Obama's big change: He moves America to the Right

As promised, Barack Obama is bringing change to America. He's making it more Republican.

It's not that more people are actually becoming Republicans or calling themselves Republicans -- the number of voters who formally identify with the party is at its lowest point in years. But we appear to be in the early stages of a shift in which political independents, people who not too long ago were sick of Republicans, are now leaning toward GOP positions on some key issues.

They still call themselves independents, but they're worried by the left-leaning policies of President Obama and the Democratic Congress, especially on the economy. "The middle, which wanted to move away from George W. Bush, did not want to move this far left," says a Republican pollster who is tracking the shift. "They are tending to agree with what Republicans are saying more and more, despite the previous eight years."

For example, in a private poll done recently for the House GOP leadership, voters were asked whether they think the economic stimulus package is working. The two parties were on opposite sides of the question -- 60 percent of Democrats said the stimulus is working, and 79 percent of Republicans said it's not. But among independents, 57 percent said the stimulus is not working -- a number much closer to the Republican than the Democratic position.

When you look at public attitudes toward the budget, health care, the environment, and other top issues, you see a similar picture: Republicans and Democrats are on either end of the spectrum, but independents aren't exactly in the middle. They're leaning a little bit right. And even though Republicans remain unpopular, voters seem willing to take a new look at them, if only by default.

Last month's NBC/Wall Street Journal poll asked whether people would prefer to see next year's elections result in a Congress controlled by Democrats, or a Congress controlled by Republicans. People gave a slight edge to Democrats, 48 percent to 45 percent. Last year at this time, the Democratic lead was 19 points -- a clear move toward Republicans.

On a related issue, the Gallup organization is finding a new trend toward conservatism. Gallup conducts thousands of interviews with Americans each year and always asks respondents to describe their political views. So far in 2009, 40 percent of those surveyed call themselves conservative. That's up from 37 percent in 2007 and 2008, when the percentage of people who called themselves conservative fell to its lowest point in more than a decade.

The change is entirely attributable to movement among independents. In Gallup's 2008 interviews, 29 percent of independents described themselves as conservative. This year, 35 percent do.

Gallup cites a lot of factors to explain the shift. An increasing number of people believe there's too much government regulation of business; more people want the government to promote traditional values; more believe that labor unions are too influential in our politics; more oppose restrictive gun laws, and on and on.

The bottom line is, there is simply no doubt that the shift leftward that we saw from 2006 to 2008 has stopped and is now moving in the other direction.

It's no surprise that opinion moves back and forth. What is surprising is that it is starting so quickly. Not very long ago, we heard pundits tell us that our politics had changed, that we were entering an age of Obama, that the sun had set on the Republicans' cherished notion of America as a center-right country.

It turns out America is a center-right country after all. It was just tired of George Bush and the GOP leadership.

Recently we've seen a spate of articles suggesting that the Republican Party is in the worst shape it has been for decades. And it's true that the GOP is not just out of power but way out of power, with powerless minorities in both houses of Congress and no clout at all in the White House. Yet at the same time, there are important undercurrents moving in the GOP's direction.

Maybe the trend won't continue. Maybe Obama will triumph on issue after issue. Maybe Republicans will fall on their faces again. But right now, with Democrats at the height of their power, things are quietly moving toward the GOP -- far sooner than anyone thought.

Byron York, The Examiner's chief political correspondent, can be contacted at byork@washingtonexaminer.com. His column appears on Tuesday and Friday, and his stories and blog posts appears on www.ExaminerPolitics.com.

Note: Some readers have suggested I have my math wrong on the private poll I cited about the stimulus. The numbers, and my reading of them, are correct. To clarify, here are the complete figures from that question on whether the stimulus is working or not working, with the percentage of people who believe the stimulus is working first:

Republicans 12 -- 79
Independents 35 -- 57
Democrats 60 -- 25

Among those who think the stimulus is not working, there is a 22-point gap between independents and Republicans, and a 32-point gap between independents and Democrats. Among those who think the stimulus is working, there is a 23-point gap between independents and Republicans and a 25-point gap between independents and Democrats.

On this question, Independents are closer to Republicans than they are to Democrats.

The critics' mistake is to forget that approve/disapprove numbers rarely add up to 100 percent. There is usually some group of people who don't know or who have no opinion, and that is the case in this poll -- so it is not correct to assume that because 60 percent of Democrats believe the stimulus is working, then 40 believe it is not working.

