Sen. Rand Paul is recovering after an assault by his neighbor left him with five broken ribs on Friday.

The Associated Press reported Doug Stafford, a top staffer to Paul, said it’s not clear when he’ll return to work because he’s having trouble getting around due to considerable pain.

Stafford said the broken ribs include three displaced fractures, which can lead to life-threatening problems.

Rene Boucher, 59, was arrested for the assault on Paul, which took place as he was doing yard work Friday. He lives next door to the Kentucky senator.

Boucher spent a night in jail and faces misdemeanor charges.
