Questions of competence begin to dog Obama

President Barack Obama's fellow Democrats are again in an uproar over health care.

Liberals say they'll blockade any bill that doesn't include a government-run insurance program. And labor says it will sit out the 2010 elections if the president doesn't come across with a stout public plan.

Meanwhile, the moderate Democrats who were wooed for weeks by the administration are sidling toward the door, saying that the best thing would be just to start over.

Many at the White House no doubt wish they could take that advice.

It's been 177 days since Obama made his initial pitch for a health care overhaul to a joint session of Congress. That the president's team is still spending so much time stroking the Democratic base is evidence of how dire the situation is for this young administration.

Two decisions on health care have rattled Democrats.

First, the president chose to not sell his own plan but instead tried to get Congress to rush something through before lawmakers -- and the public -- fully understood what was in the bill. Second, the administration attempted an ungainly flip-flop on the issue of government-run insurance.

Many Democrats think that the stars were aligned for health care but increasingly see the administration as having squandered the moment.

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took a beating Tuesday for an outright evasion on whether Obama has changed his position on the public option. Down the hall, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel snarled to the New York Times that the White House is finally done with bipartisanship ... again.

Democrats can't be blamed for wondering if these guys know what they're doing.

It doesn't help with liberals that Obama is escalating the war in Afghanistan, sticking with Wall Street on bailouts, and going slow on social issues. But Democrats are really alarmed because they have lost faith in the political powers of the president and his team.

Competency trumps ideology almost every time.

Americans would rather have a competent president with whom they disagree on some points than a president who shares all their views but can't get the job done.

For George W. Bush, the tipping point of his presidency was August 30, 2005, when the sun rose on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Fair or not, the perception that Bush was not up to the task in New Orleans fractured public confidence in his administration.

When the brushfire of sectarian conflict in Iraq burned out of control in early 2006, there was little the president could say to reassure Americans. Having taken the rap for letting 1,800 citizens die in a storm, Bush couldn't regain control of the national narrative in Iraq.

As Democrats like Obama hounded and hectored him, voters came to conclude that the president and his party weren't up to the job of running the country.

With tremendous discipline and a top-notch team, Bush was eventually able to regroup and build enough support for the troop surge that pulled Iraq back from the brink in 2008. But big deficits, a Wall Street bailout, and the memories of Iraq and Katrina saw Bush leave office with only about a third of Americans in his corner.

About half of the country still approves of the job Obama is doing. But as voters lose confidence in Obama's gifts, victories will be harder to come by.

The simple answer for breaking the cycle would be to listen to moderate Democrats who say that starting over would be better than a humiliating defeat, or worse, passing a screwed-up bill.

But Obama set the stakes for the game when he allowed Emanuel to convince Democrats and the press this spring that failing to pass a bill immediately would be electoral death next year.

Once the August deadline was blown and the president started dropping in the polls, Obama had no choice but to keep plunging ahead. Plus, his personality makes it unlikely that he'll admit a mistake of this magnitude.

The way Obama brushed off the challenges of both Hillary Clinton and John McCain last year made Democrats believe he had infallible political instincts and was a forceful leader.

But what if Obama was lucky in the adversaries he drew and in the timing of the economic collapse? What if Democrats confused serendipity and ego for keen judgment and executive ability?

Those questions are the reason for the panic you see on the faces of congressional Democrats.

That is not important now. What matters is that he inspires us to elect someone that is competent.

What did you expect? The man has not a day of executive experience. And now, without sufficient vetting, he sits in the toughest executive position in the world.

And now, in a last ditch attempt to gain some support for his failing health care bill, he's calling on religious leaders and clergy to tell their flock that his health care bill is what the Good Lord would want us to support. The guy is truly pathethic - unpresidential and an embarrassment on the national and international stage.

It's really SO interesting the wsy some columnists can work the word "KATRINA" into an article about the incompetence of the Chicago- community-organizer-in-chief, isn't it? The fact is, Obama was, is, and will continue to be an empty suit, (although an extremely dangerous one) no matter how the "MSM" tries to rehabilitate him. 2010 can't come soon enough.

The smooth talking, deliberative and pragmatic Messiah clearly has no leadership skills and he never had but he sounds good. If this health care proposal is so great, why won't our Congress and the Unions go along with the same care they are trying to ram down our throats. The debate would stop right there. The system needs to fixed not scraped. It is truly great theater to see the leadership in this country insult and demean the people they represent and yet have very few answers at the town halls they preside over- well the ones they haven't canceled.

