On guns and climate, the elites are out of touch

On issues like global warming and gun control, the political elite does not see eye-to-eye with the American public. (Photos by Photos.com)

Many years ago political scientists came up with a theory that elites lead public opinion. And on some issues they clearly do. But on some issues they don’t. Two examples of the latter phenomenon are conspicuous at a time when Barack Obama enjoys the approval of more than 60 percent of Americans and Democrats have won thumping majorities in two elections in a row. One is global warming.

The other is gun control. On both issues, the elites of academe, the media and big business have been solidly on one side for years. But on both, the American public has been moving in the other direction.

Over the last decade, the Gallup organization has been asking Americans whether the seriousness of global warming is generally exaggerated or generally correct. From 1998 to 2007, except for the runup to the 2004 election, they said it was generally serious by roughly a 2-1 margin — 66 to 30 percent in 2006, for example. But in March 2009, that margin slipped to only 57 to 41 percent, with two-thirds of Republicans and nearly half of independents saying concern is exaggerated.

Similarly, last month pollster Scott Rasmussen found that only 34 percent believe that global warming is caused by human activity, while 48 percent said it was caused by long-term planetary trends. That’s almost exactly the opposite of what he found 12 months before — 47 to 34 percent the other way around. However, 48 percent of the group Rasmussen calls the Political Class — in other words, the elite — continues to believe global warming is man-made.

On guns, Gallup has been testing opinion for many years on one extreme proposal that is the goal, usually unstated, of many gun control advocates: banning the possession of handguns. Support was 60 percent in 1960 and 49 percent in 1965. It was as high as 43 percent in the early 1990s, before the Clinton Congress passed the so-called assault weapon ban. In March 2007 it had fallen to 29 percent — a minority, almost a fringe position. In the early 1990s Gallup found that Americans by a 2-1 margin favored stricter gun sale laws over less strict ones or keeping them the same. By fall 2008 they were evenly split.

Some of these shifts in opinion may be responses to events that liberal elites have not deigned to notice. Forty of the 50 states now have concealed weapons laws that allow law-abiding citizens to get permits to carry guns. Gun controllers predicted these would result in traffic shootouts and general mayhem. They haven’t. It turns out that criminals are deterred from attacks less by gun control laws than by the possibility that their intended victims may be armed. As for global warming, many Americans may have noticed that temperatures actually haven’t been rising over the last decade as global warming alarmists predicted. The elites are able to hire armed security guards and jet off on private jets, so they are less likely to notice these things.

I think there’s something else at work here. For liberal elites, belief in gun control and global warming has taken on the character of religious faith. We have sinned (by hoarding guns or driving sport utility vehicles), we must atone (by turning in our guns or recycling), we must repent (by supporting gun control or cap-and-trade schemes). You may notice that the “we” in question is usually the great mass of ordinary American citizens.

The liberal elite is less interested in giving up its luxuries (Al Gore purchases carbon offsets to compensate for his huge mansion and private jet travel) than in changing the lifestyles of the masses who selfishly insist on living in suburbs and keeping guns for recreation or protection. Ordinary Americans are seen not as responsible fellow citizens building stable communities but as greedy masses who must be disciplined to live according to the elite’s religious dogmas.

It should not be completely surprising that, over time, these views have become less congenial to the masses who are the object of such condescension. Democratic officeholders who must live by the discipline of the ballot have noticed. Party leaders did not press to re-enact the assault weapons ban when it expired and are currently flummoxed by their backbenchers who are resisting a cap-and-trade bill that will impose huge costs on those who use electricity. Elites may lead, but Americans do not always follow.

As the "socialists of the XXI century" who are destroying Latin America, Obama is destroying the U.S. Obama does not care what people want. He cares how to better manipulate them and control them. Aware that most people no loger believe in man-made global warming and do not want cap and trade, which would destroy de economy, Obama is looking for better words to manipulate Americans and force them to swallow the scam. He'll also look for ways to take weapons away from us so we are unable to defend ourselves. His goal is to transform the U.S. into a socialist/communist GULAG like Cuba, where he would be in TOTAL control.

Obama is a leader all right. He is leading the USA into areas where no man has gone before. That always upsets many folks. Those changes he campaigned on are coming to pass. Whether the changes will make the USA better or worse is uncertain right now. The elite of course want to keep all their luxuries and perks you mentioned, such as private jets and exorbitantly high incomes. Most Americans deplore this but secretly wish they had those perks and income, so they are naturally jealous. The USA and the world has come down to a new level that is about half what it was in its heyday. Get used to the new world order.

