt…. None of that money was spent on increasing the defense modernization budget—a failure that history will never understand or excuse.”

Romney may be starting a trend. Newt Gingrich has scheduled a major national security speech for early July. These voices, however, are too few and far between. Any list of rising Republican stars shows few with a track record on national security issues. The Democratic bench is even emptier.

All this is troubling.  The world does not become safer in turbulent times.  In the decade ahead—we will need more clear-headed leadership on national security issues—not less.

Administration officials have paired back missile defense, promised to cut the nuclear arsenal, and cancelled next-generations weapons program… all based on the premise that they will negotiate a safer future for America.

But, what if that premise is wrong? Apologies may not disarm our enemies. UN resolutions may not dissuade them. And if the gutting of the Pentagon continues, we may be unable to stop them with force.

Two days ago we observed the 65th anniversary of D-Day. Republicans and Democrats should spend more time reflecting on the lessons to be learned from the storming of the Normandy beaches.

Leaders like Scoop Jackson knew those lessons by heart.  They understood that the price of freedom is the willingness to defend it.

Mitt Romney is the complete package! The guy is simply amazing, and if we know what is good for this country we'll stand behind him as he brings us back to even greater heights of being the great nations we can be. God bless America.

There was a time when Democrats cared about social injustice but still felt it was wise to secure our national interests through appropriate military strenght. I remeber as an eleven boy in 1976 learning about Scoop from my Father who was also a product of the Depression and WWII. Scoop ran for President and my Father approved of him. 76 would mark the last time my Father and Mother would vote democrat. It is so unfortunate that the message of Scoop, President Reagan and President Teddy Roosevelt are lost on most of todays pols. As that period from 76 to 80 and of course that period of non involvement during Hitler's rise taught us we can take notheing for granted. I am so thankful that the framers of our constitution were smart enough to pace congress elections every two years and our Presidential contest every four. The current administartion and congress will have to reconcile with the people soon. Let's just hope it is not tooo late!

What do you expect from a president who hates America, probably has a Muslim upbringing, and just may not be an American citizen? To date, what one positive thing has he accomplished? Don't count bankrupting our country!

I believe with all of my heart this administration is disarming America. We are on the border line of surrender by default due to the neglect and terrible choices that we are, and have put forth as honorable men, expecting unhonorable men to abide.

We may as well saddle up, because if we deplete our military(which the left is doing) we will be attacked again in the "Pearl Harbor" style, and then it will be just like 1941---we really won't be ready, but we'll have to fight or die. I just hope there's a president that won't wave the white flag like the one we have now.

Male politicians in Congress today suffer from the "rubber ball" syndrome where they need to bounce from one issue to another, careful not to offend and/or alienate any future support for re-election. On most issues, they ride the fence waiting to see which way the wind blows. Unfortunately, concern for the American people and/or their rights as citizens, falls far down on their list of priorities. Always on the fence, they need the rubber balls.

It is too bad that every-one has not yet figured out the Obama Agenda. I've been saying this since way before the election and no one would listen. Obama never left his Islamic beliefs behind and converted to Baptist. He was taught from the Islamis scriptures and fully believes them today. Cut defence , over spend and drive the U.S. to the breaking point and turn Americans againts each other. How do you bring down a country as strong as America. You destroy it from with-in. You take over Banks and Companies and drop Defence spending while escalating nonsence spending. You tell the world how sorry you are. We're sorry... We wo'nt do it again..) This Idiot has got to go. Come on 2012......

The real missal nuclear threat, more than likely, will come from a non-nation identified source. Without an effective missal defense system we may be vulnerable. The administration may be inclined to believe that no nation is about to attack us due to our present global business mutual interests. But, those who we should hear the most are the entities that have nothing to lose economically, i.e., radical islamic interest groups.

Terry, The onus is on us to reach out and support Governor Romney and otthers through their pro American PACs. We must also build our network as freedom loving Americans who see this fool Obama's folly. His economic policies arfe already problematic. Oil is skyrocketing because his policies have so bloodied the dollars value that the fear of inflation has caused the price to shoot up. Which of course begets inflation through higher energy and transportation costs and thus becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. We must target every democratic member of congress and Senator that is in a borderline districy and tell them that we vote and we intend to see them defeated if they surrender our liberties to this communist aganda. Look up an article that was in the Russian newspaper "Pravda" on how we have surrendered our capitalisim without a whimper. It will send ice water through you system. The Gipper must be rolling over!

What else could we expect from a "progressive politician" ? Socialism ? Facism ? Or worse ? We are experiencing the planned destruction of America. Apparently, by design. Hopefully we can stop him in time, if we wake up and care. Otherwise, I fear we are doomed by own complacency.

Since Scoop Jackson was railroaded out of the senat there has not really been a true leader who put country first. John McCain came close, but he is still a politician, and has acted like one. I wish we could put our finger on what has happened to this country over the past 10 or 20 years. Perhaps Vietnam is to blame, but who can say. Hopefully the Iraq war will have produced a new generation who put country and service first instead of politics. We can only hope and pray.

