Under fire, Democrats abandon ACORN in droves

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

(AP File)

Back in February, during the Democrats' frenzied rush to pass the $787 billion economic stimulus bill, Republican Sen. David Vitter offered a simple, 28-word amendment: "None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used directly or indirectly to fund the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now." Vitter's amendment was shot down, 51-45, with all the votes coming from the Democratic majority.

At about the same time, GOP lawmakers introduced similar measures in the House. Those, too, were defeated by Democratic majorities.

Fast-forward to Monday, Sept. 14. A Housing Department appropriations bill was moving through the Senate, and Republican Sen. Mike Johanns offered an amendment that was nearly word-for-word identical to the one Vitter introduced back in February, barring all federal housing funds for ACORN. This time, the ACORN-defunding amendment passed, 83-7. The winning total included 50 -- yes, 50 -- Democrats. Liberals like Chris Dodd, Dianne Feinstein, Carl Levin, Charles Schumer and others who supported ACORN back in February all changed their votes to approve the cutoff of funds.

That was just a preview of what would happen on Thursday, across the Capitol in the House of Representatives. Just 48 hours after Republican Leader John Boehner introduced the "Defund ACORN Act," which would ban all federal funds for the group, the House Democratic leadership agreed to a vote on the bill. Boehner's measure passed 345-to-75, with 172 Democrats voting to cut off funds for an organization that had long worked on behalf of Democrats nationwide.

It was an absolutely mind-blowing turn of events, a total collapse of longtime Democratic support for ACORN. Republicans had worked for years to reduce ACORN's influence, with little success. Now, in the span of a few days, the GOP scored major victories.

Everybody knows why. None of this would have happened had it not been for undercover videos, released on the new Web site BigGovernment, which caught ACORN employees in Baltimore, Washington, New York City and California in the act of encouraging tax fraud and prostitution, including prostitution involving underage girls. The videos, which were ignored by most big media organizations other than Fox News, had a huge effect on Capitol Hill.

"I was stunned by what I saw," says Johanns, who has had his eye on ACORN since joining the Senate in January. "I just could not believe that you could have a situation where people were so complacent, so complicit, in what was clearly activity that was not only illegal but just unbelievably wrong."

The BigGovernment videos came in the wake of news that arrest warrants had been issued for 11 former ACORN workers in Florida accused of forging hundreds of voter registration applications. In light of those revelations, lawmakers who once felt confident voting on ACORN's behalf were forced to reconsider; a vote for ACORN was no longer safe. In literally hours, years of Democratic sponsorship of ACORN virtually disappeared.

There are still many steps ahead. Johanns and others have introduced a new bill, the "Protect Taxpayers from ACORN Act," which would do the same thing as the total-defunding bill in the House. If it passes, there will be a conference committee to reach agreement on a final version of the bill, which will then have to pass the House and Senate before winning President Obama's signature. At any point along the way, Democrats might reverse themselves and again take up ACORN's cause.

Then there is what Republicans see as Part Two of the process. For the GOP, the goal is not just to cut off ACORN's federal money. It's to get to the bottom of all the allegations of corruption at ACORN and affiliated organizations around the country. On Tuesday, Johanns sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder urging a Justice Department investigation into the full range of ACORN allegations. Rep. Lamar Smith in the House made a similar request. No word yet on what Holder will decide.

There's no way to know how it will end. But it's now a fact that there are on-the-record votes of large majorities of Democrats favoring the total cutoff of federal funds for ACORN -- a virtually unheard-of possibility just one week ago. What a difference a video can make.

It's like people who now support socialized medicine - saying medical care is better in (fill in the blank).Virtually all of the evidence is to the contrary - I ask... when was the last time you required health care in western Europe.
Uninformed, unsupported statements.

Why did you inject race?

...my race comments were directed toward Hilary.
Politics and prosecution don't and shouldn't mix. So, let's start by dropping the totally political prosecution of CIA agents. And prosecute the thugs who intimidate people at polls in Philly (many minutes of video I guess wasn't enough to convince Holder - guy holding a club, nah.).

It's not over yet for ACORN. Many liberal organizations / businesses are going to start funding ACORN. ACORN has millions in reserves to keep them operating. They will be asking for the Gov't to start funding them again if they improve their organization, just in time for the 2012 elections!

Sep 18, 2009

millions? It won't be enough. Why? Because We,the honest hardworking American citizens have had ENOUGH!

Uh, guys, if there were 435 votes for, then there would have been zero votes against since there are only 435 members in the House! Still it was an overwhelming victory. Nancy Pelosi totally lost control of the agenda. And to think this happened despite the best efforts of the ostrich media to ignore it. Hey Charlie (Gibson) , still planning to leave this story to the "cables?"

ACORN is only a part. What about SEIU?
Until April 22, this year, ACORN proudly listed SEIU as one of its' affiliates. Ousted Wade Rafke from ACORN is a founder of SEIU. His brother is a founder of ACORN International.

I have a feeling we have only scratched the surface.