Katrina was more a media than a meteorological event and the greatest errors made by the Bushies were those of excessive profligality with the public purse to "rebuild" that which wasn't there and never shal be.

Much the same can be said of healthcare. The "crisis" is largely manufactured but Barry is hopeless anyhow, on ground not merely of his own choosing but his own creation. There are no bodies piled like cordwood in the streets anymore than there were at the NO dome. The difference is Barack will bring it about by ushering in utter chaos. All this guy has ever done is told discreet groups what they want to here from the moderates to the Commies; they gays, the grannies and the trannies ALL hear the poll-tested verbiage. Now that it is time to do rather than talk it all collides in a heap at the swirling end of the toilet bowl. Enjoy, I am.

"But what if Obama was lucky in the adversaries he drew and in the timing of the economic collapse?" Why doesn't anyone mention that Obama was outspending McCain by 4:1 or more or that the media was do little more than fawning over him rather that looking closely at his experience and record?

Excellent point. If they were happy to go into the same system they demand the rest of us accept there would still be legitimate objections to socialism but they wouldn't have any traction. But being politicians they make sure they have the best and leave the rest for the peasants.

Lets see, the haters are still out there over turning rocks and looking for anything to justify their rasist hidden agenda. The president have been in office not even 8 months in addition to all of the distraction in the world left by the previous administration he is also fighting an entrench congress beholding to special intrest group and large campaign doners. The president of the US do not come with a written unflexable script that must no matter what else happen in the world adhere too. Give the President a break, haters only eight month have past to correct 8 years of entrench mis-management.

Why doesn't the administration use the proper language? Instead of saying "affordable health care for all", he should say "forced health care for all" to help lower costs for those that practice unhealthy life styles. Is President Obama willing to NEVER smoke or drink for the rest of his life to help contribute to prevent health complications? He should start NOW!

Whatever President Obama's small deficiencies might be, they pale to insignificance in comparison with the Bush administration's 8-year reign of error, incompetence, corruption, and venality. Most of the comments above dumping on Obama seem to emanate from the depths of ignorance, misinformation, inanity, and cultivated silliness. Had we put the McCain/Palin ticket in power our country would have really been up a creek without a paddle.

IS IT 2012 yet? Lame duck it is! I'm still shocked that this nation elected a complete incompetent. Obama's incoherence is astounding. You have a vast majority against public-option healthcare, and 55% would prefer no change to the current system and he jumps keeps on trucking!! Your Chicago thugs won't get you through this one.

Chris, I'm curious as to why you wrote an entire article on a group, without ever talking to any of them. I'd be interested in seeing a quote from one of these Democrats who just want to start over, or from one of the people (other than yourself) who are dogging Obama with questions of competence. When you write an entire on an unnamed group of Democrats without interviewing or quoting a single one of them, it looks as though you are either lazy or, worse yet, simply manufacturing a controversy.

There is a tendency amongst Americans to pick Presidential candidates for hollow reasons.

Obama is mildly charismatic. Few are.
Al Gore was a Vice-President once.
George W. Bush was a Bush.
Bob Dole was Bob Dole and how do you argue with that?
Ronald Regan stood in front of a flag and spoke well.

We don't look for cold, calculated, successful CEO's.

Why don't we do that?

Obama is a true case study for Chicago thug politics. Tfhe first order of business for any Chicago politician is to go for the money. Noy did he hit the jackpot with the stimulus bill, the omnibus bill and his budget. Only after he gets his hands on the money does he turn his attention to healthcare. We need to recognize Obama for who he really is..........a Chicago thug that has robbed us blind.

ChicagObama's grand liberal agenda has come crashing back down to reality. Not only are his own supporters questioning whether they made the right decision buying into the media adulation, they are more aware of the bills being debated than their own representatives.

The growing outrage concerning the government takeover of our health care system has struck a nerve with voters, because WE are the ones footing the bills for all this wasteful spending, and getting nothing back in return but empty promises and failed policies.

Here's to real HOPE and CHANGE in 2012!

