Obama calls for 'new Declaration of Independence'

By: Michael Neibauer
January 17, 2009

BALTIMORE --  President-elect Barack Obama capped the first day of his inaugural celebration here before a crowd of about 40,000 people by calling for a “new Declaration of Independence” and a return to the idealism of 1776.

At the climactic stop of his 137-mile train trip that began in Philadelphia, passed through Wilmington, Del. and was to end at Washington’s Union Station, Obama spoke of the need to recapture the spirit of the American revolution. “What is required is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation, but in our own lives - from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry...” he said

He added, “Only a handful of times in our history has a generation been confronted with challenges so vast,” citing tough economic times and two wars. Americans today must call upon “the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed,” to deal with those challenges, he said.

In an 11-minute speech, Obama touched on some of the themes he is expected to expand upon during his inaugural address Tuesday. He warned that there would be “false starts and setbacks,” and admitted “I will make some mistakes” on the way to achieving goals of reviving the economy and dealing with conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama, the first African American elected president, made what appeared to be a reference to slavery, calling the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence “documents that were imperfect but had within them, like our nation itself, the capacity to be made more perfect.”

During stops along the journey that mimicked Abraham Lincoln’s pre-inaugural train trip, Obama made a fleeting reference to the 16th president, calling upon Americans to reach out to their “better angels” in coming together to solve problems, a phrase lifted from Lincoln’s first inaugural address.

Earlier Saturday, about 250 people heard a similar Obama speech inside  Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. Several hundred more were inside the station, but blocked off from the speech by blue curtains and police barricades.

"It's like they just bypassed Philly," said Joyce Cunningham of West Philadelphia, an Obama volunteer but not one of the lucky 250.  "We played a major role. You tell him Joyce said we're not happy."

Others were content just to be part of the scene. "Here we are," said Stephanie Williams of Salt Lake City, who flew in a day early for a family event. "We just had to take a shot." It was heartwarming, Williams said, "for lifelong Democrats like ourselves to have so many people [in Utah] vote for Obama."

This is all very grandiose. I, for one, would appreciate him leaving the Constitution alone. Particularly the part that requires the president be a natural-born citizen. As in, one whose parents were both U.S. citizens at the time of his birth. I suspect he dislikes that part, considering his father never was a citizen, nor was he at birth. Apparently no one cares and we are tossing the Constitution to the curb.

This is a joke, right? Have people lost their minds? The Declaration of Independence launched a rebellion against taxation and a government run amok. What is Obama bringing us? More taxation, and government juggernaut that may never be stoppable. I hope you people who voted for Obama are prepared to suffer dearly for your choice.

The 'new declaration of independence' statement is just campaign rhetoric. The one we have is just fine, thank you. Also, there are two ways to end a war: winning or surrendering.

Writers of the Constitution understood the problem of democracy & tried to institute preventions: Electoral college & natural birth requirement. The Left has systematically dismantled the restraints and our country now faces the same de-generation into dictatorship, palace coups, internal revolt, and massive poverty. The future holds for us a ruling elite and peasants. All sold to the citizens as "social justice." Please read Hayek Vol.2 of Law Legislation and Liberty: The Mirage of Social Justice. Also Bruno Leoni Freedom and the Law who posits that the flaw in our Republic is the power of Congress to make laws.

Michelle, Zero had better leave the Constitution alone. The alternative is to have a revolution on his "anointed" hands. He is/has been/will be a puppet. A phony, empty suit. The 0 symbol is a zero. Liberty, Hayek and Von Mises have been ignored in favor of Keynes.

This country was founded on individual freedoms and fighting high taxes. Socialism is the exact opposite of what this country was founded on and stood for. Its ridiculous that people are so gullible as to just listen and believe this man when he talks. Instead they should focus on his past voting record(when he chose to vote which wasnt often) and the COMMUNIST ideas he promotes in his books.

You are witnessing the making of the first dictator of the US. H. J. Res. 5 will allow Obama to stay in office indefinately. Just like Chaves in Venesualia, the country has slipped into socialism. You have seen the last US President and have voted in the first US Dictator. Hope you are happy now.

Unfortunately we as Americans need to be prepared for the new socialistic government that is now coming. This process I believe began years ago and is now ready to be implemented......A sad day in American history that it has come to this.....

