Without Bush, media lose interest in war caskets

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
September 29, 2009

In this undated photo released by the U.S. Department of Defense and obtained by thememoryhole.org shows flag-draped coffins of U.S. war casualties aboard a cargo plane in Dover, Del. (AP)

Remember the controversy over the Pentagon policy of not allowing the press to take pictures of the flag-draped caskets of American war dead as they arrived in the United States? Critics accused President Bush of trying to hide the terrible human cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"These young men and women are heroes," Vice President Biden said in 2004, when he was senator from Delaware. "The idea that they are essentially snuck back into the country under the cover of night so no one can see that their casket has arrived, I just think is wrong."

In April of this year, the Obama administration lifted the press ban, which had been in place since the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Media outlets rushed to cover the first arrival of a fallen U.S. serviceman, and many photographers came back for the second arrival, and then the third.

But after that, the impassioned advocates of showing the true human cost of war grew tired of the story. Fewer and fewer photographers showed up. "It's really fallen off," says Lt. Joe Winter, spokesman for the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where all war dead are received. "The flurry of interest has subsided."

That's an understatement. When the casket bearing Air Force Tech. Sgt. Phillip Myers, of Hopewell, Va., arrived at Dover the night of April 5 -- the first arrival in which press coverage was allowed -- there were representatives of 35 media outlets on hand to cover the story. Two days later, when the body of Army Spc. Israel Candelaria Mejias, of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, arrived, 17 media outlets were there. (All the figures here were provided by the Mortuary Affairs Operations Center.) On subsequent days in April, there were nearly a dozen press organizations on hand to cover arrivals.

Fast forward to today. On Sept. 2, when the casket bearing the body of Marine Lance Cpl. David Hall, of Elyria, Ohio, arrived at Dover, there was just one news outlet -- the Associated Press -- there to record it. The situation was pretty much the same when caskets arrived on Sept. 5, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 22, 23 and 26. There has been no television coverage at all in September.

The media can cover arrivals only when the family gives its permission. In all the examples above, the families approved, which is more often than not the case; since the policy was changed, according to the Mortuary Affairs Office, 60 percent of families have said yes to full media coverage.

But these days, the press hordes that once descended on Dover are gone, and there's usually just one organization on hand. The Associated Press, which supplies photos to 1,500 U.S. newspapers and 4,000 Web sites, has had a photographer at every arrival for which permission was granted. "It's our belief that this is important, that surely somewhere there is a paper, an audience, a readership, a family and a community for whom this homecoming is indeed news," says Paul Colford, director of media relations for AP. "It's been agreed internally that this is a responsibility for the AP to be there each and every time it is welcome."

Colford says the AP has a photographer who lives within driving distance of Dover and is able to make it to the arrivals, no matter what time of day or night. As for the network news, it's not so simple; a night arrival means overtime pay for a union camera crew. And then there's the question of convenience. "It seems that if the weather is nice, and it's during the day, we get a higher level of media to come down," says Lt. Winter. "But a majority of our transfers occur in the early evening and overnight."

So far this month, 38 American troops have been killed in Afghanistan. For all of 2009, the number is 220 -- more than any other single year and more than died in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 combined.

With casualties mounting, the debate over U.S. policy in Afghanistan is sharp and heated. The number of arrivals at Dover is increasing. But the journalists who once clamored to show the true human cost of war are nowhere to be found.

Byron? Are you reading my posts? I've been writing this for MONTHS. Where ARE the pictures of the COFFINS? I thought that "The People Have a RIGHT TO KNOW". They GOT what they wanted. Key word: wanted. I'm still waiting for the first shot. And where is that DAILY BODY COUNT, from the Alphabet Media? How many TROOPS WERE KILLED today? How many were WOUNDED HORRIBLY? Anybody seen any EXCLUSIVES from WALTER REED, lately? And, shouldn't we be coming up on one of those 'MILESTONES' pretty soon? You know, when the number of KILLED gets to one of those nice round numbers. Shouldn't they have printed some 'TOP SECRET' MILITARY PLAN on their FRONT PAGES by now? What happened to all that stuff?
They think that we're STUPID. They think that we can't see what they're doing. But it doesn't matter, because they don't care. There's BAILOUTS to be had. And one does not bite the hand that feeds one. If you thought it was bad before? You ain't seen NOTHING yet.

