Independents desert Obama, putting 2010 in play

(AP)

Independent voters are turning away from President Obama and his fellow Democrats in droves. And if they can't find a way to get them back, the party could be in deep trouble for 2010 and beyond.

Independents gave Obama the White House last year with a vote for pragmatic competence. They have been repaid with partisanship and dithering. And unlike liberals who Obama has quickly re-energized after their summer doldrums, independents are devilishly hard to win back once they lose faith.

The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, the Rolls-Royce of public surveys, showed that for the first time, independents disapproved of the president's performance, 46 percent to 41 percent.

For the first few months of the Obama administration, independents, who make up about 43 percent of the electorate, reflected overall public opinion in giving the president consistent approval ratings of about 60 percent. But now, unaffiliated voters are less positive than the overall electorate, which is holding steady at 51 percent job approval for Obama.

More shocking is that independent voters now favor a Republican-controlled Congress by a four-point margin and would overwhelmingly like to see their own member of the House replaced.

Those are the kinds of numbers you see before electoral hurricanes like 1966 or 1994. And if independents are already at that point after so recently enduring the shoddy performance of the previous GOP majority, it's a sign of real dissatisfaction. Democrats have grown very jittery about the congressional elections in 2010.

In 2008, exit polls show Obama won independent voters 52 percent to 44 percent, a dramatic departure from the previous two cycles. John Kerry won 49 percent to George W. Bush's 48 percent. In 2000, Bush won independents 47 percent to Al Gore's 45 percent thanks to Ralph Nader's 7 percent share of the group.

Much of Obama's success can be attributed to the implausibility of the McCain candidacy. The Republican's internal bickering and erratic campaign did not look good against the cool calm of the Obama effort. That played to the independent preference for competence over ideology.

That's why one area of the Journal poll should particularly alarm the president and his handlers. There has been a nine-point drop in public confidence in Obama's goals and polices. That's the competency question and now only 45 percent of people are feeling confident instead of the 54 percent from the spring.

Public approval for the president's handling of the economy has remained steady at about 50 percent, and the personal affection toward the man has remained steadily high at 77 percent.

The cause of the drop is foreign policy, where the approval for the president's performance dropped 7 points since July to 50 percent.

That's big trouble for a president who had to work very hard to convince voters that he was sincere when he said, "I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars."

Independents now account for the largest segment of the voting public, a reflection of the skeptical bent of our society. Believing that one party or another is morally superior or has the right answers seems rather quaint in this era. Plus, our geographically and socially mobile nation is producing fewer rock-ribbed Republicans and yellow-dog Democrats.

However cynical Americans become about politics and parties, though, that does not mean that we hold nothing sacred.

Gallup regularly surveys Americans on their confidence in different institutions and right up at the top, ahead of perennial favorites small business and religion, you will consistently find the military.

Already high, confidence in the armed forces climbed to 82 percent this summer as the transition out of Iraq began. Contrast that with confidence in newspapers (25 percent) or big business (16 percent).

That's why Obama was careful to play on the idea that President Bush had not listened to his military commanders about Iraq. It wasn't military adventurism that hurt Bush, it was the belief that he and Donald Rumsfeld ignored commanders' advice about troops and resources.

Now, Obama is ignoring the desperate-sounding pleas of his hand-picked commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, for more troops.

We hear that Obama is waiting to see what happens next before deciding to continue with his own strategy of an Afghan surge. His team is reading a book about how the Kennedy administration was led astray by the military and holding a series of meetings about the way forward.

A flip-flop on what Obama called a "war of necessity" just last might well send the independents to the exits for good.

Obama is losing his fecal grip, but we can't rest. AMNESTY IS HIS GOAL!!!

People are not doing the math correctly. Most illegals are men here without their immediate family members. Once they are added to the Amnesty total, the grand total could easily top 80 million.

Think about the consequences...

Minimum wages would fall through the floor and welfare, like a heaven to millions of them, would be bankrupted. The middle class would disappear almost overnight.

Once here, you can kiss America goodbye and say hello to one party socialist rule.

It's clear that the excesses and paternalistic ambitions of the Obama administration need to be reined in, and quickly. Obama, however well-intentioned he may be, is spending money (or should I say issuing debt, since the federal government is effectively bankrupt) like a drunken sailor in an attempt to have the federal welfare state enlarged to new heights. I won't expound on his previous rewards of taxpayer funds funneled to the irresponsible -- banks, carmakers and greedy or overreaching home buyers. It has to end.

But he transcends race, and sex, and religions, and party politics and ...

By that press description, often heard during the campaign (is the campaign over yet?), he sounds as though he is a chameleon. I think he is a snake though.

He transcends nothing - he is the most partisan president in memory. And he keeps throwing allies and capitalists - and now seemingly our military - under the bus. Israel, Czechs, Poland, eastern Europe, former soviet states, Hondurus, the Brits - marginalizing us at the UN.
This guy is not UN-American, he is ANTI-American.
Illegals? They see the US as a land of opportunity - but why should they support Obama politics? It too much resembles the corrupt, strong armed government of Mexico? I guess they see opportunity at least for the time being...

The truth is, Obama is just another politician. That's it. Not a savior. Not a saint. At the end of the day, he's pushing his agenda using fear-mongering, deceit and disingenuous rhetoric. Standard operating procedure, despite all the lofty rhetoric about doing things differently. He believes the federal government should be rescuing everyone from their own irresponsibility, never mind the poor state of the nation's finances. He also apparently believes that the amount of debt the nation can incur is infinite.

