The daughter of Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert said her father ignored medical experts prior to his coronavirus diagnosis.
Gohmert’s daughter Caroline, a recording artist who is also known as BELLSAINT, said on Friday that her father had followed President Trump’s lead when it came to the pandemic, which she argued is “leading his followers to an early grave.”
“Wearing a mask is a non-partisan issue,” she tweeted. “The advice of medical experts shouldn’t be politicized. My father ignored medical expertise and now he has COVID. This has been a heartbreaking battle [because] I love my dad and don’t want him to die. Please please listen to medical [experts]. It’s not worth following a president who has no remorse for leading his followers to an early grave.”
The Republican lawmaker tested positive for the coronavirus last week, right before he was scheduled to fly aboard Air Force One with Trump to the Lone Star State.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing a face covering to slow the spread of the virus, but Gohmert frequently resisted doing so and even suggested that he got infected when he did wear a face mask.
Gohmert also said he plans on taking hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug that has been praised by Trump and has shown encouraging signs of being an effective treatment for COVID-19 patients. But health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, have been highly critical of hydroxychloroquine’s use during the pandemic because of a dearth of evidence that it has the ability to combat or ward off the coronavirus.
In a 2019 article from Roll Call, BELLSAINT’s agent, Ryan Vaughn, told the outlet that his client and her father disagree politically, but she still loves him.