I'd be very interested to find out how often Obama meets with GOld Star mothers and fathers. Bush met with hundreds of them to thank them for their sacrifice. What does Obama do?

Sep 29, 2009

Thank you Byron - and 'kabookey' - you're correct, of course. The issue of the number and 'dignity' of the returning casualties was really just another cudgel with which to bash George Bush and his WH. Good for the AP - they're correct, in every home town, there are families and friends who want to know and honor their local fallen heroes. Thanks for writing this, Byron - and showing the hypocrisy. Keep it up.

Where can I find the leftwing agitprop site Afghanistan Body Count?

Those types of sites were so vogue to the left and the media when Bush was in charge. Now that Obama's in charge? Not so much.

Wonder why.

Sep 29, 2009

A very important question indeed: Just how many families of our fallen heroes has Obama met with? I *hope* it is all of them, but I suspect it is a very tiny number, since he has sooo many important things on his hands. Like the Chicago Olympic proposal, which he envisages as a global tribute to himself at the end of his self-assumed second term.

Julie

Sep 29, 2009

Ironic that the annointed one has time to use taxpayer money to fly Air Force One (yet again) to Sweden to plead for the 2016 Olympics but doesn't have the time to visit with General McCrystal about troop needs in Afghanistan, nor have the time to visit any Gold Star Mothers. Can't wait for 2010 and 2012 when we get our country back.

Sep 29, 2009

Typical liberal BS. They moan and groan and b.itch and holler about things, but when a loser like Obama is president, they overlook everything. Obama does NOT care about the troops. Bush visited the troops in hospitals and at their homes. Bush even visited the parents of fallen troops. Obama just goes to the gym or plays basketball.

Sep 29, 2009

Just a small point. The fallen members of our military are shipped in transfer cases, not coffins. That comes after preparation and placing them in a dress uniform. Dover is the central receiving, embalming and shipping point in CONUS. The people who work there should also be honored as it is not easy to return a fallen son/husband to a natural state of appearance.

President Narcissist is in Denmark lobbying for his Chicago union thugs to get the Olympics. Yep, the narcissist is flying the 747 that you and I get to pay for, so he and his fat ugly wife can cavort to the European mountains. Meanwhile, our troops are dying in Afghanistan because the have insufficient troop levels to do their job effectively. Someone tell me how this mirror worshipper convinced so many of you stupid gullible people out there to pull the lever for him just because he promised 'change'. Did any of you stop to think what 'change' can mean?! Like,......for the worse.

Journalists are a lot like lawyers aren't they?

DJHoward

Sep 29, 2009

And this is surprising? The dishonestly and lack of journalistic integrity by ABC/NYT/LAT/CBS/CNN/NBC et all is absolutely amazing and as far as I'm concerned they have forfeited their first ammendment protections when they chose to mid-lead the American people and take sides.

They've helped the dems lie and demonize REAL AMERICANS (unlike Pelosi and Obama) who have had the nerve to question the absolutely abysmal and un-American policies the idiot dems are pushing - oh but we're just fear mongering, hate filled, right wing extremists and racists, NOT REAL AMERICANS PROTESTING like the liberals did for anything and everything Bush did... but that was very brave and patritoic... we (ie. the overwhelming majority of American who oppose Obama's policies)are not

I'm convincing that liberal democrats are the people that got picked on when they were kids, the nerds and geeks, and the people with no common sense, like a scene from the movie revenge of the nerds ...when givenm power they want revenge...its bad for America and we need to shove them back into the abyss

Those who say the media is not biased left are blind as a bat.
But a request from his top general in Afghanistan for more troops goes unanswered by Obama. In fact he has only talked to him once in the past 7 months. What war?? Sorry, I have another TV show to go on and the Olympics to worry about.

