Democrat trap: Pelosi's wrath or voter backlash

The House is in the final rush toward passage of a national health care bill, and there's one thing Speaker Nancy Pelosi absolutely, positively does not want her Democratic lawmakers to do: Go home.

"You meet constituents and get an earful from them -- that's the last thing she wants," says a key House Republican aide. "If you were a Democrat, and you went home last weekend and were asked about the health care bill, you could say, 'I'm still looking at it.' Well, now you've had it for a week, the vote is any day now. What are you going to say?" Better just to stay in Washington and avoid potentially uncomfortable scenes.

The problem is, those constituents, perhaps 10,000 of them, came to Capitol Hill Thursday to raise the issue in person. They came to the "House Call" rally organized by Republican leaders, but they desperately wanted to get a message to the 52 moderate Blue Dog Democrats who hold the fate of PelosiCare in their hands.

HEY BLUE DOGS! said one hand-lettered sign. WHO WANTS TO BE TOAST?

"What can the Republicans do at this point?" asks Clare Roberts of Chambersburg, Pa., the woman holding the sign. "They don't have the votes. It's up to the Blue Dogs to stand against this right now."

One Democrat who may be having visions of toast these days is Virginia Rep. Tom Perriello, who last year defeated a Republican incumbent by less than one-fifth of one percentage point. In Tuesday's gubernatorial election, the GOP came roaring back in Perriello's district, with Republican Bob McDonnell smashing Democrat Creigh Deeds by a 61 to 39 percent margin. The newly energized GOP will definitely be gunning for Perriello next year.

You'd think that fact -- along with the drubbing Perriello took at some town halls last August -- might be a message to the lawmaker, who has never committed one way or the other on PelosiCare. But by Thursday, Perriello appeared ready to stick with his speaker, even if it kills him. "I've moved a lot closer to yes," he told MSNBC. "I really think that's the key. Being the party of no, whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, just saying 'no' is not enough. The question is, are you putting solutions on the table?"

Perriello is not alone. There are dozens of Democrats representing districts where a majority of voters have serious misgivings about national health care. And yet many will end up voting for their party's bill. Why?

"The thing that Pelosi has going for her right now is that a lot of her members are more afraid of her than they are of their constituents," says the GOP insider. He notes that Pelosi has plenty of weapons to make life miserable for members who cross her -- "any benefits the member can have for the remainder of this Congress, the kind of support they'll have going into next year's election, and if they lose, what kind of post-Congress opportunities they will have." All could be endangered by a vote against the health care bill.

Meanwhile, as the Blue Dogs sweated, the protesters rallied outside their offices. Among them was Susie Kimsey, from Phoenix, who is concerned about the expansion of government and decided a couple of days ago that she just had to fly to Washington for the rally. (Her husband spent all afternoon on the Internet looking for an affordable plane fare.) "I hope Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic leadership come out and look at this crowd and see these people," Kimsey said. "I'm a homemaker. I raised my kids. I was a baseball mom. I went to dance recitals. I'm not one who would pull up signs and stomp and yell. But I have to do this for my grandkids."

No doubt a number of Democrats looked outside and saw the crowd. But they're in a tough place: fearful of their constituents' anger, on one side, and of their speaker's anger on the other.

It's a bad choice. But in the end, Pelosi can't fire them. The voters can. "As the old saying goes, cross thin ice at your own peril," said 77-year-old Herbert Rosser, who came to the rally from Raleigh, N.C. "The American people are going to make them pay a price for it."

It is unfathomable to me that there is even a question in the Blue Dogs' minds about why they should vote no. The U.S. is a Republic; the people elect Representatives to do just that.....represent them. When it is suggested that the Blue Dogs are more afraid of Pelosi than their constituents, they have made Pelosi their goddess. She is not their boss. She has no power over their paychecks. If the Blue Dogs vote for her health bill, they are being insubordinate to those they represent. There is no decision to make......if their constituents say no, then they vote no. The devil with their election money, their future jobs, etc. This is not just a spending bill.....this is a complete takeover of each citizen's actual life. No one will ever forget a yes vote for Pelosi. That's for sure.

Well Pelosi said she was willing to lose some seats in 2010 in the House to pass Obamacare. It appears that Rep. Perriello wants to lead the "toast parade"?

When they describe the crowds at these events why do they always assume that they are all conservatives? There are Dems and independents that do not want a complete overhaul of their healthcare as well. I know, because I am one.