It's unfortunate that the electorate was influenced by the celebrity of the man (OBAMA). He was unaccomplished legislator. The only credentials/labels for him was being a Socialist and community activist. He had NO experience or leadership skills and now the country is paying for it. He is truly incompetent. Now that he has made history by being the first bi-racial president, he should resign from his position. But then, we'll be stuck with the idiot Biden. This country needs to wake-up before it's too late. We need to change the composition of the House and Senate in 2010.

Most of the criticisms of President Obama above seem to have been coughed up by Rush Limbaugh's dittoheads. Rarely have I seen such spiteful outpourings. Could a lot of it be because Obama is black (I'm white, by the way) and because, unlike Bush, his utterances make sense? Let's give the guy a break. After all, he not only has to lead but he also has to clean up the huge messes left by his predecessor.

This story is effed up.

"Having taken the rap for letting 1,800 citizens die in a storm, Bush couldn't regain control of the national narrative in Iraq."

If the "journalist" wanted to be fair, the story would have read that the media, Democrats and some people in New Orleans tried to put the failure of Ray Nagin and Kathy Blanco onto Pres. Bush.

Is the One incompetent? Does the media carry his water? Does a shark have a watertight bunghole?

Amanda: you say "Rarely have I seen such spiteful outpourings."

I assume you mean the spiteful outpourings--including wishing him dead--that have been and are being spewed by the left about President Bush to this day.

And I'm tired of this "I inherited this" excrement.

The Democrats have been in charge of Congress and thus the purse strings since January 2007. Obama voted for both the TARP and the Stimulus.

And he as quadrupled the deficit to 2,000 billion dollars (that's $2 trillion, but in more recognizable numbers).

Obama's whining like a baby while he spends us to death.

Many of the commenters above seem to have forgotten the damage caused to our country by Bush, Cheney, Rove and Co., the unnecessary war in Iraq, the many thousands of Americans killed and wounded there (not to mention all the Iraqis), the stagnating incomes of most wage-earners, the trampling on the Constitution, the disregard for global warming and environmental problems, the dilution of regulation, the disdain for women's rights, the failure to seriously go after Bin Laden, the lowering of world opinion regarding our country, the lead-up to the recession, the ... oh, well, that's about enough.

Let us REMEMBER the fact that OBAMA PUBLICLY STATED THAT HE WANTED MILITARY PERSONNEL TO PAY FOR THEIR WARTIME INJURIES with themselves, with PRIVATE INSURANCE or whatever method they used for other medical care!!!!
NO ONE CAN CALL OBAMA a COMMANDER -IN-CHEIF!! He ACTUALLY wanted to send men/women off to serve their nation WITHOUT ANY PROMISE OF LONGTERM CARE FOR HEROES!!!!
If that is how he treats HEROES, WE CAN BE CERTAIN OF HOW HE WANTS TO TREAT (medically or any other way) AVERAGE AMERICAN CITIZENS!! HE OPENLY SH*TS IN OUR FACES, while showing respect for ANYONE WHO IS NOT AMERICAN!!
OBAMA IS CLEARLY A RACIST, AGAINST ALL AMERICANS (regardless of skin color)!!!

Many of the commenters above seem to have forgotten the damage caused to our country by Bush, Cheney, Rove and Co., the unnecessary war....

And we hire presidents to fix these things, not whine about them. I don't care about your childish liberal/conservative squabbles. All I know is that I remember the 1970s, and all the things President Obama seems to propose are new bottles for old wine - repackaged versions of the same policies that didn't help back then.

I was better off in 2004 than in 2000, and also better off in 2008 than 2004. Somehow I don't see that happening in 2012 if the government (remember, Congress controls the purse strings) rolls up a $17 trillion debt.

I shudder to think about the economic conditions under which my kids will have to support themselves.

BTW: Anyone who rolls out the silly, apples/oranges 'trillions for war but not medical insurance' trope gets an automatic Internet gonad-punch.

Hey, at least ACORN, Code Pink, the New Black Panther Party, George Soros, and the Socialists are happy with the way this country is heading. Too bad they only account for a fraction of less than 1% of the voters. Are there enough voters in the cemetary, illegal aliens, or felons for ACORN to sign up for the next election? Are we going to scrutinize illegal foreign campaign contributions? Will Nancy get her new planes? Will Barney and Dodd bailout Fannie Mae again? Will Holder call us cowards again? Do I hear buyer's remorse? I have the utmost respect for legal immigrants who come to this country penniless, who sacrafice for their children's education and build their own businesses. We have a president who bows down to the King of Saudi Arabia, apologizes to the muslim world, and turns his back on our true allies. A one termer just like Jimmy Carter. You wish it were that easy. Just trot out the race card. He was NOT vetted by the press, they saw only his color and his performances of scripted speeeches with catchy slogans. So who are the REAL racists? You tell me.