Another great Democrat who championed national defense in the other house was Rep. Sam Stratton of NY. Where are Our Leaders? Is everyone either in Love with Obama or deathly afraid of Him? Obama is destroying Our Country. He is Destroying Our Military. Most of Our Soldiers deny Obama as TTheir 'Comander in Chief'. How far down will America have to go before something is done? He has brought us to the brink bankruptcy as a Nation. He has purposely brought us to moral bankruptcy with His Anti-Christian, Pro-Muslim, and Socialistic agenda. I Pray for an awakening of American Values and Faith in God. I also Pray that God provide America with Real American Leaders that will once again return America to God's Grace and Protection. Only then will the United Staes again regain Our staus as the Leader of the WORLD. Until We do this, and Remove Obama and the Liberal Left, America will continue Its slide into Self Destruction. Obama Has to GO!

An old statement you'll hear in the military ... if a country is good enough to live in, it's good enough to fight for. The trouble is, this country is rapidly becoming not good enough to live in. Our enemies have been destroying it from within for at least 25 years now and there's not much left. Personally, I'd be happy to see a group of states secede. Barring that, I'd be content to see the country fail so that those of us with any guts and determination at all can boot the culprits out of this country altogether, pick up the pieces, and begin again as our forefathers intended it. I'll settle for The New United States of America.

There is no one leading the opposition to Obama and the robotic puppets of the democrat congress. The Republicans and those conservatives among them have no intestinal fortitude to stand up for the American people on a daily basis. There is no passion, no anger, and no disdain for the ideology being shoved down our throats. These people need to understand that there are more than 48 million people who are with them but we don't have a platform to speak from. They do and they don't speak. What words that do arise from their lungs to their lips are softly spoken and monotone in style often boring and putting the audience to sleep. WAKE UP, CONSERVATIVES!! I couldn't agree more about the dearth of Congressional and Senatorial leadership in keeping our country militarily strong. We MUST remain strong; no other country in the Free World has the capability to stand against all the evil forces that now exist, and we're steadily losing that capability, thanks to the Democrats...and a lot of Republicans, too. The "us vs. them" mentality that exists in D.C. is really hurting the military; we need to spend the additional $$ that Mitt Romney mentioned just to stay even with the threats that are now arrayed against us, much less improve our position. Is SOMEONE going to do something before it's too late? Obama is concerned only with his image, and that won't do any good. God help us! ...but we have to help ourselves first!

It's time we dumped the Republican and Democratic brands and become just plain old Americans doing what is right for the country. Dump the wedge issues and concentrate on national security, the economy and its true stimulation. Drill here, drill now and pay less will help stimulate the economy and provide for the common defense. This should include a strong stance on immigration reform and address the true impact it has on our economy. I've lived in California my entire life and you can't tell me it hasn't impacted our economy and values. I don't care what Arnold thinks. We need to take the original prop 187 to the supreme court as we should have years ago. This is not to be construed as racist but as someone who believes in fiscal responsibility.

It's about time the Republican Party become vocal and act now to get the needed financing for our military, or they may have to find a new career in the next election; it's time for them to represent the people who elected them, not for political gain. If they can't stand up and speak for us, what are they worth to those who voted for them? WE NEED OUR MILITARY!

Romney understands that if we do not defend America, nothing else matters. I told people before the election that Obama would destroy the country. He is succeeding economically. He said before the election he would cut SDI, the totally wrong thing to do with real threats from Iran and N. Korea. There used to be Democrats that would never have supported any part of the Obama agenda. Today, the Democrats are controlled by the ACLU. Do a little research and it will become obvious that both parties endorse the Progressive approach to running the country. In addition, all politicians know that the system is so screwed up that to fix it will be a massive endeavor and burden upon them, so...they do what is human nature...they take the easy way out and do nothing hoping that they won't ever have to deal with it and if they do have to, at least it won't be today! The FairTax, HR 25 and S296 [ http://www.fairtax.org ], will solve the majority of our financial problems but I don't believe the current bunch in DC want that solution even though it will give them more money to spend than they could ever imagine, while also giving ALL the rest of us more money to spend than we could ever imagine. How can our representatives in WDC blatantly cut the funds for missile defense? If we aren't able to defend ourselves from our enemies, what does it matter if we have the "greenist" continent and the cleanest energy and universal health care? Do those maniacs in WDC not know that if we don't defend ourselves we won't have any choices about anything. Our freedoms are gradually getting taken from us as it is from within but at least we can fight back but if the North Koreans, the Iranians, the Russians, the Chinese, or whoever decide to take us over it'll be too late if we don't prepare to defend ourselves now. I remember how it was before December 7th and we won that war because the Americans back then were a different breed from the ones we have now. We had a few more God fearing people who prized their freedom at any cost.

It is my belief that the number one reason for the federal government to be in existance is to maintain a military to protect us from foreign threats. Everything else is secondary. If we are not secure then all else is lost if we are attacked. The Federal government is failing to meet this main demand. Its time for all like minded people to unite against the weakening of our military.

