Candidate Obama vs. President Obama

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

(AP)

In September 2008, during the first debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, McCain said his Democratic opponent had “the most liberal voting record in the United States Senate — it’s hard to reach across the aisle from that far to the left.”

Barack Obama, losing his magic?
The “most liberal” critique was a staple of Republican talking points. And it had some basis in fact: A survey by the nonpartisan National Journal found Obama’s record in 2007, the year he began running for president, “the most liberal in the Senate.”

Obama rejected the charge.  “This is all old politics,” he said in February 2008. “Those old categories don’t work, and they’re preventing us from solving the problems that the American people want us to solve.”

From that, the image of Obama as a centrist, pragmatic problem-solver was born. It was an image that would last through the campaign, and through the election, and all the way until Inauguration Day.

But now, after nearly two months of the Obama administration, more and more voters are wondering: Is the Barack Obama they voted for the same Barack Obama who now occupies the Oval Office?

Early signs — Obama’s support of the $787 billion stimulus bill, his $3.6 trillion budget proposal, his tax proposals, his health care proposals, his environmental proposals, his flexibility on earmarks — suggest that Obama does, in fact, fit into those “old categories” he once rejected.

Obama is pursuing a traditional liberal agenda. If he continues to walk that path, the question will become why anyone ever believed he would do otherwise.

Well, for one, he was a great candidate, and McCain was not. Beyond that, though, Obama was what political strategists call an “aspirational candidate.” He represented something that voters aspired to be: Part of an America that was good enough, and far enough removed from its racial past, to elect a strong candidate who was also an African-American.

The feeling touched liberals and conservatives alike. On the right, conservatives who opposed Obama still expressed happiness that he was a serious contender.  A few went beyond that, giving rise to the much-discussed “Obamacon” phenomenon.

“Having a first-class temperament and a first-class intellect, President Obama will surely understand that traditional-left politics aren’t going to get us out of this pit we’ve dug for ourselves,” wrote Christopher Buckley, son of conservative icon William F. Buckley, when he endorsed Obama in October.

Just a few weeks of the Obama administration caused Buckley to wonder if he had judged Obama correctly. Another admirer, the New York Times columnist David Brooks, wrote this month of having been forced “to confront the reality that Barack Obama is not who we thought he was.”

They’re not alone. Right now, Americans who feel a creeping sense of buyer’s remorse about Obama are still in the minority; his job approval rating is still high, and his personal approval rating is higher.

But Obama knows what might come. Back in early 2008, when he found himself in trouble over his 20-year relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama said plaintively, “I may not know him as well as I thought.” Now, Obama’s fear is that voters might be thinking the same thing.

The jury's still out on whether or not Obama is the engine of this move left or if he's just unwilling to go against his core supporters on the left side of the Democratic Party. He's still got three years to do what Bill Clinton did after the 1994 midterms, change course and move to the center to recapture the swing voters, but those up for re-election in 2010 don't have the same luxury.

And don't forget that Obama has loaded his administration with left wing amnesty advocates for illegal immigrants. He also talked about pushing "comprehensive immigration reform" a/k/a mass amnesty today in California -- the same type of amnesty plan that Americans overwhemingly rejected in 2007. Now with the economy much worse and unemployment at a 26-year high, Americans will be even more unreceptive to "comprehensive reform" amnesty than they were two years ago. There will be a huge uproar and Americans will fight amnesty VERY hard. It's frankly immoral to push amnesty plan during this era of mass unemployment!

Except, of course, that much of his "strength" as a candidate lay with the media's refusal to apply to him the standards required of his predecessors, let alone an Republican contender

Of course he can move to the center later - he has leveraged his "The Sky is Falling" predictions of financial catastrophe into the largest under-the-radar socialist coup in history with his trillions of dollars spent on left/liberal pet projects in the first two months of his administration. The hard part is over, now all he has left to do now is tighten up our new wage-slave shackles and spend the next 3 years running another "I didn't do it" campaign of lies and obfuscation.

I always tell my children that you can write whatever you want on your shirt. It is your actions that will tell others who you are and what you stand for. Electing a man who has little experience was a mistake - no matter how well he reads a teleprompter. I think that Candidate Obama is fabulous; President Obama less so.

Obama was the least scrutinized candidate ever. The media gave their guy a pass. He could only be aspirational because the media refused to expose the things that would have given voters a clear picture of his background, beliefs and goals.

Obama the candidate should've stayed Obama the candidate. Were it not for the race fetishists, he would've done so. Thanks to them, he's been able to rise above his level of competence.

