The convenient fantasies of President Obama

By: Michael Barone
Senior Political Analyst
September 9, 2009

President Barack Obama gestures during his interview with The Associated Press, Thursday, July 2, 2009, in the West Wing of the White House in Washington. (ASSOCIATED PRESS)

The resignation over the Labor Day weekend of White House "green jobs" czar Van Jones tells you some interesting things about the Obama administration. One of them is that a man who proclaimed himself a "communist" in the 1990s and signed 9/11 "truther" petitions suggesting Bush administration complicity in the Sept. 11 attacks was considered fit for a White House appointment. Liberal columnists have been attacking Republicans because some of their voters are "birthers," believers in the absurd charge that President Obama was not born in Hawaii and thus is not a natural-born U.S. citizen. But they have failed to identify any "birther" who occupied a position in the Republican firmament comparable to that of "truther" Van Jones in the Obama administration.

Another interesting thing about Jones is that the administration seems enamored of his "green jobs" concept. There's an understandable political reason. Legislation to restrict carbon emissions that is supported by the administration would undoubtedly kill a large number of jobs by increasing the cost of energy, and so you can see why its advocates might want to argue that there will be a compensating number of "green jobs" created -- at least if the government spends a lot of money on them.

But this sounds like fantasy. If there were money to be made in green jobs, private investors would be creating them already. In fact big corporations like General Electric are scrambling to position themselves as green companies, gaming legislation and regulations so they can make profits by doing so. Big business is ready to create green jobs -- if government subsidizes them. But the idea that green jobs will replace all the lost carbon-emitting jobs is magical thinking.

Obama's approach to health care legislation, unless he makes a major course correction in his speech to the joint session of Congress tonight, is of a piece with his hiring of Van Jones. By ceding the task of writing legislation to congressional Democratic leaders and committee chairmen, he has been following a "no enemies to the left" strategy.

By refusing to rule out the government option -- which its architects see as the road to a single-payer government insurance system -- Obama has prevented the emergence of a set of policies that have a chance of passing the Senate. The Senate Republicans in the "gang of six" who have been negotiating with Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus are not going to agree on a bill without assurance from the White House that they won't get rolled by hard-left House Democrats in conference committee.

Yesterday Baucus came out with his own plan, which includes a tax on high-value health insurance policies. But this is likely to be rejected by the Left, by labor unions that have negotiated such benefits from employers, and by members of Congress from states like New York, where, because of state policies, almost all health insurance costs that much.

There is an element of convenient fantasy as well in Obama's health care statements to date. We are going to save money by spending money. We are going to solve our fiscal problems with a program that will increase the national debt by $1,000,000,000,000 over a decade. We are going to guarantee you can keep your current insurance with a bill that encourages your employer to stop offering it.

The list goes on. We are going to improve health care for seniors by cutting $500,000,000,000 from Medicare. We aren't going to insure illegal aliens, except that we won't have any verification provisions to see that they can't apply and get benefits.

Most politicians like to promise voters all good things at once. Democrats got in the habit of doing this over the past 14 years when they could not pass legislation by themselves. Van Jones' moment in the White House is over. Exposure of his record in conservative media made him politically unacceptable, even though mainstream outlets like the New York Times ignored the issue entirely.

The Democrats' health insurance bills remain under consideration, and with large majorities in both houses, passage of some bill cannot be ruled out. But August town hall meetings and national polls have put the Democrats on the defensive. No-enemies-to-the-left and convenient fantasies may work in Chicago. They don't work so well when your constituency is the whole United States.

Mr. Barone: Where are the facts to back your assertions? Any specific video(s), writings, etc where Van Jones states he's a "communist?" Where is your emperical data showing how "green jobs" will "kill" jobs? If you have any specific data to back up your essay please put them in your article.

Callawar: Google or go to You Tube and search for Va Jones. You will see, in his own words, all the proof you need. This radical did himself in with his own words. Why depend on someone else to do the research, do it yourself.

callawar,

There is a neat web site called Google. When you get there you can type in words, names, and issues and get answers to the questions you asked.

The fact that this guy is now out of the administration shows that Mr. Barone is just stating what is reality. Whether you believe him or not is your problem. Obviously, Mr. Jones was thrown under the bus by the current administration because of the need to protect the more important radicals (the President), than the small fish. Please don't insult our intelligence by trying to say Mr. Barone is blowing smoke in his op-ed.