Thanks for reading.

Truth is folks didn't like it when they felt Cheney was marching to his own agenda and now we have Obama doing much the same but with a focus closer to home. At least much of Cheney's meddling took place far from American soil. Keep screwing with peoples livelihood, tax them silly and the tide will shift rather quickly and dramatically.

According to your own numbers, 40% of democrats don't believe that the stimulus is working, 57% of independents do not believe that it is working, and 79% of republicans do not believe that it is working. I note that 57 - 40 = 17 < 79 - 57 = 22. This does not support your conclusion that that "But among independents, 57 percent said the stimulus is not working -- a number much closer to the Republican than the Democratic position."

Oh, that's right he's not in prison, YET. President Obama is the best thing to happen to this country in over 40 years. The republic_an party is now the party of right wing religious nuts and bigots. As Bill Maher says, not all republic-ans are bigots, but all bigots are republic-ans.

Here's to government healths plans, like the 55 republic-ans in congress chose to have and down with insurance companies and greedy drug companies.

"60 percent of Democrats said the stimulus is working, and 79 percent of Republicans said it's not. But among independents, 57 percent said the stimulus is not working -- a number much closer to the Republican than the Democratic position."

So, 40% of Dems say it isn't, and 79 Republicans say it isn't. Seems to me, 57 is "a number much closer to" 40 than 79.

In Gallup's 2008 interviews, 29 percent of independents described themselves as conservative. This year, 35 percent do.
65% liberal still seems pretty big.

This article is manipulative. A better explanation is that some conservatives were so disgusted with Bush they became independent, and now they are drifting back, not being pushed. In the end, we are mostly moderates who agree on most things, and the sooner we can figure that out the happier we will be. We need to shut down the extremists - way too much power for too few people without popular support.

You do realize that George W Bush started us down this road. Stimulus #1? Those stupid checks? Loaning AIG money? Bailing out banks? Taking them over? This was all started by Georgie. Why doesn't anybody talk about the bank bailout carried out by Bush?!? just a few months before the stimulus. Clearly, the stimulus necessary was much higher (about 2 trillion to see considerable effects).

Let's think people! Wake up. If you think gov't is trying to rob you - you must be blind to the corporations.

Oct 27, 2009

Attention pollsters and the nuts who believe companies like Rasmussen. Next time you do a poll, try to call young males 18-24. You won't get any and you know it. There are so many Americans using cellphones these days and I guarantee you that people do not like it when public opinion pollsters call their cellphones and make the owner of the cellphone pay for the survey time.

Also, in a survey, you should NOT ask people whether they think the stimulus is working yes or no, you really should ask, "Do you think President Obama's stimulus package is working YET? The YET is very important and pollsters are not asking it. Many of us are smart enough to know that you can't expect the stimulus to work overnight. Only right-wingnuts think that way. The rest of us know it'll take time.

Get your facts straight

Oct 27, 2009

"60 percent of Democrats said the stimulus is working, and 79 percent of Republicans said it's not. But among independents, 57 percent said the stimulus is not working -- a number much closer to the Republican than the Democratic position."

Your math is simply wrong. If 57% of independents said it's not working than 43% said it was. That's a 17% difference from the Democratic position and a 22% difference from the Republican position. That would mean that independents are CLOSER to the Democratic position. I really when people who should know better throw around poll numbers in this fashion. They often draw the wrong conclusions and/or rely on polls that can vary widely based on how the questions are phrased

really

Oct 27, 2009

Gee, who did that "private" poll? This is not at all surprising, considering that there is a large segment of the population (and a large part of the Republican leadership) who get their "news" from right-wing talking heads, like Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck.
FACT: Limbaugh flunked out of college after 1 year. He flunked all of his classes.
FACT: Hannity flunked out of not one, but two colleges.
FACT: Beck never even went to college, because he was too much of an alcoholic/drug abuser.
These lack of credentials are never disclosed when the major news media discusses these individuals and their impact on America (probably b/c they're afraid of looking like liberal elitists). So these guys who speak about topics as diverse and complex as medicine to constitutional law are never questioned about what gives them the expertise to even discuss ANYTHING.