There was the Obama of the primary and the Obama of the general. It turns out the Obama of the primary is the real Obama and the Obama of the general was a front. The front got elected. I am also quite tired of Obama claiming he "inherited" this financial mess. He did not. He volunteered. Rick

The main stream media was totally in the tank for this guy. We witnessed the death of journalism. We are paying for it now. Gee and I thought it would feel good to be able to hold my head high and proclaim "I didn't vote for him". The pain comes from knowing that so many fellow citizens drank the kool-aid. Now we have a huge problem. We need to throw all of the bumbs out of congress. Every idiot that went along with this BS (bid stimulus) must go. Show them the door America! This is our country. We decide!

Here's why we're so deep in the soup now: 52% of us voted for a man based on the color of his skin rather than the content of his character. Had Candidate Obama been white, there's NO WAY he would have gotten the free pass he received from the media. And so we end up with Presideent Obama, who turned out just exactly the way he promised, despite the high hopes of Buckley, Brooks, and their ilk. My mamma always said, "If it walks like a liberal, quacks like a liberal, votes like a liberal, spends like a liberal--IT'S A LIBERAL, YOU MORON!!!"

People! People! You shouldn't be surfing the internet. Get to work so you can pay my mortgage. Then get a second job so you can pay my student loans. Then sell your blood, sperm or eggs so you can pay off my credit cards. Finally, raid your kids piggy banks and start collecting aluminum cans so you can pay for my vacation. With all this financial stress, I need a vacation. Remember, socialism doesn't work until we're all miserable. Now get busy!

For those who had ears to hear, the question was how long it would take for either the center or the left to find out whom Obama was lying to. He was a leftist to get nominated, and a centrist to get elected. It was in full display, but no one in the media wanted to call him on it.

President Obama is clearly following a "Progressive" agenda. That is America speak for Socialist trending toward Fascist. This indeed is no joke or trifle, but a stark reality that was EASILY foretold during the campaign. Our only hope is that Obama`s actions as president begin to cause even his most ardent supporters to wake up to the threat to Classical Liberalism Obama represents. That is, despite one`s political affiliation, US citizens better get ready for more attacks on personal Liberty to come. And come they will. Let us hope that our Republic/Federal system and the good sense of the bulk of the US citizenry can plain shut Obama down. Hope and Change, you say? I HOPE Obama is CHANGES in four years or (better yet)less . . . .

Without Talk Radio and Fox news, and we will soon be without Talk radio. We will for all practical purposes have State run Media. Obama is the biggest fraud in my lifetime to be in charge of this country. He is a liar and continues to spin his lies to try to cover his true agenda. He is out to make the United States a nation oppressed by the government. The hypocrites in Congress are right there with him.

Daniel in Brookline

Mar 19, 2009

Nick Beef said: 'We are witnessing the reign of the WORST President in our history.' I disagree. He may well turn out to be that; certainly what we've seen since Jan. 20th is not encouraging. It's also possible that the man will get over himself a little, learn what it means to be a leader, and grow in office, as many of his predecessors have done. -- Mind you, I didn't vote for the man, and I approve of very little that he's done. But I don't think it's right to render History's Verdict on him when he hasn't even been President for two months. (If, on the other hand, you say "so far he's as bad, or worse, than we thought he'd be", I'd endorse that wholeheartedly.) -- respectfully, Daniel in Brookline

Tom: "Greg, if you dont' like what you read don't read it. I'm sure the lib's never targeted Bush according to you eh." ****************** Thanks Tom. Such wisdom from you should be noted. Its so fair and balanced. To the right.

Obama has hidden in plain sight. He is a master of sophistry and must marvel every day at how easy it is. Way early on I used these rules for candidate Obama: 1. Voting record, voting record, voting record. 2. Personal history. 3. Never listen to his speeches: read the transcript CAREFULLY. 4. Compare speeches to earlier speeches, to past record and to actions. Clear as daylight. Not many surprises, except how audacious his actual audacity is.

Larry Miller

Mar 19, 2009

The total disconnect between candidate Obama's rhetoric and President Obama's actions are ultimately what's going to erode and destroy his standing with the American people. I wonder if the so-called MSM will then be taking so many polls to base their 'reporting' on once that happens? Or do they have so much invested in his success they dare not utter anything negative?

