Why Gregg Bailed

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
February 13, 2009

Sen. Judd Gregg, R- N.H., arrives to a news conference to announce that he will withdraw from his nomination as commerce secretary Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)
When he took the job, Republicans searched for a diplomatic way to ask: Are you crazy?

After 16 years as a Republican senator from New Hampshire, Judd Gregg has a lot of friends among GOP lawmakers, and in the past two weeks, many of them -- perhaps most of them -- have been wondering why he chose to accept Barack Obama's offer to become Commerce Secretary.  Their objections intensified in the last week, as Republicans grew more worried about the Obama administration's plan to move control of the politically-sensitive 2010 Census from the Commerce Department to the White House.  For Gregg himself, concerns about having the Census taken away from Commerce dovetailed with more general fears that a Democratic White House would restrict his freedom to run the Department.  Finally, on Thursday afternoon, Gregg formally withdrew.

"I think he had buyer's remorse," one GOP senator told me.  "After he looked into it more, he said, 'Whoa, this was a mistake.'"

"He's been getting Republicans walking up to him saying, 'Are you going to let the White House circumvent you, are you going to let them do this to you?'" one GOP aide who is aware of those conversations told me Thursday night.  "This was a natural conflict that was going to arise, and on a personal level, politics aside, people were saying 'Hey, are you sure you want to do this?'"

The answer was no. "I've been my own person for 30 years," Gregg told reporters late Thursday.  "I've been a governor and I've been a congressman. I've been a senator, made my own decisions, stood for what I believe in."  As he explained himself, Gregg made clear that, as a member of the Obama cabinet, he would have been called on to take actions that violated his principles. "I have a core set of political and philosophical beliefs," Gregg said.  "In the context of what was going on this week, and in the context of what I saw coming…it would be virtually impossible for me to do this job."

And what was going on this week?  In a written statement released before his news conference, Gregg explained that "on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me." A short time later, in front of the press, Gregg played down both issues, but a number of observers believed his original statement was the more accurate. On the stimulus, his decision to stay out of the debate had put him in an awkward position; as a longtime fiscal conservative, he couldn't vote his conscience, because it would conflict with the president who offered him a place in the cabinet, and as the Commerce Secretary-designate, he couldn't vote with the president, because it would violate his conscience. So he chose not to vote at all. On the Census, Gregg told reporters that it "was not a major issue," but he appeared to protest too much when he said the Census "wasn't a big enough issue for me to even discuss what the issue was."  If that were the case, then why did he specifically mention it in his written statement?

At the very least, the Census issue would have made for a very uncomfortable confirmation hearing.  Gregg's fellow Republicans on the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee would certainly have asked him what he thought of a plan that would move control of the Census from professionals in the Commerce Department to Rahm Emanuel, the hyper-partisan White House chief of staff. What would Gregg have said? It was the stimulus problem all over again; Gregg couldn't have said what he believed, but he probably couldn't have brought himself to support the president, either.

So now Gregg is out.  His fellow Republicans are delighted to have him back; it's likely his informal role in the party's leadership will not be affected by his flirtation with the Obama cabinet. For its part, the White House is back to the beginning in its snakebit search for a Commerce Secretary.  And the Census issue is likely to intensify, with Republican senators Susan Collins and Kay Bailey Hutchison now exploring the question, joining several members of the House who were first to express concern.  The Gregg nomination is dead, but the Census controversy might just be coming to life.

Why did Gregg ever even consider this? Did Gregg not think that he would be marginalized and rolled out only when Obama wanted to show off his "bipartisanship"? I fear what any White House could do with the Census data. So much federal spending depends on Census data and if the liberals get in any of the statistical "fixes" then spending will skyrocket even more.

There was some maneuvering in New Hampshire to push him into accepting by threatening a nasty re-election race in 2010. I think his re-election just got easier.

I don't think he should have an informal role in the Republicans' already-pitiful leadership. Anyone so clueless as to have not realized after the longest campaign in history that our new president person was a redistributey piece of Chicago street trash just doesn't have the judgment to get the job done I think.