Take his color away and what are you left with??:

Obama is what a 75 year old rancher called a "Post Turtle". As he the rancher explained it - "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'. When you say Raum Emanuel "snarled" at the NY Times re. the WH being done with bipartisan, that is no surprise. His demeanor is to "snarl" and he thinks he can push people around with it! This is NOT CHICAGO! Well, when a Pres. does not attempt to work in a bipartisan way on such a huge issue as 1/6th of our economy, and something that will affect every American, it is clear that he is only Pres. to the Democrats! Well, surprise, Mr. O, there are numerous conservatives out here that are rising to be heard, and you can be sure will be heard in 2010 and 2012. Just wait and see!

Obama spends money recklessly. The value of money has no meaning to him.
There will never be enough money to satisfy him as long as he wants something done; his style is to figure out what he wants done, then figure out how to make the taxpayers cover it.

The only "fresh air" this man is bringing in blows from Chicago, and it has the distinct smell of Chicago style politics. Reward your friends, punish your enemies.

Obama's standard excuse is still to blame Bush for everything that is not as he would like. Bush is history---blaming him is pointless now.

I don't think Obama knows what he is doing with the budget, the economy, foreign policy or military affairs. And I think he has a basic lack of wisdom, balance and understanding of complex situations.

The only thing Obama has shown me thus far is that he knows how to run through enormous amounts of money.

VietVet.....the problem with this administration is mainly that all their "New Foundation" policies are just that.......undermining the U.S. Constitution. You may be jaded because of your war experience, or you may be in need of assistance. I am praying that you get that assistance you need, because we are not going to let our freedoms be taken from us.....if we can do anything to help it from happening. This frantic overthrow of U.S. underpinnings by the racket protection mob is not going to last long if U.S. citizens stand up for Liberty.

Maybe it is time for the records that he spent 1.3 million to seal be opened. Just saying it doesn't seem to make much since to me that people should not be more concerned about him actually being Qualified. Who are we actually subposed to be trusting that he is illegable for the Office of Commander in Chief of the United States of America The people that got him there? Ask more questions. I do not think that the man is incompetent, I thing that he is a socialist and he knows exactly what he is doing. He just thought that Americans were going to roll over and play dead. I cannot believe that the Latin Community in this country support this guy. We have experience firsthand dictatorship, socialized medicine and socialized everything else and it does not work. Let me rephrase that, it works for government and its closest supporters. It amazes me that we Latinos want to bring the same crap (socialism) to this country. We left our countries and came here in search of freedom and better life, but yet, we supporting that, what we ran away from. As the future of this country, we have the responsibility to move this Great Nation forward, not backward. We cannot let this country become a Third World Country. Obama used the Black voters of this nation; Marxism has always spoken of "useful idiots." He is not "one of Us." He is an elitist, a Harvard guy, a prep school guy, and a Marxist guy looking to seize power. He will favor illegals over sixth-generation Black Americans because the illegals are a great new source of Democratic votes.
Why are Black Americans wearing a button showing the Obama family? They are not the Holy Family, you know. Did you know he favors late term abortion and mandatory service, away from home, for all high school graduates? Do you know what the word LEFT means? Rahm Emanuel has dual citizenship in Israel and USA. He is truly a socialist. His brother Dr. Ezekial Emanuel is planning the government takeover of the health businss. I want to point out that the Obama administration has let another public travesty be foisted on the American public. Not only was Obama shaking hands with Myramar Kadfhi at the last economic summit, but his spiritual mentor Rev. Write traveled to be in attendence in Libya when Louis Farahkann
was awarded a life time achievement award from Kadahfi. This Kadahfi is the same leader who commissioned the bombing of the American flight over Lockerbee,Scotland and it is the same man who just negotiated with the British Government to free the actual bomber from his life sentence. Attorney General Holder, ( we are a nation of cowards)said he was disappointed and that he wrote a letter. Well tell that to the families of the 187 dead Americans who were blown out of the sky. Obama has another apology to give and this time it is for his poor judgement in who he is friends with. He can start by making it to the families of the Lockerbee victims.