Greg. You must realize one thing about this newspaper. The Republican Party is in the toilet right now. You must realize, when your party is crushed in this election by President Obama and your party is no longer in power and you have no ideals and are losing the youth vote, and the minority vote, and a bleak future, you have nothing left but to whine and to trash the sitting President. Don't take these folks seriously. Greg, I learned to read these comments and take it like a grain of salt. Yes, this newspaper is totally bias, so what? This is the first time I have ever commented on this site. They are sore losers and a minority. Please realize, most folks are still cheering for this President.. I do suggest you stop reading this newspaper because it appears to disturb you. Remember, this is one point of view and this is their outlet.

I laugh at Buckley and Brooks for questioning themselves and their judgement on Obama. These guys try to portray themselves as above the fray and more reasonable then other Republicans. Buckley and Brooks have proven themselves to be dupes, naive and perhaps STUPID. Values do not change. Buckley and Brooks have proven they personally are for sale, as they lecture the rest of us. for "popularity"

The Examiner is such a righ-wing hack rag. Just look at their weekly, front-page profiles. Amazingly they're all about neocons who led America into an unecessary war and crashed the economy. Times change and thus he must also, everything isn't as black and white as it was a few months ago, if anything things have gotten better though. This is why Presidents must walk and chew gum at the same time, they cant pick and choose what they want to take on. I wonder what would Mr. The fudamentals of the economy are strong would be doing now, Ill tell you we picked the right man for the job. What president fulfilled all of his campaign promises? The fools who voted for Obama have not wreaked their punishment on the entire nation. Obama's plan is to implement as many crazy socialist ideas as quickly as he can in case he ends up losing control of Congress in 2010. However, given the idiocy of the typical voter in this country, and given the billions of dollars for ACORN, I have a bad feeling that Obama will come out of 2010 in great shape which means we are really in trouble.

@John, I disagree. I don't think the jury's still out on the "move" left. He's always been leftist, as the article states regarding his voting record. He projected centrism when that was certainly not what he practiced. As long as democrats control Congress, he'll stay hard left. Everyone he surrounds himself with is the same way so I doubt there will ever be a move to the center. And @D...I've never run for President so anyone hardly cares if I break promises. My promises don't jeopardize the health of the country. Everything he says has an expiration date.

"He represented something that voters aspired to be: Part of an America that was good enough, and far enough removed from its racial past, to elect a strong candidate who was also an African-American." From discussions with people during the campaign and many threads on the internet, I think you've got that last part reversed. From what I could tell, Obama was elected because he was an African-American who was [perceived to be] a strong candidate. Obama was celebrated because he would be "the first black President", whereas McCain was "another old white guy". Criticisms and questions about him were often rebutted with charges of racism from his supporters. Obama was judged not by the content of his character, but by the color of his skin... and in my opinion it is almost as bad to vote FOR someone because of race as AGAINST.

Why didn't people employ critical thought concerning Barry? Reverend Wright, Pfleger, Rezko, Ayers, Farrakhan -- because of his associations with these people I didn't vote for him. I didn't trust his judgment. I really have to ask if common sense is relevant in the 21st Century.

I do think it is a little early to write the story of his administration in what is done in less than 100 days. But what is coming late is, he has not hired his team. There is a lot of Republican appointees still around, still gumming up the works. Those top OFA faces who worked the campaigns and help advanced his agenda is still unemployed or waiting to join the administration. He needs to get his team behind him. And if he wants employment to spark start hiring. You are the government.

I think Pres. Obama is turning out to be scarier than Candidate Obama and what anyone thought during the campaign with respect to a few conservatives. I do not approve of really anything he has done so far. Starting with GITMO and the spendulous bill to nominating someone like Kathleen Sebelius as HHS Secy. He has proven himself to be as far to the left as McCain stated in that comment. His administration is a joke. He can't find anyone to nominate who has actually paid their taxes and Geithner is unbelievable. This is the guy who was going to solve all our problems? Robert Gibbs can't answer a single question asked by a reporter and he is supposed to speak for the White House?

Why on earth they ignored his heinous past experiences, his pre-occupation with race, his lack of any accomplishments, his announcing thousands of times that we need "trickle-up" economics, his bragging in his book DFMF that he hung around "Marxist profs" at Oxy, and attended socialist conferences in NYC while going to Columbia.....etc, etc.....is simply astounding.

Obama is a puppet president for something underneath that is far more dangerous and sinister. If he had been all white, he would never have been elected. His black half was his ticket in. He is not our first black president. He is our first mulatto or mixed race president.(His white mother and grandparents have been reduced to a footnote along w/ his poverty stricken relatives in Africa) Which reminds me, why don't we ever hear about his side of the family? As far as I am concerned, he is the first really dangerous president.