Too bad, As this President is giving us away day by day and soon we will all wonder where in the hell America went and it will be too late do recover. Her answer was that the budget is too small for domestic terrorist attacks and the need to increase port security. She down played the need for the expensive missile defense systems. I wrote back to Sen. Feinstein that she had the priorities upside down. This is NO time to cut back on missile defense. Both missile defense & port security are needed. We won't have a second chance if a nuke missile strikes us and or our allies. The let down of the Obama Administration to Israel is inexcusable. Out of control spending on pork issues, bailouts of auto manufacturers and statist health care are not as important as the defense of our country.

Yes, Senator "Scoop" Jackson was one of the better Senators in the country when it came to national security and missile defense. He was a Senator that Washington state could be proud of.I wish we had a few Senators like him today.

I am so angered and disappointed in the "conservative" party! When did they have their backbones removed? Is it possible for those in charge to call a special nation-wide election so we voters can make a clean sweep of these beltway fools until 2010? I have read that there are a number of Socialists' in Congress. If that is true, can they legaly be removed? With BO in the Oval Office he dosn't need any extra help destroying our beloved country. I wish the entire lot of them could be impeached so we could be done with them. Every day I feel ill since elction night. God help us all - He is the only one who can.I'll end now because I don't want to spread the gloom any more than I have. Waiting for heros, Pauline

I am a proud American. I am someone who has not forgotten about how early Americans paid a bloody price to secure our freedom from Tyranny several decades ago. Like the brave heros who won our independence, we have had many men and women sacrifice life and limb since to continue to fight for the one thing that should matter to all of us most of all - Freedom. The hard left of this country, of whom Barack Obama is a part, have no true understanding or appreciation of what freedom really means or that you must fight for and defend the right to maintain it. It is the only way to explain why they would take the cavalier and reckless approach to our nations defense and the role we play in a stable world. If they really understood it they would never handle things the way they are. I only pray the citizens of this country wake up from their hope and change coma and put the leadership role of America back in the hands of an adult.

Defense of the Nation is one of the enumerated powers given to the Federal Government by the Constitution. It seems our current administration as well as most members of Congress have forsaken that sacred duty. It is refreshing to see that Gov. Romney has not. I do hope that I will have the honor of voting for Gov. Romney in 2012 as the Republican candidate for President.

I am disappointed in Obama and his leadership. I was expecting something better. However, I thought that maybe the people he picked for his Cabinet would have had more sense. They don't. He doesn't, members of Congress are doing exactly as they please. I thougt maybe they would all come to the American Public's table and stop doing their agenda? Hasn't happened. Our National Security has no Leadership. Napa(what ever her name is) is only interested in allowing Millions of Illegals amnesty. No background checks, nothing--she just wants to be in the know. She has no opinion worth having. Why don't we just open the Boarders and forget it. I am sick of the whole bunch.

Our president, who never heard a shot fired in anger, is looking for a "Peace Dividend". What peace? Do you think, with his leaning towards placating the Muslim world he really understands that we are in the most dangerous war ever. Idoubt it. I fear for our country. The military is stretched to near a breaking point. If anything, they should be increased. Maybe he can take a few dollars from the trillions he's giving the mismanaged banks and auto manufacturers. His return will be a great deal higher.

Romney bothers me because he is a moderate. We need a true Conservative to sit in the White House, but even the most conservative person is ineffective without his party's majority in Congress. The problem now is too many are afraid of offending someone. Plus Obama is too busy apologizing abroad and stealing our freedoms to defend them. Since when is it offensive to defend the very freedoms we enjoy? As we are currently witnessing, if WE don't defend them, someone who perceives himself to be more powerful than he actually is (Obama) will come in and take them! He has already begun!

I am a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer and Viet Nam veteran with 36 years service. Now I feel like all those years were wasted, as I watch our country being destroyed from the inside by the President and his low life followers on the hill. They have taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and they have violated that oath. The only word that can truly describes them is "traitor". Our only hope is to dump all incumbents from both parties and start from scratch with term limits.

It seems that each waking day brings forth another act of TREASON from this socialist administration. Either it's the spewing of garbage from the fool Pelosi, the rediculous ramblings of Reid, or the outright socialism of Obama. I honestly believe this gaggle of useful idiots would rather see this once great country go down in flames rather than change their agenda. There is a given however - if these fools continue to overreach (and I'm sure they will) they will ultimately foment the Second American Revolution. It probably won't happen in my lifetime (and for that I'm truly sorry) but it will happen and will hopefully put an end to liberal socialism in this country once and for all. I never thought I'd see a communist in the White House but then I never thought I'd see so many totally clueless voters...

In these times we cannot let our guard down militarily. Most tyrants and bullies will only respect strength. The proffered hand of peace is taken as weakness. At the same time, we must regulate the military to keep costs and graft down. Eisenhower warned about keeping controll of the military-industrial complex. There must be balance in everything but the citizen MUST be in control. We should not try to establish democracy everywhere. Each nation must develop a citizendery moral and informed enough to want it and now we seem to be unique in this role.

