Obama expresses frustration at criticism

By: Julie Mason

A new note is creeping in to President Obama's campaign speeches lately -- a frustrated tone sharply at odds with the hope and change themes of less than a year ago.

As he travels this week on behalf of Democratic candidates in multiple states, Obama is lashing out at his critics, and those who won't give him credit for nine months of work.

"I said this before, last week at a fundraiser -- I don't mind cleaning up the mess that some other folks made, that's what I signed up to do," Obama said. "But while I'm there mopping the floor I don't want somebody standing there saying, 'You're not mopping fast enough.' Or, 'You're not holding the mop the right way.' "

The shift comes even as health care reform, Obama's signature issue, appears finally to be making headway in Congress. And it heralds the start of an intense political season as both parties look to the 2010 midterm elections.

"I think they are fairly pleased with what's going on with health care reform, and they are thinking they are on the path to finally doing something," said John Fortier, a political scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. "On the other hand, the elections are coming up."

The White House is increasingly playing to its political base. Obama's expressions of frustration go directly to the feeling of many Democrats that Republicans are to blame for his difficulties with health care and other issues.

As part of that, the administration recently picked a fight with Fox News, creating a sideshow distraction that lasted nearly two weeks.

The president is making more pointed remarks about his critics. He told supporters in New York that some Republicans support him on health care reform -- noting they are mostly retired and that, "last time I checked, they're not socialist."

Obama in the meantime has shifted his schedule around, increasing his campaign-related travel while scaling back governance-related public events at the White House. His last formal press conference was in July.

At the same time, Obama's downward trajectory in the polls seems to have leveled off. The administration came through a tough August that saw a drop-off in public support for health care reform and in Obama job approval.

From a high point of 70 percent job approval at his inauguration, Obama has settled into about a 50 percent job approval rating -- a drop, but still a comfortable spot for an incumbent after a bruising nine-month start.

"It seems like they have a little bit more confidence, they are starting to hit back politically," Fortier said. "They got hit hard in August and now they feel like they at least have a floor under them."

If only he would give some thought to creating some jobs and making decisions about Afghanistan while he are jetting from campaign event to campaign event.

He may think he's mopping as fast as he can, but is he sure it's a mess that needs to be cleaned up or is it a mess that he is trying to create for anyone disagreeing with him (health insurance companies, Fox News, Chamber of Commerce)?

How long is the current mess someone elses mess ? What exactually have you done ? Oh, yeah, CASH FOR CLUNKERS. By the way, have the dealers been paid yet ? Just thought I'd ask. Then there is …. Oh, Mary-Jane Dope Houses. The WAR ON FOX NEWS. Now that is a noble endeavor. What else, besides thrills up freaks legs, and bowing to the world, groveling before the enemy, selling out our allies. I have to admit, you are one busy dude. Have you forgot, we're at war ? I sure hope that you haven:t been hitting on that glass pipe again. People who do that tend to forget things. So, when will cocaine be ok ? Is it ok now for advocates of NAMBLA to be with our children ? Was there a cure for that ? I missed it. This so far is a B MOVIE from Denmark.

Obama was in the Senate for four years. He contributed to the mess we're in. What budget did he ever vote against? What spending did he ever cut? Did he or did he not vote for TARP?

Please, Barack. Shut up.

This constant martyrdom rhetoric from Obama about "cleaning up someone else's mess" disturbs me. First off, Obama owes his election in large part to that same "mess." Secondly, yes, he inherited some problems domestically and with respect to foreign affairs -- what president didn't? When is he going to take responsibility for his policies and the agenda he is attempting to enact? He acts like he's a low-level, powerless bureaucrat. On top of that, by his own hand he has exacerbated many of these same problems he complains about! The national debt is exploding thanks to his trillion dollar giveaways to the irresponsible banks, auto companies and homeowners. And don't get me started on Obamacare.

Also, it occurs to me that when you take it upon yourself to run for the presidency, taking responsibility for the events and circumstances that occur on your watch -- even if the seeds of those outcomes were partly sown before you were sworn into office -- comes with the territory. That's called "leadership." Constantly looking for a scapegoat to blame for your own woes smacks of fecklessness and incompetence. I also think it's becoming glaringly apparent that the propaganda about Obama being a "Mr. Cool"-type personality who could roll with the punches and let everything slip off him like water off a duck's back is total BS. We are seeing now that he is a petulant, hyper-sesitive person who cannot take any negative press. Witness his infantile attacks on Fox News.

