Alleged National Security Agency leaker Reality Winner's family is sticking by her.

Winner's stepfather, Gary Davis, said, "You may not agree with her politics, but she is a patriot," in an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Winner served six years as a linguist in the Air Force.

"She served her country," Winner's mother, Billie Winner-Davis, told NBC News. "She is a good person."

Winner, a federal contractor, is accused of sending classified documents to The Intercept. She was arrested Saturday and charged Monday.

Winner, of Augusta, Ga., is accused of printing off classified material, removing it from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet. The documents concerned Russia's involvement in the 2016 election.

The government was not aware Winner leaked the document until a news outlet contacted government officials for comment on an upcoming report based on a document they believed to be classified. After receiving and reviewing a copy of the document, the government began an investigation.

The Department of Justice did not confirm that Winner leaked the document to the Intercept, but the report received by the news outlet was dated May 5. The affidavit confirms the intelligence document was also dated May 5.

The Intercept report and news of the Winner's arrest come as President Trump has called for a crackdown on leaks that have plagued the administration since taking office.