I have friends who were messianic in their adoration of the Putz-in-Chief. They are now on the fence. These friends were die-hard LIBERALS. With every letter capitalized. When Obama was elected, they pretty much believed all the hype that he was going to save the world. Even THEY have smelled the stench of communism from this jerk and his Evil Witch of the West and they don't like it. I don't know how things will fare what with voter fraud (thank God ACORN has been largely neutered) and various gerrymandering tricks by Dems in states like California, but Obama is losing people in his base - period. And he is losing independents ever faster. I so can't wait till November 2010. Wish it was tomorrow.

Mr. Slouch:

Maybe independents just don't like extremes. Republicans are too far right and the democrats are too far left. But maybe your right. Maybe it IS time for independents to examine their motivations and finally create a 3d political party to end this stupid 2 party system that just swings back and forth, never accomplishing anything other than dividing americans.

Creating a Muslim technology fund, to help provide jobs to Muslim countries!

It is my firm belief, he wants to reduce our economy by transferring our wealth...and therefore, our dollar will sink further, as he has already told the G20 he was in for the "global currency".

The Dems better pray the Reps don't get themselves a legit presidential contender and a coherent message. If they do, the Dems will REALLY get waxed in 2010 and could lose the White House in 2012. Dick Morris was correct; Obama's biggest weakness is his radical Left congress. They're pulling him waaaay too far to the Left. Best thing that could happen is a repeat of 1994 when the Dems lost congress. Clinton got a lot of really good Centrist legislation passed once he had a Rep congress.

57%

A huge number of independents (57%)have caught on to Obama's "no help for businesses" stimulus plan. That is an astonishing number. No matter how you looney lefties spin it, your party is in total freefall, and you know it. Unemployment has skyrocketed, the national deficit is staggering - 4 times larger than Bush's deficit in 2008, and all you loons can mumble is it's all Bush's fault?

Obama won the popular vote by 9.5 million votes (or 7.3% of the popular vote). The oped's position that there is evidence that there is a shift of independents is more pointed when you consider that the margin of victory for Obama was at these levels and not at FDR levels. In other words, he needed independents to get elected in the first place and can't afford to loose too many and still be re-elected in 2012.

BackwardsBoy

Oct 27, 2009

I'm amazed at the commenters here who think that a doubling of the unemployment rate, a falling dollar, huge deficits and high grocery and energy prices are all good things. These are all results of a move to the political left, which began in 2006 with the Democrats achieving a majority in the House.
We're now two years into America's experiment with "progressivism", commonly known as Marxism to the rest of the world and things don't look so rosy. By any measure, this has been and will continue to be an abject failure. Americans elect our politicians for one reason: to improve our standard of living. Ask yourself if you're better off now than you were two years ago.
I certainly was.

So, Republicans overwhelmingly reject the stimulus plan (by better than a 6 to 1 ratio,) Independents overwhelmingly reject the stimulus plan as well (by nearly a 2 to 1 ratio) while Democrats overwhelmingly accept the stimulus plan as a success (by more than a 2 to 1 ratio) but the liberals in here argue that the Independent position is closer to their own? No wonder the budget is so out of whack. Liberals are crazy-creative where numbers are involved.

Americans despise dictatorship, including the dictation of salaries, bonuses and business methods to financiers, bankers and automakers. In America "the Right" is the memory that the Founding Fathers established this country on the principle of individual rights. The Right cannot win against the Left without a public understanding of the moral foundation of rights, which is to be found in the writings of Ayn Rand, America's moral philosopher.

And we do NOT have a coherent foreign policy with these clowns, they are incompetent and dangerous !!
How can you sit there arguing and name calling when our country is falling apart ! AND IT"S NOT all Bush's fault, it is MOOT anyway whose fault it is, but it's OBVIOUS that this crew are taking us the final yards over the cliff !! I do NOT need a NANNY STATE !

I used to believe I was moderate. But Obama and his minions calling me ignorant, unAmerican, unpatriotic, rightwing and other unappealing rants has radicalized me. I believe most rightwingers were passive moderates a year ago. They are now angry and mobilized.

Isn't it ironic that the election of Obama has galvanized the majority of Americans to speak out against massive spending and the radical left policies that he allows Reid/Pelosi/Dodd/Frank, et al. to pursue. It's time for real change.

Dream? For most of the country this administration is a nightmare. Turns out we didn't want to be Marxist. Who knew? Obama is the best friend the republican party ever had. He is doing to democrats what Nixon did to republicans.

