Obama bows, but the world refuses to bow back

By: Michael Barone
Senior Political Analyst
November 18, 2009

On his 10-day trip to Asia and in his 10th month in office, Barack Obama is beginning to encounter limits on his ambition to change the world. Even as he bowed to the king of Saudi Arabia last April and to the emperor of Japan last week, the world refuses to bow back.

This is not how it was supposed to be. "I am absolutely certain that generations from now," he said on the night he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in June 2008, "we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last best hope on Earth."

We're still working on a lot of that. The Democrats are having a problem passing a health care bill in the Senate (though somehow a lot of sick people are being cared for), and those good jobs will have to wait, it appears, for the December "jobs summit." Whether the rise of the oceans has begun to slow is unclear to me; we had a cool summer and a warm fall here in Washington.

As for the planet beginning to heal, well, that's not clear. Obama evidently expected that his election would change not only America's image in the world but the policies of nations both friendly and unfriendly. In saluting the fall of the Berlin Wall, on videotape, he made no mention of Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher, Lech Walesa or John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev or Vaclav Havel, but cited as a world-changing event his own election in the United States 19 years later.

Obama has often said that all the world's nations have shared interests, and during his campaign he made clear his willingness to meet with leaders of enemy countries in order to reach agreements. His idea seemed to be that his own eloquence and his own example would make the scales fall from their eyes and enable them to see that it was in their interest to do what he would like.

So far, not so good. The mullahs of Iran have consented to something in the nature of negotiations, but their agreement in principle to allow the enrichment of nuclear fuel in France has, like many agreements in principle, turned out to be no agreement. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the mullahs have proved no more moveable by Obama's emollient and respectful tones than by George W. Bush's Texas twang.

Nor have we made any discernible progress on settling issues between Israel and the Palestinians, the first priority of Obama's national security adviser. Obama's insistence on a stop to natural growth of Israeli settlements -- no new spare rooms for Grandma or the new baby -- seems now to have been abandoned. Israelis are distrustful of the U.S., and the West Bank Palestinian leader is threatening to quit.

Obama's unilateral concession to the Russians -- abandonment of missile defense plans in Poland and the Czech Republic -- has evoked statements from Russian President Dmitri Medvedev that sanctions against Iran may someday be necessary. But it's beginning to look as if Medvedev is Lucy, sanctions are the football and Obama is Charlie Brown.

The leaders of China, despite Obama's refusal to meet the Dalai Lama, are sticking to their peg to the dollar and, like the leaders of India, have shown zero willingness to damage their growing economy by raising energy prices to avert the global warming that will supposedly bring catastrophe 50 years from now. So Obama at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit was forced to concede that there would be no agreement on a global climate treaty next month in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Obama's election was indeed a major event, as the election of every American president is, and the election of our first African-American president was a landmark in our history, as John McCain noted on election night. But it didn't change the world. All nations may have the same interests in some platonic sense. But all nations' leaders don't. Bush didn't cause all our foreign policy problems, and Obama's ascension and appeasement don't seem to be solving them.

I am convinced that Obama's master plan is to strip money from the Defense Department and distribute it to his friends.

Obama is the rainmaker for educators, union bosses, trial lawyers, bureaucrats, Chicago politicians, and many other miscellaneous Democrats and leftists. They all want a piece of the Defense Department, and Obama is trying to give it to them with his weird version of a charm offensive.

Sadly, rather than teaching the world to sing in perfect harmony, the result of Obama's efforts will more likely be a dirty nuke in Manhattan or downtown D.C.

President' Obama's egotism is getting in the way of his ability to be an effective leader. Call it narcissism or whatever the clinical name in psychology may be, but the man's desire to be liked, to be the constant center of attention, to believe in the power of his own mythology, is simply unhealthy. I'm beginning to believe that the major events of his childhood -- an absent father, constant upheaval of the household to different locales, being sent to live with his grandparents -- have left some latent psychological scars that are manifesting themselves now.

Thank God we have a President who is improving our relationship around the world. Lets see, Eisenhower bowed to President DeGalle, Nixon bowed to the Chinese several times, and President Bush held hands and hug and gave an Impromptu back rub to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and could not find his way out of a meeting room. Can you say HYPOCRITE?

Nov 18, 2009

Oh and Bush senior fainted. Remember? Ratings for the U.S. in Japan, China and South Korea are more positive than they were in 2008, but the improvements in U.S. image in these three countries have been much less dramatic than in Indonesia, India, Nigeria and in the Western European and Latin American countries survey. The Republicans are the opposition party the party of no. This trial in NY is a prime example. If he decided to keep the trial on the military base they would say he is weak. What a bunch of whinnies.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

NO way can we compete with foreigners earning 50 cents per hr. Business leaders, politicians, globalists, and Unions have all contributed to our job losses.

Social engineering societies, by the elites of this world, has not worked and will not work!

Unions even want illegal aliens, just for more monthly dues. Strong arming business owners with their thuggish ways...they do not work for their members, they work for more dues!

Politicians get perks, and continue FREE trade and not FAIR trade...now they know we cannot compete and will not speak the truth....which is, we have to trade our way of life, to a style more like Mexico's!

Tell your kids, the days of our land of opportunity are over, and they will be working for peanuts in the future!