Amen brother! How many times can this guy keep blaming the Bush Administration. A real leader takes ownership on Day 1 to fix the problems, not add to the debt, lie to the American people on a daily basis, and make backroom deals to pass flawed legislation, all while breaking every campaign promise that landed him into the Oval Office. Seriously, can we IMPEACH OBAMA before year-end?

..'I don't mind cleaning up..'.

Is this narcissist EVER going to begin a dialogue, speech without placating blame elsewhere? It's the method of juveniles when about to get scolded for God's sake!

Manchurian-in-Chief is an egomaniac with NO substance.

I;m still astounded people with an I.Q. 80 tipped their cap to this dud in November '08..

Did Obama really think everyone was going to love him? I guess he didn't realize when people saw the real Obama,
they might have a different opinion.
Maybe he needs to seek out Rev. Wright
for a little moral support.

A shallow, arrogant, platitude-spouting, inexperienced, Marxist, drug-addicted, elitist, narcissistic, flip-flopping gas-bag simply CAN NOT HANDLE ANY CRITICISM. If EVERYBODY doesn't genuflect to him and sing his praises (as the indoctrinated school children under the control of the loony-left NEA teachers do), he goes berserk and lashes out at every person and organization that doesn't continually kiss his A.

"As he travels this week on behalf of Democratic candidates in multiple states, Obama is lashing out at his critics, and those who won't give him credit for nine months of work."

Credit? Doesn't he know we're in a financial crisis and there's a shortage of credit! Especially when you're the one making things a whole lot worse.

Besides, being "present" to just sign whatever Pelosi and Reid shove at him isn't worth much credit.

Being president isn't a pass-fail type of course. Why doesn't he grab a mop and clean up his own mess that he's so busy creating for all of us.

Earn that Nobel Prize. For a change.

Hmm, a lot of one-sided comments here.. Don't forget that the bank bailout was passed before Obama entered office. And the 'Obamacare' is a necessity- unless you'd prefer to ignore the approaching social security / medicare problems. We don't really have a choice.

@Dan

Irrespective of one's political leanings, there is nothing worse than opining based on ignorance. Yes, TARP was passed under BUsh, but only $350 billion was spent under his watch. The second $350 billion was authorized to be spent on Obama's watch. And you act like the "cash for clunkers" program and bailouts for irresponsible homeowners never happened. The man is driving the national debt up like no tomorrow and spending money like a drunken sailor. Lastly, your comment about Obamacare is outright laughable -- Obamacare would exacerbate the very insolvency faced by Medicare/SS by replicating the flaws inherent in the structure of those programs!! Please explain how a giant and costly new federal entitlement will shore up Medicare/SS. You will be eligible for the Nobel Prize in economics if you can articulate this impossibility.

He and his adm. haven't outgrown the grade school, bully tactics! He should keep expecting criticism until we see jobs return, until we see manufacturing start up again, and until we see an end to them spending us into oblivion!

Oh please Mr. President, you're acting like a 7 year old. It sure sounds to me like the honeymoon is over Mr. President and guess what....almost half the people in this county didn't vote for you and those that did vote for you are merely holding you accountable. It's time to put on your big boy pants Mr. President and quit blaming others.

@Guy Jones
See nothing in your comments that invalidate what I said.. so I'll just send your first sentence back to yourself. By the way, I think the 'clunker' program was a clunker and the homeowners are the ultimate 'at-fault' party (after all, they're breaking the contract- not the bank). Sadly, I find the one-sidedness of your rant no surprise. The current health bills reform Medicare to contain spending. Have you looked into the details? THIS is what must come to pass. I don't think it takes a Nobel Prize to figure that out. For some, maybe it does.

People who are hired to mop aren't supposed to clean out the cash register while they're at it...

Guy Jones

Oct 28, 2009

Again, your inability to comprehend basic facts is evident. Medicare/SS's total unfunded liabilities hover around $60 trillion. You claim to be able to find that amount in savings under Obamacare to shore up these programs? Obamacare trims a minuscule slice of fat from Medicare's spending; that's the reality. You posit that spending money will save money elsewhere; it's an absurd notion, but please continue to be blissful in your ignorance.

Better get used to it, Barry, 'cause it ain't gonna go away until you board AF1 bound for Chicago in 2013. We abhor your vision for our beautiful country and feel duped by your "hope and change" BS. You are done in 2012 and we're gonna have to bruise your ego a little in 2010 just to neuter you so you can't continue to devastate our country and destroy what is left of our free market system. You and Jimmy Carter will be the only one-term, Nobel Prize Winning "presidents" in the history of our country. But we recovered from Mr. Carter and will likewise recover from your attempts to turn our country into a Marxist Utopia. What an idiot! Counting the days.
