Democrats play word games on immigration

By: Byron York

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. (AP File Photo)

On June 24, Sen. Charles Schumer gave a remarkable speech on immigration.  Preparing the way for the Obama administration's expected push for comprehensive reform, Schumer seemed to adopt a newer, tougher-sounding tone as he promised that a bill would be passed during "this Congress."

"People who enter the United States without our permission are illegal aliens, and illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who entered the United States legally," Schumer said.

"Illegal immigration is wrong -- plain and simple," he continued. "When we use phrases like 'undocumented workers,' we convey a message to the American people that their government is not serious about combating illegal immigration, which the American people overwhelmingly oppose."

Schumer can read the polls as well as anybody. He knows he can't spout a bunch of pro-amnesty euphemisms and satisfy the voters' desire for strict controls on illegal immigration. That means he has to at least adopt the language of toughness. So out goes that word cherished among many Democrats: "undocumented." Schumer can read the polls as well as anybody. He knows he can't spout a bunch of pro-amnesty euphemisms and satisfy the voters' desire for strict controls on illegal immigration. That means he has to at least adopt the language of toughness. So out goes that word cherished among many Democrats: "undocumented."

Except not everyone got the message. The very next day, Schumer and other lawmakers met with President Barack Obama to discuss immigration. And guess what the president said? Not once, not twice, but three times:

» "We need a effective way to recognize and legalize the status of undocumented workers who are here."

»  "[The American people are] concerned that any immigration reform simply will be a short-term legalization of undocumented workers with no long-term solution."

»  "The 12 million or so undocumented workers are here [are a] group that we have to deal with in a practical, common-sense way."

And not only that, just a few days earlier, at a prayer breakfast with a Hispanic group, Obama said we cannot "tolerate employers who exploit undocumented workers in order to drive down wages."

That's a lot of "undocumented." Which suggests a question for Schumer. Do the president's words convey a message to the American people that their government is not serious about combating illegal immigration?

It turns out even Schumer himself hasn't always taken his own advice. A couple of months ago, during a Capitol Hill hearing, he referred to "undocumented workers" while posing a question to former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan. He also used the phrase in his 2008 book, Positively American.

But now he's trying to massage the message. "Schumer's basically doing what McCain tried in the election," says Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. "[That is] to agree that 'enforcement first' is the right approach, but to argue that the enforcement has already happened and now it's time to proceed to amnesty." Schumer's proposal is filled with features that sound tough but likely won't be at all tough in practice. Krikorian warns that Schumer's promise to employ high-tech enforcement techniques in the future might come at the cost of amnesty today. After the amnesty is in place, the enforcement measures might never get done.

And it's not just that. Is this time of great economic distress really the right time to argue for greater immigration? "You want to bring more people in?" asks one incredulous GOP aide on Capitol Hill. "That was a hard case to make when unemployment was four percent, much less when it's almost ten percent."

And then there's time. Even if Democrats make room in the Senate schedule to address immigration — a big question, given the fights over cap-and-trade, health care, Sonia Sotomayor and other issues — there's real doubt about whether another big bill can be done amid the rush. That's why Schumer gave himself a little wiggle room by saying the bill would be passed "this Congress," meaning anytime between now and the end of next year. Finally, there's the opposition. A few years ago, Senate Republicans were evenly divided on the Kennedy-McCain immigration measure, a bill that had the strong support of a Republican president. Now, it's likely the opposition will be more unified.

"Republicans won't be as divided this time," the GOP aide says. "Then, you had a Republican president offering what some people said was a reasonable plan, and Republicans split right down the middle. Now, you're going to have a Democratic president with a Democratic Congress offering a left-leaning plan with unemployment in double digits. I don't think that's a recipe for success."

That means trouble for immigration reform -- no matter what words Schumer uses to describe it.

Round 'em up, and boot 'em out. That's the immigration reform America wants. Shame on past administrations for letting them in, letting them stay, and letting employers exploit them. They've totally undermined the economy, driven down wages, cost taxpayers billions, brought drugs and kidnapping and drunk driving with them. Go home now!

Referring to illegal aliens as "immigrants" is an insult and slap in the face to every legal immigrant. You drag us down to their level.

How about a President with a spine, and tell foreign leaders to reform their own countries to help their own people?

It is NOT our responsibility to fund the whole world's people!

OUR government is supposed to work for CITIZENS, and far too many citizens are out of work!

Immigrants that actually value our way of life and rule of law, are the ones who come here legally and want to assimilate.

Any politician voting for amnesty will receive a pink slip!