Mr. Romney has a loyal following here in Mi., and we must build on this. But It isn't any good to wait for a conservative leader. We have to do it ourselves. I am constantly contacting our 2 Democrat Senators and House of Reps. plus many from other states on current issues. I seldom get responses but I will keep e-mailing and calling. It is better than not doing anything. It is only 17 months to the mid-term elections. That is our only hope of saving our country. "Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda" is not an option.

In my opinion, Mitt Romney would have been a great president. I would have dropped a vote for him without blinking an eye. As it was, my left hand had to force my right hand to pull the lever for McCain. Unfortuately, "we the people" can't sit back and wait to rally around one man. Nor can we wait on the 2010 or 2012 elections for our collective voice to be heard at the polls. After witnessing the damage the left has done to our once great nation in less than 6-months, I'm not convinced our nation can withstand another 18-months of the same. A combination of power hungry, power starved Democrats and consending Republicans is going to be the ruin of our defense. Rolling over to the "MAJORITY" Dems by the Republicans is not the answer to our delema. We need Statesmen who are dedicated to our country's principles, interested in representing their constituents, and not trying to line their pockets at the taxpayers expense is what this country needs always. If we had health care the calibre of our congressional reps we would have no problems with health care. Defense is a matter of securing our borders & nothing is more unsecure than our southern border. Since it is still a border in name only, it seems obvious we need more defense spending to secure this border with Mexico and stop draining the American economy with freebies to non-citizens & nothing for hard working American citizens. Citizens that have paid into the government only to be denied/ignored by our government.

i have often wondered in the past six months, of where are the american people. this goes beyond what ever political party you are, or who you voted for. our freedoms are slowly being dwindled to government control, and the safety of the united states is not what it was. everyday little by little, we are becoming a socialist government, and no one seems to care. there is no outrage, no complaint, and congress goes about the business of the people, as if nothing is wrong. are the american people asleep, or is it they do not care? is anyone out there....hello.....

The Democrat leaders are wrecking the nation along with some weak spined Republicans. National defense will become a turkey on Thanksgiving for Obama and his knife wielding congressional buddies. In essence they will make the monies available for more bailouts. On a slightly different note, can anyone imagine the outrage that General Patton would have if we could have him on active duty while this teleprompter-dependent excuse for a president does his best to destroy the national defense?

True words about Henry Jackson, but Romney is no Jackson. Yes, Romney's words are very true. But Romney is a politician who wants very badly to become President. He will say and do whatever he thinks the conservatives want in order to attain that goal. Is Obama a scary situation? Absolutely! But Romney is not the man to replace him. If the GOP can't find a real Republican to run against Obama in 2012, it'll be just like Dole running against Clinton and we'll have Obama for another four years. By the end of that term there won't be much left of our Country and we'll probably be fighting one another.

This should be no surprise, with all the progressives in Congress. We have failed to educate our people over the past 50 years except in the colleges of liberal thinking. No wonder we have a group of leaders that believe our constitution is a living document that changes according to the values that those in power espouse. Much like our Supreme Court that changes based on the politics of the individual judges seated at the time. We could be at the beginning of the end if drastic measures our not taken. These people are taking all power out of the hands of"we the people" and I believe they are purposefully destroying our sovereinty.

Don't let American and European soldiers to have died in vain for the freedoms we have today. Even freedoms of those who want to see our soldiers in harm's way, and that's another issue. This administration has done so many stupidly wrong-headed things that we can no longer pretend that it's the ineptness of the leadership. At some point it has to be recognized that this is not fumbling around, this is a deliberate attempt to undermine the security and very survival of this nation. Every major decision or effort, be it the Economy, National Defense, Homeland Security, or Diplomacy, is dramatically to the wrong direction. If the intention is to fatally weaken this Nation, this President and his lackey Congress is succeeding. 2010 will decide our survivability. Recent liberal Presidents, and the Democratic Party, have downplayed the defense of the United States, through the resudtion of the military capacity, and the approach that the United States is guilty of abusing the rest of the world that we consistently have to rearm under a new Administration. With weaponry expanding world wide the opportunity to correct the deficiencies put in place will not be able to be overcome and that will end the ability of this nation to defend freedom in the world and protect our own interests.

It appears that the Clintons and President Obama are on the same page when it comes to diminishing the military defense department of personnel and defense weapons at a time when the nukes are aimed at the U.S. and Israel and no articulate or flowery words are going to change the minds of those who are on a path to get to heaven by wiping both off the face of the map if they get the opportunity while America is being left defenseless. Now, that's a crime against America and Americans! What good is cleaning up the air if the the air no longer exists in either country?

I can't believe how fool hardy our current so-called leaders are about our National Security. It is unbelievable that there are not enough True Americans to put a stop to the socialist direction that our Country is hurdling toward. Where is the backbone of our elected officials. Are they so afraid of B.O. We are still the best country on Earth to live. Why do we need to apologize to anyone for keeping freedom alive for over 200 years. The only way our enemies are going to "like" us is when they have conquered us and ceased our way of life. Our freedom to make our own choices is swiftly being taken from our hands. Our gov. has never been able to run any sort of interprise that operates in the black. I hope we can come together in time to stop the rape of our great country!

