The Escalating War Between Obama and Bush

By: Byron York

Former White House adviser Karl Rove's bare-knuckled response to recent statements by Vice President Joe Biden has brought into public view a growing resentment on the part of Bush administration veterans over what they regard as repeated and unwarranted slams from the Obama White House.

The current president and his team are being "gratuitous, slightly petty, and slightly obsessive in blaming Bush for things," one former White House adviser told me.

"Completely gratuitous," said another.

"Unfair," said a third.

The hard feelings surfaced after an April 7 interview on CNN in which Biden recounted a visit with George W. Bush. "I remember President Bush saying to me one time in the Oval Office…he said, 'Well, Joe, I'm a leader.'" Biden recalled. "And I said, 'Mr. President, turn around and look behind you. No one's following.'"

A few days later, Rove accused Biden of lying. "It didn't happen," Rove said on Fox News. "He's making these things up out of whole cloth…It is a habit he ought to drop….You should not exaggerate and lie like this when you are the vice president of the United States."

Rove said he had checked with fellow Bushies like former chief of staff Andrew Card and former congressional liaison Candida Wolff, who did not remember anything like Biden's story. What was left unsaid was that while former top White House officials denied it, there was little doubt that the former top White House official, George W. Bush, denied it, too. Rove and the former president stay in touch; it would be very, very surprising for Rove to say something so definitive about Biden without checking with the best possible source for the story, Bush himself.

But the former president has vowed to stay out of the public debate on the Obama administration. "I'm not going to spend my time criticizing him," Bush said during a recent speech in Canada. "There are plenty of critics in the arena. He deserves my silence."

As for the rest of the Bush White House, former aides say the new administration has gone overboard blaming its predecessor. On Obama's recent overseas trip, they were angered by Obama's statement that the United States has "shown arrogance" and been "dismissive, even derisive." No one had any doubt he was referring to Bush. They were irritated when Obama said, incorrectly, that "George Bush didn't believe in climate change." And they bristled when Obama said that Bush's decisions had "lowered our standing in the world."

The irritation extends to the most minor things, as when the Obama White House announced that for the first time ever, the annual Easter Egg Roll would be webcast live on the White House website. "Not true," a Bush veteran told me; the Bushies did it years ago.

When I mentioned the bad blood to a former Bush aide -- the one who accused Team Obama of being "gratuitous, slightly petty, and slightly obsessive" -- I got a long and impassioned speech. "It's becoming tiresome," the former official said. "A surprising lack of grace on his part…a surprising degree of whining and finger-pointing…it's not unusual for a president of another party to lay some blame and responsibility on a previous administration, but he's overdoing it…the word 'inherited' has replaced 'hope' and 'change' in the Obama lexicon…if he didn't want to inherit challenges, then he should reflect on the nature of the office."

For their part, Obama defenders say it’s the Bushies who are throwing stones. They point to an interview in which former Vice President Dick Cheney was asked whether Obama policies like closing Guantanamo and CIA detention facilities have "made Americans less safe." "I do," Cheney answered. "He is making some choices that, in my mind, will, in fact, raise the risk to the American people of another attack."

Cheney's words outraged Team Obama. But the Bush sources I spoke to not only supported Cheney but wondered what the fuss was about. Didn't Obama and other Democrats spend years accusing Bush, the sitting president, of making America less safe? (Indeed they did; you can look it up.)

With Obama in the White House, there's been a decision to continue the blame-Bush theme, even during the president's overseas travels. Now, Bush veterans, led by Rove, are pushing back. If there is no cease-fire agreement soon, things will undoubtedly get much rougher.

It's getting pretty tiresome listening to the bashing of our former classy president. I'm very proud of President Bush of the way he is observing the tradition of an outgoing president not criticizing the sitting president. I guess nobody informed President barack when he came to the WH. However, the liberals spent eight years bashing nearly every breath GWB took. I imagine they can't stop as it's ingrained into their DNA. Thank you President Bush and Mrs. Bush for showing what dignified class means.