In the fifties the US conducted a sweep and rounded up and deported hundreds of thousands of illegals. It IS doable. It IS legal. It IS moral. It is IMMORAL to allow millions of criminals to flaunt immigration laws with impunity. Obama will see his plummeting poll numbers go even lower if he goes forward with this. He'll get the Latino vote and lose millions of others in the process.

Double-digit unemployment and massive budget deficits at every level of government, yet Dems and some Republicans want to increase the flood of immigrant workers and social welfare cases. Unbelievable. The US is no longer a nation of immigrants, we're a nation for immigrants, where foreigners' interests come first.

NOW they throw us a little bone and admit that "undocumented" is insulting. Whoopee! They're willing to dump their Orwellian twisting of words in exchange for a massive amensty paid for by US taxpayers. Wow, what a fair trade-off, I'm so impressed, Chuckles. NOT!

They are NOT immigrants. They are foreign INVADERS that must be repelled. Anyone providing them shelter or employment should be jailed in accordance with existing laws. Eliminate the incentive and they will stop coming. That is the only sure way to stop them. By the way, WELCOME to new AMERICANS who immigrate legally!!

these idiots keep using the term 12 million undocumented immigrants. the true phrase is 30 million illegal aliens. this is all to get more votes. that 12 million figure is like five years old, they know if they give thirty million illegals citizenship thats a lot of votes. thats all this is. then add there family to the number and your talking about a hundred million mexicans living in america. it would change the country forever and theres no coming back from that. were screwed.

Make no mistake -- it's all about the amnesty. The amnesty is the only thing that matters to these people. The libs know that the amnesty will be immediate and irrevocable and the "enforcement" components will be promised and never delivered upon. Using history as a lesson they may cunningly decide that they can promise anything for that amnesty and that either activist judges, incompetent bureacrats, or government inertia will render the "enforcement" provisions meaningless.

That's how it worked in 1986 and with the dozen or so mini-amnesties since. Why would the next amnesty be any different?

Legal immigration is just as messed up as our Government's tolerance of the illegal variety. Why do we continue to legally permit around 1 million immigrants in this country per year? And now with 10% unemployment this policy makes even less sense? It's not only the sheer numbers but also the composition of these immigrants -- most are undereducated, low-skilled, and English challenged. That combination makes a great recipe for a future Democratic voter, but certainly doesn't benefit this country in any tangible way.

Wake up Republican party and stand for something!

Every illegal alien working in construction, manufacturing, service industries, etc. is using a fraudulent SSN and filed a fraudulent I-9, W-4, etc. In other words 8.5 million illegal aliens are committing ID fraud which is a felony.

They may be using your SSN or your child's SSN. So what harm does that do??? The IRS will come looking for you asking why you are filing two tax returns or they will want to know why you didn't report all the income you made. Don't forget that your income will now include the illegal aliens earnings, so you will be responsible for paying any taxes he owes. Many illegals file tax returns for the sole purpose of claiming Earned Income Credit (EIC), so you can expect the IRS to question that as well.

Those who come here illegally, steal our IDs and ignore our laws have already demonstrated they lack the honesty and decency to ever become American citizens.

Place a $ 200.00 bounty on each illegal that is turned into the imigration service. No questions asked.
You will have them turning themselves in for the money.
We do not need to round them all up, we can expell them one at a time just like the same way they came over.

Calling foreign invaders "undocumented" or "illegal immigrants" is to lie about their situation. Every one should be deported immediately, including any children they may have borne while in the United States. If they married a citizen while here, the spouse should have his or her passport application expedited, to speed up their reunion in the alien's country of origin.

Truth of the matter is that immigration will pass this congress because it's do or die for the Republican Party. Duh....why do you think they lost control of Congress and the White House. If the general public was so out of touch granting citizenship to the 12-30 million than wouldn't you think that the Rebublican party would at least control part of Congress? Not quite, they were so out of touch with no real solutions and ended up getting the boot from the White House and congress.

A Heritage Foundation Report estimated that if the terribly flawed 2007 mass amnesty bill had passed, it would have imposed a net burden of at least $2.6 TRILLION on taxpayers. Plus with over 14 million Americans out of work, Obama and Schumer have the nerve to try to shove amnesty for millions of illegal foreign workers down our throats?! Are they serious?? How can these elitists be so insensitive? When is common sense going to enter this debate! NO MORE AMNESTIES!!

