Global warming consensus: garbage in, garbage out

By: Michael Barone
Senior Political Analyst
November 29, 2009

As Air Force One heads to Copenhagen for the climate summit Dec. 9, it will presumably not make a U-turn while flying over the Climate Research Unit at University of East Anglia near Norwich, England. But perhaps it should. The 61 megabytes of CRU e-mails and documents made public by a hacker cast serious doubt on the ballyhooed consensus on man-made global warming that the Copenhagen summit was called to address.

The CRU has been a major source of data on global temperatures, relied on by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But the e-mails suggest that CRU scientists have been suppressing and misstating data and working to prevent the publication of conflicting views in peer-reviewed science periodicals. Some of the more pungent e-mails:

"I can't see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin and I will keep them out somehow -- even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

"Can you delete any e-mails you may have had with Keith re AR4?"

"I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."

"The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty we can't."

"I'm getting hassled by a couple of people to release the CRU temperature station data. Don't any of you three tell anybody that the UK has a Freedom of Information Act!"

You get the idea. The most charitable plausible explanation I have seen comes from the Atlantic's Megan McArdle. "The CRU's main computer model may be, to put it bluntly, complete rubbish."

Australian geologist Ian Plimer, a global warming skeptic, is more blunt. The e-mails "show that data was massaged, numbers were fudged, diagrams were biased, there was destruction of data after freedom of information requests, and there was refusal to submit taxpayer-funded date for independent examination."

Global warming alarmist George Monbiot of the Guardian concedes that the e-mails "could scarcely be more damaging," adding, "I'm dismayed and deeply shaken by them." He has called for the resignation of the CRU director.

All of which brings to mind the old computer geek's phrase: Garbage in, garbage out.

The Copenhagen climate summit was convened to get the leaders of nations to commit to sharp reductions in carbon dioxide emissions -- and thus sharp reductions in almost all energy usage, at huge economic cost -- in order to prevent disasters that supposedly were predicted with absolute certainty by a scientific consensus.

But that consensus was based in large part on CRU data that was, to take the charitable explanation, "complete rubbish" or, to take the more dire view, the product of deliberate fraud.

Quite possibly the CRU e-mailers were sincere in their belief that they were saving the planet. Like Al Gore, they wanted to convince the world's elites that the time for argument is over, the scientific consensus is clear and those who disagree can be dismissed as cranks (and should be disqualified from receiving research grants). If they had to cut a few corners, well, you have to break eggs to make an omelette.

For those of us who have long suspected that constructing scientific models of climate and weather is an enormously complex undertaking quite possibly beyond the capacity of current computer technology, the CRU e-mails are not so surprising.

Do we really suppose that anyone can construct a database of weather observations for the entire planet and its atmosphere adequate to make confident predictions of weather and climate 60 years from now? Predictions in which we have enough confidence to impose enormous costs on the American and world economies?

Copenhagen, despite Barack Obama's presence, seems sure to be a bust; there will be no agreement on mandatory limits on carbon emissions. Even if there were, it would probably turn out to be no more effective than the limits others agreed to in Kyoto in 1997. In any case, China and India are not going to choke off their dazzling economic growth to please Western global warming alarmists.

The more interesting question going forward is whether European and American governmental, academic and corporate elites, having embraced global warming alarmism with religious fervor, will be shaken by the scandalous CRU e-mails. They should be.

Way to go, Mr. Barone. At last an honest courageous reporter and you can also write. Thank you...you have given me hope in the media...at least the Examiner! Good work!

Obama and his fixers are frantically trying to calmly ignore this scandal !

Nov 29, 2009

With/without the scandal, if Obama signs, there should be immediate charges under "High Crimes and Misdemeanors", as attempting to sign away US sovereignty, steal the wealth of the citizens and probably more, constitute improper actions (misdemeanors), as a start.
If Congress were to ratify, all hell will break loose.
It is time to begin nullification of every unconstitutional "law" on the books.

Too many have no clue what just happened. Faith in the “peer review” has taken a big hit. This is similar to the destruction of faith in “risk management” that the banks just went through. I wonder what the equivalent to a recession is in academia?

Has Michael Barone joined the world's oldest profession, having sold himself to the coal and oil interests? He flatly denies what we can all see, that the polar ice caps and Greenland and glaciers are melting, that resources are being depleted, that overpopulation is threatening instability in the Third World and the oil countries, that forests that hold carbon are being whacked down. That's OK, Michael, keep your head in the sand amd ignore the consensus of scientists the world over. Climate change deniers are the new KnowNothings. Who will they come crying to when the crisis deepens?

Nick Beddoes - you asked: "Who will they come crying to when the crisis deepens?"

Answer: Not you, nor your "smart" friends. You act as if us "little people" need to be guided and "helped" through life by folks just like you.

Actually, we don't. We don't need you, nor your fabricated myth, nor your "smart" friends, nor even your "ideas" to get along just fine.

But, interestingly, you and your kind always NEED us to change our lives, don't you? No matter what year is on the calendar, your kind is always harping about how other people need to change or "bad" things will happen - as if you are "smarter" or "wiser" (what joke).

"Climate change deniers are the new KnowNothings."