Clearly Greg is burned out in the Senate and wants to go home. I guess he figured going out as an ex-cabinet guy would have more marketability and credibility than as a Northeastern minority RINO. That is until he figured he had more integrity than to simply sit like a potted plant and let Rham-Bo take over the census and cast republicans forever in the the minority by manipulating the data.

The Commerce position seems to have a curse attached to it. Since Obama is taking away the main job of commerce, why not just abolish the whole department altogether?? The White House seems to be lacking work since they are taking on the census, they can do the rest of whatever it is the commerce department does as well.

I question Gregg's sanity for considering supping with the devil, but now we know the dims are going to try to rig the census in their favor, so the outcome of this is very beneficial to the republicans. Look for ACORN to be doing lots of census "counting" and get your pitchforks ready.

Gregg is an honest and responsible politician ... I know very rare. He has never failed to respond to my mail and view. I believe like many who are now waking up to Hussein arrogance and power hunger, he recognizes the danger to our Republic. Lincoln was the cause for Ft. Sumpter wherein, Northern states were going to enforce their will on Trade. Today the States that are producers are forced to bail out States that do not produce but want to raid the National treasury to support their Liberal policies. Major case in Point is MA. 1st we feed their criminal gov/mafia in the "big dig" now a Gov gift of 4.5 billion $ for their failed health scheme. It is time for MA, VT, NY, NJ, ME, CA, etc to get their hands on the plow of National interests or leave the Union (hopefully peacefully), exception those that are making the system work. Then we can reform the FedGov and make it responsible to the folks that make this country great.

Hello? The census has always been political. Democrats will try to make sure everyone is accounted for. Republicans will try to limit those counted to wealthy white people. He just wanted to seperate himself from the near future of Obamas failed stimulus package/administration. Everyone sees that in 2 years the situation will be worse not better and he doesnt want to be in the "group pic" of reid, pelosi and obamas screwup. I should sat reid and pelosi because barack is acting in the white house the same as he asts at his house. He does as he is told. If not by michelle, he will be told by pelosi and/or reid. These dumbocrats DO NOT CARE what happens to our country.--They got theirs and if things get really bad here theyll just take their millions and move to france or whatever european hellhole of their choice. Dumbocrats do not care about anyone but themselves and their immediate family. period.

He was signing on to take orders from a man, who as a senator, had a more leftist voting record than the only avowed socialist to ever sit there, bernie Sanders, as did his personally selected vice-president. What ever would lead him to believe he could stomach that level of far-left skulduggery?

Feb 13, 2009

Actually you're incorrect there, Mr. Riddance. Baracky and his woman want to rig the Census so we can all enjoy an uninterrupted and beneficent dirty socialist decline into developing world status. That's why it's key that a majority of citizens are relieved of paying income taxes as soon as possible.

NO POLITICAL PARTY SHOULD HAVE CONTROL OF THE CENSUS.I THINK WE SHOULD DO AWAY WITH BOTH PARTIES AND LET THE POPULAR VOTE DECIDE WHO BECOMES PRESIDENT.WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ONE NATION, UNDIVIDED AREN'T WE? THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AS LONG AS THERE ARE LOBBIESTS AND OYHER SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS INVOLVED.ALSO, GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT GETTING INVOLVED IN PRIVATE INDUSTRY, OTHER THAN REDUCING TAXES TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY.OBAMA,PELOSI,FRANK AND THEIR ILK ARE TRYING TO SAIL A RUDDERLESS SHIP WHILE THE PERFECT STORM IS APPROACHING.