Obama's immigration dog and pony show was the dem's throwing a bone to the ethnic race groups and the Chamber of Commerce.
They realize they don't have the votes for amnesty so they must appear to be doing something in order to placate the open border's crowd that helped elect Obama. He needs to keep them under the fold like the dems have done with blacks with unfulfilled empty promises. That play has worked for 40 years.
Meanwhile, the other hand no one is watching is poised to radically change the country while folks are distracted by phony immigration talk, phony "czars" and Michael Jackson.

Sad to see "Americans" do not know their own history.
EVERYBODY is an Immigrant!!(except for Native Americans).

Invaders?! If I recall it was our "Founding Fathers" who invaded this country, killing & relocating Native Americans!

Lesson from History: NAZI Germany also blamed Jews for the poor state of the economy!

Why not blame your CEO's, Wall Steet, or the companies shipping jobs overseas?!

Racism runs deep in America! Too bad for all of you 'folk' that Obama won!

The care that Robin exhibits for long time American taxpayers, and poor citizens is heartwarming. As for Real American, he's just the standard clown at the illegal immigration rallies flying the Mexican flag on top of the pole with the American flag below it and turned upside down. In the other hand he's got the gringos go back to Europe poster, etc.

P.S. Robin, at least Americans have compensated the American Indian with casino's, money, and land. What has the Mexican government ever done for the native Indians in Mexico?? NOTHING, SQUAT. (this applies to you, so called real American, not a North American Indian but no doubt a Mexican in disguise.) It's amazing how these same old excuse used to violate U.S. immigration law keep coming up.

The majority of Mexicans alive today are descended from the Spaniards, who were from Europe. So, if you want all
Europeans out of North America, most Mexicans would have to head back to Spain. By the way, when the Spaniards and the first white Europeans came to North America, there were no immigration laws in place. Since you can't violate a law that doesn't exist, these early European settlers weren't illegal aliens.

Any person born in the United States is an American citizen at birth. And since they were born here, they are NOT immigrants. Immigrants come here from other countries. By the way, The first Native Americans WERE immigrants as they came here from Asia.

"Invaders?! If I recall it was our "Founding Fathers" who invaded this country, killing & relocating Native Americans!"

Something that has happened hundreds of times around the world over the centuries. One good example is when the Spanish conquerors invaded this land
long before the first white Europeans came here. The Spaniards killed and displaced large numbers of Native Americans. Most Mexicans alive today are descended from these conquering and murdering Spaniards.

"Lesson from History: NAZI Germany also blamed Jews for the poor state of the economy!"

There are no lessons from the Nazis' treatment of the Jews that can be applied to the problem of illegal immigration today in United States. The Jews were not illegal aliens and they didn't enter other countries illegally and then demand special rights for themselves. There is NO correlation between the Jews of that era and the illegal aliens of our era, except in your delusional mind.

"Racism runs deep in America! Too bad for all of you 'folk' that Obama won!"

The reason that Obama won is because many of these 'folk' you refer to voted for him. But how could this happen since you claim that "Racism runs deep in America"?

"Racism runs deep in America! Too bad for all of you 'folk' that Obama won!"

After the last election, I have to agree that "Racism runs deep in America!" I was wrong to think that it had been largely overcome. It just changed neighborhood.

Martin Luther King would have wept over the last election. He longed for a country where people were judged based on their character and qualifications, rather than on the color of their skin. Voting for anyone because of the color of their skin is racist, regardless of whether they are black or white. Subtract out all the votes for Obama that were cast because he was black and he likely would not have won.

The media should be ashamed. If white people bragged that they voted for someone because they were white, they would have been rightfully condemned. Where was the media outrage over the shockingly huge number people proclaiming their racist votes for Obama because he was black? It is very very sad.

Illegal immigration IS a financial burden to all citizens! It is not a racist issue, we are fed up with our tax dollars spent in billions, each year, going to them!

It's a sovereignty issue, it's a safety issue, it has absolutely nothing to do with their race, it's about following the laws we already have and politicians have ignored far too long!

I'm still amazed that there is a foreign invasion force numbering in the multi-millions already within our borders and we have not authorized the National Guard to use all means necessary to route them out. This should include jailing anyone that "shelters or aids" the invaders (a treasonable offense).

Most all advances in science and mathmatics for the last 2 to 3 thousand years came from europeans and europeans americans. The industrial revolution started in the U.K and spread to other european countries and the U.S.
Most any invention from a bicycle to
a jet airliner, to most anything electrical or electronic, aspirin,
sewing machines. farm tractors, nuclear
reactors most anything you can think of was invented by a europeans or americans.
The europeans brought science and technology to the U.S. That is what
made it an advanced industrialized
country. Mexicans have few and mostly
insignificant invention and scientific
advances.