Obama is not just another politician. He is a true believing fascist a la Mussolini. He wants to issue gag orders and use the state he is expanding to threaten anyone who opposes or criticizes him, from Humana on down. He plans to censor the internet and radio and TV and put the newspapers in his pay and control. He is evil and every word he says is a lie.

You sheeple accept his lies and evil as a form of affirmative action and racism on your part. You think a black man isn't capable of respecting civil liberties or telling the truth so you excuse him.

Candidate Obama promised a new way forward, President Obama is following the old way.

Unfortunately his policies are proving to be statist partisan neo liberalism.

We need a sheriff in DC, someone who will root out all the corruption and do what's right for the US.

Note how baffled the administration is by sinking polls, tea parties, town halls, and, in general, “them” — the vast middle class, which, as we learned during the campaign, clings to guns and Bibles, and which has now been written off as blinkered, racist, and xenophobic.Adios Liberal lunacy.

I remember an interview with John Travolta where he talked about a meeting he had with Quinten Tarrantino, as Tarrantino was casting for Pulp Fiction. Travolta said Tarrentino subjected him to a rather rude tirade about how Travolta had screwed up his career by making bad decisions/choices. Tarrantino concluded by saying "but that's OK; I'm going to fix all that for you". The arrogance! But Travolta wasn't angry; there was a sort of innocence about Tarrantino. He didn't mean to be rude, he really wanted to help.

This reminds me of Obama. All these apologies overseas, and 24/7 belittling of America...that is the America that existed BEFORE Obama got elected. Now that Obama is in office, he's going to fix everything for us. We were baaaad before, but now we'll be goooood.

It's arrogant (and narcissistic) as well as naive.

The wussieness of so many independents, who wisely chose Obama over McCain, is such that all they find in the middle of the road are yellow lines and dead armadillos. The Dems may not be too well coordinated, but at least they are living in the right century and not in GOP Lalaland.

Wait till the independents see the the ballot of Palin and some other evangelical, then they will say better with this guy who at least understands 21 century issues. being dissppointed with obama is one thing but how will the Conservative party( formerly known as republican party ) show they they actually have anything better to offer.

Sep 24, 2009

This healthcare thing is nothing new. The democrats actually try to improve our society and rush's armies of talk radio patriots scream that our forefathers are being violated by radical changes and then evenually once the change is made 20 years later, the change is accepted. Just like the racial
legislation of the early 1960s. Even William Buckley admitted that conservatives were a bit behind the curve on racial issues. That's how it always is , the democrats ( not that they any less corrupt) have to carry your dead weight on their shoulders as they at least try to deal with the realities of the 21 st century. But don't worry about libs, the real change drivers are in China. Right now China knows where they are heeded in 5 years, and it ain't going to be drll baby drill

It's interesting that the Obama Administration is "reading a book about how the Kennedy administration was led astray by the military"... I would hope that they already had some of their own experts, and ideas.

Maybe they don't know that Kennedy is the one who started the Vietnam War, and his successor, Johhnson, who continued the war, killed over 58,000 Americans, for no good reason that anyone can discern, because the politicians ran the war, and did not listen to the military.

I hope that if Obama decides to cut and run, that he will do it immediately, and not worry about the political implications while soldiers are dying.

The military led the Kennedy administration astray? Poor Robert McNamara- fooled again. When all the comparisons to Kennedy were being made I never imagined the one thing Obama would imulate about Kennedy would be his Vietnam policy- and in Afgahnistan of all places. This is scary.

People must deal with facts. Obama ran against Bush's Iraq war, with no other position, until McCain said he did not understand economics that well, and the economy collapsed, weeks before voting. Scared, disgusted voters opted for change and hope. What they got was a far left Congress and President, a theater of war that we are losing, a continuing possibility of collapse of our economy, high unemployment eternally, global warming religion, and no results. We are learning that the New York subway, or Giants field may be the target of a weapon of mass destruction, something many refuse to believe exists.
2010 may not come for some voters.

Don't you get it, we give each side 8 years at most then we vote them out because all these politicians just vote for pork to get elected and we get fed up with them. That's the whole point, the repubs will never cut spending cause then they won't get elected. They just talk the talk for all narrow minded rural chevy drivers and then they turn around and ship your jobs to India. No congressman will vote to cut spending.

Reading the post of crack pots and truth benders...I am sure President Obama fine. First off, understand both Bush and Clinton had some drop in numbers at this critical point.

However, unlike Bush and Clinton the contempt for the other party is growing at a faster rate than the downturn of the president's poll number.

IE If Health Care reform failed who would you blame? A majority Democrat, Independent and Republicans said Republican.

To be an alternative--you have to have ideas.

By the way, I am African American and I can trace my heritage to two US Senators pre civil war. Where would this country be if we had imposed immigration rules then

Well it's pretty clear Obama is losing the Independent voters in droves now. The only ones still firmly behind him are the Libs way to the Left. Daily people are leaving his support column, now there is talk the Repubs might well take the house back in 2010. At least if they could win 20 to 25 seats, that would stop this social takeover and destruction of our country in it's tracks... The only thing in Obama's way right now are a few patriotic blue dog dems siding with their country over their party. If he pays this group off we will be in much worse shape than now...

When you have a problem with poison weeds growing up a tree a little Round Up sprayed on the roots kills the weeds…not matter how far up the tree it’s grown.

This group had a plan that was put in place and the roots are in our towns and state government. That is an important part of their implementation plan.

Time for a Round Up Party on this next election. Spray the roots in your own home towns and states. I know I will be working to make sure that the true working classes in this country who pay their taxes are represented in this next election.

Time for action not words. See you at Round Up time 2010.