If the democrats succeed in transferring the census from the commerce department to the White house it's a fact the 2010 census will be a sham and hundred of thousands of fake people will be added to the census all in favor of the democrats. This is an example of Obama's BS when he says he will have an open goverenment. Another example of the democrats failing to post the Stimulus plan on the internet before the final vote. Obviously the democracts have much to hide from the taxpayers who will foot the bill

"what he thought of a plan that would move control of the Census from professionals in the Commerce Department to Rahm Emanuel, the hyper-partisan White House chief of staff" There's simply nothing to justify this statement; the Obama administration's done absolutely nothing different from previous administrations regarding the census. Mr. York doesn't actually say what nefarious things Emanuel would do with his control of the census. Simply put, Obama has promised to look at the results of the census using statistical tests to see if it's accurate or not after a full headcount and correct it if there's proven to be an undercount. Bush did the same thing in 1990; Clinton did the same thing in 2000. The White House was involved in both of those instances as well. What's more, cabinet secretaries don't make policy, they advocate their preference to the President and ultimately implement the President's decision. Gregg reportedly understood this until he didn't.

Weakling

Feb 13, 2009

Either Gregg is so weak he can't stand up to his own party or he's an idiot for not realizing that he and President Obama are from very different ideological worlds. His "stimulus" excuse was total B.S. since he publically supported the bill two weeks ago before it was pared down! Either way, Gregg looks pathetic. I'm sure the latest Abramoff relevations that directly connect to Judd Gregg had nothing to do with his decision! What's one more GOP criminal.

I agree that Judd Gregg is a highly principled man. Perhaps he did fall under the Obama trance when O. went to the Hill to pitch his spending bill and bipartisanship. Maybe, in the glow, it looked doable...Maybe he thought his presence could at least have SOME influence from within...but the glow faded rapidly with the census issue. Now the census is in the spotlight - Thanks to Judd Gregg. I think he can do much more good in the Senate as a strong voice. I was bewildered that he had accepted the position at first...because he was going to have to dance to the tune of Obama ...I am glad he "woke up" before it was all finalized.

So York is essentially admitting he quit due to pressure from fellow Republicans who want no cooperation with the Obama admin. In short they are quite happy in the canyon they have charged into that has obstruction and national failure written over the gate. This is the route to marginalization. When a party has the presidency and big majorities in both houses, and the country is in the depths of a recession, obstruction and national failure are not banners to march under. Over the next two years there is going to be masses of legislation written and passed and basically the GOP has chosen to exclude itself from the process. This legislation is going to get woven into national life like Medicare or clean water and will be virtually irreversible for a generation if ever. This is going to turn into a huge error.

While all you war-mongering republican filth-bags who had NO PROBLEM with tossing TRILLIONS of bushie-bucks over the past 8 years at killing & maming & murdering innocents, and decimating OUR American civil liberties are now quaking in your boots at the thought of having your corrupt little right-wing-nut-job bee-hives opened up and exposed for what they really are. God forbid you greedy selfish fear-mongerers should spend a gosh-darn penny on anything but your own self-preservation. Time for the REAL pitch-fork carrying demons to be afraid! Be VERY afraid--of being exposed to the light; exposed for what you really stand for. Like Zappa said: "A working person voting republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders."

The control of the Census by the WH is a moot point because it will not be under the auspices of Emmanuel or the West Wing. Get over it, already!!

I'm amazed and saddened by hostility and rudeness of many of the comments from those identifying themselves as Republicans. How about crediting our new President for reaching out to you? He already has attempted to appoint 2 Republicans to his cabinet. GW managed only 1 Demo in his sad 8 years. Too bad Gregg turned out to be a Trojan horse, either by incompetence or design.

He dropped out for an even simpler reason. The repubs insist on continuing obstructionism reguardless of the issue. I predict they will lose more representation in Congress in 2010 and 2012.

I am not a democrat or a republican. I am neutral and I tell it like it is. You can blame Bush for Iraq but don't blame him for the economy. We are in this mess because of the housing fiasco. The government didn't force us to buy homes that we couldn't afford. It's about time that we take some responsiblities so we can learn from our mistakes. Otherwise we will be in the same situation ten to twenty years from now. Also do some research. the national debt was lowwered under president Clinton but we never really had a surplus.By the way Bush couldn't ruin the economy by himself even if he wanted to. the president doesn't make laws, congress does. For the sake of our children, grandchildren, and our beautiful country let's stop the blame game and start working toward a better future.

