Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told students at Howard University on Wednesday that he believed nonviolent drug users should not be imprisoned.

But Paul added that even “benign” drugs such as marijuana were bad for people.

“I think that if you use it too much you will lose IQ points, I think if you use it too much you won’t show up for class,” Paul explained. “I think you’ll eat too many Doritos.”

As the audience laughed, Paul added that young people do dangerous and harmful things to themselves all the time but shouldn’t go to jail for it.

“I just don’t want to see them in jail, and I will everything I can to keep nonviolent criminals out of jail,” Paul concluded.