The problem with your premise is that the vast majority of the American people agree with Obama. In fact, the vast majority of the public not only wants this so-called ungraciousness in blaming Bush to continue, they also want criminal investigations and prosecutions against the Bush Administration. So I wouldn't push this too far, Mr. York.

It is becoming more and more obvious that the elected Obama is not the same person as the candidate Obama. The candidate Obama made it look like petty politics would be thing of the past if he won. The President Obama has taken petty politics to a whole new level. He has brought Chicago politics to the White House. This is sad. I am disappointed.

It's hard to say how Obama's ceaseless sandbagging of an off-camera Bush is going over with the public since the media don't report anything of value about Obama, but it will look small and petty indeed in the history books. Can't take those speeches and interviews back, and it will look, and in fact is an ugly stain on his character and judgment. That he does it himself, rather than have others do it for him is what is most unsettling - he must either really believe it, or think it is going to work - both sad commentaries. Few emotions about political fights survive the generation who lived them. But pettiness and lack of character last forever in the history books. Obama should come out with a new rhetorical device before this one becomes an albatross around his neck.

"vast majority of the American people agree with Obama" Really ? He won with a 5% majority, hardly vast. As Ificar comments, the real Obama is showing little of Candidate Obama, more of the Chicago political sewer whence he emerged.

Apr 14, 2009

Vast majority? I love the mob rule mentality. 5% is not a vast majority and that 5% has been dropping steadily since president Obama was sworn in (the second time without cameras). Since when did the mob rule mentality decide the principles of this nation. The "vast" majority of Americans did not want to fight the civil war yet more of us died in that war than any other. And speaking of the 1860's, if Obama idolizes Lincoln so much, why doesn't he start acting like Abe. I don't remember any speeches in which Lincoln ingratiated himself to the crowned heads of Europe by telling them he had inherited all his problems from President Buchanan. Lincoln had class, courage and wisdom. Obama has press secretary Gibbs.

The saying "He can dish it out but he can't take it" applies here. Obama has the thinnest skin of anyone on the planet! He reminds me of the cowardly bully in elementary school. He takes potshots at President Bush and then runs for cover and then denies doing it. Childish, and disgraceful behavior for the so-called "Leader of the Free World".

I'm glad to see Bush administration officials fighting back. They'll need to do this every day the Obamas are in the White House, because Barack won't stop whining and blaming others for how "hard" his job is. It's so frustrating that so many Americans could get hoodwinked by this little man-child.

What can you expect from a man who gave H. Clinton and McCain the finger while giving them praise after winning the Dem primary and the election. Lets not forget how Bill Clinton went after Bush Sr. when he was president, only to continue to go after Bush Jr. The Dems have no class, and they never will.

It is starting to get really old and tiresome. This blame-shifting tactic is just old. My 4 years doesn't behave this badly, as her parents have higher expectations of her. As we should demand and expect of our elected leaders. I respect the fact the Mr. Bush is keeping the tradition of not speaking out. I respect the fact the former Bush staff are speaking out on the flat out dishonest remarks. Let it go already. This is distasteful and unbecoming of the office and any level of leadership.

The point on the webcasting of the Easter Egg Roll is that the Obama people feel compelled to lie about even such a thing. If you compare websites, the Bush WH website was far superior in content (vast and in-depth) and format. Check out the Obama WH website on Presidential Pets...sparse and no mention of the famous Barney. Petty of me to mention? No, petty of them to exclude.

What's the big surprise. So far Obama has done nothing but read from a teleprompter and blame bush, people who go to church or believe in less government for what's wrong with anything. He disappears for every crisis and I have to believe he is the total politician as he seems to have no actual interest in what is best for the country and certainly no core values.