My God, If you miss one hour of Fox News or Talk radio, at breathtaking speed, our freedoms (and hard earned tax dollars) are being flushed down the toilet by this radical agenda beast of an administration. I AM OUTRAGED by the complacency of the American people who are not in-step with what is going down in our White House. By design, Obama is executing exactly what he planned. It's a crying shame that all the heads-in-the-sand will wake up to a Bankrupt America very soon, without ever realizing that they did not exercise their God given right and privilege to participate, and give voice, to their Constitutional right as a free Americans. Our Freedom... Going, going, GONE. Wake Up, American citizens- Kathy

I'm just an ignorant, old, farm raised country boy, so don't read my comment if you don't love GOD and AMERICA. I am watching Matt Laher [lair] interview Sara Palin as I write this comment. Shame on him, David Letterman and all the liberal media that seem determined to turn America into a 3rd world country. If the general population of this great nation does not wake up, we won't even be a world power in a few short years. Evil despises good--and believe you me--Evil never sleeps! The powers that be think the general public is a flock of sheep to be used as they wish. Apostasy is the greatest downfall in America today. We have let the greedy power mongers turn this Nation away from the principles our forefathers founded it on. Unless we humble ourselves before GOD as they did, the AMERICA we know will cease to exist.

IN MY OPINION Mr Obama is a muslim born in Kenya because it is reported that he spent $900,000.00 attorney fees to keep his vault certified birth certificate buried. His college records are blocked from public scrutiny, etc, etc. He lies and changes his mind daily it seems. THE republican party needs to dump all compromising RINO's, ie: McCain, Powell etc. Polititians who work with thdemocrat communists are compromisors and must be thrown out of the republican party. My father is from the "Greatest Generation" and retired from the military and I spent 22 years in the military myself. My father and I have pledged to support and defend the Constitution and this country to the extent of sacrificing our lives. Leadership is about what is good for this country, not what will get a political party elected and keep it in power. The Constitution should be the core value for all parties intent on governing this great country and instead the Constitution is rationalized away as a doctrine put together by a bunch of mean spirited white religious guys too long ago in our nation history that the Constitution is no longer applicable in these times. As long as the current leadership continues to wear thier rose colored glasses and believe that other countries will bow to the golden voice America' security will be in question.

Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson was right regarding this country's national security. We need a strong military, and the proper equipment they need, to protect this country. Our military policy should not be governed by what other countries, and the UN, think and used to protect the sovereignty of this country. The leaders of this country need to support AND FOLLOW the constitution and stop trying to change a document that is the envy of many freedom loving people of the world. "Scoop" was a common man, who knew how to talk to other common men and women, had a great deal of common sense, and knew what this country. needed. Where are our "Scoop" Jackson's now?

Get some lawyers together that have a pair and first get the necessary documents together to then march on the Capital and have them removed. Immediately go into a VERY special elective mode and get the proper person into that office to REPRESENT us as the citizens of this Nation. Everyone now has ideas of who should have been elected into that office in the first place. No that doesn't mean there is ONE certain person EVERYONE is thinking of... but we do this the old fashioned way... the AMERICAN way and vote someone into office who will be responsible. Someone who has the fortitude to run this country in the proper manner according to our founding beliefs and our CONSTITUTION. Don't just sit by and wait for someone to pull our collective fat out of the fire. Get the ball rolling and get "Just minded lawyers" going on this now to legally throw these traitors out of office!

We need a campaign to ask our political leaders who truly believe in a strong national defense, to muster up the courage to vigorously demand that we not waver or shirk our responsibility to protect this country. If there are too few politicians willing to live up to their oath, than we need some new politicians. Many of our political leaders are too concerned about offending our rivals. Our real enemies look at our apologetic approach as a major sign of weakness. During the Iranian hostage situation, the enemy was quite aware of Carter's weakness and unwillingness to deal with the situation firmly -- therefore the Iranians decided to keep the merchandise (the hostages) of you will -- when it became apparent that Ronald Reagan was to be the next president -- the Iranians did not feel it was in their best interest to keep the merchandise any longer. As the saying goes -- you avoid war by preparing for war!

There seem to be NO democrats in Congress who are motivated by their oath to defend the Constitution and our Nation. Only political expediency is in evidence. And, sadly, the elected Republicans seem, in the main, to have lost their backbones. More specific public exposure needs to be directed at those elected reps. who vote to weaken our security. Case in point: Public connection in juxtaposition to the opinions of Gens. Patreus, etc. in regard to voting against suppression of the detainee photos. Specific naming of those paying off political debts at the expense of our military's safety should be swift and broad.

The scariest thing here is that we don't have our priorities right. Obama wants change only for the sake of change, and all for the worst. We're headed down the socialism/fascism path in less that 5 months of his presidency. This can't be what the majority wanted can it? This is the master plan of the progressive movement that started in the early 1900's, and only a handful of reporters are even taking note of it. What's happened to investigative reporting, telling the truth about what we're seeing, and letting the people decide so that we can make a change during the next several election periods. It's time we all stood up and take notice on what is going on, and what's going to happen to the USA in the next few short months/years.