I mean these idiots think Sarah Palin should run for President. They sit there and look a FAUX news all evening, listen to Jobba the Hutt Limbaugh in the mornings and FOX and friends and nothing else. I mean read this newspaper. All the opinions are the same. No matter what Obama does, they complain. Is a newspaper supposed to be completely bias like this? Why not change its name to the Washington NeoCon Examiner? Can they have just one commentator unbiased? Its just a travesty.

The sum totals of Obama's conduct in the foreign policy sphere -- deliberating to the point of absurdity on Afghanistan; refusing to meet with the Dalai Lama until after his China trip; backing down on a missile shield in eastern Europe without extracting concessions from Russia; abstaining from attending the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall celebrations -- telegraph a president who is skilled at grandstanding and rhetoric, but not at achieving substantive and assured foreign policy.

Dick Nixon

Nov 18, 2009

In closing, I'll say that world leaders -- allies and troublemakers alike -- are not stupid. They are picking up very quickly on the fact that Obama is an egocentric leader eager to please and drop a nice speech, but not possessing any backbone or decisiveness.

This Appeaser-in-Chief is on Carter's heels though with his rebranding of 'Crisis'.
'Health INSURANCE ('care' is a joke) Crisis' - when more than 4 out of 5 people have health INSURANCE.
'Financial crisis' - whereas the 'stimulus' money has oly hamstringed small - moderate sized businesses.
'Climate crisis' - Hmmm, interesting considering temperatures have either remained stable or gone down since '98. And please, don't use AP, IPCC/WMO propaganda to argue the fact.

As a Christian I am happy to finally have a humble president. America must get over its ego if it is ever to be a true partner with other nations in solving global issues. Jesus taught us to be humble and to love our neighbors. If Christ's feet were washed by a social/political outsider (as they were) then surely our president can also humble himself before our neighbors, reach out in love, and foster solutions.

Gentlemen, it's not that 0 bowed to the Emperor - that's a reasonable choice, and it has precedents. It's that he bowed ALL WRONG. That deep bow from the waist, with eyes going to the floor - totally subservient. Nixon's 15 degree bow - just right, and a matter of choice. 0 looks like a complete rube. Doesn't he have a protocol office to tell him HOW to bow? Or does he think he's so culturally sensitive that any old bow would do?

For Bush to hold hands and kiss the the Saudi King - culturally appropriate. For the US President to bow a little to the emperor - also appropriate. But the full 90 degree prostration, following his bow to the Saudi King? Not appropriate. He's a rube. No experience.

So now the moral God Fearing Republicans are pushing a new slogan making its way onto car bumpers and across the Internet. It reads simply: “Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8”. A nice sentiment? Maybe not. The psalm reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” But the verse immediately following the psalm referenced is a bit more ominous: “Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.” So now you hateful right wing, hollier than thou cretins are praying for Obama's death.

The methods of foreign policy and international affairs have been tested throughout history. President Obama has ignored history and is attempting to create a multipolar world by making the U.S. position in the world weaker. If anybody in the world likes what Obama is doing, it is because they see opportunities to take advantage of the chaos to come.

John...Obama is not showing humility. It is his ego that is leading him in a futile attempt to change the entire world. Oh...and by the way, Jesus' sayings applied to the person not nations. Let's not make Obama the messiah that he wants to be.

I don't see what all the uproar is about. Any educated person would know that bowing in Japan is the cultural norm. It's the same as kissing someone's cheek in Latin America. He isn't apologizing or putting himself beneath the Emperor. Obama is just showing that he is aware of their cultural norms. Get over it, it's not that serious.

Research Before Responding

Nov 19, 2009

I am amazed at the fact that some Americans, in particular, the writer of this article has made such a huge deal about OUR current president bowing to the Japenese leader. So, for those who care to research which presidents have bowed to other leaders in the past please note: President Nixon, while in office, bowed to Emperor of Japan Hirohito; President Eisenhower, while in office, bowed to French President Charles De Gaulle; and George W. Bush, while in office, bowed to the Pope and a Saudi Prince. So, all of those who get there information from others with a political agenda should take a moment to do a little more research on the presidency and those who have preceded him. In other words, learn to think for yourselves by first reading and researching factual informaton.

For all you perople saying that this is Japan's cultural norm:

NO IT's NOT. And you're only revealing your ignorance, apparently shared by the president, when you say it is.

For the last time, it is WILDLY IMPROPER to attempt a bow while shaking hands in Japan. In fact, people travelling to Japan are warned to just shake hands where possible, which is what EVERY world leader does when greeting the Japanese emperor nowadays. This gesture was extremly awkward and embarssing for the emperor and his wife.

You folks are just like the guy you elected--arrogant, and so convinced that you already know everything worth knowing simply because you consider yourself "broad-minded." In reality, you're completely incurious about the world around you, so much so that you just assume that shaking and bowing hands at the same time is somehow customary in Japan, or that an American president is expected to bow before the emperor of Japan as a matter of politeness.

Because the Emperor did now bow back. In Japan, the subordinates bow and the superiors stay upright. All the Emperor got out of the bow was that he was superior to obama. Obama admitted he was weaker than the Emperor. Like it or not, that's what all the japanese people are reading. Remember, the Emperor did not bow back. Think people, think.

Some of you may not like it that US Republicans Presidents bow, but its protocol, you might not understand it or like it but Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower and Richard Milhous Nixon, did jus that. Even George Walker Bush, kissed and held hands with Saudi Prince Abdullah but I guess memory is always selective.