Thanks for posting that Jonus - Bush indeed wrote a personal note to each and every family of a fallen soldier the entire time he was President, and kept it pretty to himself - no fan-fair no "look at me". Just something he felt he had to do, as a person and as their Commander-in-Chief - acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice for their country. I doubt our current Prez has even thought beyond "when's my next TV appearance", let alone any concern for our troops.

The media only shows up when it is convenient for them. That says a lot, doesn't it? We wouldn't want to inconvenience them after they put up such a stink over it, would we.

I'm sure it's a bit of an inconvenience for the families receiving the remains of our nation's heroes too. But now that the people who complained have their own president in charge they no longer want to bother with thinking about such things.

And when are we going to be ending this war Mr. President? I thought that was going to happen on day one.

Oh, by the way, I can't even count how many soldiers signed up again right before Bush left, only because they didn't want to swear in again under the new president. Right now I can't blame them a bit.

Great comments, especially from WeMadeAMistake. I am writing a letter to the editor of our local liberal rag called the Lancaster Intelligencer (oxymoron) and will use some of your ideas. The simple facts presented here are that Nobama is a childish, churlish, infantile, incompetent clown way over his head and elected by a bunch of teens and twenty somethings who couldn't find the capitol of the USA on a map if they had a gun to their heads. Thank god the people are rising up in the form of town halls and tea parties, and are giving their time effort as never before to pave the way to get rid of these liberal scum in 2010, and then Nobama in 2012. The Narcissist In Chief is so stupid that he won't believe all of it until the day it happens. And I think the troops will band together and make sure Nobama is fired. You can bet that Nobama and his Chicago gangster cronies will do everything they can do to squelch the military vote, but it won't work this time.
Keep the faith.

Sad but you are all preaching to the choir. The ones who should be reading this - can't. They are walking around in circles like "surrogates". It's also telling that our intellectually challenged immigrants (you know the ones)escape their country of suppression, lack of freedom and liberty, to come to America - the land of the FREE, only to arrive and elect and support those who are intent on turning this country into what they escaped from. Why are they voting? and voting for third-world dolts to change the country (USA) of their dreams into their own old "beloved" country?

If you came to America to escape yours country, then don't change ours to be like yours...STAY HOME. Stop helping Marxist Socialists get elected here.

Don't count on the military votes turning the tide in an election any more.

I cast my vote in the tumultuous Florida election for President Bush that (supposedly) Gore won by 600 votes.

I researched it...and found out that about my vote and approximately 15-17 THOUSAND other absentee military ballots in the state were 'discarded' without being counted.

How many of those do you think were for the Republican candidate?

Google it. The information is out there. There was no hue and cry from the press about us losing our right to vote...even as we wore uniforms and took an oath in the effort to preserve that right.

I have no faith in government any longer.

Given that the entire newspaper industry is teetering on the brink of nevermore and given that there's been a hint of possible bailout money for many of them, is it any wonder why that they are dutiful, careful and deliberate to a fault to champion this administration and everything it touches or alleges, boldfaced lies included, all the while marginalizing or demonizing the legitimate concerns of more than half of America? I thank God Almighty that I had the personal integrity, strength of character and common sense to have never pursued a career in modern day "journalism" or American politics. It would appear, at least to any sane, thinking individual, that those are the jobs best left to the liars, the idolatrous, the thieves, the ne'er-do-wells, the philanderers, the sociopaths and the narcissists walking among us.

This is along the same line as the videos of Bush making bonehead statements or mispronouncing nuclear. (Nucular? I mean the guy went to Yale. WTF) Interesting how Obama says we have 52 states and I've never seen that video. Where's the replay of Obama thanking himself because his teleprompter was set up wrong? Where are the videos of him promising not to cater to special interests and then completely flopping on that statement? I mean this is a guy who was promising to end poverty in his stump speech and I haven't seen that video since the election. It is a clear double standard but if you're smart you can see through it.

Bring our troops home! From Iraq, from Afghanistan and the 130 other nations around the world where we are stationed.

I'm a former Republican who regretfully voted for Bush thinking he was a conservative. If I must be label Republican at all then I'm a Ron Paul Republican. He was the only candidate that made a lick of sense during the last election and the ONLY candidate that talked about bringing our troops home.