For the history of the US, we have always been a people of diversity and have welcomed those who wanted a better life. Things are different now. Americans can no longer afford to let our jobs and resources out. We need to start taking care of our own first, then the rest of the world. This includes defense of OUR Country. Maybe it is time for "We the People" to take "Our Country" back; defend our hard-earned freedoms, stand tall again and be proud. It's bad enough that our faith and way of life is frowned upon by other Nations... if we keep going like this, we will be the laughing stock of the world.

George Washington said "To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace." Cutting back our military preparedness not only violates this tried and proven principle, thereby putting our county at great risk, but it also violates President Obama's economic objective of creating well paying jobs. It's time that we recognize and alert the masses that an insidious revolution is under way, and that we, as a nation, regardless of political affiliation, need to take a stand for our freedom and liberty.

The recent news that defense officials are considering paring back on our missile defense system is most alarming. We have the edge in technology at this time and can shoot out of the air any missile aimed at the U.S., but the crazies in North Korea or Iran will undoubtedly try sometime in the not too distant future. We MUST continue to upgrade our defense systems to protect our people and our country from attack. Washington is losing its mind over health care and bailing out failing businesses. The cost of providing protection for our land, our children and their children is little in comparison.

Without a doubt, there are far too many enamored with their own agendas and too concerned about serving special interests. Appeasement is not the answer. Diplomacy is a part of the answer. We must "walk softly and carry a big stick." There are those who would gladly "pat us on the back with one hand and pick out pockets with the other." The fact that Pres. Obama apologized for our arrogance clearly demonstrates he has no clue about foreign policy and the part our defenses have played in the history of this country. To be a peace maker is one thing. To leave us as a second rate...or worse national defense contender is not acceptable. He has an over inflated opinion of his gift of oratory.

In this current day, I am almost ashamed to be an American. Our leaders do not seem to defend and protect the constitution nor do the majority seem to sincerely protect those who put their lives on the line for our freedom. I think we have evolved from the greatest, bravest nation in the world into the weakest, wimpiest, nothing country only because politicians care more about votes than they do the country and the public cares more for their handouts and special interests than they do the country. Too many people beg for handouts, and too many politicians comply in order to get their votes. Between those two groups, they have sold America down the river. They depend on each other and they outnumber the rest of us. That's what I think. I also think that it will be a miracle if we ever see another election .... rationale will be, why waste the money when we know the outcome in advance?

I disagree with Mr.carafano-don't soft peddle the words "..may not disarm"and "may not dissuade".The words are "will not". Sadly,in Wash.St. we have weak willed and naive politicos incapable of taking any strong positions other than on deficit spending and feel good projects.

I agreee with you all the way. Really I think Obama is narcisustic. I think he is sick in the head. He is doing everything possible to ruin this country and if someone, especailly congress doesn't stop him we are in big trouble and with Nancy Pelosi in charge we don't have much hope of anything better. I wish there were more Newt Ginriches out there in the republican party to speak out. I hope he runs for the next election. I know peple wanted change but I think most have had their belly full already and I expect his backers are going to fall away from soon this is our only hope. He can ruin this country in four years. He will never be elected again I am sure.

Your comment above about (This will not be displayed or shared. Privacy Policy) it’s great for some people. I for one really want to be heard. I've written to the White House and call Obama a liar. I would say it to his face. I'm a Vietnam area vet. I’m totally disabled, retired from federal civil service. I know what goes on in the government. Just like John Kerry and Jane Fonda (with exception that now, these type control the government) just like the fore mentioned people they are all traitors. Except now they are controlling the country. If we don’t pay our way the way they want us to, we will end up in jail. Facist!!!!!

There is no doubt that President Reagans policies to strengthen the U.S. Military and remain a strong nation in the face of a cold war and other threats was a clear deterrant. We should be as fortunate to have one or more strong leaders today who would promote that strength.....where are they????

Something I believe, conservatives today are missing is that the culture in America has turned into a "self-centered, 'me first'" culture. It's been building for years and now Americans have in Washington, what they wished for. The '60's Generation' of rebellion and gimme, gimme...is in control and patriotism and doing what is right in the sight of God...is out the window. It is not just that Obama is in office, but the Congress and the Senate are filled with 'pie in the sky' liberals who really believe what they hope to happen, is reality and our enemies will just respect that and leave us alone. God have mercy on us all.

He is undermining our Constitution and making it worthless. I remember the words of Nikita Kruschev after the Blockade of Cuba "We do not have to have a war with the United States, we will defete them from within" This was after Kennedy said the other side "Just Blinked". Well, Obama is Blinking every time he opens his mouth. Where is the United States Supreme Court? And why cant Impeachment Proceedings be brought against OBAMA, PELOSI and REED. Daniel MC, You are right, but its going to take a lot more than you and me, remember Joe the Plumber ?Just one man and its old hat now everyones forgotten him. But he did make people listen for awhile. One man to the White House or to Congress, hell man youd be arrested just for telling someone who you wanted to see. A 100,000,000 man march would make someone take notice. But thats probably Impossible, not enough people would want to be BOTHERED, or take off jobs they wont have very long anyway, or pay for thier own gas to get there. We can always find excuses not to do, but can we find good reason to do?

