Voters scared of Obama’s rushed ‘experiments’

By: Byron York

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele blasted President Barack Obama's plans for the economy and health care in a speech at the National Press Club on Monday. (Seth Wenig/AP file)

With one word Monday, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele helped the GOP get back in the fight over health care and the entire Obama agenda. The word was “experiment.”

“Candidate Obama promised change,” Steele said in a speech at the National Press Club. “President Obama is conducting an experiment.” Steele went on to accuse Barack Obama of carrying out dangerous experiments with the nation’s health care, with the economy, with taxpayers’ dollars.

“Experiment” didn’t come from nowhere. “The term bubbled up from a set of focus groups we did with swing voters, independents, soft Republicans and soft Democrats,” says one strategist involved in an extensive RNC research effort nationwide and in key states like Virginia, Colorado and Florida. “It’s something that a vast majority of voters believe is true, that Obama is running what amounts to an experiment with our future.”

The RNC researchers came away convinced that Americans are scared. Certainly voters expected Obama to do things. But they are frightened by the sheer scope of the president’s proposals, the fiscal dangers they present and, perhaps most of all, the astonishing speed with which the administration is trying to enact such fundamental and far-reaching changes.

“When Americans voted for change, it was for a change from the uncertainty and economic unpredictability at the end of the Bush years,” says Alex Castellanos, the Republican message master who helped shape the RNC campaign. “But the president is giving them economic unpredictability on steroids. There is the clear sense out there that he is moving so fast on so many fronts that his health care plan cannot be well thought out.”

You can see those feelings in the latest Washington Post poll in which just 49 percent of those surveyed approve of Obama’s handling of health care. The numbers were eagerly received by Republican leaders on Capitol Hill. “This is a signature issue for him; it’s something he campaigned on, and it’s something that was inevitable in January,” says one key GOP Senate aide. “And now he has less than 50 percent approval on it and independents are running away.”

The more support peels away, the harder Obama pushes. Up until the weekend, he was demanding the House and Senate pass health care bills before the Aug. 7 recess. It was a schedule with no basis in reality, but only now — after Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, one of the moderates asking Obama to slow down, reminded him that it took Lyndon Johnson a year and a half to pass Medicare — has Obama backed away just a little.

But the public understands that he wants to rush, rush, rush, and voters told the RNC researchers that they were tired of the pressure. “Repeatedly,” the Republican strategist says, “we’d hear, ‘Wait a second. We had to do the stimulus in the dead of night, we had to do cap and trade without anybody reading the bill, we had to move quickly on a multitrillion-dollar budget without any serious public debate, and now we’ve got to get health care done in two weeks?’ ”

Republicans believe there’s a real chance Obama will make his own situation worse by pushing too hard. People have heard this sort of thing before. Anyone who’s bought a car, a TV or an insurance policy knows the feeling when a salesman amps up the pressure to close the deal. You need to buy this today, sign the papers right now, don’t wait another minute. When that happens, the smart customer backs off a little: Why is this guy trying to rush me into this? Behind all the focus groups and the message, that’s the simple version of what is happening now, with Obama in the role of the salesman and the American people as the smart customer.

For a long time, it looked as if Republicans were flattened and hopeless while Obama moved from victory to victory. But now, the sense of energy is palpable. The GOP critique of Obama is sharper, its discipline better, its fundraising up — all just seven months after the party got its clock cleaned in both the presidential and congressional elections.

The result of the Obama experiment might not be nationalized health care, but a re-energized Republican Party.

This is about ideology .Cheap stunts as well as shamlessly exploiting old wounds will not heal them & can only perpetuate distrust .Steele has horse sense ,a commodity in short supply in DC!

And where would all these red-state retirees be without the Social Security and Medicare that Democrat presidents created? Sleeping under a bridge, that's where! Repuglicans rack up mind-boggling deficits and plunge America into expensive wars. Democrats try to sort out the mess, then Repuglicans cry "Oh, they're experimenting." Please take a look at where the prior experiment got us. Halliburton and Blackwater fared quite well, while the majority was left to the likes of Bernie Madoff and unrestrained "irrational exhuberance."

Steele's an idiot! And if I never see him again,i've seen him way too much.

What I dont understand is, if what the current administration is trying to do is so wrong - what are your alternatives? You complain but offer absolutely nothing. Something needs to be done and as bad as health care is now, i'm willing to take any risk.

I read a lot about whats wrong with the Health care proposal but read nothing about what the Repug. would do. Give me your solution Byron.

49 percent of those surveyed approve of Obama’s HANDLING of health care. Does that mean he should be more forceful pushing health care? Misleading.

Wasn't America and Democracy an Experiment? Then he goes on to say he does not get involved in policy and issues.

"President Barack Obama is a good man who cares deeply about this country..."

WRONG. I won't give dime one to the RNC as long as they perpetuate lies like this. Steele is dead wrong.

This is classic leftist statism in action - take a man's money, spend it for him, then take credit for providing it for him. Where would we be without Medicare and Social Security? I would have, at this point, a couple hundred thousand extra dollars in my pocket. You see, Medicare and Social Security aren't funded with a magic money tree, they are funded (underfunded) by TAXING me.

Your comments are unserious and not particularly well considered.

Obama's election was an experiment. Can an unexperienced, but radical leftist with no formal proof of birth or record of academic performance be elected to the Presidency. Answer, yes but the experiment destroyed America.

Jul 21, 2009

The sweeping proposals really are experiments.

For the Democrats, it's crucial to centralize power now while they can. The outcome of the experiments is not important to them. Getting control is what's important.

Funny - if you go on any right-of-center blog this week or this morning, you'll be treated to a host of screeching, sycophantic O-bot commenters who mysteriously sprang up from nowhere as soon as Obama began his "full court press" for his craptastic health care takeover.