Obama was never anti-war. He repeatedly said he wanted to end Iraq so he could send our boys off to fight other pointless wars. The left merely plugged their ears and told each other he was anti-war.

I'm disappointed at the left. I haven't heard of or been able to get info on any anti-war marches since Obama got in power. Obama = Bush's third term.

I served six years, and would not want the press taking pics of my coffin (and profiting from my death) had I returned in one. What bothers me most is the way our populace has been duped into believing the tripe that gets broadcast and published by the one-world media. Our alleged president is a see-through phony blow-hard who lies and manipulates. I had to produce my long-form birth certificate to get married, why can't he produce his long-form birth certificate to get elected? The liar-in-chief has bamboozled the populace to feed his ego, with a willing media helping him cover every lie and deception along the way. Contrary to what the MSM is telling us, white America does not hate Obama because he's black. It's just that we have no respect anyone that's so deceptive and narcissistic, especially when that person is representing the USA to the rest of the world.

Yet another reason that what is now laughingly referred to as the "MainStreamMedia" continues to lose market share, which is now, for the three broadcast networks, less than 50% of what it was when they were the only ones holding the microphone. Americans are fed up with their duplicity and left-wing agenda, which may account for how Bill O'Reilly's show outdrew Colonoscopy Katie's "news show" in August. The demise of the "alphabets" is imminent, and I'd wager that there are millions out there who view that prospect with unbridled glee.

Since Obama has been in office it's not shocking enough to see the caskets of our dead soldiers any more. When I lost my son Sept. 19, 2006, (He was a Sgt. in the active duty Army) there were people protesting outside his memorial service, I received letters of hate from the left accusing my son of being a baby killer, they called me a father of one, The left made a very sad period for my wife, myself, daughter, and my son's 8 month pregnant wife, an almost unbearable time for us. Pres. Bush went to Walter Reed numerous times during our six months there. He was a very caring person who met with the families, as well as the soldiers. My son was a proud soldier who had nothing but respect for his Commander-in-Chief. I wonder if he would have felt the same of Obama???

It's never been about putting 50 media people on site, you idiot(s). If Bush 1 hadn't put the ban in place there never would have been a big group clamoring to get the first photos/stories. It would have always been just one or a handful of photographers. The AP is doing the right thing by going down to Dover for every arrival. Every fallen vet (and their families) deserves that bit of respect. It's not necessarily a national story when a soldier dies but it sure is a local one. The AP's coverage allows the soldier's local media to give the story its proper due. Bush 2 and Cheney should have never fought this issue.

Sep 29, 2009

I hate it when politics use the lives and deaths of our soldiers to benefit their political careers.

I still remember the pictures of Lyndon Baines Johnson picking the air targets from the White House's "war" room during the Vietnam and thinking that he, without any military experience, had no real authority to endanger the lives of our soldiers.

Now, after clamoring over the "right" to desecrate the bodies of our soldiers with their self-importance, they ignore these same bodies. It is terrible to play "games" with the lives and deaths of our soldiers--or anyone, for that matter.

The mainstream media, with the exception of AP in this case, has shown themselves much less than they claim to be. Less objective and less desiable.

It seems that most people here are engaged in some form of delusional "groupthink" (i.e., reinforcing each other's incorrect & extreme ideas).
Allow me to shed some light. G.W. Bush's presidency was an absolute failure, according to the overwhelming majority of political scientists, economists, & informed observers worldwide. Bush & his team CAUSED the problems being experienced by our soldiers by invading Iraq (on false pretenses / trumped up charges of WMD), & the Bush Admin. - in a variety of ways - inflicted incalculable damage on this country. As sharp (& as strong of a leader) as he is, Obama could not possibly undo ALL of the massive damage done by Bush. But let me be clear - in every way imaginable, Obama is a far superior President, leader, & representative of our country (compared to Bush). You should open your minds, instead of having your narrow, often hate-filled opinions reinforced by other right wing extremists.

