Disillusioned liberals yearn for Hillary Clinton

(AP)

Where were you when you came to the panicky realization that Hillary Clinton was right?

For me, it was while driving to work one recent morning and talking with a colleague about the state of the health legislation. I was explaining how the Obama plan wasn’t really about universal coverage but rather cutting a deal with the insurance industry and then making it look good for liberals.

I paused, realizing that I had just repeated, almost verbatim, the lines that Clinton used to bludgeon  then-Sen. Barack Obama during the Democratic primaries.

As they debated in Cleveland — the nastiest of their one-on-one matchups after John Edwards dropped out to spend more time with his families — Clinton charged that Obama wouldn’t play tough enough and would get rolled by the insurance industry.

Her words came back to me: “Senator Obama’s plan does not cover everyone. It would leave, give or take, 15 million people out.”

I expected to look into the rearview mirror and see her sitting in the back seat cackling and wearing that suit that looked like it had been plucked from the wardrobe trailer of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

I shuddered as I did the math. The plan backed by the White House would cover about 94 percent of Americans, leaving about 15 million without coverage. And as an added injury, under the Obama plan, the uninsured will now be paying fines for the offense of not being able to afford what will be more expensive coverage.

Not that Clinton’s plan would have been an idyll of Austrian economics and American self-reliance.

The weight of her mandate would have crushed businesses and young workers with a vengeance, but it would have been real, honest socialism. And everyone would have been covered.

With the mumbling, accidental socialism of Obama, the insurance companies get richer and the middle class gets to pay more for less care. And what the working stiffs don’t pay, senior citizens will sacrifice in the form of Medicare cuts.

That’s why so many liberals are now remembering Clinton’s other line from the Ohio primary of March 2008: “Shame on you, Barack Obama.”

Most conservatives had their moment of regret for Clinton’s loss long ago when they realized that Obama was completely out his depth.

It started during the period of “The Office of the President-Elect” and continued as Google proved better at vetting members of the administration than the transition team.

For those on the Right chiefly concerned with foreign policy, the lament about Clinton’s miserable campaign continues to deepen. They believe that radical Islam and Vladimir Putin will prove to be tougher adversaries than the insurance industry and the senior senator from Maine. The defense-minded Right is still thinking about the 3 a.m. call, and not the one from the Nobel Committee.

But for most conservatives, Obama’s incompetence is his best attribute. While it’s true that the president may dither his way into more trouble in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he may prove no worse than Jimmy Carter when it comes to deliberately weakening America’s position in the world. As Ronald Reagan showed, America can be made strong again.

But conservatives know that they never would have had a chance with Clinton. Where Obama has overfilled his plate like a kid at Thanksgiving dinner and now stares at an unappetizing mountain of cold mashed potatoes, Clinton would have taken measured bites and finished the whole feast.

By the end of her second term (oh, yes), Clinton might have undone the Republican Party for good, turning it into a marginal force that could occasionally block the majority but never really rule.

Clinton spent a lifetime studying the levers of power and 16 years getting ready for the top job. In fact, she was so busy preparing to be president that she let Paul Begala and the other faded glories from her husband’s political shop handle the whole getting-elected part.

It was a truly terrible electoral effort only outstripped by the hapless, fractious campaign of her friend John McCain.

But had she won, there’s no doubt that she would have ground up the bones of her enemies and baked chocolate chip cookies with them. Obama, though, has proven to be the only person who could make the GOP look reasonable again after the misadventures of the Bush years.

Conservatives can console themselves with the thought of 2010 and beyond.

For liberals, though, the strange, sad longing for the woman they rejected has only just begun.

Interesting!
I'm a conservative, who hopes that the Republicans take back Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012, but I can agree with the author on the point of the article - Hillary Clinton would have been better than Barack Obama.

Poor HIllary is an enabler of rotten behavior - look at her inability to set limits with Bill. Not willing to draw a line in the sand, not willing to identify corruption and evil, she now equivocates on Iran and North Korea - "Don't make me ...uh...uh...do something bad." Not convincing.
Meanwhile, every despot in the world knows that Obama is a Beta male, easily rolled and manipulated and coerced. We are still living with the horrifying ascendency of JImmy's biggest foreign policy mistake: preferring the mullah's over the Shah. God help us all. We need to formally apologize to our children for allowing this ZERO to come to power.

If it had to be a democrat - for the good of the country I would say that Hillary should have been POTUS. But Nobama is the best thing that could ever happen to the Republican party. But on the other hand, I don't know why Obama's enemies are saying he is a failure. He is doing exactly what he & his party set out to do. Make our country weak and set one group against another, he wants to use the racist charge wherever - in their minds - it fits. The dems even used it against Rush Limbaugh for crying out loud. It will get worse before it gets better, mark my words. Once those ignorant, lazy liberals in Detroit realize that Obama's "stash" is running out (like the idiots said while standing in line for their handouts) they will riot. It will be like LA during the Rodney King affair. Remember that one? Well its history repeating itself.

Obama won the election because the media made him out to be a Messiah. He had little experience, no accomplishments, a shady past, and no agenda other than the audacity of hope. He is in over his head like a midget at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

But this is a learning experience for Americans. Let's hope the country survives him.

and to be clear, she would have at least been a little respectable as president where Obama isn't the least bit respectable. But against McCain...? HA
But the Republicans deserved it - not because they were too conservative, but because they crashed into the median in the middle of the road. Middle is only muddle. Had they - primarily congressional Rep stayed right (during the Bush years), they'd still have the house and we'd have Romney as president.

Dems ate their own during the primary in order to promote their "rock star". Kennedy backed Obama because he did not want the Clinton Legacy to overshadow the Kennedy one. Not to mention Kennedy thought he could pull Obama's strings and knew Hillary would not allow it. I think it is just possible that the Dems lost a good size of their party when they abused Hillary. I know I voted Republican for the first time in my life and might just continue to do so.