Anyone who thinks America is better off under Obama is either ignorant, misinformed, or just plain stupid. He will go down in history as the biggest mistake this country has ever made.

You are absolutely right. I've listened to you on Dr. Bennet's show and you are a great American.
God Bless America and let's take back Washington!

Common Sense American

Oct 27, 2009

I guess the idiot who wrote this article did not see the ABC poll where only 20% of Americans identify themselves as republicans, which is the lowest since 1983. By comparison, it showed that 33% of people identified themselves as democrats, and 42% identified themselves as independants. If anything, the nation is moving more to the middle, since independents are the largest group, and most of those independents are most likely people who used to call themselves republicans. Whoever wrote this article wants to believe the republicans are getting stronger and America is moving to the right, but nowadays, ignorant people will believe what they are fed, and the author of this article knows it. By the way, that is why Fox News is number 1.

Hey Common Sense American, how about the poll that showed most American's are Conservatives? Sorry to tell you, Obama needs to move to the middle as Clinton did or he is done. Obama is an idiot.

The meteoric rise of American Socialism will only be matched by its meteoric fall. Bush was an absolute idiot and I say that as a Republican! Bush was just another neo-lib global dictator wannabe, and in many many ways was not "conservative" at all. You don't need any polls to read the writing on the wall... it's pretty obvious that Obama's magic sheen has worn off for those still able to think. Come next week, VA will have a new Rep. governor and retake the state legislature, and this will be the beginning of the end of America's flirtation with Communism.

The entire premise of the story is wrong. York says that since so many don't think the stimulus is working then the country is moving to the right. He might as well have posited that since the leaves on trees are changing colors then it is going to rain. He predicts a causal link that is invalid. It is hyperbolic in the extreme to suggest that people are moving to the right based upon whether ther opinion about the stimulus. Makes a great headline--but not good journalism or logical thought.

---just read the right wing nut jobs' comments if you want to know why so many Americans are repulsed by the Republican party. They hate, smear, and are essentially anti-Christian and anti-democracy in their values. Most Americans are saddened and sickened by thier vitriol against our country's values. As a former Republican--now Democrat, I know I am.

Most Americans are saddened and sickened by the anti-American, anti-democratic, pro-violent, hateful values of the Republicans these days. That is why we've moved away from them--they don't share common decency as a fundamental value with the rest of us anymore.

I think most Americans are getting sick of BOTH parties. That part of it is playing out at the moment in NY-23 between Scozzafava and Hoffman. If Hoffman wins, and looks like he might, that would be an horrific uppercut to the DC establishment GOP.

Considering the two parties we have in Washington are really Democrat and Democrat Lite (with a few notable exceptions), I see upheavals coming for both parties. And that would be more than all right with me.

Those that argue the numbers are arguing mere symantics. The real issue is, as is spoken in this article. BO and his leftist colored specs have shed a dim light on our country.

The funny thing is, instead of criticizing the polls and the article, you BO lovers should be criticizing BO because he doesn't seem to mentally grasp the difference between 1 million and 1 trillion dollars. Writing an article is one thing, running a country is quite another. Incompetency is almost worse than evil, and it will destroy us quicker.

To: Really You criticize Beck because he used drugs, when Mr. Obama used pot and cocaine at the very least by his own admission "whenever he could afford it." As far as expertise, what specifically, gives Obama the expertise to make decisions about the future of this country. He's an empty-suit, crooked Chicago lawyer with NO experience in real politics, unless you count "Community organizing" with his convict buddies at ACORN, his White-hating and America-hating "mentor" Mr. Wright, and his terrorist bomber friend Ayres.

If the Republican party would return to traditional conservatism, kick the NEOCONS out of the party, adopt economic and foreign policies based on the best interests of all Americans, rather than the financial interests of the corporate elite and the national security interests of Israel, we might see a GOP sweep of congress and the White House. Americans are afraid they are losing their country, their cultural heritage, and their constitutional freedoms. Many just voted Obama in hopes that the GOP would implode after the loss and have a chance to reinvent itself to serve the real interests of average conservatives as well as moderates.

Immigration control (real, not symbolic), middle class tax relief (not corporate welfare), and jobs creation (not tax cuts for overseas outsourcing) needs to be the core of the GOPs platform or they will continue to fail at the polls.