When Bush was president we had thousands of Troops being killed...and Bush didnt allow the Press to Photograph the Coffins..

With Obama as President the Press now has the right and HAS shown the Coffins (Unlike the Bush Administration).. but of course with literally just dozens being killed now instead of thousands the American Public is satisfied the numbers are low enough that they don't need to be reminded everyday.

The Bottom line is the Media CAN show the Coffins at any time under Obama .. under Bush it was against the Law..you could actually go to Jail for Photographing the coffins of our fallen .

That's the bottom line..what once was against the Law is no longer against the Law

What a chilling observation. That the politics of the left and the media is such that their principles are so corrupt they can rationalize preying on those who are so willing to give their lives that they should have such political freedom. That the press is similarly inclined is even more alarming. The designated guardian's of our freedom of the press have corrupted the 1st amendment for those of their own political persuasion and give them a pass regardless of how they conduct themselves. As Pravda of the Old Soviet Union said and still practice. "A lie that advances Communism is a truth."

The ban on taking pictures of the rturning caskets was lifted while Bush was prez, albeit the press had to go to court to get it lifted, but it was. Remember just a couple of wks ago when the AP printed the photo of the Army soldier literally moments away from death, and many Americans expressed concern over the printing of this photo. The AP said it was news and they felt they were compelled to release it, although they as well as the rest of the MSM withheld pictures of terror attacks because they felt it wasn't Germain to the story of a terror attack. Huh??? As for a small group of you who think Obama walks on water, well I am sorry for you, the damage he has done to America in such a short time span is incalculable... Because of this man and his Congress, we very well might not be able to save our country...

Near Frankfort, Ky on US Highway 60 is an old farm house with a hay field in front. During the Bush years the owner kept a running total of Iraq KIA's. Afghanistan KIA's were not included. A few months ago I noticed the numbers were not being updated. 4,213 was the number for months. Recently they were taken down completely. One can only conclude the morbid tally was only a political statement, not an act to honor fallen soldiers and marines. Shameful.

This will never, never never change, unless or until we run them out of business. Bankrupt the liberal media in all its forms. Then and only then might we get a little honesty. Bush is gone, and that obviously accounts for much of the loss of interest in photographs of coffins, but I think the phenomenon is primarily attributable to something more fundamental. After all the hand wringing about permitting the photos, the photos were suddenly permitted; they were no longer forbidden fruit and, as such, inherently less interesting. The other dynamic is the essence of the issue: How many photos of flag draped coffins does anyone need to see in order to get the point? Tell me that 10 or 100 or 1000 of my fellow Americans have perished in combat and I understand that loss, and I grieve for it. I don't need photos of coffins to make the point.

He has his own personal agenda and it doesn't include body bags and grief stricken wives, husbands, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers and other family members. A) The point was that the government was attempting to manipulate war coverage. The specific restriction was a secondary issue. Journalists usually object to secret government activity.

B) Naturally most of your readers seem perfectly happy to have the government manipulate them so long as it's under the control of a "conservative." It's OK to trust the government then, just not now. Sensible people might prefer to be skeptics of the government even when their side is in office.

C) There's nothing stopping the Washington Times, or Fox News or the other GOP-friendly media from covering the arrivals just as aggressively as the "liberal" media tried to cover them during the Bush ban. Let them. Oh, wait, that might remind people about Bush's mistakes.

As for Afghanistan, it is in same shape when Karzai was first installed for president. Nothing improved. If you pull out, would you prefer rule by drug lords or by Taliban? That are viable choices...

Ah yes, caskets... With "eventful" economical situation, squabble about health care and all photo-ops of still-quite-new President, who cares about some caskets. Old news!

I wonder if the Obama bashers ever checked on the Admin contacting the soldiers family. My experience is a personal friend and his family got a nice letter from the President. I don't know if he wrote it himself or if staff did but nevertheless, there was. I would point out our wonderful Republican Senator did not but they did get a letter from the Democratic one.
As far as the Gold Star Mothers, I don't know, but since they were too stuffy to let in a Mother who happened to be an illegal immigrant, who cares. To them status was more important than the soldier.