My brother in law is a geological engineer in Wyoming. Two of his natural gas wells have been closed down for 6 months a year for the mating of the grouse. The EPA is being used as a tool to shut down our existng energy sources to make Green energy seem needed. We all agree that the US should be more responsible for it's energy but they are using the environment, animal protection and global w arming to go down the road of Green energy.
I manufacture products for energy efficient housing. we looked at solar for 1200 SF houses. It will cost almost $14K per house to put a solar panel that will only drive the lights, frig and TV and small appliances which on our houses will save about $20 per month. Not much of a return!

Callawar and others... there is data, to support the position that 'green' jobs cost 'real' jobs - as experienced by Spain:

and I quote:
"....Each "green" megawatt installed destroys 5.28 jobs on average elsewhere in the economy: 8.99 by photovoltaics, 4.27 by wind energy, 5.05 by mini-hydro..."

"....The study calculates that the programs creating those jobs also resulted in the destruction of nearly 110,500 jobs elsewhere in the economy, or 2.2 jobs destroyed for every "green job" created..."

Read it yourself... government sponsored creation of 'green' energy is a loser. It will hurt America.

Callawar and like company are suffering from a lack of oxygen to the brain; they need to get their head out of their butt and come up for some fresh air so they can think clearly. There was once a TV program called Fantasy Island where people got their dream wishes fulfilled; we have a Marxist president on his Fantasy Island (the WH) seeking to fulfill his dreams and in doing so he is destroying America. Wake up America and say a resounding NO by voting this bunch of out of office.

With all due respect to Mr. Barone, the President should not be in the business of writing legislation, that is the Constitutional responsibility of the Congress. (A responsibility they too reject by the way.) Anyhow, I understand the need for the president to help shape a "vision" but the media, and the NEA, are largely responsible for the dumbing down of society - people like "callawar" are a great example.

It would be hard to add to the posts questioning Callawar's assertions. Calling him an idiot is an insult to idiots. Move On is the most dangerous outfit lead by the most dangerous man in America. Soros and his cronies made billions in September and October of 2008 by bringing our economy to its knees, with the biproduct of cutting McCain off and getting the Obamster elected. He is now trying the bring the Dollar down while Obama and his cronies are bringing down Capitalism with the same stroke. By nationalizing our economy and creating hyperinflation by printing money, it is all part of a plan, led by their puppet, Bamster.
Instead of worrying about his birth certificate, we need to pull back the curtain asap, before the ex-Nazi Soros, Podesta, and Rhom Emmanuel destroy what is left of our country.

Guys like Callawar try to put the onus on you to explain why they should not regulate away current jobs in favor of alleged jobs that do not exist now, and could not exist absent regulations and likely subsidization.

Imagine that. You must defend reality againt the hypothetical, and the burden of proof is on reality to show it is better than the Sugar Candy Mountain Callawar promises. Unbelievable.

As usual, Michael, you crystallize the nation's zeitgest in a few cogent paragraphs.
When someone tells you you can keep what you have (and the bill itself says you can't) or that you won't be forced to accept the government plan (when the bill itself states you will be fined by the IRS AND forced to enroll come April), I have to believe that the emperor is either lying to me, simply un-familiar with the bill he's trying to cram down our throats, or has a secret agenda of more government intrusion, higher taxes, and euthenasia.
Or all three at once.

Yes its a painful realization when some of you who voted for change discern that the emperor really has no clothes. And he wants to take yours too!

Barone is right on as usual. A policy of "no enemies to the left" is going to create a lot of animosity among moderates and conservatives. I'm convinced that the power has gone to their heads. They seem to want to rule instead of govern and the really sad part about it is I'm certain that they don't know the difference between the two. Callawar is a shining example of what is wrong with this country, and why we are doomed. We live in an age where the Internet lets you find out all information about anything, yet people are still totally clueless because they get their "news" from DNC talking channels and Entertainment Tonight. That is why we still have these brain-dead dolts who think Canada and the UK have great health systems, despite their papers being full of horror stories of waiting lists, denied coverage, and legislated death every day.

The utter laziness and ignorance of our population is spelling the end of the United States.

Great article! And for 'green jobs' proof, just look at T.Boone Pickens plans for a massive wind farm in Texas that have been scaled way down - he found out it wasn't going to be cost effective to build it for the amount of electricity it could deliver.

Here's an example of 'green' costs hitting the pocket book... Our local utility company got the utilities commission and state to allow for a rate hike to compensate for the lost revenue from their 'green usage initiatives!' We lower the usage so our costs go down but the utility needs the revenue and so they go out and increase the rates to go 'green.' Unbelievable! Imagine what happens when Doctors ask for the money they deserve, cost neutral right???