I agree with the comment "the Democratsate their own." In their koolaid induced fury to get No-Bama leected they spit on the SURE thing- Hillary. She didnt stand a chance when Dona Brazile, Caroline Kennedy, John Kerry, Bill Richardson, John Edwards etc all slobbered on and on about Obama - a man thta no one too kthe time to properly investigate. All the hoopla and now look at him... pathetic, in over his head, surrounded by Communistsand Socialists who hate America and want to change it. People woke up too late and now we are stuck with this Kenyan born loser. 2010 will be a wake up call. Democrats are reaping what they have sowed. They spit on the qualified candidate and elected the unknown foreign- born one. Obama is a joke..

While many of us still have Democratic principles we have abandoned the Democratic party after the radicals hijacked it last year. For the first time in my life I voted Republican and will remain independent for ever now. Harry Reid, Obama and Pelosi- the 3 stooges no longer represent true Democratic values. They cater to the radicals, the lazy, and the illegal. Most of America does not hold their philosophy and they will bankrupt this country with all their give way pork-filled programs. See - unemployment is still rising, foreclosures are rising, discontent is rising, the dollar is going down, our enemies are getting bolder ..... but the 3 stooges are so proud of the fact that many of America's enemies are now praising Obama. That should set off a few alarms ya think ? They are more concerned with rushing a health care bill that will pay back all of Obams rich backers like George Soros, and destroy our quality health care.

They are both followers of Saul Alinsky, the man who taught his followers how to defame and slander their political opposition. The improvement of Hillary is that she doesn't have the degree of Barack's narcissistic disorder, she is smart, and didn't come from the bruising history of rejection that gutted Barack's soul and left him focusing his narcissistic rage at America. Hillary would have been strong before Putin. Barack is strong before the weak, and weak before the strong, typical of the bruised sociopath whose words never match the truth. He needed therapy, not affirmative action.

I voted for Hillary.Hillary won more votes than any person to ever run for president.Hillary was robbed and told to lay down shut up and take it.Bros before hoes. The new socialists Dems told the old blue dog Dems to step aside, that from now on we don't need you.Brazile was emphatic on CNN when she told us to stay home.Well I don't have to have a house fall on me.But instead of staying home I went out and voted for Sarah Palin.I will never vote Dem again until they get rid of the communists and socialists in the party. After the way they treated not only Hillary but her husband it will be a cold day in Hell before I forgive and forget. And the biggest problem is the American people letting the news media elect our president. This has to end.

Let's correct something in your article regarding the insurance companies getting richer. 60% of the health insurance market is controlled by non-profit insurers. The remaining 40% have the second lowest return on equity of any American industry. This info is easy to verify and should have been done before writing this article.

Insurance companies are the messenger of the high cost of health care. You must treat the underlying problem if you want to solve this issue.

It just doesn't help to hear the "what have we done" confessions by Democrats and Independents now. Hillary wiped the floor with him in the debates; she campaigned on her platform not one created by focus groups; and she went on long after the MSM and big-named Democrats told her to lie down and shut-up.

She has made peace with her loss and is out fighting for America even though the administration doesn't look like she hoped it would.

I hope we can hold it together through his 1-term presidency. I so know that I'll never be a registered Democrat again because I saw how easily a pop star candidate took it over.

In the meantime, just how many freedoms will be lost, lack of decent health care for our elderly, and how low will the dollar go, due to Obama?

I will say it, he is a traitor to our Constitution, everything he is doing is causing the dollar to fall lower, to cost us more jobs and tax anything and everything!

God help us!

I will say I want the bumper sticker that was on a car in Florida that showed the round stars and stripes that Obama used during campaigning but this one said,"Are You Sorry Yet?", where do I get one. I did not vote for him and now I am afraid we will never see this country strong again. I returned from Isreal and the comments made there is Obama is weak. Beam up Scotty!!!

This summer Our Dear Leader Obama and his fellow criminals in the congress voted NOT to give SS recipients a COLA. There has been a COLA every year since 1974 but the Dems get in and kill it. Yesterday Obama says he will give each SS citizen $250.00 which is 70 cents a day. My response is "Obama put that money where the sun "don't shine". He thinks we can we bought off cheap and I have to admit that most seniors voted for him (NOT ME!) The million dollar question is will seniors learn their lesson and NOT vote for another him in 2012 if God forbid he runs again? No, I don't think so. They have been trained to check democrat just like the blacks in our society. Sounds a little racist doesn't it but admit it, this is true.

Any President would have made the GOP look reasonable after the Bush years since the Bush years were all about obsessively blaming every possible problem, from weather patterns to oil prices on the GOP/Bush and taking absolutely no responsibility for the results of voting on things like PATRIOT and Iraq. ANYONE stepping into the position of President, with all it's responsibilities and cold realities would have to face the fact that problems exist independent of party or politics.

And, Michael, there is a difference between Democrats and Conservative Republicans. (However, not Conservative Democrats.) Any Conservative president will, given a majority in Congress, guide America back to its representative Republic roots. Two or three Conservative presidents in a row will stop Socialism cold.

But for trying to tell the so-called progressive community that he was not a liberal but a cautious incrementalist with no core beliefs, I was called a stupid, racist, bitter, dead ender.

Now we all have to suffer for that blindness.

Caro: He was my senator too. I shared your experience. It was a completely awful couple of years. I still sting a bit from the rancor sent my way, simply for pointing out the truths.

I am enjoying watching the regrets take shape among those who are now beginning to admit they were had. Unfortunately, many of them were the biggest media cheerleaders of all - who helped to drive this out-of-control bus right to the White House.