Funny how that always seems to happen. Guess the interest group/activist emails went out and the sheep are falling right back in line.

>Wasn't America and Democracy an Experiment?

The alternative was tyranny/monarchy, you dolt. There was no such thing as democracy and self-rule at the time.

Socialism/communism was also an experiment - one for which the body count continues to rise. Some people in power in DC didn't get the memo that it's a FAILED experiment.

We have history education for a reason. History did not start with Bush II and begin again in Jan 2009.

Cripes - did ANY O-bots lecturing everyone else on what's best for them pass history or econ 101?

> what are your alternatives? You complain but offer absolutely nothing.

Read Steele's speech. He lays out several proposals for *reducing the cost* of health care, which is the root of the problem, and none of them require trillions of tax dollars and more government interference.

Jul 21, 2009

Client-9: You are correct that Democrats created the multi-trillion dollar Social Security and Medicare ponzi schemes.

There is no question that Republicans created deficits while they controlled Congress through '06. From 2006 Democrats have the misfortune of breaking all deficit records starting with George Washington through George W. Bush. Unfortunately, Barack Obama hasn't stopped spending, and he has the potential to (OVER)spend $4 trillion this year alone. But please go ahead and complain about "Repuglicans".

If you think Democrats can sort out a mess by spending more money, which, by the way, is already failing (unemployment? WAY higher than predicted and climbing; foreclosures? WAY UP!)

You still refer to Halliburton and Blackwater when you should point fingers at Freddie and Fannie.

By the way, your buddy Bernie Madoff, yeah, he's a Democrat.

"I read a lot about whats wrong with the Health care proposal but read nothing about what the Repug. would do."

You should read more widely. The Republicans have offered alternatives to stimulus, cap & trade, and health care only to be muted and/or ignored by the Pelosi/Reid Congress and the complicit press.

I wish libs that complained about "repugs" not having an alternative realized they are just admitting they never venture outside of the echo chamber and have no idea what the GOP is suggesting.

Liberals just build up strawmen and don't bother debating.

"I read a lot about whats wrong with the Health care proposal but read nothing about what the Repug. would do."

Health Savings Accounts (HSA's) - Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) were created by the Medicare bill signed by President Bush on December 8, 2003 and are designed to help individuals save for future qualified medical and retiree health expenses on a tax-free basis.

Give individuals $3,000 to $5,000 per year to negotiate their healthcare with the doctor of their choice.

It has the potential to cut out most of the government control (which is why Democrats don't support it).

The dems common theme seems to be that we have to do something, they can't possibly make it worse. That's obviously not true. You guys should learn to shut up about Bush deficits. Obama spends more in three months than Bush did in an entire year. You can never again demagogue about deficits. Has taken over private industry and has his sights set on taking control of energy and health care, giving him control over most of the economy. He thinks he was elected emperor. There are still some people who understand our traditions and want to remain free. We are not going to sit down and shut up while an absolute phony piece of $hit dismantles the country.

My health care is great. I work hard for it and we're "lower middle class". Where's Obama's promise to help me? The only thing "wrong" with healthcare is that people don't know how to manage their finances - or they are illegal and use the ER as a primary care physician (never to be seen again).

"The RNC researchers came away convinced that Americans are scared."

I understand the need for research to be done, but I think if the GOP would focus on the principles of life, liberty, and personal property, they would be doing much better. Who can articulate the message of freedom? I am getting sick of people pushing prosperity. Don't you know that prosperity is a result of Freedom, not the other way around? They have the cart before the horse. The last time a say a cart in front of the horse it was leading it down a steep decline, somewhat reminiscent of today.

Even more what the Republicans have proposed and the Democrats have rebuffed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHbwdZXeUFo

You Obama fans might want to consider something else: He has REPEATEDLY complained plaintively that he is all for hearing alternatives but no one proposes them, that the Republicans are just "the Party of No." There is no way he could not know of these proposals unless he is so negligent or arrogant that he simply refuses to keep in touch with what Congress is doing.

So how do you Obama fans feel knowing that your President goes around the country making the claim that the opposition party has no proposals of their own, IOW, is lying repeatedly? That OK with you?

Mr. Obama is following in the footsteps of his heros - Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. So far, he has siezed power over 40 percent of the American economy with no struggle at all. Health care is the first resistance he has encountered and how he handles it will depend on which hero he emulates. If Chavez, he will jawbone, jawbone, jawbone and then just reach out and grab the power through nationalization by novel methods (see auto industry bankruptcy). If Castro, opponents will be going to jail.

Jul 21, 2009

Under socialized health care, the government can send you home to die and there is nothing you can do about it. You can't sue, you can't seek private treatment that you pay for yourself because it is illegal. You do not have the right to try to save your own life. That is unAmerican.

The reason health care is so expensive these days is too much government control, giving our power to the AMA and the pharmaceutical companies. Return the power to the individual, and competition will bring prices down and service up, as it always does.

For those who point to social security as a good thing: it is BANKRUPT and many who paid into it for years will get nothing back.

student1776

Jul 21, 2009

Bernard Madoff got sentenced to decades of prison for his $50B Ponzi scheme but the Democrats treat their $20T Ponzi scheme, social security, like a badge of honor. In both cases money from current investors is taken with promises it will be invested for the future then instead it is paid out to current recipients while the assets are completely unbacked IOUs and a bankrupt system. When Client-9 asks where the people would be without SSI, the answer is that investing the same money in an annuity or diversified bonds or in common stocks over the same period would have produced 5-7 times more retirement income (and that is not taking into account survival risk).

How about 2 simple requirements (which cannot be changed) to any universal health care plan.

1. It is the one and only option for all current and retired federal employees.

2. It is totally funded by the users.

If the politicians are truly honest then they should require this