Callawar: Lets think about this. They want to tax all other energy sources (Cap and Trade) to supply money to green energy sources. What does that tell you. If these energy sources were cheaper, they would not have to subsidize the. If energy costs more, it will cost jobs or prices have to go up. Either way, it is not good for the middle class.

There was a report out of Spain concerning "green jobs." If I remember correctly, it stated that for every "green job" created it destroyed 1.5-2 other jobs. Thus resulting in a net loss of jobs. If it was financially feasible then someone would be making money without any government help.

Here's the link for the study.

http://www.juandemariana.org/pdf/090327-employment-public-aid-renewable.pdf

Only 1 in 10 "green jobs" created were permanent. Each "green job" created was at a cost of $774,000. They also conclude that the job loss is higher because of companies moving out of country due to higher energy costs. This is not what we need in the US.

Even if Obama is stumbling around the health care labrinth and does not have the business background to implement green jobs himself, our country needs unification around the universal value of health care for all citizens--especially preventive measures. Concerning green jobs, no industry succeeds without saving energy and minimizing pollution. Pollution is an asset, believe it or not, if it's contained, or separated into value streams.

So, my point is that finally we have a President who understands the importance of our most valuable asset--all citizens, and secondly, he is willing to push for jobs, which improve long term health of people and the planet

Renewables less than 5% (especially if you take out hydropower; which greens don't like-kills fish, ruins free flowing rivers, etc). Where is the green electricity going to come from to replace coal and nukes? Media: "Cover everyone, lower cost."

Larry,
It is worse than that. The Obama administration knew exactly what Van Jones was when they gave him that job. That is why he was a 'czar'. 'Czar' appointments don't have to be approved by the Senate. That is why Obama now has 30 'czars'. If you go through the names, you will find a whose who of the radical left(communists). Van Jones was forced to resign in the middle of the night on a holiday weekend, which proves that Obama is pretty sure that he can keep the media from paying any attention to the rest of his comrades. Obama's handlers are all communists. Obama is just the political face being used for the benefit of all the 'useful idiots' in the USA. Watch how well he reads his teleprompter tonight and you will see why these communists ran him as their candidate. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are nothing more than unwitting supporters of this cadre. The Democrat party has been hijacked by them and there are lots of Democrats who don't like it.

Attention Democrats: When health care is "free", imagine the lines at the doctors offices and emergency rooms waiting for that "free" care. Maybe your place in line will be behind about 75 illegal aliens, 110 welfare recipients, and the rest of us who need care but will be force to wait for it like we're in a Depression-era bread line. The number of patients will certainly test your patience!

Actually, the whole "birther" lunacy started with Hillary Clinton supporters questioning Obama's eligibility. It's never particularly been a phenomenon of "some Republican voters." It's basically been some Democrats, then some conspiracy nuts of both parties (and fringe parties and indies) including of course some Republicans. I don't have much sympathy for leftists who are appalled by the birther idiocy considering how their paranoid conspiracy theorizing about the 2000 Florida recount and 9-11 are what legitimized this form of "inquiry" and made it meainstream and acceptable.

And don't think it will be too easy to vote them out in 2010 either. First of all you need a viable candidate - you can't beat somebody with nobody. Next, you have to be able to finance that candidate. Current finance laws make that very hard, and monied interests tend to side with the people in power unless it is clear that they will be voted out in the next election. And last but not least, the MSM still largely controls public opinion, at least of the moderates and independents that decide elections. The MSM hates the GOP with total fury, and they have a financial interest in keeping the Democrats in power so they can get their bailout. No one should have any illusions as to how hard it will be to change control of the House in 2010.

I am a Birther.

All Barry has to do is open up the files he refuses to open; his college and school records and an actual real document of live birth.

If the laws at the time of his birth state that he was ineligible, then we find ourselves in the constitutional crises mode.

For myself, his mom was American, and that is good enough; but there is reason to believe he used an Indonesian pass port for much of his life. THAT bugs me no end.

Removing him from office would be, what TEd Kennedy used to call," A good start."