I have a recurring nightmare and dream that often wakes me in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.
On my really bad nights, I see Obama, Reid and Pelosi flanked by vultures at the signing of the 'Healthcare" bill.
On other, and better restful nights I see a slow motion movie of the Speaker and the majority leader being dragged down the steps of the capital by a crowd of smiling Jefferson's. The multitude of Jefferson's begin to chant "Yes we Can" as the two politicians are strung from a lamp post and left to twist and turn in the breeze reminiscent of Benito Mussolini. Those are the nights that give me comfort!

So, instead of standing up for YOUR own principles and that of your VOTING BLOC, you know, the people who allow you to work only 3 days, 4 days a week if it's 'busy' - these Blue Dogs and the like are towing the party line? Due to Streeeetch Pelosi's visceral..?

Pelosi, Reid, and Obama hold the keys to post-congress employment for any Dems that lose in 2010. With 65 new Federal Judgeships being created, all the loyal Dems that lose in 2010 will have guaranteed jobs, and the confirmations will take place during the lame duck 2010 session, while the Dems still have 60 in the Senate. Disloyal Dems will still lose in 2010, and with today's increasing unemployment levels, they will be left holding a tin cup on street corners to get enough money to eat.

Vote on Saturday, won't post the bill for people to see, closed door sessions, behind the scenes deals--this is wrong, just flat out wrong.

Worse yet, would anybody--even Democrats--let people like Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid any where near a personal decision affecting their own household? Are these the kind of people you look to for leadership? Frankly, I do not want any of these people anywhere near a decision that will affect my own or family's lives.

What a bunch of wimps! Dems are going to vote for this bill because they're afraid of Pelosi? The future of this country may be damaged for decades because of one person? You might as well call her a dictator. Well, at least most of you will be gone by 2013.

Nov 6, 2009

This is Princess Pelosi's last swan song. She is done - finished - out of touch - out of options. Anyone who votes for this legislation is going to incur the wrath of very angry voters. Even those who think they support health care reform will be disappointed and angry.

If they were really thinking, the on the fence dems would realize they have disproportionate influence over the divisive and ineffective Pelosi. Help smite her bloated bill and send a clear signal about her inability to lead the house and they could precipitate her ouster as leader - and save everybody the horror of her leadership moving forward.

Why aren't we encouraging these BlueDogs to jump parties? They get Pelosi off their back and perhaps have a chance to keep their seats. I will welcome the Blue Dogs with open arms (they can always be primaried) if it means keeping HC from passing--since it will be virtually impossible to rollback. I read a comment on another blog that said under Clinton, 1000 D's switched to R's from the local level all the way to the Senate.

Nov 6, 2009

O.k., so the bill costs ~ $1.2 trillion. The Government insurance bill will extend to ~12% of those who don't have health insurance (84% of the county possesses insurance and this will allow, collectively, 96% of the country insurance).

$1.2 trillion divided by ~36,000,000 people = ~3.3 million dollars PER PERSON..!

Medicare Advantage will be kaput, rationing health services for all, raising private insurance rates, removing funds for future health research, taxes HAVE to be increased to curb skyrocketing inflation, et al.,

This is the very same reason our forefathers left Aristocratic England..

"I will welcome the Blue Dogs with open arms (they can always be primaried) if it means keeping HC from passing-"

rfive:
so you admit you will lie to blue-dogs, enticing them to switch parties and then voting against them in a primary....it sure is fun to watch republicans eat their own like in the recent NY congressional race, but none of the blue dogs are stupid enough to fall for that one. Blue dogs know the tea baggers will vote against them no matter what, so tea baggers shouldn't expect to have any influence at all.

Nov 6, 2009

Has it ever occured to any of you fiery angry people that blue dogs don't care about you because you are going to vote against them no matter what? Tom Perriello has done a lot to make this bill better. He is not afraid of Nancy Pelosi (has voted against her plenty of times) and is definitly not afraid of a small percentage of his constituency that are angry bullies. He is working to do the right thing. The house health care bill is now endorsed by the AMA, AARP, and the American cancer society. I'm sure you tea baggers think these are all evil organizations....but normal people don't!

rfive

Nov 6, 2009

"so you admit you will lie to blue-dogs, enticing them to switch parties and then voting against them in a primary...."

betty:
Remember, the Blue Dogs that Rahm recruited oftentimes ran as more conservative candidates than the R's they were challenging. So, if they are going to vote with conservative principles in mind, then I don't think there would be any reason to primary them; however, if they continue to vote for liberal legislation, then yes, I think they would be primaried. But, those are probably not the people who would switch parties.