Obama is as inept and inexperienced as any community organizer would be running for potus. The man left no paper trail; in his 143 days in the senate he voted present instead of taking a yes or no stand on any issue. He's got no moral compass. He and his wife have shown nothing but contempt for our country, so why would any of this be surprising? It's all about steamrolling this nation into oblivion - which, I might add, is the only thing he's doing pretty well.

He thought that he could stay classy and should be doing his job protecting the U.S.A. instead. *** I felt he should have "called them out" on a weekly radio / T.V. address on their more stupid attacks. *** The Left Wing Media (not MSM) is flying excellent "air cover" against Bush and in support of President Obama (PBUH). I don't remember any Chris Matthews LEG TINGLE EVENTS in favor of Bush. *** Our economy and future security are in Obama's hands. I thought this was going to be the change presidency? It seems to me that Obama is trying to have it all his way. He won with 52% of the vote. That means that half this country did not vote for him. That means that he can continue to govern like a partisan hack and erode that 52% or he can do what Ronaldus Magnus did: After 6 pm, we are all Americans. Reagan had huge battles with Tip O'Neill. And yet they were able to put aside their fierce political beliefs to share a drink and an Irish song. That is what we need in this country, a return to respecting opposing points of view. Instead all we have is personal grudges and vitriol.

You apparently know very little about the "vast majority of the American public," Mary, Mary quite contrary. Joe Biden has a long history of self-aggrandizing lies and Barack Obama is well-schooled in thug political tactics. The president, thin-skinned and dedicated to the preservation of his image, is no doubt sensitive to the fact that said image is unsupported by tangibles. His successes will be credited to his brilliance and his failures sluffed off on others (and who better than George Bush). No way could Obama's ego withstand the kind of abuse President Bush took year in and year out without complaint. Class always tells.

Great artcle Mr. York. Thank goodness Mr. Rove called Biden out on this exaggeration. I'm disgusted with the crudeness of Obama and his Administration blaming Presient Bush for everything. You know what? President Bush isn't in the WH anymore--they'd better bet a grip on this fairytale they're spinning because people are tired of it. Their Bush-bashing comes in handy. It keeps them from having to answer important questions or give explanations. They could tell us why military veterans are now considered a right-wing extremist threat. They could tell us where the TARP money went and what it is being used for. They could tell us why Pres. Obama was half kneeling when he "bowed" before the Saudi prince (highcarbnews.com). They'd rather tell us why they hate Bush.

As a Brit I felt that Obama's series of slights and innuendoes on his recent foreign trip concerning Bush was what we in the UK call catty and bitchiness and downright ungratefulness. Obama lost quite a lot of respect when he displayed a definite antipathy to the country which has given him the privilege and responsibility to be its representative. After condemning America for its arrogance, he then turned around and arrogantly tried to tell us what to do about Turkey. Kind of like the UK telling the US how to treat Mexico.

President "Hope-N-Change' is following the standard Liberal Democrat Presidential Blueprint set by Carter and Clinton, both of who have traveled abroad and talked negatively about both former/current GOP Presidents and their own coutry. Unlike Obama, though, at least those FORMER Presidents had the descency to wait until they were out of office to do so. I am personally thankful he continues the sophmore-ish verbal attacks against American citizens, like Limbaugh and now Former President Bush, instead of continuing to talk about the economy. every time he talks about the economy it takes another plunge! In after-thought, instead of 'Hope-N-Change' he should have used 'point-fingers-N-Whine'!

I do not usually comment on these things but it looks like : has his/her head in a bag. W has so much more class than Clinton, Gore, Obama, Carvell and all of the dumbocrats.

Obama and his admin need to learn basic professional manners. To continue to bash my former President Bush for which I remain proud of.. is sickening. Obama is not good for America. Never will be. He needs to fire his ACORN cronies and stop the conservative bashing. The majority of Americans DISLIKE Obama.

I respect former President Bush for his diplomacy; however, when he announces that he is going to be 'above it all' he is opening himself up for all kinds of criticism from the new President.

