Book contends Fey, Couric brought down Sarah Palin

When Tina Fey uttered those infamous words "I can see Russia from my house" on "Saturday Night Live," the caricature of Sarah Palin was forever burned in viewers' brains.

That imitation and one "lousy interview" with Katie Couric helped riddle the vice presidential candidate's chances of being taken seriously by some constituencies, argues the Weekly Standard's Matthew Continetti, whose new book, "The Persecution of Sarah Palin: How the Media Tried to Bring Down a Rising Star," comes out next week.

"I think they were damaging," he told Yeas & Nays. "People who watched 'Saturday Night Live,' they are not people who spend that much time thinking about politics otherwise."

Continetti's book, which comes out alongside Palin's tome and several other Palin-inspired books, directly examines Palin's treatment in the media and addresses some of the misconceptions that still plague the former governor of Alaska.

"I don't think anyone watching her election last year was ready for the assault that was launched against her," he said, adding that the McCain campaign seriously bungled Palin's media strategy by giving out long, exclusive interviews with journalists like Couric and corralling the governor away from everybody else. "Palin said she was angry at Couric, she didn't like her personally," Continetti said, excusing away an interview in which Palin tripped over Supreme Court cases and was unable to name news sources that she liked to read. She was much more effective when she was allowed to talk with multiple news outlets, he offered.

While Continetti condemned how Palin has played out in the media, he still believes she will run for president in 2012. To do it, though, she may need to shed the image of being "far right," as she was branded, in part because of the attack dog role she played as John McCain's vice presidential candidate, Continetti said.

Instead of attacking Democrats such as President Obama, she may have to play nice as she did back in Alaska and show she can work alongside them.

"One task for her is to go back to that earlier playbook," Continetti said.

Sarah Palin was done in by Sarah Palin; failure to address the most basic of questions and blaming Couric for her poor prep. When she said she did better with multiple outlets, that was code for Fox and other friendlies, rather than having to offer substance and knowledge. She reduces discourse to soundbites and slogans and lacks the ability to reflect on history and errors and express any intellectual curiosity. This is why she and McCain lost, Obama won, end of story.

"People who watched 'Saturday Night Live,' they are not people who spend that much time thinking about politics otherwise"??? Um... I watch SNL and I spent plenty of time thinking about politics as well. People are certainly more than capable of watching television and following politics. Sarah Palin didn't fail because of SNL. She failed because she sucks. End of story.

Boy, too nitwits makes a consensus? If Sara Palin was President, this country would have an economic chance. Before you argue back go and study economics, particularly supply and demand. Compare the basics of that theory with any Obama policy and you'll soon learn we are screwed as long as democrats run the country.

Yeah, look at the imbecile we're stuck with as VP. And they still have the nerve to mock and ridicule Sarah Palin.

Whenever I see Couric or Fey on tv, I change the channel. They are mean girls and I won't waste my time watching them.

Jeeesh! You've just described Obama and Biden. So I guess Obama just reflected on History when he decided not to attend the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. The ideological contrast is just too stark. Afterall, he's spent too much time denigrating Reagan's legacy. Compared to Reagan Obama's a Marxist punk.

Fey mocking Palin on SNL should have been balanced by staff mocking of Obama or Biden. Since it wasn't the skits were unbalanced and cruel. Fey has made a living off Palin like a parasite. As to Couric, I don't watch her and I never will. She pressed Palin and she kissed up to Biden and Obama.

Palin should have been more knowledgeable before she did the Couric interview and the Gibson interview. I was quite surprised by the poor way she handled them. Nevertheless she did not deserve to be roasted constantly while the Obama- sucking media-- made stars of Obama and Biden. Biden is a bumbling idiot. Obama is far worse and more dangerous and devious. He twists everything so it will have double meanings. Tina Fey owes her career to Palin but she shouldnt be proud of trying to destroy the woman either. All of these Obama lovers will pay for shoving him down our throats. America has awakened and they can now see this fraud for what he really is.,..

I do not watch SNL.
Couric is a fool with bad breath.

DUH!

Nov 7, 2009

DUH, it brought her down. That was the point. Quite effective and entertaining. I imagine most of the people watching Saturday Night Live think they are more qualified to be president than Sarah Palin. And they're right! She need not go near our nation's nuclear codes. She THRIVES on conflict. It would be time to bend over and kiss your @#! goodbye if she got elected. Is she smarter than a 5th grader? I think not.

DUH!

Obama would have to give the press a reason to MOCK him first. DUH! The nation is ready for black president. Period. He's earned respect. Sarah couldn't pinpoint a library on a map if her life depended on it.

Sarah is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fringe. Katie Couric would make a better president.

I do not, will not watch Couric, but I would bet money that she has never asked anyone before or since she interviewed Sarah Palin what kind of magazines they read, man or woman. It was a stupid question asked by a left wing snob who truly believes the only intelligent people that are worthy, live on the east or west coast. The scary thing is, she actually got some kind of award for that interview...incredible

Can't forget that Fey(ol' Scarface) Oprah the Baby Rhino,Couric the post menopausal ex- cheerleader,Campbell (Saudi Prince's"escort")Brown helped lie to moderate voters about MuBarack H. O.but there IS a silver lining to this cloud. The previously mentioned just may have done us a favor.I am to the right politically/fiscally, and for me, Palin is not the REAL Deal.