The proper role of government is to provide for national defense and the police and courts. I applaud Mitts stand on national defense if it isn't just the words of another professional liar and thief. Mitt Romneys neo-conservative baggage is a little too much for me and not likely to garner much support from the core conservative base. In fact the Republican party has lost what little spine it had and looks like Democrats lite most of the time. In our political system the vast majority of Democrats are simple traitors, the vast majority of Republicans are cowards, but they are all thieves and liars, once again we will have a choice between bad and worse. Who among Republicans is a man? Where is the conservative leadership? Who Is John Galt?

Anyone with a smattering of history under their belts know that when mighty civilizations put their defense behind pleasure or other things, they are readying themselves for a fall! It is there for anyone who cares to look up for themselves these facts. Rome is probably the best example. When they felt that no one would dare attack the mighty Roman Empire and then spent all their time at the coliseum pitting man against man or man against beast, their addiction to pleasure was their downfall. They became weak and defenseless because keeping a strong defense was the last thing on their sick minds. And so goes the others as well into the pages of the history books. As well as the United States if she allows her defenses to become undermined by those who feel "defense" spending is unnecessary! History does, indeed, repeat itself and is doing so at this very minute! We CAN reverse the damage NOW, but if we wait, it may not be able to be stopped, let alone reversed.

They that are on their guard, and appear ready to receive their adversaries, are in much less danger of being attacked than the supine, secure and negligent." Peter King had it right when he said that NYC is the most vulnerable city in the US and they sneak in this terrorist. Now this administration wants to miranderize our terrorist enemies on the frontline. This is insane. The reason not to kill our enemy is to get vital information and now we have to give them the same rights that we would give a petty thief in the USA.Mindblowing to me and to the rest of the sane people in the USA.Now our this administration. Frankly, being as astute as Scoop Jackson would be a blessing because the man knew well where American should be and that, obviously, included missile defense. Americans voted for "Change" and they are reaping the rewards for what may be the most devastating election in our history. The second most devastating being the Democratic House and Senate election of 2006. Never fear, Obama will razzle-dazzle all our potential enemies with his rhetoric and more empty promises. It was predictable, despite our commitments, despite the facts of international situations and hostilities, that the Democrats would cut defense spending. In fact, it's amazing that Obama didn't come through on his campaign promise for pulling out of Iraq. Clearly, however, there will be no negotiations, no speeches, no posturing or apologizing that will change the terrorist point of view on the United States. Defense cuts are therefore risky. For Bob and Dorothy, I too have some pretty good feelings about Romney. If he has interests for 2012, however, he needs to be more active and vocal...as we see Newt Gingrich doing. I believe it's time for our government officials to set back and quit spending. They have been spending so fast I don't believe they realize what its doing to this fine country. Most American people don't approve of all this spending. Pulling money from our defense to spend in nonimportant projects. Seems as though they want to bankrupt this country. What would it take to put a term limit on these so called elected officials as it seems they are forgetting who put them in these positions. Maybe there needs to be another party started by people who know what the Constitutions and Bill of Rights stands FOR! I think we have already had all the CHANGE that we can handle! Daniel MC, I'm hoping that as many people post at the end of these articles are also writing and calling their representatives at least weekly to express our views and concerns. I write to politicians at least 3 times a week on a myriad of issues that concern us CLEAR and REALISTIC thinkers and I hope many of you do also. A good place to start is Congress.org as well as other sites but I have found this one quiet effective. I also have phone numbers of my representatives in case a subject warrents a call. I have also written to the President and Nancy Pelosi (a handwritten letter) and sent it via USPS, because a Heartfelt personal message is the strongest transmission.

So please don't take a snotty attitude towards me calling me unrealistic, and unclear. If you were to read all the postings... I have posted several times and laid out a proposal on this page and I do not do so lightly. Only one person responded back, all other's simply wrote more complaining. It doesn't seem as though anyone wants or has the fortitude to do anything but complain.

Daniel Mc, I believe your heart is in the right place, but litigation is not the road to Nobama land. The reason he was elected is because ignorant people (not stupid, just ignorant) bought his pack of "change" lies. Supporting organizations like the American Conservative Union and the Heritage foundation help educate people--including our Congress men and women--to recognize better alternatives. Letters to the editor also help, as do letters to Congress help. It was an uproar from the public that defeated nationalized healthcare when Clinton was in office, and it was the same citizens who kept amnesty for illegal aliens from going into effect under Bush. Litigation is a pipe dream and wasted effort.

Obama is a "One World" socialist who believes that HIS personal charisma will be all we need to keep us safe. Why, after all, would any nation wish harm to a country with such a nice guy running things. This is beyond naive to the point of being dangerous. The fact that more Americans don't recognize the danger can be attributed to the schools and the media who perpetuate the myth of a socialist utopia where all is sweetness and light. The "Fourth Estate" in this country has become "Fifth Columnists."