It looks like I came accross a far right story, by the sounds of the comments. You can tell how right by the persanal and racist comments made about the president and his wife. Remember far right folks we can tell who you are by the ignorance of your comments!! Thank God you are outnumbered by sane people who voted against your crazy ticket. Well, I suppose Palin would have quit by now anyway. And Bush acted like he cared so much because he was ultimately responsible for ALL of the deaths!

I find it entertaining as a soldier in the United States Army how people sit in here and argue about a soldiers COFFIN picture, Are U F ing kidding me ask about the life we had or the children or try asking about are time in Iraq or Afghan. And do not make us seem like we were drug to do this we signed up to protect America we signed up because we are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA SOLDIERS,MARINES,AIRMEN,AND SAILORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kabookey says:

"Of course this was only because they were trying to bash W but since he is no longer president they have no one to undermine"

kabooky doesn't know how to think critically, nor does he understand the issue.

The fact of W hiding this deserved bashing. That was the issue. Obama lifted the ban.

It is no one's fault that the interest has fallen off, it's America's fault. In fact, there is hardly any press coverage of the war at all. Why? It doesn't pull in readers. And the way today's newspaper's work, no readers means you have to charge less for advertising. This isn't political, it's economic. It's a sad statement of American culture but it's not Obama's fault. W did the wrong thing in hiding it. Obama did the right thing in allowing exposure.

It's not Obama's fault that no one's taking advantage of it.

Kanye West, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus...those are the embarassingly stupid things that sell papers.

What in the world are you people talking about??? The Bush administration banned the media from taking pictures of the caskets; the Obama administration lifted the ban. Where's the liberal inconsistency? We said we wanted the ban lifted; Obama lifted it. Where does "even-handed criticism" come into play? Learn some basic logic you dittoheads.

I think it's HILARIOUS that this never occurred to ANY of you until the conservatard media manipulated you into paying attention. Without this headline, not a single one of you would be wondering what happened to the casket coverage. YOU forgot all about it.

Look at the carefully worded headline, making it seem as if it's still about bashing Bush. There are PLENTY of conservative news outlets out there. Do I have to point out that they aren't covering it either? Where is Fox news? Under Obama control? Has Rush Limpy spoken out about the caskets? Not really.

Except he will, now that they've figured out this great spin on the story.

Fact is, America is bored with the whole thing, so shame on us.

You're all thoughtless morons.

"The News Hour", on your PBS stations, has a silent tribute to the fallen of that day at the end of each broadcast with a picture of each soldier, if they have one, along with name, age (vast majority of them are way to young I think), rank and home town.

A lot of you people here are just amazing. Where were you when President Bush reduced the number of troops in Afghanistan to move them to Iraq? Where were you when he just ignored all the problems in Afghanistan because he had to win the war in Iraq- which btw had nothing to do with 9/11 or presented no threat to US?

Is anyone really that surprised at what is going on? Most of the news outlets are pro-Obama. This president can not do anything wrong in their eyes. He should be sending notes or speaking to every fallen heroes family instead of traveling around on our money to make sure that the olympics are in Chicago. I wonder if it was any other town in any other state if he would have felt the need to make a personal appearance. I am fedup with this administration!!! These are elected officials who are suppose to work for US but they seem to think that we are stupid and don't think that we know what is best for us. The next elections can't get here soon enough.

Any person who can read and write, has the ability and brain power to think for himself/herself, and the slightest consideration for his fellow human being will NEVER be a republican, conservative or evangelical. The reason is simple, if Jesus of Nazareth Himself were on the ground, He would find it difficult to get a name for these people. Compared to the Pharises of old whom He called hypocrites, these people are something else - beyond the pale!!!

I agree that at least AP is honoring the fallen, and hey are not pushing the issue on anyone, simply recording and reporting the info for anyone willing to read or print it. I agree with manystatements made here.

What I disagree with is when someone resorts to name calling. I see several examples of the posts here that are just as bad, or worse than the dogmagitic tripe some of the people from the far left produce. But I thought we were better than that. I applaude all who stick to the issues and keep it civil. To the others, please re-examine your thoughts and i you have nothing constructive to say, please keep your opinions to yourself. Thank you.