Acorn is but a part of an even larger criminal enterprise headed by the DNC. Obvious members of the conspiracy are Acorn and all affiliates, SEIU, NEA, AFL/CIO, the fringe media (NYT, Wpo, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC.
I'm so old that I remember when Democrats led the charge to remove corruption from politics, now they are the corruption. Attorney General Robert Kennedy championed the charge against corruption in labor unions now Attorney General Eric Holder sleeps with them.
"Democrat" has become the synonym for "corrupt".

Stargazer, I agree. As in the 1930s, Soviet front groups would draw too much fire, and they'd simply change their name and pop-up again with the same people. Acorn and their ilk are a structural part of the Democrat party. This structure includes the SEIU/Stop Walmart/AFL-CIO and is supported by the infrastructure of academic disciplines such as Minority Studies and Labor Relations, law schools among others. These groups are not going away. The Democrats need these groups so they can slap down the race card, at will, anywhere in the country, these groups are the Democrats one-stop community agitation shops. I'm grateful to those like Biggovernment.com and others for doing the spadework of exposing the and rooting them out. The fight never ends.

I meant us forking over billions to the white guys. Still don't follow that one. Obviously, what they (the rich white guys) did was criminal - and I hope investors got back everything they could and went after them personally. Prosecute people that break the law - who cares what they did or what they look like... who cares, a criminal is a criminal.
Something else - there are far more poor white people than black people. Where are all of the organizations for poor white people?
Huh,... ya think the "white college fund" would be labeled racist? One of my best friends - a black guy - laughs at the irony.

ACORN's leaders are white (Rathke bros). Some have compared this group to being run like a old southern plantation, exploiting the poor black workers, using them and tossing them aside. It's the leaders that need to be investigated and prosecuted.

Listen...ACORN is a criminal organization. Are there good people doing normal work in ACORN? Of course; it's a big organization.

But...on the whole, ACORN is crimninal. Dems haven't abandoned them just because of these videos either. There was also the massive voter registration fraud perpetrated by ACORN last year, as well as a number of indictments and convictions for various offenses. Plenty of vids on all of this stuff on Youtube too.

No, like Van Jones, and Pastor Wright, ACORN has become a colossal embarassment for Obama...so under the bus they go! About time too!!

Great Job!

Let's kill off one of the few groups helping poor people stay in their homes during the worst recession since the 1930's. It's good to know that we are thinking clearly on this. Maybe next, we'll get rid of Unemployment benefits and all tax cuts for the lower class bracket. Perhaps those poor sods will get lucky and die of H1N1 before the hunger gets to them.

well grenouille, I want to help poor people, and it's my dollor they are using to do it. That's good. But I want my whole dollar to go to the effort. Right now half of that dollor is skimmed. Part goes to rich, corrupt, white, Rathke brothers and the rest gets recycled back to politicians to keep them in office and voting for more of my dollars.

PS grenouille sounds like New Orleans, I lived ther for a while, capital of ACORN scam and perfect example of poor people being kept on the Plantation to support politicians.

Grenouille,

ACORN is what is killing off ACORN. If people suffer from lack of ACORN funds, then they can blame ACORN.
If you feel that we should ignore 5, count them, FIVE ACORN offices offering to help aid in setting up child sex-slave rings and assist in tax evasion, why don't you just come out and say so! Don't hide behind the 'it's everyone else's fault and the poor will suffer' line.
Besides, you're probably a racist anyway.

"Hilary" posted an identical reply in three places that I know of: this article, Scott Ott's column in the Examiner, and on Powerline - and did it almost as soon as the articles were published. In other words, "Hilary" is a piece of software, not a human, that scans the web and posts robo-replies. This has become a standard disruptive practice among the people who told us dissent is patriotic and tolerance is sacrosanct. Keep it in mind next time you see a troll at the top of a comments page.

For nearly a year now, I have been saying and posting that ACORN was a goverment-funded PAC (political action committee) for the DNC. Now it seems others have seen many of the things I have seen. The voter registration drive for the DNC has been derailed. What's next? Well there's something dirty in Harlem, and millions of taxpayer dollars unaccounted for. The powerful WAYS AND MEANS chairman, Rep. Charlie Rangel, has faulty tax returns. Seems he can't remember having or making so much money. What more amazing, he is the ONE who writes the tax laws for the rest of us. If he were a republican, he would have already resigned, and Pelosi would have been screaming her head off. If Holder wants to do an investigation, Rangel is a better place to start than the CIA.

People please try to follow along, exposing ACORN and condemning the way it uses false charges of racism to secure political funding and job favortism is DOING A FAVOR to the black community.

These people do not need a bunch of lawless political thugs as representatives of their neighborhoods. Until Lyndon Johnson started the big socialist payouts of the great society, 80% of black children lived in a two-parent home. Now that number is something like 28%.

Stop the poverty pimps by demanding that community organizers are audited on their honesty and results, not on how many votes they can buy.

Maxine Waters and Jesse Jackson say the CIA destroyed the black family - look in the mirror you socialist shills.