AND, the points made in the Presidential campaign by Ron Paul, re: American imperial over-reach, were EXACTLY right.

Deeply concerned and troubled after a phone call I made shortly after 9/11 to what was called Homeland Security. When reached a real person I was seriously disappointed in the non-chalant vague and non-caring response to my reports. His attitude seemed almost slurring as he said there was really no reason to get involved much, it was just not even a real department with designated duties. Just a bunch of old boys getting shuffled around to new assignments of no real circumstance. Don't know if anyone else got this kind of response from someone who was allegedly assigned to look out for our security and concerns, but I was greatly annoyed at the misconception and deception that we truly had a security minded department who would/could help us in dangerous times. This lackadaisical attitude was so laid back, bet he fell over backward onto the floor. I want to be able to trust my country is in the capable hands of caring patriots, not bumfuzzled nincompoops!

What is happening to our great nation? How did everything go topsey/turvey? I cannot shake the cloud of gloom that follows me. I do not like listening to the news, or reading anything about our country. The only reason I do is so that I don't become apathetic to what is happening around me. How do bills get passed in Congress without being read? How do companies get bail outs and hand outs and yet the American workers are losing jobs? And now they want to cut the defense budget? Are they serious? North Korea and Iran are going to end up kicking our butts and we are going to be helpless to do anything. Perhaps Obama will invite them by for a tea party or a few social drinks and together they will solve this problem. Yeah right!

When every action by our elected officials (both parties) is first and foremost motivated by political and personal gain; the American people are in big trouble. They all took an oath to defend this country from enemies both outside and within; but we probably have more danger with the senseless policies of the current administration since the disastrous Jimmy Carter administration.

I sailed the seas of the world for 25 years, and specialized in all things electronic. If we do not keep moving ahead of our potential enemies, our way of life is in jeopardy. We must constantly invest in our defense. The world has never been a more dangerous place.

This article is dead on! Defense of our nation must be priority #1.If we don't have our freedom we have nothing.

Please keep our defense system, national and international strong by supplying the needed funding. The best offense is a strong defense.

Speaking of Defense neglect from our congress, all should put "One Second After" by William Fortchen on their essential reading list this summer. Forward by Newt Gingrich. One second after finishing this book, we all should be contacting our Senators and Representatives about what slackards they really are regarding EMP attack prepardness and protection. They would apparently rather find ways to Tax citizens to protect against global warming than a real and imminent threat.

We need Mitt Romney as a candidate for 2012. His excellent experience is far beyond a community organizer and a next to nothing record in two years in the Senate. I wonder if our President is gaining positively from the sad experience he's having now?

The Federal Government's first, and originally only job is to maintain the Military and PROTECT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. It is the responsibility of the Government to see that our military is protected and that they get what they need for our protection. WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT THAT THEY WOULD ATTEMPT TO DENY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THAT PROTECTION. THEY HAVE DONE THIS BY NOT PROTECTING OUR BORDERS, DENYING THE MILITARY WHAT THEY NEED, AND ESPECIALLY BY DENYING US THE MISSLE DEFENSE SYSTEM. WITH NORTH KOREA ACTUALLY TESTING NUCLEAR WAR, AND IRAN SOON TO BE IN THE POSITION TO THREATEN THE U.S. IT IS MANDATORY THAT WE HAVE THIS VITAL PROTECTION.

We need to protect America. Our president does not condem Iran because we should not intervene in another democracy, but we tell Honduras that we will cut the $200M aid if they do not place back the dictator. So if the previous president violates the constitution, the supreme court, the senate by having a constitution referendem so he can be elected a third term. Who is Obama supporting? The dictator or a democracy trying not be overturn by Chavez pupits. Come and vote in 2010. Romney 2012.

I'm 73, and although I was quite young, I still remember the fervor and pride of the public to do something to help defend their country. My father was too old to go to war, but he worked as a welder for Douglas Aircraft to help build up the depleted military aircraft. I say that should NEVER happen again, because the next we may be fighting on US soil!

Looks like this has caused a substantial reaction from American Citizen's no matter the party voted for. In general Americans are waking up and are fed up already with what is transpiring on the Hill. Can you imagine 4 years of this stuff? If Republicans nor Democrats have a spine to stand up to this administration for fear of being fired or stripped of their title (like the Inspector Generals)then it become incumbent upon the AMERICAN PEOPLE "We the People" to take our country back. Who will lead the charge!!! Don't count on any Rep or Dem to do it for us, this is something we have to do for ourselves and do it NOW. If we don't then we will suffer the consequences of inaction!!!

Along with all the spending the Obamanation group are trying their very best to disarm the public in this country any way they can. This is so we the people have no means to resist what comes along; U.N. take over, mass illegal immigration, terrorist attacks, etc. The Japanese during WWII decided not to envade America following Pearl Harbor because of the number of guns in the public's hands. Everyone of the important appointees in the Obamanation is an anti-gun proponent. Think about it: do you think the police can protect you. lots of luck! Teddy Poosevelt said it very well "Walk softly, but carry a BIG stick" We are now down to almost a small twig.