Now lets all try to get along and work together for what is in all of our best interests!

Without getting into a liberal/conservative never ending spat, I will say that preventing the photographing of the caskets and providing "lower than accurate" casualty numbers was wrong. Reversing that policy was right. Letting the caskets/casualties fade into obscurity is wrong, but not unexpected. It's really that simple, imo. What's happening in the media is what happens with EVERY topic that is covered. It's covered until the masses lose interest (which is usually quickly) and it's on to the next story. The original STORY was about the policy of not allowing caskets to be photographed. Once that policy was gone then there was nothing to cover.

"The Associated Press, which supplies photos to 1,500 U.S. newspapers and 4,000 Web sites....." so basically 5,500 different outlets still have ACCESS to the photographs (which was the original issue), I don't see why they all need to have an actual photographer there when they can just ge the photos from the AP.

All I can say is thank goodness I bought my guns n ammo before this clown got in office, because all Americans have been arming themselves since Osama Obama was elected. Gun and ammunition sales have gone through the roof and finding a box of ammo for it is like gold. NOW the real point I did not vote for this idiot, he is a coward, a recist (Why would a president get involved in an arrest of a black person breaking into his own house, because the white officer was doing his duty?), Knows nothing about the military, and is off shopping with his fat pig wife trying to get the Olympics in Chicago.

I live in Illinois, I'm not on welfare, but the state does help provide me with a caregiver because I'm in a wheelchair with a spinal cord injury. This is due to fighting in Vietnam for all the rights provided by our forefathers who were brave and intelligent men, but they made mistakes too. I fought beside blacks, hispanics, and all races but we didn't care because we were brothers in arms, you could always count on your buddies. We as Illinoisans don't want the olympics the state barely passed the budget which provides for my worker, but they cut child protective services and yet the politicians fly to Chicago at sate expense. Imagine that.. Oh and by the way the capitol of Illinois is in Springfield

I feel sorry for the families of my fallen and wounded buddies because they are in the middle of all this. I know what it's like to be called babykiller and all the other obscenities thrown at you when you get home alive, wounded, or fallen.
I and my family not want my picture published because I came home wounded or fallen period. It was used just to get some communist islamic inconsiderate a**hole elected. Yes I own firearms for target practice but I would never use them against a human except to protect myself or my family, I did enough of that many years ago and still have to live with it to this day. Sorry to put this in a place where heroes should be praised instead of rhetoric but that is my opinion. I had to break this up to get it all in sorry.

This article is misleading: it says the AP is only "one" media source, which is true -- as far as it goes -- but fails to distinguish that the AP is a WIRE service, which FEEDS all the other outlets, a.k.a. delegation By the article's own statement: "1,500 U.S. newspapers and 4,000 Web sites" are now able to show flag draped coffins (that's 5,449 more than "one") -- and that doesn't include TV outlets. I, for one, am glad that the returning dead troops in their coffins are finally being shown, so that we can pay our final respects properly. I never understood why President Bush was too ashamed of his dead troops to let us pay our final respects properly.

If you ever wondered why the US has such a poor rep with so many people around the world, look no further than the hateful ignorance being spat out on this page. Here is the sad truth to which none of you will admit: ultra conservatism is always bad ... whether it is Communist, Muslim, Jewish/Israeli, or Christian. It is hard to see truth anywhere when your eyes are closed to all but that which can be interpreted only by your existing moral code.

Bush and other Republicans don't hate America, and neither does Obama or any Democrat who holds elected public office. How anyone can believe that a person could run for public office with the intent of destroying their country ... amazing. It is sad how Jesus' teachings on forgiveness, tolerance and brotherhood are completely forgotten whenever it is convenient for the religious right. Too bad, because there is so much potential for the US to do well by its citizens, but mindless partisan views are getting in the way.

The media did not want to show the true cost of war, they wanted pictures of coffins so they could attack Bush. You expect them to do this to a Democrat President?

There is no mainstream media anymore, we simply have the extended Whitehouse PR department!
