Two dead and officer shot at Mississippi Walmart

Two people were killed, and an officer was shot at a Walmart in Mississippi early Tuesday morning.

The shooting occurred at a Walmart, both of the dead were employees of the store, according to ABC affiliate Local 24.

DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco, said that the officer who was shot was hit in his bulletproof vest and is not wounded.

The gunman was shot by a Southaven police officer and taken to the hospital, although the individual’s condition is not yet known. The shooter has not been identified.

An employee of the Walmart told local media that the shooter is a former employee who had worked at the store for 25 years and was recently fired.

A customer who was walking out of the store at the time of the shooting told CNN that he heard the gunfire.

“I heard a bunch of gunshots. Pop pop pop pop — more than a dozen shots,” Odom said. “I just thought ‘Run!’ and ran to my car. This is crazy. The world is crazy nowadays.”

Located in the northern area of the state, Southaven is the third largest city in Mississippi and a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.

The shooting comes just days after the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, where a 19-year-old gunman began firing indiscriminately into the crowd, killing three and injuring 12 more.