Nick,
Wow, seriously, wow! After the revelation of lies and the manipulation of both data and the peer review process, you don't have the sense to shut up for a week or two and reassess your position? Apparently your knowledge of science is matched by your expertise in American history: the phrase Know Nothing referred to a certain Anti-Catholic party's vow of secrecy (you took an oath to tell any outsider you "know nothing" about the party.). It has nothing to do with refusing knowledge or facts.

jportent

Nov 29, 2009

The "O" admin is scarcely interested in factual support or lack thereof for their agenda. Concession of US sovereignty and progress toward a "global governance" is a key goal, climate crisis is a tool to advance that quest. We should all watch statements by China in support of a "deal" in Copenhagen; China will agree to minor national concessions to "reduce CO2 emissions" but will not sign on to any specific targets. China will side with those who demand US self destruction through foolish cap 'n tax regimes. They are committed to economic dominance over US and the west. This is their ticket, and Obama is their boy!

Whenever somebody says "consensus among scientist" that person has no concept of the scientific method or how scientist work. There is NEVER a consensus in science! We question even generally accepted concept. To this day we are still testing Newton's idea of gravity by building a multi-million dollar tower to drop objects down. In science there is no such thing as "consensus."

The global-warming-is-man's-fault lens is now so second nature to so many that it will take a lot to dislodge this socially constructed quasi-religion. The money, reputations, and time invested in this fantasy have been so great that I don't see it disintegrating rapidly or anytime soon. I think there may well be a tipping point for AGW: When the MSM and other formerly loyal adherents start actively investigating these jokers with the fervor of a 60 Minutes report or the NY Times Abu Graib exposure. Then you will see all hell break loose. But religious zeal is hard to break through unless there are some significant interventions. The CRU document dump is one such intervention.

I find it curious that people love to hear that we humans are evil and a disease on the planet; they don't see we are part of the planet. It must be a suicidal weakness of the human condition. I will let more brilliant people than myself explain that one.

Copenhagen will go on as planned by the planning planners, demonstrating for all that as a political phenomena it's not about the environment, or the climate, or even science. It's about power. First the left tried to use economics to convince us that we needed to let them take control of EVERYTHING, but that failed; now and for the last 30 years they've been trying to use ecology to justify their quest for total power. I wonder what they'll co-opt next?

The answer to the question in the last paragraph is easy. NO! Power and money is the objective and the science is irrelevant.

Nov 30, 2009

I would still like to hear the CRU's explanation for the contents of the emails, and an evaluation of the exposed information by respected climatologists not associated with the CRU. To many of the people making blanket statements that all the science behind AGW is junk have no expertise in the field, and that in itself should make one take what they say with a grain of salt.

Our local paper (The Oregonian) is still ignoring this fraud, and its exposure. Unbelievable how such an important story can be "un-happened" by our media gatekeepers.
Just because the fundamental studies which led us to believe that global warming exists are faked doesn't mean there is no such thing. No Wait,it does.

"For those of us who have long suspected that constructing scientific models of climate and weather is an enormously complex undertaking quite possibly beyond the capacity of current computer technology, the CRU e-mails are not so surprising."

Actually, they are. It turns out the fudging is not in the complicated theoretical models, but in the far simpler and more basic process of honestly averaging weather station temperatures to get global average temperatures. That's why this is so explosive--- it casts doubt not just on the models that predict temperatures will rise, but even on whether temperatures have risen already.

GJP

Nov 30, 2009

It's not the GIGO that stinks!!! It's the computer program they are using that converts temperature declines into increases!! These Warmers are complete frauds and should be prosecuted.

It doesn't matter whether you believe in AGW or don't. If the data and methodology appear tainted, (and they certainly do)(again, no actual judgment)then all of Jones, Mann et al work must be either thrown away or redone by others.
The IPCC cannot in good faith use the data or opinions for any policy until this has been put to rest.
Also, all raw data, formulas, methods and notes must be released to any people scientists or not who want to tackle the problem.
Since, it is unlikely that they will be releasing any data etc. I have to come to the conclusion that their work is fraud.
Jones, Mann prove me wrong please.

I agree that the MSM's intentional cover up of the largest scandal in the history of science, is just jaw dropping. In the past I have not been sure whether to believe that the plan all along was the creation of a world government, run exclusively by hard-left liberals and supported by a media eager to lie, attack, and cover up for them. But frankly, I can not think of any other explanation that makes sense. For the MSM to not even care that they (and everybody else) has obviously been lied to and manipulated for years, there must be an extremely large hidden agenda in play.

Aldomeir

Nov 30, 2009

As much as there may be scandal with the e-mails, it is the programs, data files and other associated files that are more interesting. The Charlie_Readme.TXT file has over 11,000 lines of comments, most to the effect "What does that dataset mean?", "Where did those numbers come from?" and "Which dataset should be used here?". And he was trying to match to ACTUAL/known temps. And could only get about 95% agreement.

No, I don't think that we can apply charitable interpretations here: they really were trying to hide data; they really did delete data after FOI requests; they really did try, and with some success, hijack the peer review process. And Michael Mann? He really did submit demonstrably false conclusions.

And Al Gore? So much sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The global warming crisis advocates have managed to create Climategate by insisting that the world is experiencing "unprecedented" global warming and that climate models can predict into the future. Neither contention is supported by scientific fact. Here's information related to these two false contentions:

Mr. Obama's Czarina Carol Browner say's it makes no difference that the information was false, she will rely on preconceived judgments! She sure hates to see this go down the toilet, she had positioned herself to make a huge amount of money with a brokerage dealing with energy offsets. Would be revealing to see just how many of those pushing this disaster were set to make millions or like Algore, billions. Can you believe that we have an idiot like Browner in government?

They won't have too. The conference proposes to shake down the economies of the first world countries to create a fund to pay for the compliance by the others. For the millionth time, this is extortion, not science.

Its how these loons operate so keep your eyes open for the next lurch into another contrivance.