Why would he have thought that Obama would let him run the dept as he wanted to? Obama has made it very plain he is going to rule. He said, "I will set the policy and I expect my adminstration to carry it out." I believe that is his words if I remember correct. The American people will wake up when its too late to what they have voted themselves. Just wait till he starts appointing Supreme Court Justices.

Republicans are running the same old plays from their 92-94 playbook. It helped them win the house back, but Clinton emerged as the most successful President in history. Keep it up Republicans and Obama will be the next successful President in history.

Gregg was the one to contact the Obama administration. I have no idea why the Examiner is leaving this out. His ties to Jack Abramhoff which are pretty intense, are also coming to front and center recently. Expect to hear a LOT more about this soon enough. The census is a smoke-screen. Nothing about the process has been changed one bit. It is precisely the same as it was during Bush 2000. Again, the census is a smoke-screen.

oh. No. The Census is not a smokescreen. That's how Baracky and his woman are planning to marginalize Americans what believe in personal liberty and free enterprise. They're dirty socialist Chicago street trash. It's just kinda what they do.

Kudos to Sen. Gregg; if he were to have taken the job, he would have wound up being Pres. Obama's lap-dog. Furthermore, if any of you have been paying attention to the Census in recent decades, the Congressional districts and corresponding Electoral College votes has been shifting toward red states in the Sunbelt South and Rocky Mountain West and away from blue states in the Rustbelt areas in the Northeast and Midwest...and no doubt Obama and the Democrats would like to do something to change that. What better way to begin than to take control of the Census, eh? Keep vigilant of these socialist sleazeballs...lest we become the S.U.A.(Soviet Union of America).

We WILL NOT be marginalized! We will NOT "be kept" by the government/big brother. Some of us remember WHY we came to America in the first place.

So - instead of staying to offer a differing view which might help assure that the Republican side is hear he abandons his post. That makes a lot of sense. Run like a coward to the safety of people who think like he does rather than stand tall. Sounds like he wanted to manipulate the Census and when he couldn't there was no reason to stay.

Your bigotry (racism?) is showing, and your party has obviously left you no more than the bitterness and self-loathing that you project onto those who are trying to rescue our country from the ditch in which your former president (Bush) and his cronies have left us. Don't be part of the problem if you can't be part of the solution.

Feb 14, 2009

The GOP mafia couldnt have made it's character more visible to the blind when they threatened the senators who voted for the stimulus package; it's obvious what 'happened' to Gregg. If all the bible thumping, fiscally responsible conservatives had any clue over the last 8 years, Obama or any other President would NOT be needing a stimulus plan now. The least Republicans could do is have the integrity to admit the wrongs they have done to this nation. You cant be a part of the solution of a problem if you cant even see where you made the error. Strange how after a fiscally conservative Republican government, we are in the red while under a liberal 'spending' governemnt, we end up with a surplus. GOP its time to man up, accept your role in the mess we now find ourselves in as a country, and admit the strategies you implement DID NOT WORK!!

Oh well, Gregg finally wised up to the fact that he would be working with democrat traitors. They've been traitors for the last 8 years siding with Islamic terrorist and nothing will change. How proud and brave democrats are to stand with and support suicide bombers against George W. Bush. As for this large IQ democrats blather about, I didn't realize Uhhh-uh-uhm that a teleprompter had an IQ??

"As for this large IQ democrats blather about, I didn't realize Uhhh-uh-uhm that a teleprompter had an IQ??" Teleprompter?? What teleprompter?? You've been listening to Rush and his delusional fantasies. C'mon, plug into your own brain, spend the time and do some research before you let fools put words in your mouth. The uh-uhms are a sign of intelligent people whose brains work faster than their mouths.
