Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday night it was a miracle the shooter who opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a baseball field Wednesday morning did not strike more innocent people.

"It had to have been an act of God to throw his marksmanship off because the members were sitting ducks out there," Johnson said. "Many of them were stationary when the shooting started. But he saw many of those members jump into that first base dugout, and that is why he started working his way around behind the fence," said Johnson, who was one of the GOP lawmakers at the Alexandria, Va., field practicing Thursday's congressional baseball game.

Four people were injured by gunshots, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who is still in critical condition, two U.S. Capitol police officers and one other person. The shooting suspect, James Hodgkinson, was killed by police.

Hodgkinson had asked a lawmaker in the moments before he opened up fire from behind the third base dugout if the men playing were Republicans or Democrats, according to an account from Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla.