Betty, the KosKids and MoveOn are already raising money hand over fist to fund primary challengers against these Blue Dogs anyway. The left hates the Blue Dogs . . .

"The house health care bill is now endorsed by the AMA, AARP, and the American cancer society. "

George:
I have read that the AMA commences a national meeting tomorrow. The local chapters have told the national organization that they have enough votes to force them to rescind their endorsement of the House HC Reform bill and plan to do so tomorrow if they don't rescind today.

They are making a waiting list, to reduce benefits!

turn to page 26 to find the provision for waiting lists. There, listed in Title I "Immediate Reforms," Sec. 101 "National High Risk Pool Program," paragraph (3)(g) "Covered Benefits Cost Sharing Premiums and Consumer Protection" is paragraph (7) (h)(2) with the heading "Insufficient Funds."

This states, “If the Secretary estimates for any fiscal year that the aggregate amounts available for payment of expenses of the high-risk pool will be less than the amount of the expenses, the Secretary shall make such adjustments as are necessary to eliminate such deficit, including reducing benefits, increasing premiums, or establishing waiting lists."

Your not voting just for a 'health bill' but a complete Socialist/Marxist takeover and database. Forget medical care, there won't be any like todays, there will be lines and more lines but what will really be dangerous to your health is the data base with all your vital information on it. The complete takeover of the United States by Marxist's is the push, we already have Czars ready to use the information that will be given to them by Obama and his thugs. Remember, Communists have murdered over 200 million of their own citizens and it was the data bases that put them in their graves.

The consnesus on this thread seems to be that if Democrats are more afraid of losing next year than they are of Pelosi, they will oppose socialized medicine.

But will voters actually show up to register their disapproval? They did in New Jersey and Virginia, but failed to do so in NY-23).

I think that Democrats will look at how Hoffman was defeated (he was portrayed by Democrats and the state-run media as the second coming of Timothy McVeigh). They may conclude that it is better to vote for the bill (you know that running other peoples' lives is what they want most in the world) and use the state-run media to dehumanize the opposition.

Hey - it worked in NY23!

It's delightfully predictable that you've provided no numbers whatsoever to support your claim. The American people, poll after poll, have announced that they want healthcare reform. @mwalimu_d@yahoo.com

Your understanding of what happened in NY23 is woefully incomplete. Hoffman didn't even live in the district, and had no knowlede of local issues. He lost a local election. It's not particularly confusing - the hard liners drummed out a moderate and lost an election in a district that hasn't gone D in 100 years.

Patriot Mom: The 2010 election cycle starts NOW. Call your senators and representative and make it clear to them that their job is in jeopardy. The best line in the article above is "Pelosi can't fire them." But we can, and you need to make that clear.

Also, if you think your representatives don't represent you, now is the time to get involved at the district level to get new representation. Remember, Congressman have to get re-elected every two years. Now is the time to find someone to replace yours if they're not doing their job. PotVsKtl.....you are the typical liberal. You never debate issues, you just critize others that refuse to blindly follow the socialist agenda. I'm convinced that liberals use this technique because they rarely know anything about the issues. I'm against all of your social programs including medicare and social security. For example, if the AVERAGE American were allowed to put the same amount in an IRA as we pay into social security, we would be millionaires at age 65 in lieu of receiving 1K/mo.....cat food money. All social programs reward the irresponsible while penalizing the responsible. You liberals go from your mother's teat to suckling the government....it must be awful to be so dependent. I feel that I can take better care of myself than the government can. Why don't you grow up and take some personal responsibility for your welfare?

Your job members of Congress is to convince the Citizens of this country of ours that their health coverage will be just as good as the coverage you (the members of Congress we elected to "serve us") have. When you do this, then you will have done your job.

If you can't buy a $15,000 plan than you will go to jail. I can not afford her $15000 a year plan and I DON'T WANT OTHERS TO PAY FOR ME!!!
I guess I will be going to jail!
Pelosi is (explicit) insane!!! Does she really think the American people will tolerate this? NO!!!

“AJsDaddie - Actually, conservatives do complain and have been complaining about all entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security and even the public school system. They all lose money and do inefficiently what could be better done privately and at the very least should be left to the states. Medicare is bankrupt and you want to expand it? Great idea!”
==========================
So ajsdaddie,
Let me get this straight. Medicare is broke and now you think big government can run our whole Health Care system????