Mr Callawar, I recently graduated with a degree in economics and I would love to explain how green jobs will destroy jobs in the United States. America would already be using green technology if it were less expensive then our current techniques but it is more expensive. In real terms this means that it takes more resources to get the same amount of product. Normally these additional funds would have been used by consumers to purchase goods or by investors to invest in business both actions stimulate the economy, create positive gdp growth and create jobs. It is really quite simple but our brilliant Harvard educated president doesn't get it! I'm tired of this country being run by the lawyers for the lawyers! Libertarians 2012

martin francis,
You're right that BO is stumbling around with health care. Yet you want him to keep stumbling? He's never run anything other than a campaign, and that was only successful because he convinced a majority of the public that he was something he wasn't. Do you really believe you can trust him? We can't AFFORD universal health care. Our country is already bankrupt. If it takes on health care, it can only go deeper in debt. As for companies only profiting if they minimize pollution, as Callawar said early on, "where are the facts?" I'm not advocating waste as a virtue, but do you think the railroads and lumber barons of the 19th century had to minimize waste to be profitable? BO doesn't value the American citizens for anything other than their ability to pay taxes.

What the radical leftist want, and I believe obama to be one, is extreme gov control through health care, cap and tax hoax, controlling finance, controlling business, controlling you and me, (high taxes, regulations, rules..."thank you sir, may I have another?") Like I posted earlier, the division in this country is becoming more over Freedom verses tyranny than anything else, not divisions of party and race, but they want us divided amongst ourselves so we will be weak. The focus must be kept on the enemy of Freedom and Liberties.

In the nineteenth century, whale oil was an energy source of choice in the Western world. Whales began to be overfished, and the price of whale oil went up. Entrepeneurs began to see uses for petroleum - cheaper than whale oil. An anti-environmental industry (whaling for oil) shrunk, and a relatively green industry (drilling for petroleum) was born. No czar needed. When the petroleum gets short enough that we need it for essential plastics and pharmaceuticals, entrepreneurs will find and sell other sources of energy - if the government doesn't interfere too much. Government planning can be very environmentally destructive - go look at the oil slicks of Siberia.

The East Bay Express for November 2, 2005, reported:

And it was, like, ‘This is what I need to be a part of… I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary…I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th..By August, I was a communist.”

Like most liberals, callawar, has NEVER experienced the moment of when a FACT destroys a long held assumption. When faced with this dilemna, a liberal just ignores the facts, makes up lies or attacks the provider of facts so that they can continue to exist in their simplistic and self congratulatory state of delusion. It is almost Orwellian. To paraphrase Dickens, a liberal's offenses carry their own punishments. Callawar has been humiliated and will likely never post here again (at least under that screen name) but his or her ignorance will go on undeterred. Count on it.

All of you libertarians like to comment on who is a communist and who is not--as if that actually matters today. To state the obvious falsehood that there are no birthers or deathers in positions of power is simply dishonest. Ever heard of Ms. Palin or Ms. Bachman or the author of the birther legislation or . . . But it's easier to spin out your own fantasies about the government takeover (as your own appointed chosen one use to say--elections are the accountability moment and Mr. Obama certainly has more political capital than Mr. Bush ever had. And yes, I do expect to be pilloried by comments, but regurgitated "facts" you have gleaned from Hannity, Beck and obscure little right wing websites will never hurt this man and lies and obfuscation can never be dressed up by appealing to "reliable sources" like those. Orwell was right--ignorance is bliss. Enjoy you bliss.

Want proof on 'green jobs'? Google the 'broken windows fallacy'. Essentially, YES you can 'create' jobs by busting out the windows of everybody on your block. But you aren't creating wealth- somebody has to pay for what you are rebuilding, so in the end you are simply transferring money from one party to another (with the usual government waste subtracted out). In this case, anybody who uses electricity pays more on their bill to give some environment bureaucrat a job counting paper clips.

Absurd claim that Obama was not born in the U.S.?

One thing is clear to me, as it would be to anyone has researched the situation: either (1) Obama was not born in the U.S., or (2) there is some piece of information on his birth certificate that he needs to hide.

The former is more plausible for a number of reasons, including but not at all limited to (1) the short form Hawaii certificate is a computer-generated fake, (2) Dunham and the just-born Obama visited Seattle in early August, 1961, which implies a return trip to Hawaii from Kenya, (3) there is a wide variety of evidence in Kenya supporting his birth there.

Most of the Operating positions can be filled by existing trained Technicians crossing over from Coal to Wind. However, when one considers the ancillary workers in providing and transporting the Coal, manufacturing the machinery to mine the Coal, etc, versus the maintainence of the Windfarm, there will be a net job loss between 60 and 75%.

I've been hearing that the jobs that the 32 "czars" were appointed to are not subject to "vetting" or review by congress. Why Not? Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power to "vest the appointment of such inferior officers, as they think proper". Isn't it "proper" to review the history and philosophies of appointees who seem to have so much power over shaping presidential policies?