Michael, you're all over this one with bells on.

The government benefits from creating panic. Panic about global warming greases increased regulation and increased taxation. Panic about civilian firearms greases increased control and increased repression.

And the panics are usually unjustified. On your way to work this morning, how many bodies did you pass on the street dead of swine flu? The government can't even get that right, why should we trust anything they have to say about whether or not human activity even affects global warming? They have a vested interest in a "yes" answer, but that doesn't mean we have to be stupid and go along with the con.

I appreciate your stance on this article. It's logical, and it calls out the politicians for being "elitists" and not being at ALL in touch with the American people. I especially appreciate what you state about guns and the law-abiding citizens who do so. Thank you!

Why are there so many Democrats that think citizens are stupid? It has to be that they have a need to control others.
They need to get over themselves, they might have attended a pricy college, but few have the quality of common sense.

Citizen Dave is DEAD WRONG; Obama is not leading us at all, but he is pushing us over the edge towards socialism or total revolution. Many men have already gone down the path Obama wants America to go down; it didn't work for Russia so why would it work for the U.S.A.?

Michael, I agree with you 100%. The "Elite" are completely out of touch with reality!

Fedup, I think the problem is the fact that they did go to those pricey colleges ( many on their parents' dimes) and soaked up all the liberal B. S. which is passing for education these days. Paying for college is not in the same category as being intelligent enough to learn anything worth the cost of tuition.

The old saying that if you tell a lie long enough people will believe it is true in Washington and it seems Obama as well. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth as do those that he has appointed do, it is their agenda that will cause the USA the most problems and we can see it has started.

A very good article, but I think you are wrong on one point. You said,
"the elite — continues to believe global warming is man-made."

I don't believe the elite really believe in man-made global warming anymore than an sane person would, they just try to use the scare tactic to tax, regulate, and dominate the rest of us.

Story

I'm always amazed that people think the second ammendment to the US Constitution is about hunting and/or self defense. It is actually about the citizens of the US being Constitutionally protected to rise up with their arms to overthrow politicians who are or have become hostile to the citizenry and the rights enumerated in the Constitution. That's right.... the founding fathers fore saw a day when ordinary citizens would have to retake their country by use of force and with much blood shed, AND it's perfectly legal! American politicians are not to be Leaders or Rulers. They are servants of The People.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled (remember DC v. Heller) that government cannot impose a total ban on private firearms ownership (although the ruling permits lesser forms of gun control), is it appropriate for any American to fear a total gun ban in their nation's future? Or is it just paranoia?

Remember, it isn't easy to overturn a Supreme Court decision. Just look at the 1962 decision banning public-school prayer and the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Both decisions still stand.

Rights are like muscles. Unused, they atrophy and disappear. Exercised they become toned and strong. It's extremely important that all Americans visibly exercise their rights to Free Speech, Free Press and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Write letters to your government and news papers. Purchase guns and ammunition. Obtain concealed carry licenses. Every step will show clearly to the government that you are exercising you legal rights and that you will not let them disappear easily. The message is growing stronger every day. We will not allow the Federal Government to shred the Constitution without a legal fight.

GOP Elite

May 12, 2009

The reality is that the GOP elites dictate the nonsense they expect rank-and-file Republicans to swallow: e.g. science is wrong. Pollution is good for the economy. More guns means more freedom. Deficits don't matter (when they're run up by Republicans) etc etc etc. Don't make me laugh.

The elites know they cannot do much about guns, that is why they are going after ammunition.
A gun is not much good without ammo.

Right on, Michael. Recommend that all of you read a great book, "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton. It's fiction but he documents his points in non-fiction footnotes.

Great article. Point of semantics: I'd scratch the second "e" in "elites" and add an "ist". "These people"--well, let's name names: Garofolo and all her comrades--are not true elites in that they are not exceptionally anything unless full of themselves. There is a fine line. I for instance am an elite blog commenter. I am also an elite husband, pickup truck driver and a fearsomely elite coffee drinker. (Dare I also mention hunter, fisherman and redneck?) Of course I do not usually call myself an elite (unless to make an elite point) nor do I give others to believe that they are stupid in the blinding light of my elite intellect because I am not an elitist.