PotVsKtl @LBK
The government is already involved in our helthcare. You do realize that, right? I don't see millions of people on the streets wailing about the evils of Medicare.
==========================
Medicare is decent because it is not 2000 pages of tax schemes put upon Americans by corrupt government. Medicare was designed by those who had America’s best interest in mind and did not have ulterior motives. Medicare was not designed by lobbyists, special interest groups and endorsed by Pelosi.

“”The thing that Pelosi has going for her right now is that a lot of her members are more afraid of her than they are of their constituents," says the GOP insider. He notes that Pelosi has plenty of weapons to make life miserable for members who cross her -- "any benefits the member can have for the remainder of this Congress, the kind of support they'll have going into next year's election, and if they lose, what kind of post-Congress opportunities they will have." All could be endangered by a vote against the health care bill.””

How in the world did Pelosi ever get voted in as Speaker of the House?…Man, if I were Obama, I would be watching my back with this ambitious lunatic Pelosi prowling around.

I will not forive the media for not alerting the public about how destructive those Communist Dogs Pelosi-Obama-Reid are to our country. I have eliminated all news sources except Fox from my cable's Favorite Channels list.

You know, I do not think Obama or Pelosi care about the public's reaction to what they sare doing. It seems that there's a "pre-printed" AGENDA to do list , written well before the election that Obama must do to keep his job with who ever he works for. No matter what the press says about his background; Obama comes off as sa cheap shark with good speaking skills and a pechant to be vicious when crossed. I'm sorry, but this is the way I see it. Pelosihas tried and declined to do this severl times, but her pay or do time regulation reveals her for what sje is. Cabn you say TOTALITERIAN MARXIST. Well, I knew you could, but this acting "lovey Lady Dog" is an embarrassment to California and the Nation too.

None of the legislators are really going to have to carry a tin cup if they get voted out , they continue to receive their salary and very good benefits for the rest of their lives. I certainly don't want any of the "REFORMS" in the House or Senate at this time. I would like to see Tort reform and open Competion , like the Republicans are trying to push. Then work on ways to help those who don't have insurance , such as JOBS , by cutting taxes and massive restrictions on companies that make it so hard for them to do business in this country. Cap & Trade will be the Death of Manufacturing jobs in this country , most have already gone now. Remember , the largest polluters , China & India are not going to do anything to reduce their pollution. Besides , CO2 is not the problem , it is good for plant growth and what do plants make , OXYGEN and FOOD.

No wonder your party is so inept, out of touch with reality..

StargazerinSavannah. That is a dream I could also enjoy in slumber. We put the reps in power, we can take them out. Although, they don't seem to care that they are committing career suicide, as long as they get the govt controls in while they can, it makes then next chance to have a socialist dictator that much easier. We are fighting for the Constitution and the spirit of this country right now. I have lost count of how many times I have contacted my senator, Senator Cornyn (R - Texas) and my rep., Rep. Ralph Hall (R - 4th District, Texas) and even Gov. Rick Perry, as regards Texas' actions within the USA, about these matters. We must absolutely make ourselves heard, now. And we must vote in 2010 and in 2012, while we are still "allowed" to vote. I'm not calling Obama Hitler but Hitler was popularly elected from the National Socialist Party (NAZI) and then decided that elections were no longer necessary, as he thought he knew what was best for Germany.

Everything democrats want to do involves redistribution of wealth. In lieu of dragging it out, bill by bill, I think they should introduce legislation requiring that each person's paycheck be forwarded to a big government basket in DC. After the government takes their share, the remainder should be divided by the current population over 18 years of age and evenly distributed. I truly think liberals would feel that this would be the fairest, most equitable method to reach that utopian society they seek so ardently. However, they will soon learn that no one will want to become a doctor, engineer, or even a steeple painter. In a blink of an eye, America will become a third world country. America is the greatest country on earth because anyone can be anything they want to be if they are willing to work for it. Democrats are going to destroy this country if they continue redistributing wealth via social programs. Enough is enough!!!

“Democrat trap: Pelosi's wrath or voter backlash”

What an irony that the Democrats on Capitol Hill should be the first to experience the wonderful CHANGE that Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have wrought for our formerly free nation. They have a very short time to wake up and stop this now.

Unbelievable how far this country has slid -- we are now having to FIGHT to prevent our tax dollars to go for funding for abortions. Even ten years ago, this would have been unthinkable. What is abortion now? A right of passage for welfare dependents?? These people must be so freaking stupid as to allow themselves to be subjugated and led by these Democrats. What can you do to fight such abject stupidity??

It's time to start finding our 2010 candidates to replace all of these Dems. If they are afraid of Pelosi, then they do not deserve to represent the citizens who voted them in.