ETEE, you got my attention. Could it be the wind power is less labor-intensive than coal power, given the same generating capacity?

Re: "please give me the first hand proof that President Obama is a US citizen. I am not a birther, but still wonder why there is absolutely no first hand proof."

NO president has ever proven that he was born in the USA until Obama. Obama has provided legal proof by showing the official birth certificate of Hawaii. The Certification of Live Birth is the legal birth certificate of Hawaii, and the only one that Hawaii sends out. (http://www.starbulletin.com/columnists/kokualine/20090606_kokua_line.html). This document has been confirmed twice by the officials in Hawaii, and there is even a witness who recalls being told of the birth in Hawaii in 1961. Re: "The US Govt requires a Certified copy of a Birth Certificate to get a passport or a driver's license from the State of Indiana, but Obama didn't need to provide the same information to become President."

Obama has shown the official birth certificate of Hawaii, which is accepted by the US State Department as proof of birth in the USA for issuing passports.

Re: "Barack Obama's half-sister (born to Re: Barack Obama's mother and her husband, Mr. Soetoro, in Indonesia) has a Hawaiian Birth Certificate and she was born in Indonesia.'

No she doesn't. More importantly, the law that enabled this was not passed until 1982, more than twenty years after Obama's birth. At the time it was not possible to file a foreign birth certificate in a Hawaii file. So the original in Obama's file must be from Hawaii.

Re: "there is reason to believe he used an Indonesian pass port for much of his life."

Obama never had an Indonesian passport because he was never an Indonesian citizen. You can call the Indonesian Embassy in Washington to check ((202) 775-5200).

The US State Department confirms that Obama was never an Indonesian citizen in a legal filing. (http://www.scribd.com/full/17508463?access_key=key-1vg7c228ugapeqcnkki6, and look for the answer at 40)

Re: "there is a wide variety of evidence in Kenya supporting his birth there."

There is absolutely no evidence in Kenya that Obama was born there. The grandmother never said that he was born in Kenya. She said he was born in Hawaii.

You can hear her say "America, Hawaii" in response to the question: "Whereabouts was he born?'

Listen to the complete tape.Listen to the complete tape, until after the question "Whereabouts was he born?" http://www.obamacrimes.info/Telephone_Interview_with_Sarah_Hussein_Obama_10-16-

Further to: "there is a wide variety of evidence in Kenya supporting his birth there."

Then, if he were born in Kenya, there would have to be a US document proving that he was IN Kenya at the time. That's because he would have had to get from Kenya to the USA. To do that, he would have needed either a British passport and a US visa on that passport. Or his mother's passport would have had to be changed to include him.

One or the other would have had to have been done while Obama was in Kenya, or he could not get from Kenya to Hawaii.

Either of those documents would be in the files of the US State Department, if they existed. The Republicans were in charge of the State Department for years before the election and for three months after the election. No such document has been found.

Re: "All Barry has to do is open up the files he refuses to open; his college and school records and an actual real document of live birth."

Obama has posted the official birth certificate of Hawaii, which is the only one that it sends out. (http://www.starbulletin.com/columnists/kokualine/20090606_kokua_line.html)

No president has ever posted his complete college files, meaning the results on every course. Some presidents have voluntarily made their grade point averages (the average of all the courses) available). But this is on a voluntary basis. There is no law that says you have a right to see the president's grades.

Moreover, in this case the plaintiffs were asking for the complete academic records and housing records. I fail to see how either would show anything about his nationality and his housing records would violate the privacy of the people he lived with.

The "Gang of Six" will discuss the issues till doomsday, The outcome will be dictated by the Speaker.

Mr Obama's performance 9/9/9 was clouded by lots of smoke and mirrors such as a carny will use on the rubes.
(Was the smoke created by his pants being on fire?)

Daniel Patrick Moynihan was quoted as having said: "I can't believe what I just heard, and I don't". Mr. Obama was silent or telling half-truths on a number of things.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: "The cruelest lies are often told in silence."

It is disturbingly obvious that M. Barone knows little about Obama's ineligibility issue, but comes across as if he does; even going as far as comparing it to the "truthers". His credibility suffers and is now suspect.

Y'all go easy on Jim. He's having a hard time dealing with reality. Happens a lot these days to people on the Left. It's always a good sign when they retreat to the "race" canard. It means they've lost the argument and don't know what else to say.