This is an example of the class of the Bush family. Bush's father knew when his time was up as president, and stepped out of the national spotlight. Clinton, on the other hand, bashed the previosu two administrations every chance he got... as of this date, Clinton has yet to step out of the national spotlight. George W Bush NEVER criticized the Clinton administration, ever, yet there was plenty he could have! It's like an unspoken agreement among the presidents, to never go after their successors...... that ended with the low class Clinton, and even worse, with NO-CLASS Obama. What a shame. What an embarrassment for our country.

POSTED Apr 14, 2009 Valerie: "Zero is a disgrace to America-Presidents are NOT supposed to score points off of the last administration. Next thing we know, he'll be apologizing for our existance." ========= FUNNY!! Despite all the efforts by the GOP to make Clinton look bad and W look good... W left America an utter mess and Clinton didn't!

this is to be expected. like krauthammer said, obama is used to being the center of attention - he was a half-black boy in a predominantly white middle class family; he grew up thinking his s&^$ didn't stink; we still have no knowledge of what his grades were like both during his undergrad and grad school years; we do know he can read very well. when he speaks off-the-cuff 'like special olympics or something', he shows himself to be totally classless - that's his normal thought process. he's better than everyone else. that he's saying this stuff during formal, scripted speeches and meaning it, shows just how dumb this new president is.

Pivot, pivot and more pivot....they're doing the very same thing that has been done for years...not unlike a Somali pirate say, that's upset the U.S. had the gall to defend itself by popping a few melons, how dare we!!! This is the evolving or should I say alternating reality so emphasized by the Left. I do wish the Admin would grow up and start taking responsibility for its actions and words....the presidential campaign was long enough as it is without a term of campaigning...

It is too bad, no, more like pathetic that the new administrations only able response to the entire spectrum of topics engaged has been "it's GW's fault!" Oh well, we normal, civil people (the one's your bloated learjets pass over 24/7) do not play that way. It seems that the left forgets that they were hideous creatures, uncivil and profane over the last eight years. Perhaps they will no longer care as they are working at the potato farms for Dear Leader...

Biden's swears he said that "no was following" ex-Pres.Bush. But 48% of the vote went to Republicans in last election, proving Bush's ideals and policies were being upheld. Bidens' a liar and a Doofus.

Moxo - Do you realize that CONGRESS was controlled by Republicans for the majority of the Clinton years? Do you realize that DEMOCRATS controlled congress for the final 2 years of the Bush term? Do you also FAIL TO UNDERSTAND what our economy was doing until oh, around 2007??? Get reading, punk, so you can understand what makes an economy roll or shudder. Most lefties can't even grasp the facts that Congress makes laws NOT A PREZ!! He can only sign a law, not write it. Dorks.

President Bush is too classy to respond to petty jabs by this President or any member of his administration. He will go down in History as a President who did what he thought was best for our country. He was not a "yes" man, nor did he care about being popular or how he was rating in the polls. He was a good President, a class act, as was Mrs. Bush. I like Obama, the man, but I do not like where he is taking America. I think he is a radical and I don't trust him.

I have generally found that there are two reasons for continually blaming someone else. Because you're covering your own rear end and/or because you have NO CLUE what to do with the situation at hand.

It would amaze me that Rove of all people calling someone a liar" he and Cheny are masters when it comes to lies, we would never be in this finical mess, if we had never gone to war under false guidance by our leaders at that time. Rove and Cheny have some balls to say we are less safe with Obama the guys who ok'd torcher? and the guys who had no other country being able to truth us after they got in office? remember folks Clinton left with a surplus, Bush rather Cheny put the middle class and the poor in a hole, while their rich friends got richer" if Cheny and Rove would let our president do the job we the Americans voted him to do. All the gop and republicans are doing right is still dividing the country. You would think if they really cared about their country instead of their own special intrest. Americans do not need nagative energy, we need to help Obama's get out of this mess Rove and Cheny put us in.Of course they will never take responsibilty for their actions.