The next step (assuming court challenges fail) to end this Coup d'état is for each state legislature to mandate that anyone placing their name on any presidential ballot be certified with indisputable proof that the candidate is a "Natural Born Citizen" of the USA and should give the opposing party the right to require State Department travel records and other government records to support a claim of Natural Born Citizen. The proposed law should also require certificaton that the candidate completely fulfilled timely registration with the Selective Service. Failure to satisfy these requirement should void any write in votes as well, and should not allow votes cast for a non-certified candidate in an Electoral College vote. Violations to the law should be anautomatic 5 year jail sentence. If at least 5 key states enact this legislation this presidente will not seek a second term.

What we need is proof this man is a "Natural Born Citizen" of the United States and constitutionally eligible to be our president. Until that happens he can wish all he wants!

Let's get the facts straight, Obama is not an African-American. His mother was white, and his father was a black Arab from Kenya. He has no heritage of African-Americans and he has no lineage to any slaves...in fact his Arab ancestors bought and sold slaves and were slave owners.

Not only is O not actually African American, if he was he wouldn't be first. Five other past presidents had more African American blood then he does. As soon as he is sworn in he will have destroyed the Constitution he swearing to defend. Don't think he doesn't already know that. May God Help Us All

I still think that this is just a bad dream and I will wake up. Once 'zero' starts dismantling our Constitution, changing our flag, the President's seal, remove God from our currency and building and Declaration of Independence, just maybe the American people will wake up and revolt..

This is the beginning of the American nightmare, not the American dream. Obama's carefully crafted speech reveals the man's communistic and socialistic ideology, even while he tells us that we must abandon our ideologies. Incredible! And this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. The Democrats have set forth a bill before Congress to amend the Constitution, ending term limits for the office of president. And our nation is just dumb enough these days to allow such treason.

We do not need a new Declaration of Independence or Constitution. Our founding fathers wrote a timeless document whose concepts are valid for all times. It was to maintain freedom. To change any of these freedom concepts that are now being proposed is to take away freedom. We are living in sad times.

So where does it end? We have an African-American President scolding us for our bigotry. He might actually wonder how such a bigotted land ever elected him to it's highest office. Just how long can the left milk that dead cow?

Jan 19, 2009

And hateful. And prejudice. And biggoted. We will be fine with Barok Obama as our president. We do not have a free market economy. It has been a public/privat partnership since the country started paying taxes. and that's not a bad thing. We have roads that are lit. We have an electric grid and all sorts of other stuff that business would not have installed but business benefitted. As we "hold the line" on taxes, our infrastructure is crumbling, ie bridges falling into rivers. Wake up and accept the fact we have a public/private enterprize called the U.S. BTW, Obama is a citizen. You people who think he isn't are just bitter that he won and with attitudes/prejudices like the ones you have, that's when I have to think "God help us"

This country was founded and built on those TWO documents and they were ment to lead this country forever, not changed at the whim of a government. Yes, we've had some "additions" but it shall never be allowed to be changed. Who is Obama to say that they were or are imperfect and now have the capacity to be made perfect. This country has lasted for over 200 years, and is the finest type of government in the world thanks to these two documents.

Note to Morons on this Thread

Jan 20, 2009

"New" Declaration of Independence is a rhetorical device. I can only assume you're either fifth graders or you're just morons. Do you have to be spoon-fed the news? Have you never heard a speech before? After 8 years of digging this country into the deepest hole it's ever been in, we need a new direction. Typical Examiner reader is someone who believes Bush did a heck of a swell job.

michelle m (from 1/17/2009): Get your facts straight. It's YOU changing the constitution. If you are born in this country, you are a citizen! If you are born in a different country and EITHER parent is an American citizen, so are you! Best to be quiet when you are ignorant of the facts. Do you think this was just an oversight? Do you really believe he just slipped in without being a citizen? Wake Up! Don't you wish you could hide your stupidity?

Jan 20, 2009

In response to “Note to Morons on this Thread” you need to dig a little bit deeper. In the first place this depression started a lot further back than just 8 years ago. During the past 8 years we have been fighting a conflict that we did not start. I can’t say that Bush was right in all the choices that he made but he did try to stop the problems of our financial situation. It was the Democrats that shot it down several times in Congress. Yet they continue to point the finger at Bush. OB worked for ACORN and forced a lot of banks and financial institutes into giving loans they were not sure of because of credit. He didn’t mind throwing down the racist card then; he won’t have a problem throwing it down again.

Wow

I guess the small minds make it impossible for most of you to think