To those of you who keep referring back to the problems created by the Bush years, it's a sad excuse. Bush has been gone since January 20th and your guy has been in charge since then and to some extent had taken charge prior to that. We are no longer talking about Bush, but Obama who is now the President. All mistakes, problems and challenges now belong to him. That's what you're signing on for when you seek the nation's highest office. Harry Truman was correct when he said the buck stopped with him. Unfortunately out present leaders and their minions either don't know their history or they're living a lie.

I have been concerned about O from the first. He has too little practical experience and has relied too long on his powers of persuasion to reach his goals. When he got to situations where he could not talk his way out of trouble, he didn't have the substance to win arguments. There is little real substance to his thinking. The people he speaks so eloquently of admiring were writers. Within the safety of American academia, a person can opine, forever enclosed in the world of free speech. When he trotted his systems out into reality, his ideas had to undergo the harsh glare of pragmatism. He is crumbling under the pressure. Whether he will come back, I have no idea. His followers are adoring, and it actually hurts him in the open market. We look at the likes of Chris Matthews and think, "You have GOT to be kidding."

The great Bozo, rather than unifying Americans, is doing all he can to divide us. He first uses the race issue, despite being elected the first bi-racial president...now, despite leaving a church run by a racist preacher, goes to DC, and, outside of a couple of photo ops does not attend a church there, but, has the temerity to try to use moral values he has not demonstrated afore, about health care...he is a fraud, an incompetent, a community organizer leading by consensus...not integrity or volition.

Of course he's not competent. As a researcher and a scholar in management theory, we teach that the ideal leader is someone who is a little smarter and better than the average person being led.

Too smart or too clever, and the person may as well be from another planet...it is as though he is too stupid (and maybe he is that).

Obama may well go down as a worse President than Jimmy. Carter was so clever that he was totally flummoxed by the economy and the uneducated Iranian Mullahs. But at least that brought him to a stop.

Obama doesn't seem to know when to quit.

Every activity must pay homage to the environment and labor, with the condescending media media leading the way. It is amazing how people complain about how much Bush spent (Irag, TARP, etc.), and yet not a whimper from about their leadership spending many times more!

It's about power (control) and nothing more.

This is an emotional issue and we all should support covering individuals through private health insurance. Speaking as a person who has lived almost all my adult life without health insurance, YES! I am highly in favor of government assisted health care, but I don't want the government taking over everyone's health care. They've never been fair or balanced in the way they treat people. Look at any U.S. 'system' & see it. Look at the V.A. hospitals. Look at the criminal justice system. What sense of fairness does the government have without the enforcement of the supreme court? I say start from scratch on the public health care idea. I didn't vote for Obama and I won't vote for him in 2012, either.

Perhaps, given the teachable travesty provided by this president, it's also a fact that most Americans would just as soon have an incompetent president who does not lie, obfuscate, and constantly demonize critics while in pursuit of extreme radical agendas destructive of values, traditions, and laws that the vast majority of Americans truly abide, honor, and respect.

The problem with the Democrats ( I have met the Enemy and it is I.) Obamas biggest threat comes from the Democratic Party. No one has ever accused the Democrats of cohesivness. The Repubilcans are really no match for the DEMS., the have the House, the Senate and the White House. But they have no "BALLS". The DEMS need to learn how to play as Hard as the GOP, or all of the POWER they have is going to waste. And of course Obama will get the blame, if he deserves it or not. Democrats need to pull their Heads out of their Behinds, and realize their potential. They remind me of a bunch of GRADE school KIDS.

Aug 26, 2009

Two criticisms of the writer's style: First, show respect to the Office of the President by referring to him as "President Barak Obama"; second, when the word is used for the leader of our government the word is capitalized, "President," not a lower-case "p" but a capital "P." I'm an independent, but the Democrats are handling the situation totally wrong by insulting the public at Town Hall meetings. Jackson Lee answered a phone call on her cell while someone was asking her a question, which is totally rude and ignorant on her part; Frank referred to his Town Hallers as dining room tables ("Talking to you is like talking to a dining room table"). If you'r looking for support, do not be condescending or demeaning to your constituency. All that's accomplished by this tactic is to alienate the public. Remember the government is "of, for, and by the people," not the elected officials.