I am so sick of Obama blaming Pres. Bush and the US of being arrogant, Obama is arrogant. I would have preferred a third term of Bush/Cheney to Obama/Biden. He is embarassing the United States all around the world with the return of the Churchill Bust, the IPod to the Queen, The Bow to the Saudi King and the DVDs to Gordon Brown. Can someone teach them protocol? I am proud to have voted and supported President Bush, he has more class in one finger than Obama has in his cabinet and staff.

I didn't vote for Mr. Bush, but I am sick to death of Pres. Obama passing the blame buck to everyone but himself! What happened to the "responsibility" President that he promised to be? He wants to pass the responsibility to everyone but HIMSELF! The buck stops with YOU, Mr. President! Take responsibility for you spending and your deficits!

Obama's great achievement in this Presidency will be that he has made this country weaker and burdened us with multi-generational amounts of debt. It is ironic to hear him whine about the deficit he "inherited" despite the fact that he has quadrupled the deficit in 4 months. This would be like saying, my kids maxed out my credit card, I am going to solve the problem by maxing out 3 additional credit cards. Sure makes sense to me.

The Obama administraion has only to blame the former administration for everything which is perceived as bad...in that way they elevate themselves to a higher standing....typical for the type of people they are...liars and cheats. As far a Biden is concerned, he really is nothing but a side show freak...he makes Obama look smart...Biden is a hack looking for a two bit circus in which to perform his silly, half baked tricks.

It is delightful to see Bush people fighting bacK. oBAMA'S ENTIRE GROUP IS INEXPERIENCED,INEPT,LACKS HISTORY&GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO CONSTRUCTIVELY WORK WITH PEOPLE. OBAMA OWES TOO MANY PEOPLE. HE IS TRULY A NARCISSTIC SAD CASE.

The "vast majority" of America do NOT agree with Obama. Indeed, almost half voted against him. Half of America do not want "criminal" investigations against the Bush admnistration. Par for the course, that Liberals are so free with their faulty assertions.

Obama is not my President

Apr 14, 2009

I see Obama for what he is, an uncouth Chicago thug with the manners of a maffia man what else would you expect from someone like him that votes for infanticide and marxism. He is also very close to a Hugo Chavez, a real pig.

Chris

To Mary 3rd post listed....let us be careful how liberaly we use the term "vast majority." 1. It is not true 2. If the Democratic party starts operating from the false premise that they represent the "vast majority" of America they will burn their political capital...rapido!

Right on OLC! I'm so tired of liberals acting so 'better than thou'. Almost 8 years of unbelievable prosperity (try living in the Third World) brought down by liberal media and the dems constant drum beat of the bad, horrible economy during the election and even after the inauguration. Ever heard of 'self-fulfilling prophecy'? I fear for our country.

Obama and his staff are being poor team players and like you say he has exchange hope and change, for what he intherited. If he didnt want to be president he shouldnt have run for the office and he needs to quit acting so juvenile and petty. HIs whole staff acts like they are emotionally stunted int the 70's-80s. If obamamanians cant stand the heat, they should stay out of the kitchen. At least bush is showing his statesman ship by not lowering himself to the obamamanians standards and not commenting on remarks made by them. Too bad they cant be as civil and gracious but guess it just isnt in their blood. And they think they are intelligent, but they sure arent displaying it , if they indeed, are.

The vast majority of Americans DO blame Bush for most of the troubles we find ourselves in, and don't mind being reminded of that fact. Whether it was Obama or McCain in the WH right now, they would be repeatedly throwing Bush under the bus, and rightly so. Rove's a corrupt, criminal whiner - who cares what he has to say?

The bashing of PRESIDENT BUSH, just shows the control Soros has on PRESIDENT OBAMA,move on, could never defeat Bush in the ballot box, so he continues to try other venues.
